Benchmarking (count and compare) can serve many purposes, but the most important purpose is to define what’s most important! Everyone’s likely heard some variation on the business maxim, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure,” but the corollary consequence, “you tend to manage what’s being measured” is often overlooked. Bottom line, if we want our chapters to help us serve the members and move the mission, we need to benchmark those behaviors that help us achieve that end. In other words, let’s count the things that count…and, oh by the way, all the things that count can’t necessarily be counted! Benchmarking also implies comparison, and here’s the other important purpose. When we measure and make comparisons on those metrics which are truly important, we can then identify our “bright spots” – the high achievers – and replicate those behaviors across the system. Win-win!! We talk about what we’re benchmarking (or not) and why. While there’s no guarantee, experience suggests that “if you measure it, they will do it,” so let’s be sure we measure the right stuff.

- A tale of two chapters 160 page operations manual “Mission” appears a handful of times…and no real discussion of goals or how those goals drive the HQ mission Min req with no mission or member service metrics In 2020 chapter A went into hibernation, but met all the min requirements Chapter B went all out to help members cope w/Covid, but only held two of four required “chapter meetings” (i.e. where you talk about “chapter business”) HQ threatened to withhold funds from Chapter B What’s wrong with this picture? Let’s take a look at the attributes of strategic effectiveness
- Shared vision and mission Slightly more than half usually aligned
- 29% of respondents scored their chapter system in the top two quintiles with respect to quality while the majority offered a middling score or less
- Is the juice worth the squeeze? Are the results worth the effort? Only a third usually deliver a good value.
- Appropriate risk/reward ratio 4% Risk free 74% Occasional missteps

- Set priorities If everything is important…nothing is important
- Find…and REPLICATE! – Beat the Board!!!
- Be sure that what we’re doing is worth the effort.
- And If You don’t Measure It, You Can't Improve It.
