STAGE 2
RESEARCH +
EXPERIMENTS
Jack Morton
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From looking at my results I have found out that the majority of my audience have
used close up and medium shots the most.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From my results I have found out that my audience does find horror and comedy
over the top and say its “too dramatic”. I do agree with my audience as I do think that
its silly and over the top.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From my results I have found out that my audience likes comedy and horror. From
this information I now know what genres the audience likes, however I do not like
this genre and will be making a thriller and adventure short film.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From my analysis I now know what that a film about bad luck will be interesting to
the majority of the audience as they voted for it and said “sounds interesting”.
Therefore I will carry this idea into my mind when making my final product.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From my analysis I have found that every one who has done my survey
is male, therefore to target this market I will add in more action and
genres that target males.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
I asked my audience to see if they wanted the short film to be set in the forest
or a field. From my research I have found out it’s equal in answers, therefore I
will choose on where the location will be filmed as I feel that field will create a
good atmosphere.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From my results I have found out that my audience has decided that the most
important technique is close up and my audience has said “you can get reactions and
extra detail”.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
My analysis for this question is that the audience identifies with the weak
character. My thoughts on this are that I wont be targeting this part of the audience
as I don’t think it will be suitable for my short film.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From the results I have gathered I have found out that the audience would
like to see a thriller and a adventure short film. My thoughts on this are that
I would like to do this genre for my short film.
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
From analyzing the results, I have found out that the audience does enjoy
watching short films, which is great as I will be making a short film for this
target market.
 Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info.
Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience
Time lapse film Justice league
 For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this you
should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target. For this
you could also produce an audience profile.
 From analysing my primary and secondary research I have found my target audience.
When looking at my primary research I found that all people who took my survey were
male. Therefore to target the male audience I will try to add in more action and dramatic
scenes. I also realized that my audience like the genres comedy and horror, however I
will not be targeting this type of audience as I think horror and comedy is over the top
and down right unfunny. Instead I will be making a adventure, thriller type of short film.
Another analysis I have found researching through primary and secondary research is
that, they would enjoy a short film about bad luck, which I think is great as I wanted to
do this idea. My audience was unsure where they wanted the location to be set as I
couldn’t find a clear indicator, therefore I will be choosing the area, which will be
abounded field, therefore It can create dramatic tension as empty fields are terrifying
according to secondary research. My audience identifies with a weak character,
however I wont be able to target this type of audience as the short film I'm making is
about a strong character. Finally my audience would be interested in seeing a
adventure, thriller short film. I'm quite pleased with my research as I have found ways to
target my audience and come up with new/better ways to improve my short film.
 Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC
might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and
what you are allowed to include.
 I think that my short film will have a certificate of 12 years or over. The reason I
have made this decision is that there is no discrimination language or behaviour in
my short film. There is also no use/misuse of drugs that will be in my short film as
the short film I'm making is about an unlucky watch. There is going to be no
promotion of potentially dangerous behaviour which children are likely to copy and
no glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons such as knives. There
will also be no endorsement of anti social behaviour. There will be no bad
language in my short film as the only dialogue I can say is “ That wasn’t supposed
to happen”. There will be no nudity in the short film I'm making. There will be one
horror sequence that may be disturbing, however the tone will not be. Finally there
wont be any violence of any kind in the short film I'm going to make.
 Research potential production techniques you might want to use
or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
 You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
 You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also
ask potential target audience what they think.
 You will need to add extra slides!
 With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
 They style of the film is magnificent as your
excited around every corner of the film waiting
with suspense. The way I will incorporate this
into my film is by building suspense throughout
the short film, by using the technique called
“the rule of three”. This is when you want to
show the audience a reoccurrence of a similar
scene. You don’t want to over do the technique
as it will become boring and predicable. The
way the sound is done is brilliant as it builds
tension, for example in the film you hear the
haunting time machine sound which screeches
ears, as you don’t know what's about to
happen. The lighting in the film is amazing
because you can see every thing clear as day.
