1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
Maxwell Allen
2. There are 3 Media publishing companies that I have research and
ones that would be appropriate for my genre of magazine which is
Grime music. I will be introducing them in detail then I will choose
one that I would prefer from the rest…
3. BAUER
Bauer has been managed for 5 generations by the Bauer Family, it was
originally a small printing house in Germany which has later expanded in to
being the third biggest publishing company in the UK. The media group
entered the UK in 1987 with the launch of Bella Magazine and since then as
acquired more companies over the years like Emap Consumer Media and
Emap radio in 2008. It has produced the popular ‘Q’ Magazine and has
expanded it to being a radio show and it has its own ‘Q’ Awards every year
were some of the biggest artists take to the stage to perform in front of
many crowds. ‘Q’ is known all over the world and specialises in indie, rock
and etc. This company produces, distributes and exhibits their magazines in
a variety of ways, you can subscribe to the magazine so you can get your
weekly/monthly magazine, you can get it emailed to you, and you can also
go on their website and download the magazines on to your computer via
the internet. This is the type of publishing company I would prefer as 16-21
years olds would mostly prefer to download the magazine on to their mobile
phones or tablets. Finally as well as that you can get it in the shop with is
good as it mean that other people can view and it can attract other age
groups which is always valid for sales therefore the Cross Media
Convergence of this magazine is good as you can access magazines via
various media platforms i.e. applications on phones which would appeal for
my target audience.
4. HARRIS
Harris Productions are a very experienced publishing house as it publishes
one of the most popular magazines in the U.S which is XXL. It has also
produced magazines such as Guitar World (1980-2003), Revolver (2000–
2003)—acquired by Future US, Scratch (2004–2007), XXL (1997 – 2014) -
acquired by Townsquare Media and elektro (2012 – present). These
magazines were/are some of the biggest magazine which is why I think this
is a respectable publishing company. It focuses on the digital side of
publishing as you can only receive digital copies via email, mobile and tablet
applications. Also you can search it up as it has its own page on social
networking sites, this is effective as a lot of teenagers use Facebook and
Twitter so it could attract them to the magazine. This would appeal to my
age group more who may prefer this format but in my opinion that is not
enough platforms so it would not make my magazine that successful. It is a
US based company which could mean that the magazine could trend
worldwide if the US want to distribute it. In my personal opinion I think that
some of the younger generation would like it to be a hard copy magazine
also so it would be bought in shops globally and it can be accessible to
people who may not have internet access on a regular basis. It may be seen
5. TOWNSQUARE
Town square Media’s headquarters are based in Greenwich, Connecticut. It
started off as a radio station but over the years it expanded in to a well-
known and respected company. After it acquired sister companies Gap
Broadcasting and GapWest Broadcasting, it owned 171 radio stations in 36
radio markets, with concentration in the North-east, Midwest, South-west,
and Mountain states. This will impact my magazine as it showcases music on
various media platforms. It acquired XXL Media, King and Antenna
magazines from Harris publications. It has a well-known past and the
products that have been produced by the magazine has been exceptional. Its
Cross Media Convergence is excellent as it distributes magazines well and in
many ways i.e Phone applications, this would attract my audience as they
may find it more convenient Regent Broadcasting joined the group and
began stream the content to iPhone and iPod. This publishing company
attracts many age groups due to the genres of music it focuses on i.e. Jazz
or pop. My magazine is from 16-21 so having all kind of genres is good and
you can learn about Grime more and its background and Philosophy.
