2. Existing Product – Going Vegan
As someone who has a family member who turned vegan in the last 4 years, it is a
difficult diet to maintain for a lengthy period of time. Dietary requirements are one of
the hardest things to adapt to when first turning vegan, checking food labels to see what
contains milk/eggs, finding replacements for certain ingredients when cooking/baking.
The videos people watch mainly about becoming vegan are very gory and graphic,
showing the way animals are being treated before going to be slaughtered and I feel
there should be more videos out there that are less graphic and more factual about why
going vegan is better for the well being of livestock. The channel I have reviewed I one
called ‘NikkiVegan’ ad is about a woman who shows how to create vegan meals, snacks
and what to do on holiday when you’re vegan or have a vegan diet. This account has the
perfect content for wanting to become vegan, especially with the several different
recipes as that is one struggle people have when wanting to become vegan.
If I were to create my own video on this topic, I will include
the main question people have when first turning vegan
‘what can I eat?’ t is a very common questions, for those
who are and are not vegan and I’d like to explain within my
video how simple life can be as a vegan. I will briefly
explain recipes and show differences in food that contains
milk and eggs ad food that does not, explaining similarities
and differences between each food item.
3. Existing Product – Going Vegan
The left thumbnail lacks the colour, it has one bright circle of colour in the centre of the
image and two images at either side that lack that colourfulness compared to other
thumbnail to the right, however the typography on the left thumbnail does tell the
viewer a little more about he video. The title is there, telling the viewer what the video is
about, however the circle on the thumbnail itself explains what the food item is and a
brief description as to what the image on the right represents. The thumbnail on the
right may seem plain, but the bright colour of the pasta makes the thumbnail look more
inviting. Similarly with the other thumbnail, the typography is different to what the
actual title of the video is, giving viewers that extra piece of information; even if it isn't
factual information, it does give you more of an insight as to what content will be within
the video. If I were to create my own vegan video that will draw my viewers in, I will
mainly focus on having the colourful thumbnail, as that is what makes peoples heads
turn, people like things with colour, and if they cant immediately see the content, they at
least want to know what video
content they will be looking at just
by how the thumbnail looks. Text
wise, I will keep it limited on the
image, but have some briefing as
to what to expect in the video
that isn’t on the title.
4. Existing Product – Horse Care
People don’t understand the importance of taking care of horses, everyone tends to
think it’s a walk in the park. Personally, I don’t feel there is enough information on the
internet as to how caring for a horse is viewed more as a fulltime job than it is a hobby,
so I would like to produce a video that shows the difficulties of owning and exercising
horses daily. One of the most popular YouTube channels that contains information like
this is one called ‘Simply Equine 27’. Her videos are 90% about her and her horses,
including horse care and ‘how to’ videos. Upon looking at most of her videos, I have
noticed that there aren’t a lot of tips and tricks to owning your first pony/horse or
transitioning from ponies to horses and I feel that both of these are videos that NEED to
be acknowledged and talk about more as it is important information to learn and have
knowledge on, especially if you want to have happy, healthy first horses/ponies.
For my own equine video, I will explain the difficulty with
owning your own horse and how time consuming it can be,
long evenings after school/work, vet bills, feed, care for the
horse itself etc. Also I’d like to briefly explain the transition
from ponies to horses and it can be quite a hard transition
to get used to, but with good training can be easy to figure
out.
5. Existing Product – Horse Care
The first thumbnail for the video is simple, yet effective. It has a picture of the horse,
showing the main feature of the video. A short, yet colourful and bold title on the image
itself as well as that being the name of the video also. The video itself is just under 8
minutes long which I feel is a good length of a video containing this sort of information
as it is only a ‘day in the life’ video. The thumbnail to the right is, again, colourful and
also includes emoticons which, for the age range she is going for, use within their texts so
they will automatically want to watch the video because of those. The typography is also
a bright colour with a white boarder surround it making it jump off the screen and grasp
the attention of the audience. Again, the image used is of a horse, giving the audience an
indication as to what/who to expect coming up in the video most often. If it comes to me
creating my own horse video, I will include similar colours and images within my own
thumbnail in order to grasp the attention of my own audience. Personally
I don’t feel these thumbnails
look professional, however they
do look girly so I’d like to be able
to make my own hold that girly
aspect for young girls preferably
to be drawn to but also look
professional too so my video is
taken seriously.
6. Existing Product – Videos Regarding
Panic Attack
I feel anxiety is a mental health issue that not enough people talk about or seek help for.
It is one of those health issues where when people who have it talk about it, they can
trigger it to happen, therefore don’t speak out enough about it because of the trauma it
causes when an anxiety attack makes its presence. I feel there aren't enough YouTube
videos that discuss this issue, therefore it is hard for people to understand it as, like I say,
some don’t like to talk about it openly to others in case they aren’t 100% sure how to
help them. I feel having YouTube videos with the main ‘host’ being someone that suffers
from these attacks will benefit others and help them understand how to cope when one
comes on. I feel I needs explain more the process of the whole thing, especially a change
of diet as not a lot of people know that if you cut out certain foods/drinks they are able
to almost stop the attacks from coming on. If I were to create a video regarding panic
attacks and going into them deeper than others,
7. Existing Product – Panic Attacks
These thumbnails I feel are a perfect way to show panic attacks, there’s visuals in both
real life and cartoon form which I feel are both very well portrayed as the real life visual
shows what you look like having the attack (i.e. what signs to look out for if you see
someone in this state in public) and the cartoon visual is a little OTT as to what you
would see, however still puts the pint across but in a more friendly way that makes
people feel more at ease. I feel both designs are something I would look into creating for
this particular video as they both display the content of the video as well as the title
telling you what is in the video. I think I’d want to lean more towards the cartoon
thumbnail as the video is such a serious topic, I’d like to display that informality at the
start of the video to show that it is a serious topic but is being displayed in a different
light o they don’t feel threated or triggered before even watching the video because of
the thumbnail.
