Research
• For my research I looked at three different magazines, and looked at the
features of the front covers and double pages. I also looked at genres,
target audience, text to picture ratio, font choices, colour scheme and
what the magazine symbolises. I looked at some of the phrases and talked
about what they could mean/who might say them.
• A strength of my research is it really helped me with how to layout my
magazine and what features to put in. Also, it helped with my target
audience and how to make my magazine reach out to them.
• A weakness is I would have liked more time to look into the car industry in
more detail. This is so I could put more useful information in my magazine.
• Most of my research was on the internet looking at magazines. These
magazines didn’t have very good layouts becasue everything was listed. I
looked at some printed magazines, but it would have helped if I looked in
more printed magazines because they have better layouts, which would
have given me a better idea of how to make my layouts look better.
Planning
• I made three mind maps of magazine ideas. These were between Cars,
Comedy and TV shows. The best one to make was the car magazine
because I had more ideas for that than the others.
• I made a list of everything I needed to do and what day to do them on.
This was so I didn’t get stressed and I could manage my time better.
• Although the plan helped, I didn’t follow all if it because I got stuck on
certain tasks. While I was thinking of what to do for the task I was stuck
on, I started working on something else which helped me get further
ahead.
• Some of the features on my mood board are on websites that are blocked
in college, however I was able to access them from home. Next time, I will
look for alternative websites if one I want to use is blocked in college. This
would help me work a bit quicker because then I wouldn’t be looking for
alternative websites for a long time.
Time Management
• I managed to finish my magazine in the time given, although I missed a
lesson due to circumstances.
• I managed to follow the schedule for the first two weeks with researching
and planning it, but in production I didn’t follow it. I had to finish writing
my articles which took all of the first day. I started my production the next
day and decided to make my double page first because I thought it would
take up most of the time.
• On the third day, I started making my front cover because I got stuck on
my double page spread. This helped me get further ahead so I could finish
everything quicker..
• If I had more time, I would re-design the double page flat plan because the
original layout didn’t look suitable enough. This would have helped
because I wouldn’t have got stuck on how to make the new layout
Technical Qualities front cover differences
• The colours on my magazine are darker than the other one. The other one has used brighter colours to make the page stand out.
• Mine has a lot of text which takes up a bit of space. The other magazine doesn’t have a lot of text which makes the image clearer to see.
• The image on my magazine isn’t as clear as the other one because I didn't use a professional camera. The other image is a lot clearer and shinier because a
professional camera has been used.
• The text on the other magazine isn’t the same size, but it makes the page look professional, and it doesn’t take up all the space. The text on my magazine is
the same size throughout which takes up a bit of space.
• The other magazine has more than one car in the background which will draw the audiences attention in more than what mine does. Mine only has one
car which makes it look like it focuses on one model.
• The other magazine looks more modern than mine because it has newer cars on the front. Mine looks a bit older because it has an older car on the front.
• The other magazine looks like it’s aimed at an older audience because the cars are very expensive. My magazine is aimed at a young audience because it
has an image of a cheap car on the front, which they will be able to afford.
• The backgrounds are different. My photo has been taken in a car park and the background image hasn’t been edited. On the other magazine, a
photographer will have taken a photo of the background and edited it to make the image look cleaner and professional.
Technical Qualities front cover similarites
• They’re both car magazines which talk about the same subjects. The purpose of them is to advertise reliable/suitable cars and advise people about what to
do when they buy a car.
• In some places, they use similar text colours (e.g. partly on the masthead). This makes them contrast against there backgrounds and makes them easy to
read.
• The cover lines are in the same places. This is so they don’t cover the image so much.
• They both have been Photo shopped to remove unnecessary marks. This makes the images look better/suitable for a magazine.
• They both have a visible number plate. They will have been edited in Photoshop to protect the cars identity.
Technical Qualities double page differences
• Mine has a colourful layout which grabs the audiences attention. The other magazine has a plain background with black text which could
lose the readers interest because it’s more text than images.
• The other magazine doesn’t have any subheadings which makes it not as organised as mine. Mine has subheadings on each article which
tells the reader what they’ll be reading about.
• Mine has a big title at the top which is clear to see. Although the other magazine has a title at the top, it’s not easy to see because it’s small.
