1. Audience Research
Target Audience:
Age:
The target audience for the course would be high school leavers around the age of 16 as this is the
age the college caters to, this is similar to other colleges in the area, and I have taken the target
demographic from the respective college websites:
Cheadle and Marple
“The College offers a wide range of academic, vocational and work-based courses for school leavers of all
abilities and ambitions.”
Aquinas College
“Whether you are approaching 16 and thinking about your sixth form education”
Stockport College
Stockport College offers BTEC courses to cater to high school leavers, I.E people with 5 GCSE’s and no other
qualifications – this is for courses similar to the Creative Media one.
From this I have concluded that the course is aimed at an audience just leaving school and want to carry on
to college education with hopes of getting a job in the creative media section or perhaps going on to higher
education such as university.
Gender:
The course is designed to be suitable for both genders and thus it has a mixed amount of male to female,
however just looking at my course for two years I have noticed that there is a larger amount of males in
comparison to female, I feel the reason for this may be the fact that there is a large amount of computer
work which I feel women do not find as enjoyable as a men, I also think there are other BTEC courses such as
health and social that I feel women will gravitate towards instead of media courses. I have concluded that the
addition of the video game research and creation has put females off doing the Creative Media BTEC
Extended.
Lifestyle:
The type of person who would consider this course would be interested in the media industry and the
practices and the creative processes involved in creating such products. This may include things such as
Photography, videography, animation, typography or digital animation because these things are relevant to
all of the units in the course and a higher knowledge of these subjects will give participants a head start when
doing the course. The ideal student will have prior knowledge of programs such as Photoshop, Flash, Movie
Maker, Director etc... Students should also find it enjoyable and rewarding to create products from these
programs. If areas such as Movies, Games or Animations are found enjoyable by the person then they would
be the perfect student.

2. Location:
The college is aimed at providing education in the Cheadle and the Marple area; I think it is safe to assert that
the people who would be coming to the college would be in the local Manchester area with the furthest
probably being ~10 miles away. I believe that anyone who lives further afield than this will find it difficult to
get into college for the earlier times and this would result in time missed from lessons. Not to mention the
fact High Schools will be promoting and advising students to go to a college in the local area as opposed to
one further away.
Conclusion:
I have come to the conclusion that there is a large and diverse target audience for the course which makes it
very hard to find an exact target demographic who would fit the brief of the course correctly. However there
are a few aspects of the course that would fit specific people. For example it would be better for the student
to have previous experience in using computer programs such as Flash, Photoshop or Director. Their location
should be around the Stockport/Cheadle/Manchester area within a bus ride distance ~1 hour/~10 miles
maximum to ensure they will be in for lessons. There would be no classification of gender as both female and
male would enjoy the course, although the majority of the students are male.