8. Existing Product – My Own Vlogs
As a Youtuber myself, I understand what it is my particular target audience enjoy seeing
when viewing my content. I usually film my own concert experiences, people mainly
enjoy watching the build up to the concert and the concert itself. My vlogs are around
20-30 minutes long depending on the content I have; I also film 5-10 minute long news
updates about what has happened within the music industry, more specifically One
Direction, as they are who my target audience enjoy hearing about. As these videos are
something I already do in my spare time, I may not do this as a final product as I already
have enough content for this particular kind of video and I’d like to expand on that and
make something a little different to what I usually would. The content I put up is usually
edited down massively because I feel some YouTube videos can drag on if the Youtuber
talks constantly with no breaks between to show scenery etc.
Some Ideas I Have For Other Videos:
• Lifestyle Choices
• Mental Health
• Concert Emotions
9. Existing Product – My Own Vlogs
For my thumbnails, I usually take a screenshot of myself from a specific part of the vlog I
feel will attract my audience to watch my videos, those images being something that I
feel will resonate with the title of the video, or something that portrays some form of
emotion; especially if I make the video title a question, then that makes my audience
want to know what has happened to cause me such emotion. I feel the designs on my
thumbnails differentiate my videos from others, especially with the block white shapes
and I feel that if I made that part of my “trademark” it would make people know the
difference between my videos and someone else's who films similar content to myself. I
like to put my logo on my videos also, letting people know that when they see that
specific image that it is me also, especially on social media pages when I upload the logo
as a profile picture or as a general image, they can relate my logo to my videos.
10. Research summary
Looking at my research, I think I am more likely to do the veganism video as that is
something I can get easy access to and is also something that people struggle
understanding. Anxiety is of course harder to understand, however I wouldn’t want to
put my brother in a situation that could possibly trigger his panic. Anxiety is also quite a
hard topic to talk about, whether its easily triggered or not, as people do genuinely
struggle understand it. My brother says “if you don’t have it, you don’t get it” thus
meaning the veganism video will be easier to film as it isn't triggering, it’s factual and is
also easy to understand once explained in depth. I also feel, for me, it’ll be easier to
find out all the information I need in order to create the video, as well as using my own
knowledge of the situation.
12. Concert Emotions & Why People
Go To So Many Gigs
My first idea is to create a video containing the different emotions people got through
when camping/queuing for live music. As someone who does this myself, I understand
the stress and emotion you go through when doing this activity. However, instead of
myself talking about it, I’d like someone else to explain it from their point of view,
including cartoon sketches, as apposed to real people, within the video and use text to
put emphasis in certain areas. I’d like them to talk about their first camping experience,
why they did it (why they continue to do it), how they felt during the process, a little
about the concert experience and if they would continue doing it for as long as
possible. I want the to go quite in depth as there are a lot of people out there that don’t
understand why we camp and the memories we create before, during and after the
concert because of it. I’d also like the person I talk too to talk about WHY they go to so
many concerts from the same artist (mini tour), I’d like them to explain that even
though it’s the same concert each night there’s something about going round with the
artist to multiple shows that makes it more fun. Like I saw, I will make it more like a
cartoon sketch video as apposed to using real people as I feel that will make the video
seem more “fun” as well as holding that young persons aspect which is the audience
I'm mainly aiming for with this video; as well as curious adults that don’t understand
why their own children camp/tour.
13. Interviewing My Mum About
Veganism
For this video I’m going to start it off as an interview, asking my mum the main
questions people get asked as a vegan. Instead of hearing my voice however, I’ll use text
onscreen to display the questions and videos of my mum answering the questions to
the camera, with some little effects on those videos, but nothing that will attention
away from the information she’s giving. I’d also like her to state some facts about
veganism and what she feels about bing the only person in the household with this
particular diets and how she feels about vegetarians and meat eaters. I’d also like her to
explain in minor detail what made her turn vegan herself, what she did in order to make
her decision final. I’d lie her to finish the video by explaining the foods she eats and
what she can’t eat (histamine intolerance) and why that’s affected her diet further. I’d
also like her to explain the weight loss/gain upon first turning vegan as people dot
understand how drastic that transition can look and/or be. I’d make the whole video
based on cartoon effects rather than have real people on it as I feel that will get the
point across further if there are more visuals as apposed to a sit down interview as after
sometime that can be seen as boring and may make people turn it off due to boredom.
14. Interviewing My Brother About
Living With Anxiety For 12 Years
To me, anxiety is misinterpreted and misdiagnosed, and for someone who has a family
member that has lived with this since he was 16 years old, my knowledge on the topic
has broadened over the years. It is something I feel very strongly about and feel the
word “anxiety” is something people throw around when in reality they don’t know half
of what people who really have it go through. I’d like to make a documentary on my
brother about how he has learnt to cope with it and how he sees it as more a friend
than a pest. In the interview I will ask my brother how he has managed to cope with
having anxiety since he was 16, what he thinks originally brought it on and what he
would tell people who also suffer from the illness. I want him to go into some depth as
to how he copes in his day to day life now, how it affects his work/family life and how
he can prevent his own children from having it. I would also like to ask him what
happened when he had his first attack and how he felt in that moment, not knowing
what was happening to him. I’d like him to finish off by telling people to speak out
about it more, even if others don’t understand, to simply tell them how they feel
instead of suffering alone. I’ll include a range of different shots; some being a real
image of my brother and I, another being a cartoon version of us. I’d like to make the
video seem light and “fun” yet still factual and formal enough for people to take
seriously.
Editor's Notes
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style you could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
