This document provides examples of different service sectors in the community of South Surrey/White Rock, BC. It discusses 3 main sectors - public, private/commercial, and non-profit/volunteer. Several specific examples are given for each sector and how they relate to physical education, recreation, coaching or volunteering. The Grandview Heights Aquatic Center, Grandview Heights Secondary School, and Semiahmoo Library are discussed as examples of public sectors. Southridge school, Champion Cheerleading and White Rock Christian Academy are examples of private/commercial sectors. Finally, Semiahmoo Lacrosse Association, Semiahmoo Hockey Association, and Pacific Sea Wolves swim club are discussed as non-profit/
4. NAME: GHAC

The Grandview Heights Aquatic Center is a
recreation centre that has ten, 50m lanes
and nineteen, 25m lanes (depending on
how the pool is set up). There are 4 spring
boards: two boards are 1 m and two 2
meter. There are 5 diving platforms: 1m,
3m, 5m, 7m and 10m. The facility also has
a water slide, whorl pool, two hot tubs and
a leisure pool. The top floor of the facility
has a viewing area and a gym with
multiple pieces of equipment. GHAC is
calcified as a public, recreational service
sector. It was built in 2016 and offers
many different leisure opportunities for
Public & Recreation
This is an example of a public service sector
because the pool is an accessible facility that
promotes fitness, sports, has a variety of age-
related programs and holds events like birthday
parties (Lunn, 2021). GHAC has monthly fees which
go towards running the facility and making sure it
stays safe an clean. The general public is able to use
the facility year round through subsidized fees and
funding from the city of surrey.

5. NAME: GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS
SECONDARY SCHOOL
ADDRESS: SURREY, BC
SECTOR: PUBLIC
Grandview Heights Secondary is a high
school located in Surrey BC. It offers
classes for students from grades 8-12.
They have an array of courses and extra
circular programs for students to chose
from. It is a newly built secondary school
in Surrey. In order to attend GHSS you
need to be within the schools district.
Public & PE
This is an example of a public service sector
because schools give students the chance to
enhance their quality of life and well being (Lunn,
2021). Public schools are non profit and typically
free for students to be enrolled in. They are run
by local government bodies which includes the
schools board (Lunn, 2021). This connects to
physical education for multiple reasons. The
school has a variety of sports teams such as
swimming, track + field, basketball and many
more. Students are able to participate in as many
teams as they see fit. Each grade also needs to
participate in PE class as it is a mandatory class.

6. NAME: SEMIAHMOO
LIBRARY

SECTOR: PUBLIC
Public & Recreation/Volunteer
Semi library is a public library located in surrey BC.
This library is open 7 days a week and offers
leisure and recreation services (Lunn. 2021). By
being open to people of all ages, it “continually
reinforces values and ideals [by] establishing a
healthy lifestyle to the users” (Lunn. p.3). The
spacious library has computers, a variety of books,
and multiple desks so students can have equal
learning opportunities. The only costs that an
individual would need to pay is if a book is lost, or
if they need to use a printer. The library has
volunteering opportunities for the community
hence the Semiahmoo library is classified as
volunteer and recreation.
8. NAME: SOUTHRIDGE

SECTOR: PRIVATE Private & PE
Southridge has multiple
programs for students to
partake in. This includes both
athletics and clubs that run
after school. Southridge is
calcified as a private service
sector because they target a
specific group, and they can
run based on the high demand
and interest in the school. This
is in addition to the high fee
parents pay to enroll their
children (Lunn, 2021).
Southridge is a private school located in
Surrey, BC. Learning opportunities are
offered for K-12. Each student needs to
pay a tuition for the “specialized” and
“high quality” education that is offered
(Lunn p.6).
9. NAME: CHAMPION CHEERLEADING

