7. Mood board – Character Posters
The reason I have added these to my mood board is because it’s these character posters that have inspired me to do something something similar to this. The
best thing about these character posters is how they connect with there being a letter to each poster, for it to spell out the title. This means if a someone from
the audience came across just one of these posters then he/she would be interested to see the rest, as they are just teaser posters with them just giving the letter
and a singular image. I believe this boosts the curiosity of the public to know what the other other posters will look like, with them knowing there will be
more; the evidence of it being too simple and just having one letter. The other ideas I believe to be brilliant in these posters are the identity of the characters
and the tag lines - the release date, a slogan, and movie website being represented across the different posters. I think this effective as a teaser poster. It’s
giving out clues of the film in each poster which encourages the viewer to want to find out more about the film. I also think that the poster idea is simple, one
character, one letter, one tagline, and yet they all connect through the colours of the imagery, the font of the letters and the simple one line tag.
8. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
The font of the titles all have use a combination of the colours red and white, black and white, and red and black, showing repetition. This is
because these are colours often based upon dark connotations, with red symbolising blood, black being a dark colour and white an innocent
simplest colour. What also is recurring from these posters is that whilst they display both genres of comedy and horror, they keep the horror
theme by adding a grey “grungy” layer to add the murkiness to the overall appearance. Along with this there is also a repetition of the
photograph colours green and white, with some of my photos being set in a forest however I muted these tones so that rather than being bright
and vibrant, the forest can be interpreted as creepy. With my character posters there is a repetition of the colour being used, with the character
posters it is most important that they are all represented in same style and colour. The colour scheme of these SAW posters have aimed at red
and black colours, showing its uses of dark theme. Along with this, the SAW franchise has always maintained its theme colour of using dark
orange which isn’t only just in the posters of the film, but in the film itself using an orange filter to some scenes.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
My mood board will influence my final product in many ways in terms of there being a mix between the light and the dark colours, as its set
upon two very different genres. I'm fixating upon red and black because I think they are two dark colours that compliment each other and are
really well when placed upon a horror movie poster. Black and white however are not the colours I want to use as I think any light colours will
not work with the poster, unless they have some relation to the film like “Get Out”. However I have already figured out what my plot and
theme will be, and has no relation to the colour black and white. For my main poster I'm thinking about doing something similar to the
Halloween (2018) poster where, if you turn the brightness up on the image of the poster then you can see something that you can’t see in the
dark. For my character poster I want them to be similar to The Purge Election with them having full head shots. On the second slide there are
three posters known as character posters because they have just one character per poster. I want to include this as one part of my project as I
love how they have put one letter per poster which teases the observer and slowly introduces the characters. Once all the posters have been
viewed the public understand the full name and theme of the film.
I was pleased with the effects of the photographs I used in the mood board as I think these developed well in the filming process.
In conclusion I found the mood boards really helpfulness gathering thoughts and ideas together. It also helped me keep a focused approach to
my project as I feel sometimes my ideas can develop too quickly and focus needs to be pulled back to the original idea whilst still exploring
new avenues.
9. Informal Proposal
Current Idea
Concept My film will be a comedy/horror genre film. The concept of this film will be about a person called George who is doing a media project on a film about Jigsaw. He is a vlogger.
Suddenly plans change when he ends up being haunted by a ghostly nun who walked the streets of a Staffordshire village. This is a well know Urban Legend of the village that the
nun walks between the priories of Whiteladies Convent (a ruin where the nuns wore white habits) and Blackladies Convent (now a private house, and where the nuns wore black).
The two horrors collide as George, and his friend Sam who is the cameraman, have to prevent the Nun and a Billy The Puppet, their doll that has come to life, ever from meeting.
The third person narrative adds to the realism of the situation and therefore adds to the thrill that this situation could happen to any teenager involved in social media.
Type of products
you would make
• X4 Character posters - The reason I have included four character posters, links back to the SAW posters that I referenced in my mood board. I think that it is a brilliant
concept as it engages the audience to look out for the film and creates a sense of wanting to find out more about it.