I will try to add this in to my short film by
copying the camera shots to get the best angle
for lighting as this would make my film clear
and understandable.

When watching this film I noticed it had
excellent and smooth camera shots between
each scene. I will try to incorporate this into my
short film by copying the camera shots for
example they used a lot of lower shots to show
the power of a specific character in the film. I
will add this where a dangerous and powerful
creature appears to tell the audience how
terrifying he/she is. I then noticed it had
amazing transitions between each scene, which
made it fresh and new to the eye. I will copy this
technique and add it in to my short film by
adding effects from premiere pro from the effect
section. This would intern make the short film
smoother as the transitions would ease the
audience into the next scene.
The style of this film is appealing to my target audience
as it has retro feel to it. Therefore targeting younger
audiences who like retro sort of games. I wont add this
style into my short film as the main focus of my short
film is dramatic atmosphere and tension, because retro
doesn’t really bring out dramatic atmosphere. I then
noticed it had amazing transitions between each scene,
which made it fresh and new to the eye. I will copy this
technique and add it in to my short film by adding effects
from premiere pro from the effect section. This would
intern make the short film smoother as the transitions
would ease the audience into the next scene. The
lighting in the film is amazing because you can see
every thing clear as day. I will try to add this in to my
short film by copying the camera shots to get the best
angle for lighting as this would make my film clear and
understandable.

EXPERIMENTS
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
Be prepared to add extra slides
In making the film experiments the tools I used are the
razor tool to cut out video/audio clips that had background
noise or someone in shot. My thoughts on using this tool
were that it made it difficult to select the audio clips and
crop them, therefore this tool was a bit fiddly. I then used
the drag tool to get to the other end of the video clip and
edit my video. However this tool is annoying as you always
have to switch to it when you want to edit. I then used the
mouse tool which helped me move around my audio clips
and video clips. Therefore this tool was useful and saved
time, as there were no tools similar to the mouse tool.
Another tool I used was the magnifying glass tool which
helped me zoom in on specific clips that I either wanted to
crop or add an effect.
I started by planning out the camera shots we were going to
do for our filming experiment, after that we went out around
college and started with a establishing shot which lets the
viewer know where the film is going to take place. We then
found a corridor to film in, I then set up the camera and
started to film two people in our group having a
convocation. Another person in our group needs urgent
help, so he sprints around the corner and hits the two
students talking. They all fall on the ground with a slow-
motion effect, the student says I need help, the other two
students follow him. They then find a girl on the stairs
unconscious and the two students ask “what happened”. I
then got the SD card from the camera and slotted it onto
the mac and put it all together on premiere pro.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
I will include a plan as it worked well for me in the experiments as I
knew what it had to film and what type of shot to do it in. I will also
include a establishing shot to let the viewer/audience know where the
film is going to be set in. There are disadvantages for example there is
not enough time given to create the film experiment as we were only
given one camera and 1 hour to finish filming. Reflecting back the
positives of filming in a big group is that you can expand more on the
story as you could add extra character into the mix. Another con to
filming is that the area/location is plain and boring and doesn’t justify
the film experiments. I will use the tri pod more as it gives the film a
smooth and polished look. I will also use different types of camera
shots as they fit well together and show the viewer a well laid out story.

tool I used was the fade tool which made the audio
fade out and made the short film smooth and elegant
when ending.