Private & Recreation/Coaching
Champion Cheerleading is a profitable
commercial sport organization run by
Kate and Kelly in South Surrey BC. This
group is a profitable organization because
“consumers pay and suppliers make
profit” (Lunn, p.6). They are a high level
training group who compete across the
lower mainland and competitions at the
National Level. They were established in
2009 and since then have created a fun
and safe environment for ages 4+.
Recreational and volunteer opportunities
allow individuals in communities to
express themselves and allows people to
benefit physically and socially. This
positively impacts their quality of life
(Lunn, 2021). Champion Cheerleading is a

Private & PE/Volunteer
White Rock Christian Academy is a private
Christian high school and elementary school located in
Surrey, BC on 152nd street. It offers learning
opportunities as early as pre-k up until grade 12. In order
to attend this school, you need to pay a tuition and be
accepted into the program. The high school offers a IB
diploma in grades 11-12. This private school “increases in
employment opportunities” in addition to an “increase in
recreation opportunities” through the extra circular
activities offered (Lunn, p. 7).
WRCA has a variety of sports teams that are
available for all students to partake in. For example:
basketball, volleyball, golf, gymnastics, badminton, track
and field, cross country and more! There are also multiple
opportunities for student to get involved with their
community through CAS. CAS is a mandatory program,
within IB which teaches students the importance of
getting involved and staying involved within your
community. CAS stands for COMMUNITY, taking ACTION
, and SERVICE.
12. NAME: SEMIAHMOO LACROSSE
ADDRESS: WHITE ROCK, BC
SECTOR: NON-PROFIT
Non-Profit & Recreation/Coaching
Semiahmoo lacrosse is a sport/leisure
activity offered for kids ages 5+ in
Surrey/White Rock. There are multiple age
levels within Semiahmoo: pewee, midget,
bantam, junior, and senior. Semi is run by
volunteer coaches, timers (often parents),
and officials. There is a small cost at the
start of each season which goes towards
renting the arena and team travel. It
“generates enough profit to cover costs
only” (Lunn, p.9). As a former semi player,
I was able to help the younger teams as
well as fundraise for my own team. This
was a very popular sport when I was
involved so we had enough girls to put
together a team and win provincials 3
times!

13. NAME: SEMI HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
ADDRESS: SURREY, BC
SECTOR: NON-PROFIT
Non-Profit & Recreation/Coaching
Semiahmoo Hockey is a sport/leisure activity offered to the
community ages 5+ in Surrey/White Rock. There are 4 age
ranges within Semiahmoo: pewee, midget, bantam, and
beer league (for adults). Due to the high interest in hockey,
there are multiple groups within the same age. Each player
is evaluated at tryouts and divided depending on their skill
levels. Very similar to the Semi Lacrosse group, the hockey
team is run by volunteer coaches, timers (often parents),
and officials. Semi hockey “runs all the time” (Lunn, p.9). The
ice hockey season takes place during the winter months of
the year and ball hockey starts in the spring. There is a fee
at the start of each season which goes towards any costs,
mainly renting the facilities.
Semi hockey is classified as a non-profit organization that is
for recreational and volunteer purposes.
14. NAME: PSW
ADDRESS: WHITE
ROCK/SURREY, BC
SECTOR: NON-PROFIT
Non-profit & Recreation/Coaching
Pacific Sea Wolves is a swim club located in
Surrey/White Rock. There are over 300
swimmers within the club. The competitive
groups within PSW are Sea Puppies, Sea
Wolves, Junior, Youth, National Development
and Western Development. The non-
competitive groups are high school fitness,
masters and Swim+Dive. The club is open to
swimmer ages 5-19 years old. And anyone
over the age of 20 years old will swim in the
masters group. The club runs out of teo
facilities: GHAC and Surrey indoor pool. PSW
rely’s on the coach and swimmer relationship
in addition to fundraising to keep kids
involved and the club running (Lunn. 2021).
The club is classified as a non-profit
cooperation, specifically athletics. PSW would
not be able to run without our members and
volunteers.
