2. 1st set of Images
These set of images would pose well to increase the brand identity of my artist.
By capturing images from the same angle repetitively, it granted me scope to
change lighting and elements of the cinematography prior to photographing the
image. The image in the top right is slightly darker due to it being shot using
naturalistic and diegetic lighting to capture a realistic image and this approach is
repeated in the bottom left image. However, the shadows present were too
prominent and I wanted to reduce these to convey my artist in a brighter light to
present a warmth to the audience. Although this could have been achieved in
post production, I wanted to achieve this with lighting techniques which could
then be altered in photoshop if needed. Both of the second images in both
columns display this reduction of the shadow under the chin of my subject and
this was achieved with non diegetic lighting under the chin of my subject. Once
this lighting was in place, I wanted to explore the effects of three point lighting
and the impact that set up would have on my artist. As the images display, it had
an altogether more brighter and better quality of image to use in my post
productions. I experimented with distance in which the image was taken by
moving the camera to allow the distinct features to be more prominent and
create this sense of personality and closeness between audience and artist. By
using indirect address, I am conforming to the genre as the performer is staring
away from the camera which symbolises the distance with the mainstream
industry. Furthermore, it shows how he is focused and concentrated in his music
and establishing himself as an artist without distraction. Overall, these images
would allow me to enhance my brand identity from my artist whilst playing with
the use of shadows and the effects which they can create.
3. 2nd set of images
This image perhaps displays the bleak and strenuous feelings of broken and
fragmented relationships whilst conforming to stereotypes of youth as
socialising in industrially destroyed areas with graffiti to do and crimes to
commit and in terms of the social message that it depicts, it leaves a lot of
room for interpretation and provides characterisation despite not telling
much of a story. The metal bars provides connotations of safety being
ignored and the river helps this emotive sense I am trying to convey within
the image. For the most part, this image is highly desaturated to reinforce this
idea of difficulty when relationships break down. In regards to technical
elements, I decide to comply with the rule of thirds to allow the industry and
backdrop to contrast with the graffiti and I think it makes from an intriguing
and usable image. Furthermore, my subjects outfits marries in with the
background and this sense of loss and isolation is born.
This image is cleverly produced in my opinion. The manner in the diegetic
light is bleak and the nature dead beautifully portrays the feelings
present after a breakup but also conforms with the naturalistic elements
present in indie rock albums. The mise en scene married with the
depleted backdrop makes for an image with an interesting image. The
subject in the image is closer to the camera than in the previous image
which makes the audience form a better relationship but also the fact his
facial elements are visible and this allows for a more empathic feeling
from the audience. Once again, I elected to comply with the rule of thirds
to allow the background to be a prominent feature of the image. Once
again, the breakdown in industry in this image is intriguing and by using a
canal, a place where industry use to thrive, and subverting it, it creates
an engaging and alternative outlook.
4. 3rd set of images
These images display a direct contrast to my last set which displayed the more negative aspects of relationships
and the hurt which is so palpable. These images display the flip side of that coin and provide a plethora of
connotations from which I can enhance my print productions to balance. These images could be used in
my inside panels to graphically display the contrast of emotions present in relationships both during and
after. The audience is presented with the key themes of the album before listening to it and this could help
with the contextualisation but also allows me to make themes which were hidden in my video to become
more pertinent. These images use alternative lighting techniques and the images have already been
enhanced in post production to make them appear more cinematic and provide the image with a warmth
which grants potetial to contrast with the previously desaturated and isolated images previously seen. The
blocking of the actors is closer and they take prominence over the background.