• X1 Main poster – The next product I have included is my main movie poster. I have included this as it beings all the ideas of the character posters together and summarises
the overall theme of the film.
• DVD cover - The reason why I chose a DVD cover as one of my products is because it was an original idea and is part of the whole package of presenting the film ie the
trailer, the posters, and the DVD cover itself. I feel that it encompasses the package of creative media when looking at one project.
• Trailer – The reason I chose a trailer is it gives overall taste of the film and its theme. It also shows my skills in editing using Movavi, and I feel my skills and confidence in
using this package have improved during this project.
What you will
need to make
them
• Adobe Photoshop – I will need Adobe Photoshop as I will have to Photoshop my main movie poster, character posters, DVD cover and my title cards for my trailer. This
software is essential for my project and is really easy to operate how to use the layers and the features of the software.
• Mobile ‘Phone – I will need my ‘phone because there are shots in my trailer where I am on my phone due to being a vlogger.
• Computer – Like Photoshop, the computer is essential to my project, as it’s what I’ll need to edit my work, research on the internet and communicate to the audience. I will
use my computer at home and the college’s computers.
• Gmail - Along with using a computer I will use Gmail which will help me send finished parts of my project to my lecturers and communicate with other people.
• Camera – In my project I will use a camera to film the trailer This is a Canon 700D DSL camera. I will also use the camera and studio at college as there is professional
lighting and backdrops.
• Jigsaw doll – I will need the Jigsaw doll, Billy The Puppet as he will feature in my posters and the DVD cover. I think will work as I am not using existing images.
• Scary Nun costume – I will need this scary nun costume as it will feature in all my products and will order it off amazon. It will be scary and effective to use new shots of
the nun rather than old shots.
• Movavi – I will use this software to edit my trailer as I find it easier to use than Adobe Premier Pro and has a simple user face but has a technical features which I am
experienced and more confident in using
Audience For my audience I will be aiming at a target audience of (16-36), despite the film being rated an 18, because that is the generally demographic age of when people watch these types
of films. This film will also be more focused on the male audience, which also sound very categorical with a lot of people loving comedy films, but there are references from horror
films that people won’t understand unless they have watched horror films and with it usually being the male audience that watch horror movies its more aimed to them.
Psychographically this movie belongs to the “Belonger” catagory with there being a few films that have already been made similar to this and it is also tackling two well known
genres. The Belonger tends to stay loyal to their viewing preference. I also think that this goes to a type A audience with them making fun of stereotypical horror scenarios and with
the audience understanding that which adds to its comedy element.
10. Choices
Discounted ideas Reasons for not choosing this project
• Video game
• 2D game: TRI-Phobia
• I don’t want to do a video game because I don't think it would get me
many marks if it was a 2D game. Plus even if it wasn’t a 2D game it would
be covering loads of time management and would need a big budget for
certain equipment. Also even though I would be very passionate to do a
video game I don’t think I would have the right skill requirement having
struggled with it in the past. Even though I am capable of creating a poster
on Adobe Photoshop, I struggle with the timeline on Adobe Photoshop
and the whole design of creating a video game on a transparent page on
Photoshop. I would also find it difficult to ask my peers for advice on this
as they are also in the same situation as me, finding it challenging.
• I also feel that from an interest point of view, the ideas behind my theme
for the film, creating posters and a trailer will develop my creativity and
interest to learn more about the packages I will use.
• Music video
• Lip sync: Not Afraid by Eminem
• The reason I have not chosen to do a lip sync for my final major project is
because if I was to do it, it would have to be very accurate with Eminem
being a very fast rapper and I feel it would be difficult to lip sync one of
his songs. If I were to lip sync to a different song I would find it difficult to
be in front of camera in a very expressive way for a large amount of time
and remembering the words plus having this confidence. I am also
discounting this idea because there are not that many people that feel
comfortable acting in the lip sync music video because they will be in a
public area and won’t feel comfortable in front of a camera. I would also
find it difficult to find a good location, for it to be eye catching enough to
be a music video.
