Here are the potential constraints that may affect or limit your production:
Time - Tight schedule to film on weekends when crew is available. Weather dependent shots may be impacted by time of year.
Personnel - Limited availability of actors and crew due to full-time jobs. Small crew size could limit what can be filmed.
Cost - Budget limitations on equipment rentals for weekends. Cost of rescheduling if weather impacts planned shoots.
Technical - Weather conditions like snow may impact outdoor shots or equipment functionality. Backup equipment options are limited.
Location - Outdoor locations are dependent on suitable weather. Limited indoor backup locations if weather prevents planned shoots.
Organizational - Coordinating actor and crew schedules on weekends
2. The target audience for the film is 16-24 year olds which makes my research extremely useful as this is the
majority of the demographic who answered my survey. I conducted my research using SurveyMonkey and
distributed the survey to students on my course who are perfectly in the age range of what my target audience is.
My research proved successful as it provided me with useful information about the demographic and the trends
and opinions the film industry. From a sample group of twenty-two 16-25 year olds, 60% were male and 40%
were female. I found that most of the target audience watch 1-3 times a week with a third of the votes on each,
whilst another 20% said that they watched 7 movies a week. This influx could be due to the accessibility that
comes with paid streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime which are fairly cheap and hold a larger
library of films to binge watch.
3. Comedy was shown to be the most popular genre amongst the target audience followed by Sci-Fi/Fantasy and
then Action/Adventure. This contradicts generals statistics which show Action/Adventure as the most popular.
95% of the sample group had seen short films online and 64% felt that a soundtrack is always necessary in any
film. The last question I added to help me with my own story line as most short films have cliffhangers at then
end which, my survey showed, most people do not enjoy. However due to the short length of my film I would still
like to include a cliffhanger at the end of my film as it is staple of the genre I am doing.
4. Last year’s box office
showed that 9 of the top 10
best selling films of that year
were either sequels or
reboots. This could show that
audiences look for familiarity
and reliability in films that’s
franchise predecessors were
also successful. Most of the
films are also aimed at
children which could show
that younger people are
more likely to go to the
cinema either with their
parents or with friends. A
considerable amount of the
films also fall into the fantasy
or action/adventure genre
which could show that movie
goers enjoy big scale visual
effects and worlds which
allow them to escape reality.
The all time gross reflects a similar trend
to that of this year. Most of the films in the
top 10 required a high level of visual
effects and CGI which suggests that my
point about visual effects and escapism is
true as most films take place in a semi
realistic world or a complete fantasy
world. Most of the films were made in the
last 10 years which could suggest that the
cinema is more affordable for moviegoers
and that the industry has grown hugely
both in production value and technological
advancement which in turn grosses more
money.
Overall the main themes which sell best at
the box office are the one that allow
escapism for the viewer which usually is
backed up by either franchise or a large
production quality
5. For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this
you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target.
For this you could also produce an audience profile.
My audience research proved to be very useful to discover trends and opinions of my
target demographic. I found my primary research to be more productive due to the
specificity of the research which allowed me to look directly at my target audience
when conducting my survey. My findings included the most popular genre and briefly
touched on the popularity of short films online which I did not find from my secondary
research. Overall my target audience is 16-25 year olds who frequently use the
social media to view content as this is where most short films are viewed and
promoted. The social grade of the audience doesn’t matter as the film will be
accessible to everyone however the age range has been bound to reflect the target
tastes of young adults from my survey. A socially conscious psychographic would
probably relate to my film more as I plan to feature many psychological motifs that
conscious people are more likely to pick up on. The film may feature a different world
other than our own which relates to the gratification of entertainment.
6. Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC
might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and
what you are allowed to include.
The age rating that I would put my film in would be
12. This is because of the moderate psychological
and physical threat that is present in on the
character and the brief violence that I would like to
use. This is suitable for my target audience and is a
safe way to rate the film as it is not too strict on what
I can do however I know that I will not be including
anything too graphic in the film. I would have
suggested a 15 hover when overlooking the BBFC
criteria I discovered that the 15 rating usually
incudes graphic violence which I would not include in
my film.
7. Research potential production techniques you might want to use
or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also
ask potential target audience what they think.
