The strengths of the research included a detailed analysis of existing products. However, the research focused on different types of magazines and could have been improved. The planning included a detailed style sheet and proposal, but initial design ideas were weak. Time management was good, but the product could have benefited from additional time. Comparisons to similar magazines showed similarities like large pictures and titles, but the magazines differed in layout and amount of information. The visual design looked professional like a real magazine, though some photos were not original. Overall, the target audience of filmmakers was appealed to through niche topics and a mixture of detailed articles and information.
2. Research
• What were the strengths of your research? How did your research
help your product?
• The analysis of the existing products was done quite detailed and I think this was
one of the strengths.
• This helped me to understand how to appeal to different audiences through the
style and type of content
• What were the weaknesses of your research? What could you have
done better/improve? What effect would this have had on your
product?
• I think the research analysis was quite weak but, this didn’t have a major effect on
the final outcome of the magazine. Another weakness was that I looked into a
variety of magazines none of which were like the one I was going to produce
• The research analysis could have been done better and I could have Done more
research into existing filmmaking magazines
• It just meant that I had to spend a bit more time planning than I would have liked
to
3. Planning
• What were the strengths of your planning? How did your
planning help your product?
• I think the style sheet was very detailed and conveyed all the necessary
information. I also think the proposal was good in telling people what the
magazine was about and all the information needed
• It gave me things to look at when designing the final piece
• What were the weaknesses of your planning? What could you
have done better/improve? What effect would this have had
on your product?
• A weakness in the planning was the initial design ideas. They were just not
very good and should have been to make it easier to make in production
• I think I could have improved my initial layout plans to make it more detailed. I
could have added labels with information about colours and fonts etc. I also
could have labelled what the photos should look like
4. Time Management
• Did you manage your time well?
• I think that the time was managed very well and I stuck to the timeline on the
pro forma. The production was finished on the final day of scheduled time so I
didn’t have time to make any more major adjustments if I wasn’t happy with
the final product.
• Did you complete your project on time or would your products
have improved with additional time?
• I think that the magazine could possibly be better with a bit of time making the
pictures blend with the black background of the DPS as they stand out a bit too
much.
• What would you have done if you had more time to produce
your work?
• With more time I would have replaced the photo on the DPS with one of my
own and maybe done another DPS or a back page advert. This would have
made the overall magazine seem more completed and professional
5. Technical Qualities
• Compare your work to similar existing products and discuss the similarities
and differences
Similarities
Large cover line
Information
about what's
inside
Picture of a
camera
Big memorable
title
Differences. The pro movie maker magazine is much more chaotic with lots of colour
and large stand out pictures. The Final Shot has a cleaner look to it with one large
picture and less bold but still forward font choice. The ProMM has stand out boxes
giving it a boxy look, where as TFS is box less and flows smoother.
6. Pro Movie Maker
Technical Qualities
• Compare your work to similar existing products and discuss the similarities
and differences
Similarities
Large Pictures
Large titles
Information
Colour theme has
been carried through
Differences
The PMM magazine has one much larger deconstructed RED
camera where as TFS has 2 separate filmmaking DSLRs. This
makes the PMM stand out more but only for this page. I don’t
think it would work well for TFS as it’s a very broad topic and
cant be defined like the RED cameras. TFS has a lot more
detailed information about the topic than PMM which makes
sense as TFS’ is more of a beginner magazine for filmmakers
and PMM is for more the advanced level assuming that the
reader has passible knowledge of the topic
The Final Shot
7. Technical Qualities
• Compare your work to similar existing products and discuss the similarities
and differences
Similarities
Pictures about
what is included
Stand out headers
Differences: The TFS has
an advert at the bottom
of the contents page
where as PMM has filled
that space with pictures
of what the magazine is
about. Another
difference is that PMM
has included small
details about what each
article is on
Layout
The Final Shot Pro Movie Maker
8. Aesthetic Qualities
• Does your work look good?
• I believe it looks very professional and like a real magazine.
• Was it creative?
• I think it was creative by the way the picture sits above the title and how the pictures in the
DPS blend with the background
• What aspects of your magazines visuals do you like?
• I like the front covers big picture and how it show what the main topic of that edition is. I also
like how the contents page looks with the mixture of advert and relevant information
• What would you improve? How would you improve it?
• I would add more text to the DPS as it seems to be lacking but it. I would take maybe more
about in depth and make the picture a bit smaller. I could also make the front title a bit thicker
to make it easier to read. I can also make the column text to line up like a newspaper actricle
• Strengths and Weaknesses
– One strength it has is it looks like a professionally made magazine with the standard
characteristics of one. Also, all the colours flow through the pages and are quite subtle not
mad stand out colours. A weakness of this is that 2 of the photos aren’t mine so I would
change that in the future
9. Aesthetic Qualities
I like the big picture
on the front cover
I like the combination
of the advert and
contents page
I think there could be more
text added here but it
doesn’t really effect the
overall look right now
I like how the pictures rides above the title
which gives the impression of an
established magazine
The advert looks real as it includes
the canon logo and a stereotypical
image someone holding a camera
Not my photos so I would
add my own in there
Final Pieces
10. Audience Appeal
• How have you appealed to your target audience? I think the overall
premise will appeal to the target audience as it is quite a niche topic.
Specifically, I think the detailed articles and mixture of information will
appeal nicely to the target audience.
