The document discusses how a media product used, developed, and challenged conventions of the drum and bass music genre. It summarizes expected conventions like dancing scenes, DJing scenes, narratives, pulsing music, and location montages. It then provides three examples of how the media product used conventions by including club scenes and location/emotional shots. It developed conventions by making shots from a character's point of view and adding color adjustments. Finally, it challenged conventions with a unique spinning camera shot, short repetitive shots, and an extremely emotional mourning scene not typically seen in the upbeat genre.

develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products ?

2. Expected conventions of Drum & Bass music:
• Dancing scenes
• DJ’ing scenes
• Narrative
• Pulsing
• Location montages
• Consistent beat
• Fast tempo
• Main character(s)
3. How did I use media conventions?
This example shows the use of media conventions because the common theme of music videos within this
genre are a mix of location montages as the music builds but also medium close ups of faces to create
emotion in the narrative.
My second example shows the use of a very stereotypical club scene within a music video, it is
usually shown when the music reaches it’s and ‘drops’. It creates a very chaotic and adrenaline
building feel that I think matches the music really well
4. How did I develop media conventions?
This example shows development of the original shot. Both shots show dual perspective from two peoples point
of views, however my shot shows a point of view perspective from the character(s) rather than just them in the
setting.
I have filmed here something similar to the original but I have added a fade effect and some colour adjustment thus developing
the original idea. I think the colour adjustment of a slight black and white effect helps the shot to appear more dull and lonely
which matches the narrative theme I was aiming for.
5. In what ways did I challenge media conventions?
This is a close up shot of my actor who is
holding the camera himself and spinning
around as the lyrics read “Now we spin”
this matches the song perfectly and
challenges the genre conventions because
whilst researching similar products it was a
shot that did not appear in any music
videos, making it quite unique and new to
the genre. I would say it still matches the
genre well though.
This shot also challenges expected
genre conventions because I have also
never seen it before, I think this is
because its simplicity allows it to be
overlooked. The combination of 4 short
shots together creates the effect of a
long period of time cut down to a few
shots.
This scene shows an extremely
emotional shot of my character who is
mourning his recently passed
girlfriend. I think it challenges the
genre because this genre is not often
associated with a sad/depressing
theme therefore the variants you do
see of this type of shot are usually
more mild and just a facial expression.
