INITIAL PLANS
Jack Hickman
 Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief- What could you make? What
are you good at? Your opinions?
 Can be a list of bullet points of reactions- does not have to be full prose. Can
be hand drawn and scanned in.
 My initial thoughts to the project is more of a meh as I just thought of it as another project and
thought that I would be able to finish it like all the others. I’m also pretty excited for this project as I
enjoy the short film project much more than the other ones; mainly because I don’t need to worry
about small mistakes like for the video game project and it doesn’t bore me like the print project. In
this project I can improvise some scenes as long as it makes sense and connects well together. As
film is something I enjoy anyway, it somehow makes writing more easier as I am writing about
something that I enjoy. I’m pretty good at acting as long as it is a comedy so, I can exaggerate most
of my actions for comedic effect. Writing bores me but, I do write a lot for some reason, even if some
of it is unnecessary so, I guess I am good at writing out work.
 I could make a comedy skit or something as I feel that I am good at this but, I could always do
another one like an action or horror if I felt like it as I enjoy these genres however, horrors are pretty
difficult to pull off. I suppose I could list these as extra ideas in the mood board. For the secondary
genre, I’ll try something like sci-fi because it is a genre that greatly interests me and can be used to
make something unique. I could also do horror but, I feel that everyone is doing this and I want to
make something more unique. I don’t want to do romance or drama as these genres can be corny
and will probably end up cringing some people out especially when I lack the skills to make one with
a decent plot. Because of this, I’ll probably just have to stick with comedy and sci-fi or just comedy
but, I’ll list all of my plot ideas in the mind maps and I may change my mind then.
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated colours/images
styles/fonts/tone/mood
 The images that I have found for this mood board all have a few things in common. The first of which is that they are all
images from comedy films which is probably very obvious. The second thing to discuss is the fact that all of the images
are taken from comedy films with a duo or pair for the main cast. The images use bright colours which is a convention
typically used in comedy films anyway. The colours used are greens, blues, reds, yellows and whites which are primary
colours but secondary colours have been used in the images as well, colours like browns, greys and oranges. The
images shown have the main characters in the images together, almost as if they are two half's to one whole. This is
shown in a much better way with central intelligence where both of the characters have different skills to complement
each other. For example, Johnson is a spy and has all the muscle and skills for his job but, he lacks social awareness
along with some intelligence which Hart makes up for but Hart is lacking in the areas that Johnson is strong in so, the
two of them compliment each other perfectly. They are the only characters that have this trait as, the others just seem to
have different personalities and the same set of skills. The mood is also very light and happy which is expected from
comedy films that aren’t dark comedies.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
 The mood board will influence my product in a multitude of different ways. I selected these images as I had intended for
the use of a pair of characters in my short film anyway. The colours aren’t really that important in my mind so, I’ll just
use whatever comes up when filming. Despite this, I still intend on using lighter colours for the project as they are
needed for the comedic feel of the product. The difference in characters that these images portray will also be useful as
I want the characters in the project to be different from each other so, the effects of the device they intend on using will
be different depending on the characters that use them. The happy and bright image styles were used in the mood
board. I may also use some of the shots that were shown in the mood board. These shots include close-up, medium
shot, long shot and establishing shot. I will also study more shots and try to put them into my project.
 The techniques I’ll have to study will firstly be the camera shots as I can use these to create a
professional short film. They will also help with structuring my short film as I can sort them out
when creating the storyboard which helps with visual queues. Ill also research some slapstick
comedy techniques because if my product is going to be a comedy with no speech, I’ll have to
rely on the characters actions and their facial expressions to make the audience laugh.
 The resources that I will have to research when making this film include the camera as I have
to research about how to use the focus effectively and how to properly operate it. I will use
survey monkey to help with researching my primary target audience as surveys are relatively
easy to make and the effectiveness of the survey depends on how the questions are worded. I
will use yougov to research the secondary target audience as I only need a source of
information from the internet to do research and yougov is perfect for analysing the audiences
that like comedy and sci-fi films.
 The locations that I will be studying are the ones in college as I will find it difficult to film at
home and my product will be based in college anyway. The locations in college that I will
research are going to be the corridors as this area is a major part of the plot for the film, when
they are walking down the corridor before finding the room with the teleporter and when they
are playing games with it. I also need a classroom or room to use for the place where we find
the teleporter as well however, this might be difficult as most of the rooms are either been
used or are locked. If this is the case then, we might just have to use the corridors instead.
When they are quiet that is.
