Working Title:
At this early stage in production I don’t yet have a title for my short film. Once my film has been
more planned out and I know more about what it will be and how the final product will look I will
start to brainstorm ideas for a title.
Audience:
Who is your audience? My audience is aimed at people age 15 and up as those are the type of
people that are likely to watch horror films or films of that genre. I think if it was any younger and
the genre would have to be different as parents tend to control what there children watch until a
certain age were they are old and mature enough to cope with more mature tones. In terms of
gender my film isn’t geared to any specific one. I think in this day and age you can’t gear
something to a specific gender, as it would inevitably offend certain groups of people that perhaps
identify with the opposite gender. It is very easy for over the top feminists to accuse you of being
sexist or doing something wrong if you gear something to a specific gender so to be safe I would
say that my short film Is geared towards anyone who would want to watch it. In terms of the social
status, I believe films as a general form of entertainment appeals to all social classes, as it is a
form of escapism that is generally accessible to all people in this day and age with mediums such
as the internet. Perhaps maybe it would be slightly less accessible to those of a lower class with
lower incomes as if it was a real film that had to be purchased or rented maybe affording it would
be an issue for them. I think it would certainly appeal to someone that is of the intended age range
and to someone that would enjoy horror films compared to someone who wouldn’t because
perhaps it would give them nightmares. Another group of people that it would appeal to is those
that connect through digital media online platforms such as YouTube as that is were it would be
released on.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
In terms of my progress throughout the year so far I believe I have acquired and refined some
skills in using adobe software such as premier, after effects and Photoshop. I have also learnt a lot
about gathering different types of research both primary and secondary sources, as well as
creating surveys for people to answer on survey monkey as well as using websites such as
You.Gov.Profiles to collect data on the different types of people that would use a specific product
or watch a specific film. This was very useful when we were doing our Irn-Bru Project, as we
needed to audience research to determine how to make our advert appeal to all ages in order to
convince them to purchase the product. These research techniques were easily applied to this
video project, as it was necessary to research into audiences that tend to watch films of the genre
a picked in this case, horror/thriller. Doing this research will have a direct impact on my project in a
positive way as it will allow me to tailor the tone and content to the age range of the intended
audience to create a good piece of entertainment that someone that age would actually want to
watch. I also want to be able to evoke the emotional reaction of fear in the audience like horror
films are supposed to. To do this I will have to use my skills and knowledge I acquired when
making that short horror film we made to practice editing with Premier in preparation for editing our
Irn-Bru advert. I learnt a lot about editing with this software mainly how to use it but I already knew
about editing techniques in general as I used Sony Vegas at home for my own projects. When we
were editing this horror film I wanted to add some sort of energy effect over the key to indicate it
was possessed. To do this I found an appropriate visual effect on YouTube overlaid onto a green
background making it easy to insert on to my video using Chroma keying. This was something I
had experimented on before at home but something I needed to refine my skills for when we did
our final advert which was all going to be filmed on a green screen.

Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
In terms of the concept for my actual project I tend to use the time I have this weekend to plan it
out more in order to have a strong idea of what I want to do. To start of I knew what I wanted to do
but I didn’t have a strong idea of how I want it to pan out. This is way I am determined this
weekend to write down my ideas to turn it into something that Is actually good and worth watching.
I had an idea to have a group of people that get trapped into a room and being picked of one by
one by some creature in the dark. However I know that it needs to have more of a story and a plot
as it won’t be very good if it just that. I then thought the idea that this person was receiving these
very unsettling texts from an unknown number that knows really personal things about this person
and is leading them to this location under a bridge were they are chased by some creature around
into different rooms of the college and eventually into a room full of dead bodies the person then
looks around realises the door has locked-“that wasn’t supposed to happen” before he is killed by
some unseen creature-closing credits. To make this I will be using one or two green screen assets
of YouTube however the rest of the effect will be done by myself using either premier of AE. In
terms of incorporating the watch into the film I decided to use my watches stopwatch to have it
counting down until the characters death, to do this In every shot were he looks at his watch I will
have him hold it still in front of the camera and reverse the clip so it looks like the watch is actually
counting backwards. Towards the end of the film I will have the counter reach zero just before he
dies.
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
What research will you need to conduct and how will it help you make your project/
Production Techniques (approx. 150 words)
In terms of specialist techniques I may have to use green screen to achieve the effect of his watch
counting backwards because it will be hard to get it correct in different locations whilst filming live.
So in order to do this I think I may be better of the watch on the actors arm on the green screen
and overlaying onto the footage we filmed in almost a first person perspective way then reverse
the clip so the stopwatch counting down is one clip just overlaid onto different background clips. I
will also be using a tripod to have a steadicam shots in some places however in the fast pace
scenes were the character is running I will have the camera be all shaky as if the camera man is
also running away from something or perhaps I could edit it so it looks like the camera is the
creatures view chasing the character. In terms of postproduction we will be using a mixture of
Premier Pro, After effect and perhaps garage band (for music) to create our edit our film and
create the final product. We will be using the software on the college’s iMac 2013 computers,
which are more then powerful enough to utilize this software. In terms of the hardware we have to
use with these computers we will only need to be using a mouse and keyboard and no specific
addons for the computer such as a graphics tablet or a trackball. We will also want to use a decent
pair of earphones/headphones as that will allow us to hear the audio clearly and edit it to add or
remove background sounds and to produce a piece of work that is audibly appealing as well as
visually appealing.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
I plan on evaluating my work by looking at its strengths and weaknesses as well as comparing it to
other perhaps more professional works. I could also once people have seen the video ask them for
constructive criticism and show how I would act on their feedback if I were to do film and re edit it
again. This would allow me to produce a final piece of work that really has the audience in mind
with what they would like to see in a film such as mine which can go a long way to improving it and
increasing its audience success rate which at the end of the day is what a film producer would
want.
