2. Masthead Research
When choosing a font for my masthead, I made my
class chose a font from certain options I screenshot
from various font websites. By doing this I was
able to narrow down the options I had in mind and
could see from a readers perspective the type of
font they preferred. The conclusion of the survey,
meant I use a landscape type font. When asked
why they chose this font, the majority of people
said they chose it because it presented my
magazine as gritty and urban. I liked the idea of an
urban font, because it made my magazine look
formulated for an urban audience, which I believe
fits my working class audience. The masthead adds
variation to the front cover, which I feel will attract
audiences as it isn’t the same as all magazine
which use mire simplistic fonts.
3. Survey Monkey
I used survey monkey to question
people’s thoughts on things like the
price, genre and articles of the
magazine. By using this website I was
able to successfully put together a
professional and sophisticated survey
that I could present people to take part
in. by doing so I could gain a better
insight into what type of things people
would like to see in their magazine.
4. Front Cover My subject is positioned in the middle of
the front cover. He is standing in a
stereotypical position and follows the
conventions of a stereotypical Hip-Hop
magazine. The shot size is a long shot as it
is from the waist up. The costume is
stereotypical of a Hip-Hop artist, this
choice is because the clothing relates to
the target audience and attracts them
because it is the type of clothing they
wear. The lighting used is high-key so that
the subject is visible and apparent, the
high-key lighting promotes a positive and
optimistic vibe. The fonts on the left are
some fonts I sampled for my cover lines, I
gained inspiration from a magazine front
cover I really liked and tried to find
similar fonts.
5. Contents Page
On my contents page I used a blue gradient
background, I did so because I knew this would
attract my target audience (male 18-34). Blue is a
colour associated with boys and masculinity. The
subject on this page does not make eye-contact
with the audience, which alters from the front
cover image, showing variation in the magazine.
Additionally, I kept to the red, white and black
theme with the writing as I knew this would
attract all types of audiences and all types of ages;
it does not target a particular group of people, and
remains gender neutral.
6. Double Page Spread
My double page spread uses the same
gradient as the front cover, continuing the
gender neutral theme. This colour scheme
means the theme remains consistent and
sophisticated as well as gender neutral. On
this page, I changed the costume of the
subject, making him appear smarter and
presentable. By doing so, I was able to
present my artist as tasteful and stylish. It
therefore shows an alternate side to him
compared to the front cover and contents
page, showing variation in his character
attracting a wider audience.