• The other magazine has a lot of shapes which are eye catching. This makes the text look organised, but it still could do with subheadings. My
magazine doesn’t use any shapes which makes the page not as good to look at because…
• The other magazine has more colour with using shapes and on some of the text, which makes it look less boring and draws the audience’s
attention in.
Technical Qualities double page similarities
• The text looks the same size which gives the pages better consistency. Also, it makes it easier to fit images/graphics on the page.
• They both use bold text, but in different places. On mine, I’ve used bold for the subheadings and titles, which tells the reader what they’re reading
about. On the other page, they’ve used bold text on images and titles to make the page look more interesting.
• The text colour is mostly the same, apart from one word on the other magazine. This also helps to give the pages better consistency. If there were lots of
different colours used, the page would look too busy, which would lose the readers interest.
• They both use images which makes the pages look interesting. These will draw the audiences attention in because they are something they will want to
see.
Aesthetic Qualities front cover
Does your work look good?
I think the work looks good, but it could be improved. The image stands out and the text blends in
with the background.
I’m pleased with the way the masthead turned out because it fills the top of the page, it’s big and
colourful and it contrasts well with the background colour. I like the font colour for the cover lines
because they’re bright and they also contrast well with the image and the background colour.
Was it creative?
The fonts for the masthead and bottom cover line are from the website dafont. I chose the
masthead font because it gives the idea of speed and heat which relates to cars. I chose the font for
the bottom cover line because I like the breaking/shattering style and I think it links in which the
subject of insurance because it can cost a lot of money and it can ‘break the bank’. Also it can link in
with the idea of something broken being fixed through insurance. I made this font bigger because
it’s the main article in the magazine. This acknowledges text hierarchy where important articles are
more noticeable. The other cover lines are smaller because they’re further down in the text
hierarchy.
The colours i’ve chosen for all the fonts are associated with heat and flames which links back to the
speed theme used in the masthead.
What aspects of your magazines visuals do you like?
I like the slightly dark background because it makes everything clearer and shiny. The articles I chose
to write about would draw the audiences attention in and make car enthusiasts read it.
Even though it’s hard to tell, I like the editing I did on the number plate which changed the lettering
and numbering to change the identity of the original number plate image I used. This makes the
number plate look authentic.
I like the flame font style on the masthead because the heat theme links in with the subject of the
magazine.
What would you improve? How would you improve it?
I would improve the editing I did on the trim of the bonnet which I think I made too bright/white
using the spot removal tool. This could be darker so it matches the colour of the silver triangle which
surrounds the logo. I could do this by using the paint tool and paint over it with a grey tone.
Also, I would improve the size of the text so it doesn’t take up too much space. I would do this by
reducing the size to something that’s still clear to read, but so the image can be seen a bit more.
Aesthetic Qualities
Does your work look good?
I think the layout looks good because it’s unique which draws in the audience’s attention. It’s laid out in quarters
which helps to organise the text, making it more readable for the audience. I like how the images are set out down
one side of the page. This looks smart and shows a variety of different cars to appeal to the audience. Also, it adds a
bit more colour to the double page spread which only uses three colours.
I’m pleased with the way the title font has turned out because it covers both pages, which makes the reader aware
that it’s one big article. I like the font choice because it’s easy to read and it’s big and bold and it contrasts well
against the background. I chose this font because it continues with the theme of heat and speed, although it‘s black.
I wanted to make the colour red, but was unable to.
I’ve used different ways of laying the text out (e.g using bullet points to make lists of things) which helps make it
easier to read and makes it look organised.
Was it creative?
It was creative because I wanted to change the background colour. I thought having a plain white with black text
would look boring and the reader would lose interest in looking at the page. Also, the original layout had to be
changed because although it was set out in columns, it was difficult to read and the text wasn’t flowing the way I
wanted. This also made putting images on the page easier because I would have found it hard to fit images if I used
the old layout.
What aspects of your magazine visuals do you like?
I like the background colours because it makes the text stand out and it’s interesting to look at. It’s unique and it ties
the magazine together with the font colours on the front cover. Also, it makes the text easier to read because if it
was a plain white background, it could have been too bright for some readers. These colours in my opinion are easier
on the eye.
