Bauer is an experienced media institution that specializes in distributing music magazines. They have been successful in distributing magazines like Kerrang! and Mojo. I would want Bauer to distribute my alternative music magazine because they have expertise in this genre and could help my magazine reach a wide global audience. 1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION
MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
EVALUATION QUESTION 3
2. WHAT IS AN INSTITUTION?
A media institution is an establishment that is in charge of the distribution, marketing
and production of certain media products. They are often profit based.
Examples:
Bauer is the company who distribute Kerrang and Mojo magazine.
NME magazine is institutionalised by IPC Media – Inspire.
3. EXAMPLES OF MEDIA INSTITUTIONS
Microsoft, BBC, British Sky Broadcasting and ITV work in production, marketing,
distribution and self regulation.
British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) work in regulation.
HMV is a high street store that works in distribution.
4. WHO DISTRIBUTES THE EXISTING PRODUCT YOU
RESEARCHED?
NME magazine’s editor is called Mike Williams and the magazine is institutionalised
by the company IPC Media – Inspire.
IPC Media – Inspire also distributes many more magazines that appeal to different
audiences, for example they own ‘Country Life’ and ‘HORSE’ magazine. Their ‘Inspire’
area of the company is particularly targeting a male market.

The first issue was released on 7th March 1952.

RESEARCHED?
Mojo magazine is edited by Phil Alexander. It has been owned by Bauer since 2008.

6. WHAT COMPANY WOULD I LIKE TO DISTRIBUTE
MY MAGAZINE AND WHY?
I would like Bauer to distribute my magazine as they seem to be very experienced
and successful in distributing music magazine’s, whereas IPC Media special in areas
other than music magazine’s that may not be as successful – therefore I think they
would not have enough time to make my product one of their main priorities. Bauer
have gained a large amount of success while distributing music magazine’s of an
alternative genre. They would help get my product out to a mass audience rather
than a small audience which is great in financial terms as the money could help me
develop my magazine further by including more exclusive features and it would be
more accessible in a wider variety of shops to a global audience. Bauer would
already have a big budget which would support my magazine very well and make it
easily accessible and improve the content (e.g. better competitions, giveaways and
more famous artists). Bauer magazine are also good at digitalising their magazine
companies which could help bring in a larger and more global audience.
7. EXTENDING MY MEDIA PRODUCT INTO DIFFERENT
AREAS
I would like my magazine and logo to extend. I could do this by having slots on
various popular radio stations that are listened to by my target audience. I could also
create my own radio station that plays only alternative music. I could also become a
sponsor for various music festivals or tours. An example of popular festivals would be
Glastonbury, Leeds festival, Isle of Wight or Latitude.
By doing this my product would catch the attention of more possible and larger
consumers. The large amount of people bound to see my logo/product would draw a
lot of attention to it – which will make people want to buy it. Also, if my magazine is
sponsoring someone’s favourite band it makes my magazine appear more trust
worthy and established.
