4. NEW
WESTMINSTER
SECONDARY
SCHOOL
https://nwss.ca/
Connection to SPSC 2210
New Westminster Secondary School is
connected to SPSC 2210 through its
facilitation of Physical Education. The
school offers great amenities to aid in the
physical educations, such as Four
Gymnasiums and a Large Sports Field.
The school also supports recreation
activities in a pursuit to “reinforce values
and ideals of establishing and maintaining
a healthy lifestyle” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 3)
within the students.
Why The Public Sector?
New Westminster Secondary School is in the
public sector because it provides physical
education and recreation opportunities for youth
that are “essential to a person’s physical and
social well-being and to overall quality of life”
(Lunn, 2020, pg. 5).
5. QUEENSBOROUGH
MIDDLE SCHOOL
https://queensboroughschool.ca/
Connection to SPSC 2210
Queensborough Middle School focuses on
developing life-long skills and an appreciation
for heritage and history. To aid them in this
quest they offer a diverse and inclusive
Athletics Program, the program features
Volleyball, Basketball and Floor Hockey teams
for their students in grade 6 – 8. This directly
speaks to Queensborough’s influence in
recreation by promoting “health and well-
being” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 4) as well as intent
towards the “[preservation] of cultural
heritage” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 4).
Why the Public Sector?
Queensborough Middle School falls under the
Public Sector because it is an education
establishment created strictly for the “good of
society”(Lunn, 2020, pg. 3) and is focused on the
youth within the “general public” (Lunn, 2020, pg.
3) of the community.
6. NEW
WESTMINSTER
YOUTH CENTER
https://www.newwestcity.ca/parks-and-recreation/facilities/new-west-
youth
Connection to SPSC 2210
The New Westminster Youth Center connects to SPSC 2210
through recreation and leisure. There are Youth & Sport
Drop-In’s at the youth center between 3:15pm – 9pm Mon –
Thur and 3:15pm – 11pm on Fri – Sat. The Youth Center
“plays a significant role in the creation of cohesive and
quality communities” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 5) by providing a safe
place for the youth of the community to come after school
and have social experiences and physical growth
opportunities.
Why the Public Sector?
The New Westminster Youth Center
provides “age-related” services like youth
drop-in “sport” and facilitates a space for
creation, “events, and leadership” (Lunn,
2020, pg. 3). The youth center works
directly for the good of the youth within
the community.

BASEBALL
ASSOCIATION
https://www.newwestbaseball.com/

New Westminster Baseball Association provides great
opportunities for leisure and recreation sport. There are
often skilled coaches involved in the physical education of
the athletes. This ties directly into all three categories of
SPSC 2210: “physical education, recreation & coaching”
(Lunn, 2020, pg. 1).
Why the Non-Profit Sector?
New Westminster Baseball Association falls
under one of the categories of non-profit
corporations: Athletics and Sports. The
Association is run by volunteers and meets

organization: “organized, private, non-profit
distributing, self-governing, and voluntary”
(Lunn, 2020, pg. 8).
9. NEW
WESTMINSTER
MINOR HOCKEY
ASSOCIATION
https://www.facebook.com/NewWestRoyals/
Connection to SPSC 2210
New Westminster Minor Hockey
Association provides an
opportunity for coaching and
physical education in the
community. Hockey has a very
distinct, albeit sometimes toxic,
“organizational culture” (Lunn,
2020, pg. 10), however, under the
right circumstances it can be a
great place to “invest in leisure,
recreation and the future” (Lunn,
2020, pg. 10).
Why the Non-Profit Sector?
While some Hockey Associations
charge premiums for profit, the New
Westminster Minor Hockey
Association relies on “user fees &
fundraising”, “corporate
sponsorships”, and “donations”
(Lunn, 2020, pg. 9) to operate. This
falls under the Profit-making for
sustaining services” (Lunn, 2020, pg.
9) category of a Non-Profit Sector
organization.
10. NEW
WESTMINSTER
MINOR SOFTBALL
http://www.newwestsoftball.ca/
Connection to SPSC 2210
The New Westminster Minor Softball organization’s
main focus is to develop the skills of softball while
helping facilitate the creation of long lasting
friendships. This falls under the Physical Education
and Recreations aspects of SPSC 2210. It also
provides an opportunity for Coaching as they
“provide funding for coaches to obtain training and
certification” (NWSB, 2020).
Why the Non-Profit Sector?
For starters on of NWMSB’s main goals is to
facilitate long lasting friendships, which falls under
the “invest in the future” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 10)
category of a non-profit organization. The
organizations investment into the volunteer coaches
to help improve the overall experience for the
athletes would also fall under the “invest in the
future” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 10) category of a non-profit
organization. The organization is also sustained
through “user fees, donations, and sponsorships”
(Lunn, 2020, pg. 9).