What would you improve? How would you improve it?
I would improve the strip of images by stretching the text background colours behind them to create a more
cohesive piece. I could work on reducing the size of the text in each quarter so it doesn’t overflow into the next
quarter. To help with this, I could put each section of text into it’s own smaller text box.
I would change the size of the subheadings because they’re the same size as the text in the articles. This could
confuse the reader because it’s not very clear of when the subject of the article is changing.
I will check whether a font’s colour can be changed before making a decision about using it in the future. I will also
think about adding the logos of each insurance company in the list. This will help to the readers to recognise the
brands whilst also adding visual interest to a text heavy page.
Aesthetic Qualities 2nd double page
Does your work look good?
I think the layout looks good because it’s colourful. It’s been laid out with two articles on one
side of the page and two on the other, with images next to them to show what they’re talking
about. This organises the text and doesn’t confuse the readers. Although there’s more text than
images, the images are big and clear to see.
The title of the page covers both pages. This tells the reader the page is one big article. I’m
pleased with the way this font has turned out because it’ stands out, it’s big and bold and it’s
easy to read.
Was it creative?
I wasn’t planning to do another double page, but because I couldn’t fit all the text on the first
page, I decided to make a second one. I wanted to change the background colour because
having a plain white background would have looked boring and the reader would lose interest.
Also, the images didn’t stand out as well as they do on the orange background.
I was going to lay it out different by putting all the images together, and have text going around
them, but I had trouble with putting the text around, but I thought it confuse the reader
because they wouldn’t know which equipment they would be reading about.
What aspects of your magazine visuals do you like?
I like the background colour because it makes the whole page stand out, the text and images
contrast well against it. The images because they show what the article is talking about.
What would you improve? How would you improve it?
I would improve it by stretching the background colour to the top of the page. This would make
the title stand out better. Also, I would make the text cover the whole width of the page. I
would do this by reducing the size and adding an extra space between each word.
I would organise the text by putting the name of the object at the top and underline it, and put
the information underneath it. Also, I would put the images down one side of the article. This
would make the page look more tidy.
I would replace the image of the torch because it doesn’t blend in well with the background
colour. I would do this by either taking a photo of mine at home or using the internet to find an
image. It would need to be a colour that contrasts against the background.
Audience AppealHow have you appealed to your target audience?
I’ve made my magazine appeal to my target audience by creating a magazine that’s aimed at new/young drivers. I’ve done this by doing research into the
things these people need to be aware of e.g low price, reliability, Insurance etc. Overall, it’s the text that appeals most to the audience because of what it’s
talking about.
What specific bits of content would appeal to your target audience
The first bit of content that will appeal to the audience is the masthead because I used a unique font which links to the subject of the magazine. Hopefully this
will make them want to read it. The second bit of content that will appeal is the font of the bottom cover line because it’s different to what other people
would use. Also, it links to the subject it talks about because insurance can cost a lot and could “break the bank”.
The colour scheme I chose looks appealing because they work together to make the page stand out and look professional. If I used lots of different colour, it
wouldn’t look good because it would look too busy which wouldn’t make it look appealing.
The photograph looks good because I used Photoshop to edit it. I used the sopt removal tool to remove the dirt/unecessary marks, and I used the burn tool
and selection tool to remove distractions in the background. If I used the original image, the page wouldn’t be as appealing because it would make the page
look messy.
The background colour on the first double page would appeal to the audience because it’s different to what other car magazines use which is usually a plain
white background with big images and small text. I wanted to add colour because it makes it easier to read and I thought the reader would lose interest quick
if I used a white background with black text. Also, the font used in the title will appeal to the audience because it links to the subject of the magazine. I think
the way the text is laid out will appeal to the audience because it’s set out in a different way to what other car magazines use. My original idea wouldn’t have
appealed because it wouldn’t fit all the text on the page and there wouldn’t have been enough room for images. This would have lost the readers interest
because there would have been nothing that jumps out at them.
On the second double page, the images would be the first thing the audience notice because they’re the biggest feature on the page. This is something they
will want to look at because having a page withjust text on it would lose the audiences interest. I think the title would be the next thing they see because it’s
not got the same colour background. I think the final feature they would is the articles because although they are big and clear to see, it looks like there’s a lot
of text, which would lose the readers interest. I wanted the text to be smaller, but there would have been too many gaps on the page.

