Les questions relatives aux impacts du numérique dans l'éducation et la formation font couler beaucoup d'encre. Entre discours enthousiasmants, résistances farouches et déconvenues fracassantes, entre les potentiels des TICe et les nécessités de faire évoluer leurs contextes d'implantation, il est bien difficile de tracer un cheminement fertile pour que nous, humains, ne restions pas au bord des autoroutes de l'information qui nous submerge et de la communication qui nous épuise. Il ne s'agit pas d'ajouter une couche technologique aux habitudes de transmission des savoirs prises à l'époque où le livre était rare. L'école (au sens large) demande une révision profonde. D'espace "privé" en lieu et temps, elle devient plus que jamais espace d'écolage pour la société complexe, espace mobile pour un apprentissage toute la vie durant. Le réseau rend poreux les cloisonnements artificiels entre les disciplines les rendant ainsi plus aptes à se confronter aux situations et aux problèmes locaux et régionaux. La distance toute virtuelle redonne de la valeur à la présence. Les classes inversées ou flipped classrooms, les Learning-Lab … nous montrent le chemin mais la route sera longue. Il ne s'agit en effet pas tant d'outils, de méthodes que de changements de mentalités. La nécessité de ces changements, de ces états d'esprit est évidente, les technologies sont là au moment opportun, à la fois cause et solution, à la fois remède et poison comme dirait Socrate … tout y est. On her first day, she was introduced to Assistant Principal Mrs. Adderly and observed a first grade classroom taught by Mrs. Lewis with 22 students. Later she observed an ESE classroom taught by Mrs. Samuda which had 10 special education students from grades 1 to 3. Williams noticed the classrooms were filled with diversity and learned that teachers work hard to expand students' minds in creative and dedicated ways.

the most economically depressed neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, Calif. The first thing that struck
us was how strict the teachers were. But it was a strictness that always was inseparable from a grander pur-
pose, even in students’ minds. For example, a 2nd grader admitted, “Ms. G kept me in the classroom to do
my work. She is good-hearted to me.” A high school math student wrote, “I think Mrs. E is such an effec-
tive teacher because of her discipline. People might think she is mean, but she is really not. She is strict.
There is a difference. She believes every student can learn.”

The teachers we studied had the highest percent-
age of students moving up a level on the English/lan-
guage arts or math subtests of the California Stan-
dards Test (CST) for two to three years. Toward the
end of the school year, we asked their students why
they thought their teacher taught them so much.
One Latino 4th grader summed up much of what we
discovered: “When I was in 1st grade and 2nd grade
and 3rd grade, when I cried, my teachers coddled
me. But when I got to Mrs. T’s room, she said, ‘Suck
it up and get to work.’ I think she’s right. I need to
work harder.”
