1. Band/Artist images
This is an image of pop singer Ellie Goulding. Notice how this
image makes specific use of lighting techniques. For example, the
image is shot so that the light primarily comes in from the left. This
intense artificial light helps to enhance the singer’s features as well
as give it a professional style. This image also makes use of
Gutenberg’s rule of thirds theory. For example, the singer is placed
in the primary optical area so that her face is naturally the first
thing we see. The dead spaces of the image are left empty which is
an advantage as we are not directed elsewhere and stay focused
on the artist. In terms of Mise en scene, the image is left relatively
simple and isolated which could emphasise that the singer is a solo
artist as well as connote power. Also, the singers costume is
slightly provocative which could engage the younger male
audience in the way that other images of the singer might not.
This is an image of the arctic monkeys, a British band. Notice how this image is
totally grey scaled which gives it an authentic/vintage look. This could suggest
that the band is similar to older bands like the Beatles or at least that they aim
to be as successful. In composition, this image makes use of depth of field, in
that the first two band members are in clear, sharp focus whereas the two
members furthest away appear to be slightly out of focus. This could imply that
the two at the front are in terms of popularity, the most important. Also, notice
how only one of the members is actually looking into the camera. This could
connote dominance and suggest that he is the most desirable member. The
lighting in the image is natural light coming from the back which again makes
the member looking into the camera stand out more that those looking away
suggesting an element of superiority.
