3. The first area of research of which I did was the audience. I made a
simple survey which would help me understand my audience and what I
need to include for my project. I got a few people to answer my survey
however from seeing that most people were male making it very unfair
which may not help me make my ideal project. Another week factor about
this survey were that 3 answerers did not take my survey seriously
making it hard for me to find a just audience. I then went to research my
secondary audience from a website called “yougrov”. This website allowed
me to search for a movie and see summary of its audience. I managed to
find out the ages and genders movies attract which lead me to realise
what my project will attract. The weaknesses will be the fact that the it
didn’t give me much more in depth analysis of the audiences.
I then looked at existing products which are similar to my project. I
looked at one short film and two movies. The strength of this research is
that I have learnt shots which would best fit my project to help me fit my
plot in one minute. I researched very similar project and found
inspiration from his work. I wouldn’t say there was many weaknesses
with this stage of researched as I have learnt a lot from it.
4. I made two mind maps to discover what the plot of my film will be
so my for my first mind map I looked into two genres. I made a
plot for the genre “psychological” however it was to ambitious
which would’ve been difficult to make. I made two ideas for
comedy which both had talking which breaks the rules of this
project. Finally my final idea I made a separate mind map. My
mind maps were made very simply and had a lack of detail giving
a rough idea. This made it harder to make a refined film as my
mind map lacked depth. Further in my planning I made a story
board which defiantly improved my idea since the mind map
wasn’t in much detail. This allowed me to capture all the shots
visually and helped me save my ideas onto paper. What I would
improve is to make each transition more clear so that my team
could understand it. I refined this even further by creating a shit
list which made me sure on what shot will work or not. Overall I
think my planning should have been more in depth as my final
product ended up having many mistakes such as continuity errors
braking the immersion.
5. Unfortunately I had to rush near to the ends as my project
became quite ambitious. I couldn’t refer to my timetable as I
realised I couldn’t shoot at the days I wanted to because I
either had work or college. The fact I had to create my project
in many locations meant I had to travel to the areas before
sunset. This made my project very tedious creating mistakes
within the film. While editing I had a fair computer issues
making it a very long process to transfer all my footage to
another computer and reediting all the sounds together. If I
had more time I would defiantly edit all the appropriate
sounds to my work which would improve on the comedy and
realism. Reshoot many messy looking shots or ones with
mistakes getting rid of distracting continuity errors that forces
the immersion out of the audience. To improve on this I would
of rather made a more simple project without too many
locations. I would make my timetable more realistic and
suitable.
6. I think in someway the shots in baby driver are
fairly similar to mine even though baby drivers
shot are more professional and advanced looking.
The first aspect I think is similar are the track
shots which both products use in various ways.
Most shots in baby driver are track shots in
various angles while mine are mostly from the
side of the character. Different angles for the
track shot in baby driver is to capture the tense
scenario and the protagonists paranoia. This
causes many different track shots making sure
the audience can see what both the antagonist
and protagonist while focusing and following the
protagonist. This is very different to mine as my
protagonist isn’t getting chased. I only used the
track shots to capture the pace of the protagonist
but not the scenario itself.
Within baby driver they have many long timed
shots making it seem continues as the chase last
for quite a while however my project last one
minute meaning I have to use quick shots in
order to transition to another location. Both
products use similar transitions to make the
scene look continues like for example both
protagonist run past a tree which causes the
location to change. This helps keeps the pace of
the scenario without and random pauses.

8. Summary
I will be comparing the editing to another one minute short film
called URGENT which includes the protagonist needing the to go
to the bathroom.
Comparison
The intro with both my project and “urgent” is that it’s a blank
canvas using the quality of what the bare camera gives which
ultimately shows that this is reality. This bland look then changes
when both characters then start becoming active with my character
starting to get ready while in “urgent” the protagonist starts
running. Both projects have a change of colour grade. This tricks
the audience to think that there is a lot of action even though they
may have very low key stunts. This also parodies action movies
enhancing the comedy. There are some differences with the
filtering as my projects colour grading is much different. For
example I have enhanced certain colours such as certain colours
which best fits the shots as well as high the contrast while “urgent”
seem to be enhancing the blue with low saturation. Along side the
filtering both my project and “urgent” have black bars to create a
cinematic feel making it escape more from reality and enhancing
the dramatic feel. This is also parodying most films with a wide
screen look. This effect then breaks a few times with both film. For
example in my film the scene reveals that the protagonist is pulling
terrible stunts which breaks the drama getting rid of the black bars
and filter. In “urgent its very similar however instead of doing
terrible stunts, the protagonist stops to take a breather. This adds
to the comedy to mock actual action films that have supernatural
characters. This is also relatable showing the reality of the
scenario.
