Participation/Project Information: Motivate to Innovate Change in Others
1) Feel: What is the problem you are attempting to change?
The problem that the students identified and felt strongly about was that their
peers, as well as themselves, were lacking self discipline and self respect in their
classrooms. The group noted that students talk a lot during class, which is
distracting to others, especially around exam time. “Our classrooms do not have
doors and are very noisy. When others talk, fight, or joke around we cannot hear the
teacher and it disrupts class and our studies. This is also not a good way to respect
oneself or the time spent in the classroom.” They wanted to encourage others to
think on these two topics and work towards a better classroom environment.
2) Imagine: Tell us some ideas imagined.
Ideas the students wrote down:
1) Having our principle encourage each class and speak strongly to us about
behavior 2) Hold a rally in our neighborhood about self-discipline and how it is good
to have for our future careers 3) Make posters for our school to KEEP about what
self respect and self discipline IS and examples of how to work on having more of
both individually. And also present these posters and discuss why it is important to
have good self-discipline and good self-respect as personal goals. 4) Creating a
flier/circular that we could hand out to other schools in the neighborhood
explaining the problem and increasing awareness in this area.
2. 3) What was your final solution and how did you change the situation and yourself?
They decided since exams were fast approaching, as well as the bandh, the best way
to reach the most amount of students in a week would be to create the posters in
groups and then present the posters to each class, 6th – 10th class. The posters had
written examples of what self - discipline is and why it is important during high
school and why it will be vital for the students’ future. They also explained what
self-respect meant to us and how we respect ourselves is how we will respect others
in our lives.
What the children discussed that they learned from the project:
During the process we learned a lot about what it takes to have self-discipline in
studies, home, and in sports. Things like being organized, studying for exams,
completing projects on time, and maintaining other good habits (proper unit for
manners) will help us to be better citizens and also better individuals. As we
presented we called on other students to give examples and feedback if they
understood the concepts. Sharing about our own struggles in the classroom with
other students were not keeping good habits of self –discipline was a good way to
engage the others. We shared all of these things with our students in our school and
gave them the poster reminders to keep in the classroom of how important it is to
have strong self-respect for yourself and good habits of self-discipline. “
4) Number of students participated: 25 students (all of 9th class participated in some
way). 9th class split into 4 groups and each group separately created posters and
presented to another high school class totaling 4 class (6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th). Total
impacted by the project = over 100 students were able to hear the presentations
and discuss with the students about self-discipline and self-respect. 5 posters were
hung in the school (6th -10th class) as reminders of the DFC project.
