1. Q5- WAS THE EDITING USED
ENOUGH FOR THE MEANING
TO BE CLEAR AND WAS IT
GOOD?
BY J O S E P H S H E P H E R D
2. WHY THIS QUESTION?
This question was important to ask as editing can often enhance a music video and make
it a better over all product or damage it and make it less effective. Since me and Caity
had both never edited any form of video on final cut pro x or any editing software before
this project we both felt the need to ask this pressing question and see how people felt
our editing affected the themes, the message and the narrative.
3. OVERALL RESPONSE
The overall response to this question was very good, everyone we asked said that they
felt the editing was clear and concessive as well as communicating the message to the
audience clearly. However one comment we received was keen on the visual effects but
not to much on the continuity editing “ the visual effects of the video were good
however certain parts of the video didn't make sense to me for example he woke
her up out of bed and the next moments she's walking out the house from him”
Feedback on editing
People who liked the editing disliked the editing
This comment sates that they like the visual effect,
But that they do not like the continuity editing
4. RESPONSE TO COMMENT
“ the visual effects of the video were good however certain parts of the video
didn't make sense to me for example he woke her up out of bed and the next
moments she's walking out the house from him”
This comment provides good constructive feedback, our videos narrative is very abstract
in its nature so it is okay if people don’t fully understand what's going on. From this
comment, ot shows me and Caity that we could of worked on our narrative and
continuity to make it ever better.
5. INTERESTING RESPONSE
“The vignette mask used in editing pushes the sad narrative as it gives off a dark
feeling, the lack of cutting on the beat and use of cross dissolves suits the music
perfectly as cuts on the beats would have been too sharp and wouldnt have
matched the slow beat/pace of the song. The actors are also synchronised perfectly
throughout. Another thing I liked was the diegetic sound added at 3 mins 20 as this
is quite unconventional for a music video but it worked very well and added
uniqueness to the video “
This response shows us that the editing Me and Caity used is effective and works in
conjunction to the song. It also shows us that our editing matches our narrative and
enhances it making it clearer to the audience.
6. RESPONSES THAT SHOW OUR
EDITING WORKS
“ A touch I liked was the blue and green colour grading for different stages of the relationship. There was a nice
use of fades to show gradual deterioration, but knowing when to employ a dramatic straight cut. However, at
the end with the editing of multiple time periods at once I was a little confused as to the timeline’s relationship
with each other. Were the greens/blues getting more saturated as things got worse? Is there a way to reinforce
that? This is not an editing comment and more about composition, but I liked the ironic contrast of the phone
screen having a background of “I’m Over You” and the text message reading “I’ve never been so happy”. “
“yes, it was clear. I thought that I looked great and was creative. “
“I liked your editing and split screens”
7. IN CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I feel like this question speaks testament to the editing skill of Caity and
myself, as there are many comments praising the work we have done saying that it not
only changes the scene well but ads to the atmosphere and communicates a message to
the audience which is one of the most important parts of a media product.
