1. Question 3-
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
To gain audience feedback we uploaded our final music video on to YouTube which allows people
to comment on the video expressing their opinion. To get more feedback we created another
focus group with 5 people who are all included in our target audience.
Positive comments
Our focus group gave us a variety of comments however they were mostly positive. They all
seemed to really like the video in general with not a lot to complain about which was a god sign.
Ellis said that he really liked the editing and how it was done, he liked he cuts on the beat and said
it was a good idea and it worked really well. Jess explained that she really liked the storyline and
she said it was clear which was a good thing as sometimes in music videos there is clearly a
storyline but it’s not always apparent what it is. As we uploaded it on YouTube people are free to
comment on it and say what they liked and or didn’t like, we did actually get a few comments and
they were mostly positive. They all said they really liked the use of different locations and how we
edited it.
The comments made about my digipak and advert were again mostly positive as in the focus
group they all said they really liked them and how I’d made them. For example, Jess said she really
likes the use of bright colours as they are eye catching and makes it look interesting. Ellis said he
liked how the main image is on another image that spreads across all three panels. Again the
comments made about my album advert were also mainly positive as Joe said he liked how both
products were quite closely linked through the use of a similar theme and colour scheme, similarly
Jess said she liked how I used the same font across all three of the products as this can built up a
house style or brand identiy.
2. Negative comments
Overall most of the comments we received were positive
however there were a few that weren’t so much as
negative but it was constructive criticism on how we
could improve or do somethings differently. A comment
that we received more than once was about the shots of
the
phone
and
how we
could
maybe make it look better and more clear. Another comment was about the acting, as we were
just using our friends to act in the video their performances may not have been as good as they
would’ve been if we used actual actors, they said that some parts were quite cringey and maybe
not as realistic as they could’ve been. Apart from a few negative comments most of the feedback
we received was very positive and we are quite happy with everyone’s response.
One comment that I fully understand about my digipak was made by Daisy saying that I could
have maybe not put so much text on the inside panels as it is quite busy so instead I could maybe
include parts of the lyrics in a bigger font. Jess also said I could maybe make both of the images of
the model the same colour instead of one black and white and one colour.
Even though Joe said he liked how both the digipak and advert linked in
together very well he said that it may have been better to make them either
both black and white or both colour as at a first glance you may not
necessarily know they are linked together. Also it was said that I could
probably have included one more review just to make it look like it has
more attention and there a more reasons why people should buy the
product.
How the comments will change the way we work in the future
After receiving all of the comments weather positive or negative we have taken them all on board
and if we were to work on a project similar to this in the future we would probably change a few
things. If we were to film a video similar to this, we would probably spend a bit more time on
trying to get the shots to look as good as they can for example use artificial lighting to reduce the
amount of grainy shots and maybe focus clearer on a phone screen should one be used, so overall
we would probably spend a bit more time on perfecting the shots. Overall all of these comments
will allow me to become better at filming and editing as I will learn from my mistakes.
What the comments taught us about producing and editing a music video
The comments that we received has taught me that nothing is perfect the first time and it all takes
practice. There will always be parts that we can improve on for example we can improve on the
lighting and even some of the cuts as they may be too soon or too late. Therefore, this makes the
audience feedback very important as it tells us what we can improve on instead of us making the
3. same mistakes again. The comments made have been very useful as they have told us what we are
doing right and wrong but also they have made us realise that it isn’t a simple task to produce and
edit a music video, there is a lot of time and effort that needs to be put in to this to get the
outcome you want. They have let us know that in the future we may need to spend more time on
the production side of things as most of the criticism was about the shots and the lighting. The
positive comments are also very useful as they tell us what we are doing right and we can transfer
them into a possible future production.