7. evaluation(1)

  • 2. Research • For my research I looked at three different magazines, and looked at the features of the front covers and double pages. I also looked at genres, target audience, text to picture ratio, font choices, colour scheme and what the magazine symbolises. I looked at some of the phrases and talked about what they could mean/who might say them. • A strength of my research is it really helped me with how to layout my magazine and what features to put in. Also, it helped with my target audience and how to make my magazine reach out to them. • A weakness is I would have liked more time to look into the car industry in more detail. This is so I could put more useful information in my magazine. • Most of my research was on the internet looking at magazines. These magazines didn’t have very good layouts becasue everything was listed. I looked at some printed magazines, but it would have helped if I looked in more printed magazines because they have better layouts, which would have given me a better idea of how to make my layouts look better.
  • 3. Planning • I made three mind maps of magazine ideas. These were between Cars, Comedy and TV shows. The best one to make was the car magazine because I had more ideas for that than the others. • I made a list of everything I needed to do and what day to do them on. This was so I didn’t get stressed and I could manage my time better. • Although the plan helped, I didn’t follow all if it because I got stuck on certain tasks. While I was thinking of what to do for the task I was stuck on, I started working on something else which helped me get further ahead. • Some of the features on my mood board are on websites that are blocked in college, however I was able to access them from home. Next time, I will look for alternative websites if one I want to use is blocked in college. This would help me work a bit quicker because then I wouldn’t be looking for alternative websites for a long time.
  • 4. Time Management • I managed to finish my magazine in the time given, although I missed a lesson due to circumstances. • I managed to follow the schedule for the first two weeks with researching and planning it, but in production I didn’t follow it. I had to finish writing my articles which took all of the first day. I started my production the next day and decided to make my double page first because I thought it would take up most of the time. • On the third day, I started making my front cover because I got stuck on my double page spread. This helped me get further ahead so I could finish everything quicker.. • If I had more time, I would re-design the double page flat plan because the original layout didn’t look suitable enough. This would have helped because I wouldn’t have got stuck on how to make the new layout
  • 5. Technical Qualities front cover differences • The colours on my magazine are darker than the other one. The other one has used brighter colours to make the page stand out. • Mine has a lot of text which takes up a bit of space. The other magazine doesn’t have a lot of text which makes the image clearer to see. • The image on my magazine isn’t as clear as the other one because I didn't use a professional camera. The other image is a lot clearer and shinier because a professional camera has been used. • The text on the other magazine isn’t the same size, but it makes the page look professional, and it doesn’t take up all the space. The text on my magazine is the same size throughout which takes up a bit of space. • The other magazine has more than one car in the background which will draw the audiences attention in more than what mine does. Mine only has one car which makes it look like it focuses on one model. • The other magazine looks more modern than mine because it has newer cars on the front. Mine looks a bit older because it has an older car on the front. • The other magazine looks like it’s aimed at an older audience because the cars are very expensive. My magazine is aimed at a young audience because it has an image of a cheap car on the front, which they will be able to afford. • The backgrounds are different. My photo has been taken in a car park and the background image hasn’t been edited. On the other magazine, a photographer will have taken a photo of the background and edited it to make the image look cleaner and professional.
  • 6. Technical Qualities front cover similarites • They’re both car magazines which talk about the same subjects. The purpose of them is to advertise reliable/suitable cars and advise people about what to do when they buy a car. • In some places, they use similar text colours (e.g. partly on the masthead). This makes them contrast against there backgrounds and makes them easy to read. • The cover lines are in the same places. This is so they don’t cover the image so much. • They both have been Photo shopped to remove unnecessary marks. This makes the images look better/suitable for a magazine. • They both have a visible number plate. They will have been edited in Photoshop to protect the cars identity.
