16. Academic History
Due to being home educated, I only have my English Language and Maths GCSE’s; to
which I passed both with high grades. I attendedYork College, doing my AS Levels which
included Media Studies, Film Studies and English Language.Towards the end of the year,
I decided I wasn’t going to continue my A Levels but instead do a Media Production BTEC
as I prefer the practical way of learning instead of doing exams as I feel I’m more creative
than I am academic; one reason I was home educated in the first place. Media is
something that has been in my family for years now, starting with my mum being in
recruitment, to moving to Spain and starting her own business designing a yellow pages
in English to moving on to designing a fashion magazine, then moving back to the UK and
restarting in recruitment with my brother. I feel if I go into the media industry, whether
that be music, social media orTV I feel I will have the experience to go into the creative
industry with a lot of knowledge already, especially now being aYouTuber I feel it has
expanded my knowledge on all forms of media production.
17. Current Study
Currently I’m studying media at a merit level, hoping to improve my grade before the end
of college. I feel this course is better than the A Level I did the previous year as that was
more exam based, even though there was a lot of practical working, I still felt there was
more exam work which isn’t something I see as my strong point as I enjoy getting out
there and doing work practically at my own pace.We used Photoshop a lot throughout
the year, a program I am used to using and have done for the past 2 years, same with
Premier when it came to editing videos. I have definitely expanded my knowledge with
both systems, Photoshop more so than Premier as I already knew all the editing
techniques through vlogging, but with Photoshop I learnt how to appropriately edit
images and cut the main part of the image I want from the original background then
adding it to my own. For my Final Project, I created a tour advert with posters and
merchandise to go with it. I feel the project I created isn’t necessarily to do with my
number one course, however it is music related which is the field of work I want to get
into in the foreseeable future.
18. The Future
In the future I would like to work within the music industry, whether that be managing a
band or behind the scenes of an event. It is something that has been of interest to me for
a few years now, plus it would be easy for me to get into the industry due to my mum
having contacts with people who are record producers or assistants for well known bands
who would be willing to take me on as an intern. I do have back up plans if that doesn’t
work out, including something within the film industry (something like a director or
producer), an actress on a popular soap or even make my part-timeYouTube career into a
full-time career. A final back up plan is something to do with social media, whether that
be marketing or promotions as I send a lot of my time on social media I feel it would be
good to learn how it all works behind the scenes of that and how fast something someone
says can blown out of proportion.
19. Outside College
Outside of college I do have a number of hobbies that are each different to each other,
some physical, some that help with my career in the future. My long term hobby is show
jumping my pony, I used to do it competitively, however now it is more for leisure. This
hobby has taught me discipline and routine, as being an equine is a very demanding job,
meaning I can cope well when demands are high and pressure is on. I alsoYouTube,
mainly for One Direction members, to me this shows loyalty as I’ve been a fan of the band
for almost 8 years now (since 2010). Being aYouTuber definitely shows loyalty and
dedication because of having to have content to upload numerous times a week and the
determination to edit them at the end of it all which is very time consuming. It is also
good for time management as I have to edit and upload certain vlogs within a certain time
frame in order to keep my audience happy and loyal to me.Through being a fan of One
Direction, it is easy to say that I now have an army of friends who are also fans of the band
that I have met through attending their concerts, again showing loyalty and confidence to
be able to meet and speak to new people on the daily; showing social skills which is
important to have within the music industry.
20. Conclusion
Going to university will help me achieve my life goals to work within the creative industry.
In order to achieve my goals after university is to get my head down and really focus on
my studies and getting out in the world of music or film, whatever I decide, and make
myself available to anyone who may need help on their end. I feel I will make a good
candidate for university as I am very driven, especially when it is a topic I am interested in
as I want to be able to push myself to deliver the best work I can.
21. Introduction
The courses I have chosen to study for at university are very different from each other,
although still within the media industry, some included television, others include the music
industry. Both careers have had a heavy influence on my upbringing, always being around
creatives within media, starting with my mum owning her own fashion magazine in Marbella
to now, where I now myself have my ownYouTube channel with over 700 subscribers and up to
2000 followers on all social media. Music is something I have grown up around, having grown
up listening to different genres from house music to classical, hence the decision to do music
business as I would really like to learn how the industry works behind the scenes and maybe
manage my own band one day.
One reason why I wanted to apply for film courses is because I develop a keen interest in the
film industry, however the careers I am wanting to study are both different from each other;
directing and acting. The reason I have recently become interested is because of my vlogging,
it has really made me realise how interesting the film industry is to a point where I now have
considered studying it at university.Acting is something that has been an interest of mine
since I was very young, only now deciding I want to consider it a career option for my future.
I want to study at university in order to understand life in the work place, gain experience in my
chosen profession and also gain contacts within that industry. The reason I have chosen the
universities I have is because they each only specialise in one subject, music or film, and I feel
that because the tutors soul purpose is to teach that one subject and have no other students
learning anything but what you are in your industry, I feel it will be a better experience as we all
have the same in common.
