• This is sick! I had no idea that music journalism was an available course! I always wanted to
work in the music industry but lacked the musical talent. This is perfect.
• Course includes media work – tv, audio, print – whilst also working hand in hand with the
music industry. As someone who has been interested and surrounded by music her whole
life, it is the perfect course for me!
• Placement year as well!!

17. Academic History
• I chose Geography, Physical Education and Art Sculpture as my
options for GCSEs. Doing Art Sculpture helped me discover that I
could manage my own work and was able to be creative in my
ideas. I liked the structure of the course so much, that I decided
that I wanted to study a subject with the same creative
opportunities. This is why going to university to continue a creative
subject would be ideal for me as I would be able to take control of
the projects, making it so I could explore all my creative ideas. I
prefer coursework subject where the exam is a project, rather then
a writing exam, it means that I am able to show off my skills
throughout the year, rather then once in an exam which could go
badly. This is why – although I wasn’t fantastic at the actual physical
work – Art Sculpture was one of my favourite subjects, because I
could be creative, it is also why I chose to not to A Levels. I found
that exams were not my strong suit at all, so going to do A Levels
would have been pointless.

18. Current Study
• I study Creative Media Production at York College. I knew before I even started
year 11 that I did not want to do A Levels, and that I wanted to leave school and go
pursue something that I am passionate about. I found this course when looking
through the York College prospectus and it really called to me.
• I have learnt so much about the media industry and how to construct a good piece
of media work on different platforms. I’ve found that I am quite good at it, and
that I find it easy. It comes naturally to me. I learnt the Adobe software really
quickly, which allowed me to be more ambitious with my ideas as I knew the
applications.
• My favourite project was the print project, where we had to create a magazine
cover, double page spreads and an advert. I liked it so much that I created 2 double
page spreads. My topic was fashion, and I even planned one for my FMP Year 1
(not officially because of quarantine). I think I want to do one for year2 as well, but
a bit differently. I want to focus on music and write a solid article to go alongside it.
• For the longest time, I have wanted to work within the media industry, fascinated
by magazines, television programmes, films, books, writing etc. It always drew me
in as a child, so going to do this course really showed me that I could do that, and
going to university would make that come true.

19. The Future
• Ultimately, I want to be able to work in the music side of the media industry. For
example – working for a music magazine or shooting for musicians or concerts.
This has been a dream of mine for a while and this course would aid me to be able
to live it out. I have also grown up surrounded by music and as I grew up, I realised
I wanted to be around it all the time. Doing a course like Music Journalism would
be so beneficial for me as I could continue my creative media passion whilst
working alongside my love for music. I want to work around photos and print – but
also work hand in hand with the music industry. This course is absolutely perfect
for me as it hits ever aspect that interests me the most.
• This degree would help me be able to sustain a stable career in the future whilst
also opening doors to opportunities along the way. In personal research on how
concerts photographers began their work, it is very unstable. It is very hard to get
noticed and is extremely competitive, however, once you are in, you’re in. Growing
up in a very small city with very little music venues in which I could gain
experience, it would be even harder to be able to get in. I decided to have a reality
check and start to look at suitable options for my future. This is when I came
across this course. I immediately fell in love and knew that it was what I wanted to
do.

20. Outside College
• I volunteer at my local Girlguiding units – Brownies and Guides – I have
been volunteering here for about 5 years. I have been part of the
Girlguiding community since I was about 5/6 years old and have made life
long friends. I like working alongside young children as it has allowed me
to be able to have the qualifications to go on and work for companies such
as NCS or Camp Canada, as I have been able to gain experience and learn
about leadership.
• I also took part in NCS in 2019, and that taught me how to successfully
work in a team.
• I find it difficult to not be creative, like I can’t sit down all day on my laptop
just typing. I have to be hands on doing something, for example, drawing
or knitting, taking pictures, baking, listening to music etc.
• In my spare time, I pick up my camera and do photoshoots for others – I
have done a few for Flooded, a local band (also my friends), my sisters,
friends etc. I like doing photoshoots as I can be creative with them, i.e.
theme, colour scheme, lighting, editing, try new ideas, positioning etc.

21. Conclusion
• I want to go to university as it has all the aspects that will help me achieve where I want to be in
life. It will also help me with life lessons, i.e. living alone, paying bills, managing money and time. I
think that going to university would ultimately be the best decision for me as it will aid me to be
able to work in the industry, as having a degree in this industry could set me apart from other
candidates. It is also something that I am passionate about and would like to study further, and I
think being that passionate about something and actually being excited to go and study it makes
me a good candidate.
• I am hard working, I always put all my effort into all my work. I have a creative mind, I find it easy to
think of new ideas and explore them as far as I can. I don’t hold back at all, if I have an idea, I
explore it to its end, leaving no possibilities out. Creative ideas come to me at random times and I
always note them down, then try them out in my free time and if it goes well, I continue exploring
it. Obviously some of my ideas have been dead-ends or I simply don’t have the resources to be able
to execute them the way I would ideally want to, but I try to not let that stop me. For example, a
month before quarantine was impacted on the UK, I had just bought a new camera and was excited
to be able to use it in the summer, and have a summer of shooting for people and having a creative
time. However, due to the global pandemic, I had to limit what I could do. I create a series called
‘Quarantine Shoots’ in which I used the resources available to me to do photoshoots. I used my
sisters, myself, simply on my daily walks. This kept my brain working creatively and allowed me to
be able to complete the college work I was tasked to do at a reasonable standard.

22. Introduction
• I want to apply for Music Journalism, Broadcast Journalism and
Photography. It has always been a dream of mine to be able to work
behind the scenes of a magazine whilst also being part of the music
industry. These course are ideal for me as it is a stepping stone to
getting to the place I want to be.
• I want to go to university as it will aid me with my studies and it will
also help me become more independent and show me how I can
live on my own. It will help me be more responsible with my
money, time and workload. It also means that I can explore a new
city/town, preparing me if I move away after finishing university. I
also feel like university will help me mature more and act more
adult, giving me insight about living with people who aren’t my
family.
