This proposal outlines an interactive horror/mystery game called "Haunting" where players take on the role of someone who has moved into a new house with a graveyard behind it. Every night, a ghost attacks without reason and the player must figure out why and how to stop it. The game is aimed at teenagers and would involve unraveling the mystery of what happened to previous owners through environmental clues rather than being directly told. It draws inspiration from the adventure game "Firewatch" and ensures no offensive content through restricting younger audiences and avoiding topics that could offend social groups. As the story is open-ended for players to interpret, it would have sufficient differences from other works to avoid copyright issues.
1. Proposal for Interactive Media Product
1
Working Title: Haunting
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Product’s Purpose: The product is to entertain those through mystery of the story and how
to survive a threat that you have no clue how to beat. I will do this by having a story where
nothing is told to you without someone thinking about it and things in the environments
that show what happened.
What is the product’s purpose (entertain/educate etc.) and how will you achieve this?
Genre: Horror, Puzzle, Mystery. You must try and stop a ghost from killing you there is no
reason for this and there is no reason why the ghost is attacking you just have to guess
What sort of product is it
Content: It’s about someone who moved into a new house with a graveyard behind it, every
night a ghost comes out and tries to attack whoever is in the house, without a reason, as
the player you must figure out why it is attacking you and how you can beat it.
What is your product about? Discuss what you would put in it (be specific). Does it have a story? If
so, discuss it here
Audience: It would be aimed at an older audience (Teenager) as it would involve the player
unravelling the mystery behind the ghost attack, what happened previously to the old
owners and how to stop or at least prevent/fight back against the ghost
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc
Why would your project appeal to this person?
Research and Planning: I have based it somewhat on a game called ‘Firewatch’ which is an
adventure game where you must watch out for forest fire, but also discover a buried
mystery that took place years ago, but nothing is told to you directly, meaning tha t you
must somewhat learn it yourself
What elements of your research and planning will you use in your final production?
Where will you use your research and planning in your final production?
Legal & Ethical Considerations:
Think about any offensive material you will include? There would be no offensive material
Will you restrict younger people using/accessing it? Yes, younger people would be restricted at
viewing the product due to violence and some photography.
Will it offend any social groups/religions/ethnicities? The product will not offend any
groups/religions/ethnicities.
How will you ensure you do not offend anyone? By making it so the product does not offend or
insult any religions/groups or ethnicities
Are you using characters/names/logos of existing products/IPs? The characters would not be an
existing product of other companies work; the ghost is not named so it would not be a re-
use of the name.
Will you product be sufficiently different from existing products to not get sued for copyright
infringement? Yeah, the product would be different to other project because there is no liner
story, and the user must guess or make up a story of their own choice meaning that it is a
unique story for everyone else.
