The document discusses the film group's process of obtaining audience feedback at different stages of creating their short film "Aftermath". They created questionnaires after developing their initial storyline and rough cut to understand how the audience perceived the genre, storyline, and film overall. Feedback informed music choices, editing improvements, and ensuring the plot was understandable. Questionnaires after the final cut confirmed the audience enjoyed the film and understood the plot. The film group believes they effectively incorporated audience feedback throughout the filmmaking process.
2. INITIAL BRIEF
⢠At the start of our project all four members of our
group came up with a few ideas for potential
storylines to create a short film around. In total we
had 13 different storylines to choose from, some of
which overlapped in ideas. Eventually we came up
with the storyline for âAftermathâ. Although we
decided upon the storyline we made alterations
throughout the process, to make the storyline more
appealing and alter it to fit with our audience
feedback. To obtain our audience feedback we
created a video questionnaire to gain insight into
what our target demographic thought to our idea.
The questionnaire consisted of a synopsis of our
storyline, and a series of questions asking for there
opinions and any improvements. In total we asked 5
people, all of which we used to alter our storyline.
3. WHAT GENRE DO YOU THINK OUR
FILM IS?
⢠We asked our five questionnaire participants what genre they thought our film was
based of the storyline we provided them with. Over half the people asked said that
they thought out film was a drama, with a few also saying that it was of the war
genre as well. This was a good result as it is the genres we were aiming for.
4. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON
HOW OUR STORYLINE COULD BE
IMPROVED?
⢠Four out of the five people who we showed our storyline to said that they had no
improvements for our storyline, however one person gave the following feedback,
âReally good musical ques will really help impact the filmâ, this is a piece of feedback
that we took into consideration and took with us through the production of our
film. We used the feedback when it came to editing the film and selecting the music
for it.
5. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU
BELIEVE WOULD SUIT OUR FILM?
What type of music do you
think would suit our film?
Sad Dramatical Classical
⢠We placed the question what type of music do you think would suit our
film, to our questionnaire participants, 3/5s suggested that we used
dramatic music, compared to the 1/5 who suggested sad music and the
1/5 who suggested classical music. We decided to act upon the
suggestion of dramatic music as we thought it would fit with the theme
of our film. Examples of the music used within our film, can be found at
the start of the film, during the flashback scene, this was added to give
the sequence a more dramatic war zone feel, we also added music over
the sequence where Georgie gets out of bed. The decision to add music
over the therapy session, was made to get the audience to sympathise
with Georgie and her situation.
6. ROUGH CUT QUESTIONNAIRE
⢠To produce our rough cut questionnaire we decided to use
Google Forms, we decided to do this as it allowed us to attach
the rough cut film for the questionnaire participants to watch
before answering. By using Google Forms we were able to
create different style questions such as a number rating
questions, paragraph questions, and the standard yes and no
questions.
7. DO YOU UNDERSTAND OUR FILM?
⢠Our main aim from our rough cut questionnaire was to see if our intended audience understood the
plot of our film.
⢠Of the eight responses that our questionnaire 87.5% of the people did understand the plot of our
film. This was what we were intending as it meant that we had made a understandable storyline for
our film. It meant that they understood the plot twist at the end and the fact that Georgie had PTSD
which is the other main point we were trying to get across.
⢠One piece of feedback that we received was that they wished that Charlotteâs status could have been
referenced more throughout the film, this could have been achieved through adding more
flashbacks, more of Charlotte appearing and disappearing, and also more jump cuts throughout
editing. However due to the time limit we had for creating our film (five minuets) we had to limit the
amount we added throughout the film, without giving away too much information linking to the end
of the film.
8. DO YOU THINK THE MUSIC USED IN OUR
FILM SUITS THE OVERALL TONE?
⢠We also asked within the questionnaire if the audience thought that the
music we added to the rough cut suited the tone of our film. Six of the
eight people that we asked agreed that the music we added did suit the
tone of the film, however two people didnât agree. As a group we took
on these views and for our final cut made the amendments.
⢠One piece of feedback that we took on board and changed was the clock
ticking. In the rough cut as Georgie and Charlotte were waiting in the
reception area there was the diegetic sound of a clock ticking, the
comment read âthe clock ticking doesnât fit, the noise at the start is quite
loud and distractingâ. The same person also mentioned that âthe ringing
after the gun shot doesnât fitâ, after going back over that section with
fresh eyes we agreed with the comment and decided to remove it as
well.
⢠The more positive feedback mentioned that the music âmatches the
tempo of the filmâ and that âits appropriateâ, this gave us the confidence
to leave in segments of the music for the final cut.
9. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS SUCCESSFUL ABOUT
OUR FILM AND WHAT SUGGESTIONS COULD YOU
MAKE TO IMPROVE IT?
⢠The last question we asked our audience was what they though was successful about our film and what
could be improved. This was a vital question for us to ask so that we could adapt our film to suit our
target audience.
⢠The audience commented on the use of camera work, particularly the use of camera and lighting, and
the fade used at the end for the reveal. However there were some feedback that we acted on from this
questionnaire, for example we cut down the amount of walking that was present between leaving the
house and arriving at therapy, we achieved this through elliptical editing. The other piece of feedback
we acted on was the âmore extreme close upsâ we achieved this in our final cut as during the therapy
session we gradually zoomed in closer on Georgieâs face, this could then allow the audience to connect
more with Georgie and empathise with her.
10. FINAL CUT QUESTIONNAIRE
⢠For our final cut questionnaire we used Google forms
again, this allowed us to ask a range of questions
again, and also add our final film cut for people to
watch before they answered.
11. HOW MUCH DID YOU ENJOY OUR
FILM?
⢠We asked the audience on a scale of 1 â 10 how much they enjoyed our film. Three
people gave us a 8, while, two people gave us a 9. This was a good response as it
means that we created a good film that people enjoyed watching.
12. DID YOU UNDERSTAND THE
OVERALL PLOT?
⢠Looking at the questionnaire and thinking that it has been answered by a group of
new people who havenât seen any rough cuts, the fact that 100% of the people who
responded, said that they understand the plot. This means that our plot was clear
and we achieved the messages and themes we were aiming to get across.
13. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS SUCCESSFUL
ABOUT OUR FILM & WHAT COULD BE
IMPROVED?
⢠Even though this was the final cut of our film, we decided to ask if there was any
improvements that could have been made, so that it we decided to ether extend the film in
the future or make an entirely new one we have some ideas.
⢠There wasnât any major improvements that were suggested, however there were a few tweaks
that could be made, such as âthe sound levels could do with altering a little to emphasise the
difference between each cutâ, and that âmore characters could have been addedâ, and âcould
have given actors a mic eachâ. These were the good pieces of feedback, that we could take
into consideration for any future productions, however they were things we couldnât achieve
within this production, due to the time scale and resources.
14. OVERALL HOW DO I THINK WE USED THE
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK THROUGHOUT THE
PROCESS OF OUR FILM?
⢠Overall I feel that we acted on the audience feedback well and took there comments
into consideration throughout. We took the information and integrated it within our
work, conveying that we had listened to the audience. Also I feel that from the
questions we asked we achieved a range of feedback with a diverse range of
questions.
