PUBLIC?
• Maple Ridge Secondary would be categorized as public as
it is a public high school that is free is be enrolled in, and
easily accessible for the residence around it. MRSS also
give the students many different opportunities in sport and
leisure to choose out of, from basketball and rugby to
chess club and theatre

PHYSICAL
EDUCATION?
• MRSS relates to SPSC 2210 by having multiple
courses/after school activities that promote physical
education and staying fit and healthy. While MRSS has
mandatory P.E up until grade 10 for all students, once
you’ve reached grade 10 you can choose from different
types of P.E course, such as; SuperFit, Weight Training,
Conditioning, etc.. MRSS also offers many different sports
you can choose from, such as; rugby, basketball, ball
hockey, field hockey, etc.. All are examples of different
options of physical education that MRSS has to offer

PUBLIC?
• Maple Ridge Leisure Center is a public leisure center that
includes; swimming pool, gym, and basketball/volleyball
courts, while also having an area for a daycare and art
studios. The Maple Ridge Leisure Center is considered
public as it provides “Fitness, sport, age-related programs,
events,[and] arts, [while also being open to the] General
public” (Lunn, 2020, p. 3).
7. WHY
RECREATION?
• It being open to the public and to all ages is what makes
the Maple Ridge Leisure Center a place for recreation. It is
explained that "Recreation services should be
commensurate with individual and collective interests and
serve the need of the total community” (Lunn, 2020, p. 5),
which is why the leisure center is considered a recreational
place as it offers so many different facilities to chose from.
They also make it very accessible for the community by
having low fees to get in while also having one in almost
every community.

• Ridge Meadows Bruins Rugby Club gives a great place for
people of all ages and genders to come out and learn
something new. Many people play rugby as their first sport
and need a lot of time to learn the new skills, this makes it
a great atmosphere for coaching in addition to learning.

• The athletic department at Maple Ridge Secondary school

students the chance at coaching and leading different
sports team the students might specialize in.

• MRSS athletic department gives their students different
tools and guides to help them with learning/building on
their ability to coach. While most teams need also a
teacher to help them with the coaching, there has been
many instances where the student is capable enough to
coach the youth teams themselves.
