1. Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Once everyone’s trailers were finished within the class we all came round to present our
trailers to each other to get our feedback on them, the way it worked was each person
got a bit of paper and had to right a few points on each trailer as to why they thought it
was good and why they thought it was bad, the audience amongst the class ranged from
17-19 so this was within our target audience so it was a big help to us. We received a lot of
feedback and we noticed a general pattern as to what the negatives we needed to work
on and the positives which made our trailer stand out from the rest. I was quite pleased
with the feedback we received as I could see watching it on a bigger screen and with an
audience the negatives myself which we couldn’t as a group. Not only did we get written
feedback it gave us a chance to look at our audiences physical reaction towards it to
which also proved a helpful thing as we could change the parts that didn’t get the
reaction we were hoping for.
Like any big movie production would do we cracked on with changing the negatives
straight away to improve our trailer. Production companies rely on the feedback and the
research they do to give them a slight start up knowledge of whether it’s going to be a
success or not. And the feedback they receive only makes the trailer/film better for the
audience.
The feedback we got within the weaknesses was all quite similar and when creating the
trailer we had some idea they may be the negatives within our trailer the most common
ones to come up were; the font came up 2 times, too much running came up 2 times, the
baby laughter came up 6 times we thought this would be the most common one, the
Facebook group came up 5 times due to the fact you couldn’t tell the storyline from it,
and on that the storyline came up 4 times but this ties in with the Facebook part, and
finally the pace throughout didn’t work. After we received this feedback as a group we
went back to the computer with our product and changed the big negatives we got that
could be adjusted in the time we had, these being the baby laughter which we got rid of,
we shortened the chase scene and added a few different bits of footage we had, also we
played around with the sound a bit more to try make it flow a bit better than it did. The
other negatives we got were difficult to change in the time we had and the material we
had to work with, so we left them as the positives will shine through a lot more now we
got rid of the bigger negatives.
However the positives we received were more than what we thought we’d get. We had
an idea of what we thought was good and what wasn’t but we were very pleased to
receive news on what our audience thought about the good side of our trailer, as a group
we were over all most pleased with our ending shot of the killer hanging himself, and we
were right to feel this because our ending shot got a total 7 positive remarks made about
it, a shot we didn’t think would be so pleasing was the to cut walks/runs we had the first
one when the killer is running down the alley way and the 3 friends are walking down it
2. and we jump cut to give it the effect they are being followed this got very good
feedback, as well as the church shot at the end when we jump cut the killer walking
down the aisle. We also took a lot of pride when filming our church shots as we believed
these were the most accurate and gripping shots, and the feedback we got back for the
church and grave shot proved we should have been as the audience enjoyed these shots.
A contrasted bit of feedback was the quotes, we thought with the religious theme we
would go with bible quotes as our tag lines throughout the trailer to fit in, this got an
equal amount of good comments as it did bad so we decided against changing it and
went with it as we liked the idea and so did the majority of our audience. Overall our
positives healthily balance out with the negatives and now we have changed the
negative points I personally belief if we got more feedback there would be more
positives than negatives, we were happy with the feedback we got and hope the
changes we made have improved our trailer. We believe our trailer fits in more with the
common codes and conventions of horror in which we aimed to meet.