  • 7. Technical Qualities double page differences • Mine has a colourful layout which grabs the audiences attention. The other magazine has a plain background with black text which could lose the readers interest because it’s more text than images. • The other magazine doesn’t have any subheadings which makes it not as organised as mine. Mine has subheadings on each article which tells the reader what they’ll be reading about. • Mine has a big title at the top which is clear to see. Although the other magazine has a title at the top, it’s not easy to see because it’s small. • The other magazine has a lot of shapes which are eye catching. This makes the text look organised, but it still could do with subheadings. My magazine doesn’t use any shapes which makes the page not as good to look at because… • The other magazine has more colour with using shapes and on some of the text, which makes it look less boring and draws the audience’s attention in.
  • 8. Technical Qualities double page similarities • The text looks the same size which gives the pages better consistency. Also, it makes it easier to fit images/graphics on the page. • They both use bold text, but in different places. On mine, I’ve used bold for the subheadings and titles, which tells the reader what they’re reading about. On the other page, they’ve used bold text on images and titles to make the page look more interesting. • The text colour is mostly the same, apart from one word on the other magazine. This also helps to give the pages better consistency. If there were lots of different colours used, the page would look too busy, which would lose the readers interest. • They both use images which makes the pages look interesting. These will draw the audiences attention in because they are something they will want to see.
  • 9. Aesthetic Qualities front cover Does your work look good? I think the work looks good, but it could be improved. The image stands out and the text blends in with the background. I’m pleased with the way the masthead turned out because it fills the top of the page, it’s big and colourful and it contrasts well with the background colour. I like the font colour for the cover lines because they’re bright and they also contrast well with the image and the background colour. Was it creative? The fonts for the masthead and bottom cover line are from the website dafont. I chose the masthead font because it gives the idea of speed and heat which relates to cars. I chose the font for the bottom cover line because I like the breaking/shattering style and I think it links in which the subject of insurance because it can cost a lot of money and it can ‘break the bank’. Also it can link in with the idea of something broken being fixed through insurance. I made this font bigger because it’s the main article in the magazine. This acknowledges text hierarchy where important articles are more noticeable. The other cover lines are smaller because they’re further down in the text hierarchy. The colours i’ve chosen for all the fonts are associated with heat and flames which links back to the speed theme used in the masthead. What aspects of your magazines visuals do you like? I like the slightly dark background because it makes everything clearer and shiny. The articles I chose to write about would draw the audiences attention in and make car enthusiasts read it. Even though it’s hard to tell, I like the editing I did on the number plate which changed the lettering and numbering to change the identity of the original number plate image I used. This makes the number plate look authentic. I like the flame font style on the masthead because the heat theme links in with the subject of the magazine. What would you improve? How would you improve it? I would improve the editing I did on the trim of the bonnet which I think I made too bright/white using the spot removal tool. This could be darker so it matches the colour of the silver triangle which surrounds the logo. I could do this by using the paint tool and paint over it with a grey tone. Also, I would improve the size of the text so it doesn’t take up too much space. I would do this by reducing the size to something that’s still clear to read, but so the image can be seen a bit more.
  • 10. Aesthetic Qualities Does your work look good? I think the layout looks good because it’s unique which draws in the audience’s attention. It’s laid out in quarters which helps to organise the text, making it more readable for the audience. I like how the images are set out down one side of the page. This looks smart and shows a variety of different cars to appeal to the audience. Also, it adds a bit more colour to the double page spread which only uses three colours. I’m pleased with the way the title font has turned out because it covers both pages, which makes the reader aware that it’s one big article. I like the font choice because it’s easy to read and it’s big and bold and it contrasts well against the background. I chose this font because it continues with the theme of heat and speed, although it‘s black. I wanted to make the colour red, but was unable to. I’ve used different ways of laying the text out (e.g using bullet points to make lists of things) which helps make it easier to read and makes it look organised. Was it creative? It was creative because I wanted to change the background colour. I thought having a plain white with black text would look boring and the reader would lose interest in looking at the page. Also, the original layout had to be changed because although it was set out in columns, it was difficult to read and the text wasn’t flowing the way I wanted. This also made putting images on the page easier because I would have found it hard to fit images if I used the old layout. What aspects of your magazine visuals do you like? I like the background colours because it makes the text stand out and it’s interesting to look at. It’s unique and it ties the magazine together with the font colours on the front cover. Also, it makes the text easier to read because if it was a plain white background, it could have been too bright for some readers. These colours in my opinion are easier on the eye. What would you improve? How would you improve it? I would improve the strip of images by stretching the text background colours behind them to create a more cohesive piece. I could work on reducing the size of the text in each quarter so it doesn’t overflow into the next quarter. To help with this, I could put each section of text into it’s own smaller text box. I would change the size of the subheadings because they’re the same size as the text in the articles. This could confuse the reader because it’s not very clear of when the subject of the article is changing. I will check whether a font’s colour can be changed before making a decision about using it in the future. I will also think about adding the logos of each insurance company in the list. This will help to the readers to recognise the brands whilst also adding visual interest to a text heavy page.