I first started by collecting sounds around college
using a microphone that would appear in the video
clip I was given. I then gathered the audio of the
microphone recorder and slot the SD card into the
mac. I then got the audio clips and opened
premiere pro, I put the audio clips where the sound
queues are. I then had to duplicate the some audio
as I didn’t have enough walking sound effects. I
then tweaked some sound and added background
noise as silence sounded weird. I then exported it
and added it to blogger.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
 I will include a shot of the landscape to let the audience know where
the short film is going to take place, I will use the extreme long shot to
do this as it shows an exterior view of the area the short film is going
to take place. I will also change the way I mange my time as I spent
more time as I should collecting the videos than editing the videos
together. I will also use the same cinematography for example the
visual aspects of the film language and the camera shots. I will also
use movement as it gives me a clear indicator of emotion, motive and
gives the audience clues for example foreshadowing future events
that may happen. I will also use the technique called “the rule of
three”. This is when you want to show the audience a reoccurrence of
a similar scene. You don’t want to over do the technique as it will
become boring and predicable.
 List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you should consider issues from
each of these categories:
 Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
 The time will be a big factor in making my short film as everything will need a schedule for example when I
need to book the equipment, what day I'm filming, when to edit the footage and when to add in effects.
Therefore I will need to have a strict plan to follow in the days leading up to filing the short film.
 Another major problem is personnel as I don’t have many people helping me film the short film, therefore I will
have to book the equipment for a bit more extra time to counter this issue.
 The cost I will be an issue as I have to find the props and designs of the character and purchase them.
Therefore to solve this problem I will purchase these items at a cheap shop across the street from my house
and split the cost evenly across each student who I'm working with.
 The technical side might limit my product as the equipment I need might be fully booked and I might have to
wait for a later date for the equipment to be available to me. Another problem would be the camera battery
dies which will cause the making of the short film come to a haut.
 The location might be an issue depending on the weather as the location I want to film could be flooded or
damaged. Another issue would be people as I want to film an empty field which would make the short film
have atmosphere and tension but could be ruined if the field is occupied.
 If I don’t organise the production of the short film it could end up in chaos, which would result in a terrible short
film. Therefore to get around this issue I will schedule the plan of action and know what I will be doing on
certain days.

2. research sf 2017

  • 2.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From looking at my results I have found out that the majority of my audience have used close up and medium shots the most.
  • 3.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From my results I have found out that my audience does find horror and comedy over the top and say its “too dramatic”. I do agree with my audience as I do think that its silly and over the top.
  • 4.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From my results I have found out that my audience likes comedy and horror. From this information I now know what genres the audience likes, however I do not like this genre and will be making a thriller and adventure short film.
  • 5.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From my analysis I now know what that a film about bad luck will be interesting to the majority of the audience as they voted for it and said “sounds interesting”. Therefore I will carry this idea into my mind when making my final product.
  • 6.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From my analysis I have found that every one who has done my survey is male, therefore to target this market I will add in more action and genres that target males.
  • 7.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate I asked my audience to see if they wanted the short film to be set in the forest or a field. From my research I have found out it’s equal in answers, therefore I will choose on where the location will be filmed as I feel that field will create a good atmosphere.
  • 8.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From my results I have found out that my audience has decided that the most important technique is close up and my audience has said “you can get reactions and extra detail”.
  • 9.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate My analysis for this question is that the audience identifies with the weak character. My thoughts on this are that I wont be targeting this part of the audience as I don’t think it will be suitable for my short film.
  • 10.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From the results I have gathered I have found out that the audience would like to see a thriller and a adventure short film. My thoughts on this are that I would like to do this genre for my short film.
  • 11.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate From analyzing the results, I have found out that the audience does enjoy watching short films, which is great as I will be making a short film for this target market.
  • 12.  Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info. Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience Time lapse film Justice league
  • 13.  For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target. For this you could also produce an audience profile.  From analysing my primary and secondary research I have found my target audience. When looking at my primary research I found that all people who took my survey were male. Therefore to target the male audience I will try to add in more action and dramatic scenes. I also realized that my audience like the genres comedy and horror, however I will not be targeting this type of audience as I think horror and comedy is over the top and down right unfunny. Instead I will be making a adventure, thriller type of short film. Another analysis I have found researching through primary and secondary research is that, they would enjoy a short film about bad luck, which I think is great as I wanted to do this idea. My audience was unsure where they wanted the location to be set as I couldn’t find a clear indicator, therefore I will be choosing the area, which will be abounded field, therefore It can create dramatic tension as empty fields are terrifying according to secondary research. My audience identifies with a weak character, however I wont be able to target this type of audience as the short film I'm making is about a strong character. Finally my audience would be interested in seeing a adventure, thriller short film. I'm quite pleased with my research as I have found ways to target my audience and come up with new/better ways to improve my short film.
