1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Age
I have represented age in my magazine by using bright and
playful colours on the front cover to youth. The model I
have used is 19, therefore she represents teenagers and
young adults. The clothes that she is wearing are
sophisticated but still young and fun, therefore she
portrays an inspirational figure to teenagers and younger
adults. On the contents page I have included the logos and
links for three social networking websites
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, this represents the age of
teenagers and young adults as social networking and new
media is generally aimed at a younger audience. The
names of artists that I have included on the front cover
and in the contents page such as Rita Ora, Rizzle Kicks and
One direction are all a similar age range to the artist that I
have created for my magazine, therefore representing
young adults and teenagers.
3. Gender
I have represented gender in my magazine by using a lot
of pink colours throughout my magazine to show
connotations of femininity, I have also used female
models for all of the images included in my magazine, I
have decided to dress the main model in clothes that
compliment her figure and accentuate her curves to
strongly represent femininity, this also conforms to Laura
Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze. She is dressed in quite
a glamorous way, but she still looks youthful and
fashionable, therefore suggesting that she could be an
aspirational figure for teenage girls. I have also included a
lot of aspirational female artists on the front cover and on
the contents page of my magazine such as Rihanna and
Beyoncé to represent strong female figures and
representing the female gender.
4. Class
My magazine is representing middle class people, I have
shown this in my magazine mainly by the images that I have
used. The model used in the image on my front cover
represents a middle class audience as she looks fashionable
and is wearing quite sophisticated but affordable looking
clothing and jewellery. She has a healthy appearance and
looks as though she is well educated. The cost of my
magazine is neither cheap or expensive as I have priced it at
£2.50 which is a suitable price for middle class people. The
image I have used on the front cover looks as though they
have been taken in a studio because of the plain simple
backgrounds, instead of on the streets or in a run down
area therefore suggesting a middle class audience instead
of lower class. The language I have used is quite chatty but
also polite and well mannered to suggest a middle class
audience.
5. Social Groups
My magazine doesn’t represent strong features of a
stereotypical social group such as hipster, indie, punk.
My magazine is typically representative of people with a
white British ethnicity, I have suggested this because all
of the models I have included in my magazine are of this
gender and ethnicity, also the use of language, I have
used quite standard English and used a polite well
mannered tone of writing. It also represents female
social groups because of the strong use of pink
throughout which shows connotations of femininity, the
fonts I have used are also quite bold to represent a
strong independent female figures. My magazine also
represents teenage social groups because of the types of
artists I have included such as ‘Rita Ora’ and ‘ Ed
Sheeran’ these artists both represent younger people
because of their age and the type of music that they
produce. I have also included links to social networking
sites such as Facebook, twitter and YouTube which are
typically representative of younger people and
teenagers.
