What’s going on? Audience Feedback
Non- target audience feedback To start my feedback for my music video, I asked a group of people that were not in the target audience for my video, for their opinions on what they thought. I did this because I believed it would be a good idea to get the opinion of people from outside my target audience to get a wider opinion and feedback on my video. Specifically, I asked my group what they thought about the narrative of the music video, as I believe the narrative is important as it is what we focussed our video on, with some band footage. I also asked the audience to look at the editing of the video, as again, I believe this was important in communicating the theme of dreams and reality throughout the video.
How i received this feedback In order to get this feedback, I had my music video shown on a projector, so it was on a big screen. I find this was important in getting my feedback, as the larger the image, the more detail the audience were able to see within the video; allowing their feedback to be more useable and accurate. After the audience had seen this video, they all had time to write their feedback to me and my partner. This was a fast and easy way to get feedback, as it meant we were able to get twenty replies in one go. However, it did mean that we were unable to ‘push’ them in their answers to get more accuracy and more specific responses. d It also meant that the audience were only viewing the video once, suggesting the accuracy of their feedback.
The feedback The majority of the feedback we got from this group was positive; suggesting that our music video was a success in communicating our theme of dreams and reality, as without a successful narrative, this theme would not be portrayed as clearly and effectively.
Proof Here are a few examples of proof that our narrative was understood by the group and fitting to our target audience; “narrative and mood suited target audience and song” “I thought the narrative was suitable for the target audience” “Really good narrative- showed the journey of the song and character” “Really like the scarecrow narrative”
Particularly interesting comments I found two comments from this group particularly interesting; “Good, simple, easy to follow.” & “There is a good, clear story throughout” I find these two comments particularly interesting as whilst looking at the final product, I believed the narrative was made a little more confusing and entropic than originally planned, and I started believing this would be reflected in the audience feedback. These two comments reassured me that the narrative was in fact simple, which was our intentions in the first place.
Negative narrative feedback As expected however, there was one comment which suggested that throughout the video, it made no sense up until the end; “The video didn’t make much sense until the clever ending” Although on the surface this appears to be negative feedback as this individual was watching the video not really understanding what was happening, the fact they used the word ‘clever’ whilst describing the ending, suggests that the video did make sense in the end if not whilst watching it. Although this can be interpreted as positive, it makes me question whether, if this video were to be aired on Kerrang, for example, the target audience would continue watching it until the end to see this ending, or whether they would switch over the channel not understanding what’s going on.
Editing comments The other important factor in our music video was the use of editing. For this reason, I asked the group to specifically look at this also, to see if this suits the target audience of the song. All the feedback about the editing appeared to be positive also, suggesting that it suited the target audience.
The proof Some examples from the group to reinforce this includes; “Editing- at the start its good with the blending of sky and woods” “Editing is on the bears and matches the song- good! ” “editing suited pace of song” “really good editing, like the layering of 2 shots together.” “Editing’s really good, especially like the one frame fading out of another. It had a suspicious feel to it.”
Editing conclusion The comments for editing were all positive. Everyone appeared to pick up individual and different ‘likes’ with no dislikes whatsoever. This was extremely pleasing to read as with the increase in media 2.0 and modern technologies, I assumed attracting our teenage target audience would be harder as their expectations would arguably increase as technology also does. Because of this, I am enormously pleased that the same age group as the target audience all liked the editing of the video.
Particularly interesting comments “Liked the ghostly effects- it made me think ‘whats going on’- literally! But the ending made me realise what was actually going on!” “over layering of shots very pleasing to watch” “i loved the capturing of the still hat- very cool” “I liked the flashes at the start- i could tell this was the memory of the character” “I liked the overlays and sped up shots of the sky” “Loved the change in focus in the woods!”
Editing conclusion As the feedback was so varied as each person appeared to pick up on something different, it suggests to me that we used enough different editing styles to attract our teenage target audience; for example, focus pulls, high contrasted clips, sped up clips and over layering of clips. Judging by this feedback alone, undoubtedly the editing appeared to be good enough to attract our target audience, making it a success =D
Feedback conclusion So far, the feedback seems to suggest that the narrative and story of the video made sense to the same age group as the target audience, with only one exception. This suggests that it wasn’t too complicated or confusing for them, which was my main worry after looking back at the video. This feedback has given me some reassurance that the youth will be able to understand the narrative and that it isn’t as complicated as I thought. It also suggests that the editing of the music video addresses our target audience as we had not one complaint or criticism. 