  • 14.  Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and what you are allowed to include.  I think that my short film will have a certificate of 12 years or over. The reason I have made this decision is that there is no discrimination language or behaviour in my short film. There is also no use/misuse of drugs that will be in my short film as the short film I'm making is about an unlucky watch. There is going to be no promotion of potentially dangerous behaviour which children are likely to copy and no glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons such as knives. There will also be no endorsement of anti social behaviour. There will be no bad language in my short film as the only dialogue I can say is “ That wasn’t supposed to happen”. There will be no nudity in the short film I'm making. There will be one horror sequence that may be disturbing, however the tone will not be. Finally there wont be any violence of any kind in the short film I'm going to make.
  • 15.  Research potential production techniques you might want to use or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera, editing, story, sound, etc  You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.  You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask potential target audience what they think.  You will need to add extra slides!  With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it completely
  • 16.  They style of the film is magnificent as your excited around every corner of the film waiting with suspense. The way I will incorporate this into my film is by building suspense throughout the short film, by using the technique called “the rule of three”. This is when you want to show the audience a reoccurrence of a similar scene. You don’t want to over do the technique as it will become boring and predicable. The way the sound is done is brilliant as it builds tension, for example in the film you hear the haunting time machine sound which screeches ears, as you don’t know what's about to happen. The lighting in the film is amazing because you can see every thing clear as day. I will try to add this in to my short film by copying the camera shots to get the best angle for lighting as this would make my film clear and understandable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BzYpF24LpY
  • 17. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BzYpF 24LpY When watching this film I noticed it had excellent and smooth camera shots between each scene. I will try to incorporate this into my short film by copying the camera shots for example they used a lot of lower shots to show the power of a specific character in the film. I will add this where a dangerous and powerful creature appears to tell the audience how terrifying he/she is. I then noticed it had amazing transitions between each scene, which made it fresh and new to the eye. I will copy this technique and add it in to my short film by adding effects from premiere pro from the effect section. This would intern make the short film smoother as the transitions would ease the audience into the next scene.
  • 18. The style of this film is appealing to my target audience as it has retro feel to it. Therefore targeting younger audiences who like retro sort of games. I wont add this style into my short film as the main focus of my short film is dramatic atmosphere and tension, because retro doesn’t really bring out dramatic atmosphere. I then noticed it had amazing transitions between each scene, which made it fresh and new to the eye. I will copy this technique and add it in to my short film by adding effects from premiere pro from the effect section. This would intern make the short film smoother as the transitions would ease the audience into the next scene. The lighting in the film is amazing because you can see every thing clear as day. • 20. In making the film experiments the tools I used are the razor tool to cut out video/audio clips that had background noise or someone in shot. My thoughts on using this tool were that it made it difficult to select the audio clips and crop them, therefore this tool was a bit fiddly. I then used the drag tool to get to the other end of the video clip and edit my video. However this tool is annoying as you always have to switch to it when you want to edit. I then used the mouse tool which helped me move around my audio clips and video clips. Therefore this tool was useful and saved time, as there were no tools similar to the mouse tool. Another tool I used was the magnifying glass tool which helped me zoom in on specific clips that I either wanted to crop or add an effect. I started by planning out the camera shots we were going to do for our filming experiment, after that we went out around college and started with a establishing shot which lets the viewer know where the film is going to take place. We then found a corridor to film in, I then set up the camera and started to film two people in our group having a convocation. Another person in our group needs urgent help, so he sprints around the corner and hits the two students talking. They all fall on the ground with a slow- motion effect, the student says I need help, the other two students follow him. They then find a girl on the stairs unconscious and the two students ask “what happened”. I then got the SD card from the camera and slotted it onto the mac and put it all together on premiere pro.
