QUESTION 2 - HOW DOES
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR
SOCIAL GROUPS?
Dylan Oakes
GENDER
Gender is a large social group and it is one of the main groups that is used when
creating media products. I have tried to represent both genders in my music
magazine so that it appeals to both genders. This widens my target audience and
therefore it should increase profit levels.
The main way I have represented a neutral gender is through non-gender specific
colours. On the side is my front cover, my DPS and content page. They all use a house
style of colours including orange, blue, black and white. All of these colours are not
gender specific. If I were to target my music magazine at males I would have used
dark blues, dark reds and more blacks. If I were to make my magazine targeted at
females I would use pinks, purples and yellows. However, I selected those colours as
they appeal to both genders and they are all lighter colours.
Additionally to this I have used both male and female artists. Therefore I believe that I
have represented as well as targeted both genders in the creation of my music
magazine. As this was my aim I believe that I am successful in this area.
SOCIAL CLASS
My aim for representing social class within my music magazine was to
target the ABC1 social classes. These 3 social classes (upper middle class,
middle class and lower middle class) have all been represented. I have
done this primarily through the price. The price is £2.99 which is a
reasonable price for these social classes, anything lower in social class may
consider this as a luxury.
Additionally, the mise-en-scene used also represents these social classes.
The clothing of my main artist indicate this. He is wearing a collared polo
shirt which isn’t too sophisticated but not too common looking. The watch
may be considered as mainly representing the A social class. In the second
image a jacket and a shirt is worn – this also represents these social
classes for the same reason. Also in the second picture the main character
is wearing earphones which can be connoted towards the lower end of
social classes and slightly more common.
SOCIAL CLASS (2)
In addition, the typography and the colours used are not considered of
anything of a higher social class. If my magazine was directed at an upper
class, I would use sophisticated typography with sophisticated colours like
black, white, silver and gold type colours.
Therefore I believe that I have been successful in representing the A, B
and C1 social classes through my magazine. However, I could have also
chosen to represent D and E social classes as these are potential markets
that I could attract as well. Therefore I believe that this would be more
effective than just the three that I chose.
AGE
My target demographic was ages 16-22 and I think that I have
represented these ages effectively through my music magazine. Firstly the
typography and house style that I have used all imply that this magazine is
aimed at teenagers and young adults. If I were to create a music magazine
for a younger demographic I would have used more brighter and more
exciting colours as well as more exciting and simpler typography. Also my
DPS would have included less writing and more pictures. If I were to
create a magazine for an older demographic I would’ve use more
sophisticated colours and typography but also more simplistic with a lot
more text present. These are general features for those demographics and
the demographics I chose would have connotations of the features that I
have included.
AGE (2)
Additionally, my characters are of those ages and therefore appealing to
that demographic too. The clothing that the artists are wearing are all
clothing associated with this demographic for example the jeans, the over
shirt, the t-shirt, the hat and the sun glasses are all types of clothing that
this demographic would wear.
Therefore I believe that I am very successful in appealing to my chosen
demographic and this social group of teenagers to young adults.
GENRE
My target audience in terms of genre was for people who like
popular/mainstream music and multiple genres in general. I believe that
my characters are not genre-specific and are quite ‘mainstream’.
Additionally, I have added features throughout that indicate my music
magazine is a multi-genre music magazine (below).
Therefore I believe that I am successful in representing my target
audience of multi-genre music and this particular social group.