  • 11. Aesthetic Qualities 2nd double page Does your work look good? I think the layout looks good because it’s colourful. It’s been laid out with two articles on one side of the page and two on the other, with images next to them to show what they’re talking about. This organises the text and doesn’t confuse the readers. Although there’s more text than images, the images are big and clear to see. The title of the page covers both pages. This tells the reader the page is one big article. I’m pleased with the way this font has turned out because it’ stands out, it’s big and bold and it’s easy to read. Was it creative? I wasn’t planning to do another double page, but because I couldn’t fit all the text on the first page, I decided to make a second one. I wanted to change the background colour because having a plain white background would have looked boring and the reader would lose interest. Also, the images didn’t stand out as well as they do on the orange background. I was going to lay it out different by putting all the images together, and have text going around them, but I had trouble with putting the text around, but I thought it confuse the reader because they wouldn’t know which equipment they would be reading about. What aspects of your magazine visuals do you like? I like the background colour because it makes the whole page stand out, the text and images contrast well against it. The images because they show what the article is talking about. What would you improve? How would you improve it? I would improve it by stretching the background colour to the top of the page. This would make the title stand out better. Also, I would make the text cover the whole width of the page. I would do this by reducing the size and adding an extra space between each word. I would organise the text by putting the name of the object at the top and underline it, and put the information underneath it. Also, I would put the images down one side of the article. This would make the page look more tidy. I would replace the image of the torch because it doesn’t blend in well with the background colour. I would do this by either taking a photo of mine at home or using the internet to find an image. It would need to be a colour that contrasts against the background.
  • 12. Audience AppealHow have you appealed to your target audience? I’ve made my magazine appeal to my target audience by creating a magazine that’s aimed at new/young drivers. I’ve done this by doing research into the things these people need to be aware of e.g low price, reliability, Insurance etc. Overall, it’s the text that appeals most to the audience because of what it’s talking about. What specific bits of content would appeal to your target audience The first bit of content that will appeal to the audience is the masthead because I used a unique font which links to the subject of the magazine. Hopefully this will make them want to read it. The second bit of content that will appeal is the font of the bottom cover line because it’s different to what other people would use. Also, it links to the subject it talks about because insurance can cost a lot and could “break the bank”. The colour scheme I chose looks appealing because they work together to make the page stand out and look professional. If I used lots of different colour, it wouldn’t look good because it would look too busy which wouldn’t make it look appealing. The photograph looks good because I used Photoshop to edit it. I used the sopt removal tool to remove the dirt/unecessary marks, and I used the burn tool and selection tool to remove distractions in the background. If I used the original image, the page wouldn’t be as appealing because it would make the page look messy. The background colour on the first double page would appeal to the audience because it’s different to what other car magazines use which is usually a plain white background with big images and small text. I wanted to add colour because it makes it easier to read and I thought the reader would lose interest quick if I used a white background with black text. Also, the font used in the title will appeal to the audience because it links to the subject of the magazine. I think the way the text is laid out will appeal to the audience because it’s set out in a different way to what other car magazines use. My original idea wouldn’t have appealed because it wouldn’t fit all the text on the page and there wouldn’t have been enough room for images. This would have lost the readers interest because there would have been nothing that jumps out at them. On the second double page, the images would be the first thing the audience notice because they’re the biggest feature on the page. This is something they will want to look at because having a page withjust text on it would lose the audiences interest. I think the title would be the next thing they see because it’s not got the same colour background. I think the final feature they would is the articles because although they are big and clear to see, it looks like there’s a lot of text, which would lose the readers interest. I wanted the text to be smaller, but there would have been too many gaps on the page.
