15. Introduction
Making films have been a passion of mine since
childhood when I joined a media club at my local youth
centre and fell in love with filmmaking and studying film
theory. I have dedicated my college time and free time to
expanding my knowledge of filmmaking. Film production
would be the best fit for me as it would help to develop
those skills to help me be at the top of the field. It will
also put me with a bunch of other filmmakers so finding
talented people to collaborate and work with would be
an amazing opportunity. I have a a strong work ethic and
a very creative mind. This can be shown by work on my
website https://olivernicholson.myportfolio.com
16. Academic History
• Require aspects of English and critical thinking skills –astronomy (
selected)
I mainly studied literary and scientific subjects at GCSE level such as
Geography, triple science and RE. This helped to develop both
analytical and literary skills which I have applied to my media course in
the way I problem solve and make decisions when working in groups.
The many essays/reports we wrote for Geography and RE helped to
prepare me for the amount of writing involved in my course. I was also
selected to do a GCSE in astronomy which involved weekly afterschool
sessions at a local private school, I particularly enjoyed the
astrophotography aspect and based my coursework around it.
Chose btec cos it all meida and mostly practicle and put theory in
practise
17. Current Study – more emphasis on the
English aspect than production
I am currently studying creative media production and technology. I chose a BTEC as it
enables me to study all elements of media including film, photography and digital art.
As apart of this course it allowed me to specialise in one form of media. I chose to
specialise in Film and Television as I have loved all 3 of my filmmaking projects from
the first year in which I created a mock advert for Irn-Bru, a music video for a Jon
Bellion song and two promotional/adverts for the city of York as if done by a travel
agency. From the course I have learned the inner workings of the adobe creative suite
including premier pro, photoshop and audition. I have also worked with professional
filmmaking gear such as sliders, gimbals and audio recorders. Throughout the course I
have also learned many valuable literary skills in the form of script, story writing and
character creation. Continually gaining more critical and contextual ways of thinking.
For example, I analyse each aspect of my work though the planning stages to the final
production, all being written up in comprehensive evaluations giving reasons for and
against my artistic choices, questioning decisions at key moments in each stage of my
work. I independently chose to work collaboratively with drama students to enhance
my advert and music video as it would add another layer of professionalism. This gave
me the opportunity to make character adaptations and script revisions to fit the
personality of the actors. I also demonstrated artistic value to others as I consulted on
and helped to produce two other classmates final projects with them.
18. The Future
After university I really hope to work as an
independent filmmaker creating visually intriguing
music videos and short form media. Though I have
a passion for this area I want to continue to also
work on my photography as a detailed
understanding of photography plays a vital role in
understanding the filmmaking process. I wish to
also continue creating my own independent films
and working as a photographer/videographer for
higher profile clients
19. Outside College
Outside of college I enjoy taking pictures and working with cameras. I
never go on a trip out with out my camera. I have also started working
for clients in my own time such as York Mind and Wonderland Bloom.
These can be found on my website here:
https://olivernicholson.myportfolio.com. I enjoy making videos as well
and am always practising and improving my skill set and knowledge.
This includes studying the work of famous directors such as David
Fincher for cinematic shot styles and following tutorials by youtubers
such as Peter McKinnon and Gene Nagata, this helps to develop my
skills in ways just making films all the time wouldn’t. I am currently
looking into learning FL Studio and Blender to increase my knowledge
of VFX and creating my own score for videos. I feel that music plays a
vital role in videos as it invokes emotions and sets a mood for scenes. I
am currently watching tutorials and practising making songs to gain a
better understanding. All my videos can be found at:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7A_LTDpuDA8DG_frG6semw.
20. Conclusion
I am dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic in
my pursuit of a career in filmmaking. I am
constantly seeking more knowledge of this
subject because I want to be at the top of the
field and am willing to put in the work to do it. I
want to further my skills and love for filmmaking
throughout the years at university.

Editor's Notes
Brief introduction referencing what subject/s (keep general if necessary) you are applying for and briefly why you want to go to university. Why film production – what qualities would you bring to the programme/degree? What and who are your favourite films/directors and why? Your personal strengths and how that prepares you for a job in film.
Write a short paragraph about subjects you’ve already studied at school/college that have helped prepare you for your chosen courses at University- level 2 or GCSE level. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc.
Talk about this course- Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology. Reference how it has helped you prepare for your chosen courses at University. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc.
Reference specific projects and software/hardware that you are familiar with.
What do you want to do in the future (ensure it is related to the subjects you are applying for). How will university help you to achieve that?
What do you do outside college? Any hobbies, part time jobs, client work, volunteer work? How does this make you a better candidate for university study?
Summarise why you want to go to university. What will it help you achieve? Why are you a good candidate?
Keep it short and to the point.
