2. Representation of age:
My music magazines target audience is 16-20, I have represented this
through different features.
Colour, the colours used such as yellow are bright and connotes
freshness and joy, a theme which is largely linked with youth and the
target audience are represented in a positive way. The use of bright
colours together also represent them as being bold and strong
characters, the red and black contribute to this as they are connotation’s
of power. The used of white and yellow together helps boost the positive
representation yellow has already delivered, as white is often associated
with pureness and perfection.
Fonts, there is use of big bold fonts across the whole of the
magazine, the bold fonts represent the target audience of being bold
themselves. The fonts work well with the colour used in the job of
representing the audience, the bold writing which is often in red or
yellow puts across a joyful and fun representation.
Photos, The photos used represent my target audience as youthful, the
clothing used is modern and links to the genre. The photos all have a
direct mode of address, presenting them as strong. The photos used for
the featured band on the contents and the double page spread shows
them smiling this presents them as being happy and carefree. I have
only featured young people in my magazines, this helps to represent the
target audience as they feel as they can relate to them.
Layout, they layout for each of my pages are busy, this represents the
target audience as energetic as they want to see a lot going on and don’t
want to get bored easily.
Language, The language used is simple but still quite sophisticated, it
has informally written articles to address the audience, representing
them with a carefree and fun attitude, and not ‘boring’.
3. Representation of Gender:
Gender is represented in a number of ways in my magazine, but overall I
aimed to represent gender as universal.
Colour, to keep to the universal gender representation I used only
universal colours red, black, yellow, and white are all universal, the
colours connote a positive representation for both genders. I kept clear
from using pinks and blues to avoid a stereotypical representation of a
gender.
Font, I have used simple bold fonts, to again keep to the universal
gender representation. These bold fonts helps to represent both genders
as equal and bold.
Photos, The photos used represent both males and females , as I have
used photos of both genders. Even though in my magazine the majority
of the photos are of females this just happens to be a coincidence. The
females in my magazine are represented as strong through the direct
mode of address in all of the photos. The clothing used is simple but
fashionable, beanies (hats) are used in two of the photos , one on a
female and one on a male this represents the universal gender as equals.
Layout, the layout follows the conventions for my genre of magazine, so
the main featured act is always the centre of attention, in this case the
main act are females. The layout represents them as important.
Language/context, the context in my magazine describes the acts as
being energetic ,talented, modest and happy. As the magazine is
universal both are represented in this way. The language used to address
the audience is informal yet still sophisticated, it represents both genders
as being clever yet quite laid back.
4. Representation Social Class:
The class which my magazine targets is standard middle class, there
are many features in my magazine which represent this.
Colour, The colour used represents the middle class as it uses bold
colours which would be eye catching and appealing to someone of
this class, as the working class is known as modern. They are not to
sophisticated and extravagant in a way which would appeal to the
higher class.
Font, The fonts used are bold which is again eye catching, they
represent the middle class ,as they are not to fancy and not to simple,
they make the magazine look interesting in a way that will appeal to
people in the middle class, because again the bold use of text
represents the modern middle class.
Photos, The photos represent the middle class as the clothing is
stylish and modern, but clearly not extremely expensive.
Layout, The layout is simple and not too confusing and complex, it is
however busy and includes a lot , it represents the middle class
because of this.
Language/Context, The language and context used represents the
middle class as is mostly informal and simple, yet it is still quite
sophisticated , it uses complex sentences but includes modern slang
language which would appeal to the modern middle class. It is not so
complex and informative which would most probably interest people
of the upper class.
5. Representation of stereotypes:
The social group for my magazine is Males and Females between
the ages of 16-20, my magazine uses stereotypical features to
represent this social group and the alternative genre.
Colours, if I were to create a pop magazine I would use the
stereotypical pinks and purples for the genre. As my magazine is
in the alternative genre I have represented the stereotypes by
using darker colours such as black and red.
Font, I have represented the stereotype for my genre by using big
bold fonts, these are stereotypical as the bold fonts broadcast the
bold and vibrant nature of the genre on music featured in the
magazine.
Photos, the stereotypical photos used in the alternative music
genre are mid shots or long shots with a direct mode of address. I
have represented this stereotype in my magazine on the front
cover and in the contents. It is often stereotypical to include
photos which put across the acts personality, I have represented
this stereotype in the double page spread and contents. I have
also shown stereotypes through the clothing and props, the use of
tartan and a guitar in photos is stereotypically linked to ‘indie
rock’ with falls into the alternative genre.
Layout, The layout represents the genre stereotypically as it is
busy with lots of features to each page.
Language/ Context, The langue and context in my magazine is
stereotypically represented , as it uses slang and directly address’
the audience, and includes bands which are stereotypically
known to be in the alternative genre such as the ‘foo fighters’ and
‘arcade fire’.
