• It is flavone, a highly yellow coloured
substance.
• It is water soluble vitamin. Body can’t store it.
• Not synthesized in humans
• It was first isolated from milk, so it is also
called lactoflavin.
3. FUNCTIONS : (RIBOFLAVIN) :
1. Essential for body growth. Vital role in
intracellular respiration : anti oxident.
2. Helps for carbohydrate, Protein, fat
metabolism.
3. Helps in health of the mouth, skin, eyes and
mucosa of intestine.
4. Helps retina to transfer light stumuli in to
nerve stimuli.
5. Responsible for the yellow color of urine :
occurs when taking vitamin tablets.

1. Green leafy vegetables especially
spinach, legumes, tomatoes, almonds,

7. :: Deficiency of Riboflavin ::
• B2 Deficiency common in Africa, Asia
• Following increase risk of riboflavin deficiency
1. Poor dietary intake : Starvation, fasting,
Anorexia nervosa
2. Decreased Absorption : Malabsorption, Celiac
disease
3. Increased losses : Chronic diarrhoea,
Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
4. Increased utilization : Pregnancy, Breast
feeding, liver disorders

SYMPTOMS : DEFICIENCY ::
Dry Skin, hair fall
(seborrheic
dermatitis) and
growth is retarded.