You will need to add extra slides!
With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely

The ‘Whip Pan’ effect that is used in Hot
Fuzz by Edgar Wright is something I
would like to experiment with when
producing my film as this effect sets a
good pace for an action based film.
Although this does not necessarily
mean this effect will be suitable for my
project, I would like to try this out to gain
some skills and knowledge which will
help me progress in future projects.
I would like to use this technique for a
transition between scenes of a with a
train passing being pan.

The dolly zoom used in Mad Max: Fury
Road is used to set the pace and show
the speed of the cars and the atmosphere
of the chase scene. This technique was
pioneered by the film Jaws in 1975 and
has been used frequently in many popular
films since. I feel this would not fit the
theme of my film as I find this technique a
bit cheesy and cliché so it may take away
from the serious sinister nature of my
piece.
10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdSdOdlyoO0
This is a technique that I would like
to use in my project. Through
Premiere Pro and After Effects I
would like to draw sketchy crosses
over the antagonists eyes to
dehumanise him from the
Protagonist who will just be a
normal person. I found this
technique on a tutorial on YouTube
and discovered that it is fairly easy
to pull off. This will be completed in
the editing process towards then
end of the project however I would
like to experiment with the technique
before putting it into practice to see
how effective and executable the
effect is.
12. Discuss the tools and
processes used in your
experiments – use
screenshots to
illustrate your process
During filming my experiment, I found it very useful to play
around with the camera and different shot types whilst filming.
In hindsight, this was not very helpful when I had a specific
time frame however I believe it helped me a lot when it came
to the physical use of the camera. For example, I tried the
same shot 3 or 4 times from different angles to compare the
differences and to evaluate which one would be more
successful. This not only gave me good spacial awareness of
the scene, it also allowed me to view the project from different
angles to show different moods and motifs such as status and
inferiority.
13. What elements of your
experiments will you
include in your final
product?
My experiments did prove to be very useful when it came to
shot types. I will take forward the knowledge of conducting
more than one shot type for each scene to ensure that I am
able to conduct and evaluate many different shots before
deciding which will make the final cut. I believe that my
experiments have also taught me a bit more about correct us of
equipment such as a tripod, audio recorder and the camera its
self when producing high quality content.
14. The editing is something that I previously had experience in from
completing other projects on this course and Premiere Pro is a fairly
simple concept to grasp so I had no problem. I chose the best shots
from the various shots of each scene and chopped them together using
Premiere Pro. I also looked at various YouTube tutorials to produce
different video effects when editing. Through doing my experiments and
tests, I believe I have developed the skills to find what works and what
does not when editing a film together and believe that this project will
further those skills and make this project successful.
15. Due to my past experience of Premiere Pro, my experiments were more of
a refresher course rather than a lesson. I did find it useful to readjust myself
to the software (Premiere Pro) and to discuss with my peers what did and
didn’t work in editing. I will take the skills I have developed through my
experiments forward through this project and hope to develop them through
watching various online tutorials industry techniques.
16. My audio experiment, I believe, was
fairly successful. The most difficult
part was replicating specific sounds
that I was unable to find naturally.
Also trying to avoid background noise
such as cars or people going past
was very difficult in the college
environment. This was extremely
helpful to me as I had not
experimented with any foley sound
previously. I am confident using the
sound recorder and editing and
mixing the background ambience
with sound effects.
17. My audio experiments showed me the importance of diegetic
and non-diegetic sound when creating a film. The struggles I
have found are locating or replicating specific sounds naturally
however a back up to this is to source royalty free sounds that I
can use if I cant locate them. I am happy that I conducted this
audio experiment before going head first into my main project as
it gave me a chance to learn the most productive ways of
recording audio and the strengths and limitations of it also.
18. List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you
should consider issues from each of these categories:
Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
Time and Personnel are two factors which may provide constraints to my
production. This is due to the scheduling of the actors and crew that I have involved
in my production as my crew both have full time jobs. This will be manageable if
filming on the weekends which means I will have an organisational constraint of
booking kit for the appropriate weekends. Weather will also be a constraint as I plan
to film on the coming weekend when it is snowing however this may be unreliable
due to the weather fluctuation of the area and the reliability of weather reports
