1. How did you use media technologies in
the construction and research, planning
and evaluation stages?
Photoshop
2. I have never used photoshop before but in order to create the magazine front
cover for Sight & Sound as a promotion method for our film Poker I needed to be
able to.
Photoshop was the primary software I used to create the magazine front cover so
I had to learn the basic knowledge of how to use it in order to create the desired
front cover.
Final front cover
3. Having never used photoshop before everything was new to me
and the initial use of the software I knew little to nothing about
how to use it. Therefore I had to do a lot of research into it and
ask for help from peers when I became unsure of how to do
something that I wanted.
I had to use lots of layers in the
creation of the front cover to be
able to add the picture, texts,
shapes, and much more.
4. This is the tool I used to be able to add
styles and effects to the text which I
used so that I could create dimension
and make them stand out. I wanted to do
this so that they didn’t just look like
words stuck on a page, but instead had
a bit more too them and stood out more
to the audience, leaving them interested
in who ‘Alfred Denish’ is and
encouraging them to read on about the
film ‘Poker’.
After studying lots of Sight & sound front
covers I knew that the text stood out and
therefore I experimented with all these
styles until I found the ones that made the
text look the most realistic and stylish.
5. This is the toolbar in photoshop which at first glance I had no idea
what any of the icons did. However after spending some time
looking into them and experimenting with them I was able to
understand what a majority of them did. This helped me as it
meant when I was editing the photo and the front cover I could
navigate and do so easily.
Having a basic knowledge of these tools meant that I was able to
focus on the more advanced features and editing it exactly how I
had planned it to look, even though some aspects proved a lot
more tricky than I had anticipated so it required a lot more time and
experimenting with different styles and techniques.
6. I was able to adjust the colouring of the picture to
the right tone of black and white using this feature. I
wanted to make sure that it was as a shade where
writing was still visible but it still came across with
noir features through the use of shadowing and
dark colours.
The photo also need sharpening in certain areas
with extra shadowing being added to really make it
look like a noir film promotion.
The colouring tool was also used to change
the colours of text so that they looked the
same as the real sight & sound colours that
are used.
7. As you can see from the
final product on the left I
was able to make a sight &
sound front cover from
scratch which follows all
the typical conventions
and features of a real sight
& sound front cover. This
was down to the use of
photoshop and I think that
this technology software
played a huge role in the
construction of one of my
practical pieces, and
without it I don’t think this
would have been
achievable.
