National Media Institutions
Media institutions are companies that deal with the creation and distribution
of magazines. They are vital partin the success of magazine because, well
known institutions like Bauer, will give the magazine a better opportunity to
get seen and viewed on a wider scale. There are 3 big national institutions in
the UK. They are Future, Bauer and BBC. I will comparethe institutions and
research how they distribute their magazines.
Bauer
Bauer Media UK is an entertainment network that works
with iconic and multi-platform brands. Founded in 1875,
in Hamburg they now distribute magazines and radio
channels in many countries like Germany, Poland,
Australia and the USA. This gives the company, now a
fifth-generation owned business, an advantageover their competitors because
they can advertiseother products within successfulones, ensuring thatless
popular magazines become more awareof through showcasing it to their
customers. They are Britain’s biggest magazine publisher, having a heritage
that goes all the way back to 1953. Their 3 biggestmagazines produced are
Closer, Take A Break and TV Choice, arguably some of the most popular in
Britain. Having radio channel connection can make advertising much easier
because they can advertise their products for free, meaning more of the
budget can go to the content, overall making it a better magazine. Bauer would
definitely make my magazine stand out from the crowd, getting it the advertise
coverageit needs and also the industry links to give it the best content
possible. However, the genre that my magazinehas doesn’trelate to their
previous work. Therefore, maybeanother institution could give me better
adviseand also links into the sports industry.
Future PLC
Futureis a British media company founded in 1985. Its
main genres that it publishes tend to be Electronic, Video
Gaming and technology, thereforedoesn’t link to my
genre, however, Future’s knowledgeaboutmagazines
would enable my magazineto be the best it can be.
Futureis a British company, founded in Somerset, however, owns FutureUS.
They branched themselves out to the US in order to distribute their magazines
more, and also venturing into differentmarkets. Italso expanded out even
more in 2016, by buying various companies like Blazing Publishing, in order to
enter the shooting industry, while they also bought out their rivals Imagine.
These business strategies haveenabled the company to grow, resulting in its
products getting my coveragedue to the scale of the company it’s owned by. I
believe that Future would help my magazine grow into a national renown
magazine, showcasing themost lucrative articles. Their links to the US could
also increasethe likelihood of a US edition of the magazine, if it’s successful.
Their most well-known magazines would haveto be Edge, as well as their
PlayStation and Xbox magazines.
BBC
The BBC is Britain’s biggest broadcasting
company. Founded on the 18th
October 1922, the
British Broadcasting Corporation deals within
many different markets, like television, niche
magazine markets and also sports. Employing
over 20,000 staff, theinstitution publishes many niche magazines, like Match
of the Day, Top Gear and Countryfile. These magazines are all equally
successfulbecausethey are perfectly suited to their audience, making them
stay loyal and continuously buy the magazine. I believe that the BBC will make
my magazinea well-known and popular magazine among football fans within
the North East. Their television links would enable me to advertisemy
magazine on a wider scale and also connect with my target audience through
regional channels that they own. This would also give me inspiration for
creating adverts within the magazine, becauseI could then advertise other
products within the BBC company.