  • 21.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product? I will include a plan as it worked well for me in the experiments as I knew what it had to film and what type of shot to do it in. I will also include a establishing shot to let the viewer/audience know where the film is going to be set in. There are disadvantages for example there is not enough time given to create the film experiment as we were only given one camera and 1 hour to finish filming. Reflecting back the positives of filming in a big group is that you can expand more on the story as you could add extra character into the mix. Another con to filming is that the area/location is plain and boring and doesn’t justify the film experiments. I will use the tri pod more as it gives the film a smooth and polished look. I will also use different types of camera shots as they fit well together and show the viewer a well laid out story.
  • 22. The tools I used are the mouse tool which helped me move around my audio clips and video clips. Therefore this tool was useful and saved time, as there were no tools similar to the mouse tool. I then used the razor tool to cut out video/audio clips that had background noise or someone in shot. Another tool I used was the magnifying glass tool which helped me zoom in on specific clips that I either wanted to crop or add an effect. Another tool I used was the fade tool which made the audio fade out and made the short film smooth and elegant when ending.

  • 25. The tools I used are the mouse tool which helped me move around my audio clips and video clips. Therefore this tool was useful and saved time, as there were no tools similar to the mouse tool. I then used the razor tool to cut out video/audio clips that had background noise or someone in shot. Another tool I used was the fade tool which made the audio fade out and made the short film smooth and elegant when ending. I first started by collecting sounds around college using a microphone that would appear in the video clip I was given. I then gathered the audio of the microphone recorder and slot the SD card into the mac. I then got the audio clips and opened premiere pro, I put the audio clips where the sound queues are. I then had to duplicate the some audio as I didn’t have enough walking sound effects. I then tweaked some sound and added background noise as silence sounded weird. I then exported it and added it to blogger.
  • 26.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  I will include a shot of the landscape to let the audience know where the short film is going to take place, I will use the extreme long shot to do this as it shows an exterior view of the area the short film is going to take place. I will also change the way I mange my time as I spent more time as I should collecting the videos than editing the videos together. I will also use the same cinematography for example the visual aspects of the film language and the camera shots. I will also use movement as it gives me a clear indicator of emotion, motive and gives the audience clues for example foreshadowing future events that may happen. I will also use the technique called “the rule of three”. This is when you want to show the audience a reoccurrence of a similar scene. You don’t want to over do the technique as it will become boring and predicable.
  • 27.  List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you should consider issues from each of these categories:  Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational  The time will be a big factor in making my short film as everything will need a schedule for example when I need to book the equipment, what day I'm filming, when to edit the footage and when to add in effects. Therefore I will need to have a strict plan to follow in the days leading up to filing the short film.  Another major problem is personnel as I don’t have many people helping me film the short film, therefore I will have to book the equipment for a bit more extra time to counter this issue.  The cost I will be an issue as I have to find the props and designs of the character and purchase them. Therefore to solve this problem I will purchase these items at a cheap shop across the street from my house and split the cost evenly across each student who I'm working with.  The technical side might limit my product as the equipment I need might be fully booked and I might have to wait for a later date for the equipment to be available to me. Another problem would be the camera battery dies which will cause the making of the short film come to a haut.  The location might be an issue depending on the weather as the location I want to film could be flooded or damaged. Another issue would be people as I want to film an empty field which would make the short film have atmosphere and tension but could be ruined if the field is occupied.  If I don’t organise the production of the short film it could end up in chaos, which would result in a terrible short film. Therefore to get around this issue I will schedule the plan of action and know what I will be doing on certain days.
