Oliver Keppie produced a music video over 4 weeks. In week 1, he brainstormed ideas and chose to create a video for "BIGGEST ALLEY OOP". In week 2, he experimented with camera equipment, editing to the beat, and slow motion shots. Week 3 involved finishing a storyboard and planning shots. He recorded clips using a shoulder rig. In week 4, Oliver edited the clips to the music, added effects, and completed the video.
2. Process – week 1
• This week we started our initial plans. This was where we had to
brainstorm a few ideas and then by the end of the week start to focus
on one idea. I also started to look at some videos for inspiration. I think
it worked quite well because I had a few ideas before I started and I
managed to find one idea that I was happy with from the beginning.
• I started doing background research of the artist and also some of his
music and music videos. I also made a mind map about the three ideas
that I had and then decided on the BIGGEST ALLEY OOP video idea.
This is when I started to look at more specific production techniques
that I was going to do and also started planning my experiments.
3. Process – week 2
• This week I did the experiments and started my storyboard for my music video
project. My first experiment was testing out the camera with different modes of
support. First I tried the Steadicam and it worked out quite well. Some drawbacks
were that it was very heavy and hard to control the amount of sway from the
weighted bottom. This was hard to control but most of my clips are in slow-motion
so it wasn’t too bad. The best one was by far the shoulder rig because it allowed a
lot of control and it is easy to carry and get a lot of movement out of.
• My second experiment was trying to cut to the beat and also the flow of the lyrics.
This was a success and it was quite an easy challenge. I think I carried this out quite
well as some moments were on the beat and had a clean transition and it couldn’t
be noticed unless you were looking out for it, although I think this worked well
because it was subtle but still worked with the music video. I have made the
decision to use this in my music video.
• My third experiment was practicing editing clips in slow motion. I had to record
everything in 1080 resolution and 50 fps. I used all of my clips like this as in most
rap videos use lots of short clips which are in slow motion. This worked quite well
as all of the clips are good quality and can all be slowed down to at least 50% whilst
still looking good.
4. Process – week 3
• This week I worked on the planning for my music video. I started by finishing my
story board which I started last week. I think this turned out well as it had all of
the shots that I am going to use in my video and it also had some shots which I
decided not to use in my video. The only downfall is that since it is in pencil it is
quite hard to read on the computer.
• I then did my pre-production where I wrote in more detail about how I was going
to compose my video and what shots I was going to use. I mainly wrote about
how I was going to use a lot of slow motion shots and also have a lot of filler shots
such as close ups of my hands and face.
• At the weekend, I recorded all of the clips for my video. I decided to take home a
tripod and also a shoulder rig. I used the tripod for 2-3 shots and I used the
shoulder rig for every other shot. The shoulder rig is good as it allowed us to get
high and low and gave more chances to experiment with shots and how we could
manipulate angles to look good. It also had a lot less wobble than handheld and it
helped us get clips which could move around smoothly and let me move freely
and the camera can always manage to keep my face in the middle of the screen. It
also allowed for fast and sudden movements. I have collected a whole range of
clips from places such as a graveyard, basketball court and a house and I have got
a lot of different shot types. Some of them being close ups, a lot of mid shots and
also a few long shots with elements of zooming in and out. Overall I think all of
the shots that I collected were good and all have a vital part and roll in my final
product.
5. Process – week 4
• This week I actually created my music video. On the first day I just focused on
getting all of my clips in time with my video. I also added all of the extra clips
including close ups on hands, basketball shots and other extras. I added all of
these in slow motion and left them at the side of the video so I could cut and
edit them wherever and whenever I wanted to use them.
• I then started to actually cut the clips to the beat of the track and the sound of
the lyrics, or whenever it felt right. I then added a lot of filler clips on parts that
went on for too long or looked strange. Also actual rap videos have a lot of shots
like this placed around everywhere.
• When I thought I had finished and was happy with the clips I added adjustment
layers to every individual clip. To add more saturation and light to the outside
shots, and add more of a subtle amount of brightness to the inside shots. I also
added money falling down on all of the indoors sofa shots and smoke effects to
some of the outdoors shots for effect of fog which could also be interpreted as
being around people who take drugs for thug effect.