9. Weaknesses
There are many weaknesses included in my project which I heavily regret. For example the most obvious mistakes
are the continuity errors. This happens mostly with the clothing such as my gloves appearing during the wood
segment. Due to having doing the woods segment in a different day to the others meant that I totally forgot that I
wore gloves. This also happened with another shot however with it being a bag. I only noticed this error as I were
looking through each shot at the end of the day meaning I hadn’t had the chance to reshoot. To improve on this I
would defiantly list what wear and make sure that I check the shots so that I can easily reshoot mistakes. Another
distracting mistake is the terrible focusing on some shots. Like for example the shots that have been taken at
home. I think the cause of this was the fact that I was shooting this alone and I couldn’t exactly see what the shots
looked like while acting. To improve I will find someone who is experienced and is well cooperative to shoot my
shots for me.
Strength
I would say there are some strength to my project from the filming to the editing like the choice of shots that have
used in order to make this visually pleasing. For example in the intro when I wake up the shots with the extreme
close up shows the panic and stress in my face while the fast cuts and the alarm creates a very uncomfortable
scene reflecting the character. Shots such as the track shots emphasises the rush of the scene making a thrilling
scenario. The transition I use supports the rush and continuity reflecting the characters determination. I have also
used music to emphasise this rush. For example whenever the character stops running I stop the music or quieten
it. I especially did this when the character arrives to his destination I left one track running which creates a sort of
low key suspense to see if he arrived on time. I also did this when it revealed that the character isn’t doing any
major stunts removing all the drama.
10. My project doesn’t have anything that includes any violence nor any harsh words making my project very child friendly
however the plot is more related to teenagers as it’s about being late for college. The concept can even be related to
adults as the same issue can be for work. I think that I appealed to more of an age range for at least 10-30 year olds as
the concept can be quite funny for these ages. I don’t think my film is gender specific as the plot and comedy can relate to
both. The only thing that may push this to one gender is the protagonist as he is a male. This could prevent females to
enjoy watching my film however my film doesn’t have any male related issues. My film isn’t for any specific social grade as
I want to target all the social grades. My project is most likely for the psychographic for emulators as it includes a feel of
achievement but not to attract the opposite sex.
I think I have may lived up to my questionnaire in some ways like the results for the question “what do you expect
best from in a short film”. For example I gave them an option of acting, plot or cinematography. Most of my audience
answered “cinematography” which I best achieved out of the other two options. Another question which I think I
lived up to was “what comedy do you most enjoy and why”. I collected answers such as “scary movie 3”, “kick ass”
and “spy”. These type of movies are parodies which make fun of popular movie clichés creating a relatable comedy. I
think I somewhat achieved this with the exaggerated editing and music. Many that answered were very young and
chose “16-20” for their age. My film followed an 18 year old character rushing for college which I think are most
relatable for those ages. Most also answered male as there gender which I have mostly achieved with only casting a
male cast however I didn’t reference any male attributes. One result I think I didn’t live up to was the question
“who is your favourite director” which most answered with “Christopher Nolan”. My film was nothing like any of
Nolan’s films as his films are quite serious with complicated plots.
12. What did you like about the product?
What I liked about this film were mainly the use of camera angles
that you used to place emphasis on the character and his current
situation. This goes hand in hand with a great performance that
really shows the audience what the character is feeling at that
moment. You made a pretty good music piece to go with it and the
plot twist at the end was pretty good as well
What improvements could have been made to the product?
My only really major issue with the piece is the continuity errors
that were made as they are pretty obvious with the disappearing
bag and gloves and this really brings me and possibly the audience
out of the experience which can ruin the short film and is perhaps
it’s greatest flaw.
13. What did you like about the product?
I like the concept of the short film and how it ends, i like the way
the music fits in with it. The medium shots that are used
throughout.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think you should improve on the bag going missing and then
gloves appearing giving more continuity.
14. What did you like about the product?
I mostly liked the various types of shot you used and how well it
came together with good performance creating fun visual
entertainment.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think you should next time reshoot many of your shots that have
mistakes which stick out like say thumb. This includes the
continuity errors such as the bag appearing and the gloves
appearing. Some shots are also out of focus.
15. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I definitely agree with my peers as they point out mistakes which I
myself see and wish to return and improve. I especially agree with
the points about the continuity issues such as my bag appearing
which is quite a big mistake taking the immersion away.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I would most definitely would disagree in that the fact that
feedback 1 and 2 like the music I have created. I think this because
the music sounded quite choppy at points as I have tried to edit it
to suit the footage which initially made the music not flow well.
16. All three of the feedback I received was mostly about the continuity errors
with both my bag and gloves appearing which I have commented on. This
means I will have to organise my planning much better creating timetables
and a list of what I’m wearing so that I don’t forget what I wore in my last
shot. Making a timetable would most definitely would help me with
knowing when to shoot so that it leaves me time to reshoot any mistakes. I
will also choose my peers smartly as many of my peers did not turn up on
time making me have to shoot myself which caused the focusing errors
which feedback 3 pointed out.
