What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?

2. SpinMedia (formerly Buzz Media) was an American digital publisher which owned a number of
pop culture websites, including Spin, Stereogum, Vibe and The Frisky. It was founded by
Anthony Batt, Marc Brown, Kevin Woolery, and Steve Haldane under the name Buzznet. The
Buzz media name was created as the company started to acquire more pop-culture and music
blogs. In 2009, the company announced it raised $12.5 million in funding. It then acquired Spin
Media, publisher of Spin magazine in July 2012. After shutting down the print version of the
magazine, reducing its staff to about 200, and focusing on advertising, it rebranded itself as
SpinMedia in March 2013. In April 2013 it acquired Vibe magazine.
From research I have found out Vibe magazine is much like my magazine, which means as they
distribute Vibe, they have experience distributing my type of magazine, so therefore this could be
a reason why I pick SpinMedia to distribute my media product. As well as this SpinMedia tend to
be a very internet based company, distributing a lot of products online; as we move into a more
technological world, this could be an advantage for my magazine because the company would
have the expertise to promote and advertise my magazine.

4. Prometheus Global Media was a New York City-based B2B media company. The company was
formed in December 2009, when Nielsen Company sold its entertainment and media division to a
private equity-backed group led by Pluribus Capital Management and Guggenheim Partners. The
company owned and operated a number of major entertainment industry trade publications and
their associated digital properties, including Adweek, Backstage, Billboard, Film Journal
International, and The Hollywood Reporter. In late 2011, Prometheus went through a number
of cost-cutting measures. In August 2011, Backstage was sold to a group of investors, and the
following month, Prometheus laid off the staff responsible for the Hollywood Creative
Directory and announced it had sold the publication.
Much like SpinMedia Prometheus Global Media handles the magazine Billboard which is an all-
genre music magazine. This therefore means this company has an expertise in this type of
distribution and it could really help my magazine prosper. As well as this, Prometheus engages
people and marketers at the intersection of culture’s most powerful forces – Music, Media and
Entertainment. This connectivity makes Prometheus a potent catalyst in influencing popular
culture.

6. Bauer Media Group is a European-based media company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany
that manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and
TV stations around the world. Some of these magazines include Q, Kerrang! and MOJO. Q
started out as a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom. Originally it was to
be called Cue. The Q music brand has expanded to Radio and Television, with Q Radio and Q
TV being music entertainment that specialises in indie, rock and alternative. Kerrang! is a brand
that specialises in rock music. It originally began as a magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was
launched. A Kerrang TV channel also exists. As of 2005 all of Kerrang TV's programme content
is music videos the majority of which is open scheduled for text requests from their playlist.
This company is extremely influential in the media world as they are one of, if not the biggest
Media ownership companies, therefore this would be an extremely good company to work with.
However because of the fact they control so many magazines, adding another one on to their
platform could just mean that they show it less attention because they have other things to worry
about. This could damage the success of my media product.

8. Final Judgement
My final judgement is that I am going to choose SpinMedia because I believe my magazine will
be more successful with their company. I believe this because they have access to both the digital
publication and hard-copy publication, this means I am able to publish my magazine on a number
of different media platforms. SpinMedia is also an extremely successful media company that is
much respected by many other media groups, and the only magazine they have is Vibe so they
will have enough attention to spare, for my magazine in order to make it successful.
