2. Women
A common theme throughout music magazines of the R&B genre is that
fewer women than men pictured on the cover and then throughout the
magazine articles, whereas in pop or chart magazines there is a lot more
female representation. Males, especially black-American men, commonly
dominate the genre of R&B.
Due to this I have gone for a countertype representation, where I have used
a female artist on the cover, contents and double page spread. She is not
represented due to her sexuality, but for her new and fresh sound.Typically,
when women are depicted on R&B covers, it its overtly for sex appeal, e.g.
XXL.
This type of representation of women within the music industry represents
the culture of sex appeal within women and how they are not represented
as talented rather than attractive. My countertype representation is in
retaliation of this and could be seen as an attempt to inspire young girls to
be more than sexual objects.
3. Age
I have chosen to use a young person in my product (in
their twenties) so they can represent and inspire the
younger generation. My target audience is 16-25, so my
main image contains someone right in the middle of this
range. Another way I have represented young people
through my cover artist is by the mis-en-scene used on
her.The ‘props’ used (headphones) show she is dedicated
to her career and is driven. The clothes she is wearing are
old fashioned, vintage sports brands that are more
prevalent throughout the older generations, hinting
toward the younger generation being in touch with the
culture that came before them and not making them
seem too ahead of the times.
4. Class
Within the feature article, I mention the class
my cover artist came from. She is depicted to
come from a poor area in London and was not
given an easy life. She is revealed to have
gotten through the hardships she faced and
pursued the career she wanted all while
attending a grammar school and achieve
excellent grades in school.The representation
this gives of young, poor children is very
inspiring
5. Shot type
In all my images I have used shots with direct address (eye
contact) so the subject is always looking to camera. This
creates a direct mode of address which means the
audience can create a direct and personal connection with
the artist.
The direct mode of address also presents the female artist
and a subject rather than an object as her face is visibly
expressive and she is looking straight at the reader.
I used mid shots in my magazine. As the three main picture
in the magazine are mid shots, of the same model and in
the same setting, this lets the reader make a connection
between all pictures and adds a sense of continutity and
consistency to the magazine which is essential when
creating a professional magazine.
6. Layout
The layout is representative of the young,
urban style of the magazine and the
model/artist featured in it, due to the colour
scheme and general layout.The graffiti
styled mast head is representative of the
urban and rebellious nature of stereotypical
teenagers, especially the demographic that
listen to R&B. On the contents page there
are links and promotions to the social media
pages of the magazine, representing the
brand and the people associated with it as
‘tech savvy’ and up to date with the
internet, which is true to the majority of the
target audience (16-25).
