Drive Chapter Behavior with Targeted Benchmarking

Editor's Notes

  1. What is benchmarking? According to Webster, Benchmarking is setting a “standard by which others may be measured or judged” All about comparing, right? - My horse is faster than your horse. - My dad is stronger than yours. - My chapter is better than yours! Scrabble – beat the board. We’re a TEAM And now a word from our sponsors!
  2. Let’s Meet the Team – These webinars are brought to you by the fab partnership of Billhighway & Mariner Management! Billhighway – Is a Chapter Management Solution. We provide the perfect balance between headquarters visibility and chapter autonomy. Mariner – Let’s create the greatest possible value for your members and volunteers!  Our Shared Purpose To build community the component relations community and connect CRPs.
  3. Sign up or be on the lookout for the June webinar! Mapping Your Volunteer Learning Journey Sign up >> https://bit.ly/3unCNKe And don’t forget BH/MM presentation on Bright Spots at MMC on June 3
  4. What is Effective? What do we Assess? How do we Benchmark? (This is about comparing our chapters to each other, not comparing association chapter management systems to other association chapter management systems)
  5. Think of your absolutely favorite chapter… What makes it stand out? Favorite vs Best – Is it effective?
  6. Do your favorites actually get the job done? What “job” do they get done?
  7. Activity (Effort) vs Results
  8. POLL
  9. How are most of the metrics collected(check one)? Self-reported Shared data platforms/common systems Some combination of the above
  10. How do you use the results (check all that apply)? Spotlight successes Remedial training Financial rewards Additional support Cut the cord Other (describe in chat)
  11. A tale of two chapters 160 page operations manual “Mission” appears a handful of times…and no real discussion of goals or how those goals drive the HQ mission Min req with no mission or member service metrics In 2020 chapter A went into hibernation, but met all the min requirements Chapter B went all out to help members cope w/Covid, but only held two of four required “chapter meetings” (i.e. where you talk about “chapter business”) HQ threatened to withhold funds from Chapter B What’s wrong with this picture? Let’s take a look at the attributes of strategic effectiveness
  12. Shared vision and mission Slightly more than half usually aligned
  13. 29% of respondents scored their chapter system in the top two quintiles with respect to quality while the majority offered a middling score or less
  14. Is the juice worth the squeeze? Are the results worth the effort? Only a third usually deliver a good value.
  15. Appropriate risk/reward ratio 4% Risk free 74% Occasional missteps
  16. Three valid reasons
  17. Set priorities If everything is important…nothing is important
  18. Find…and REPLICATE! – Beat the Board!!!
  19. Be sure that what we’re doing is worth the effort.
  20. And If You don’t Measure It, You Can't Improve It.
  21. We manage what we measure If you wear a fitbit, you count your steps!
  22. Remember the tale of two chapters
  23. The faster you drive, the sooner you get there It may be safest to go zero mph, but… And there’s another equally important question to think about…
  24. Beat the board – a collective focus The American Cancer Society wants to BEAT CANCER (i.e. the Board)
  25. Are the majority of your chapters run by …? Paid Staff Volunteers Not sure
  26. Tap into collective creativity Encourage chapters to try new things
  27. Encourage experimentation – try new things!
  28. Key Process Metrics Advocacy passage of legislation which drives the three R’s – e.g. HB0164/SB116 promoting market development obstruction of legislation which obstructs the 3 Rs – e.g. SB0684/HB0982 bottle bill Education – well-attended, highly rated conference, workshops, webinars and tours
  29. Think of the Collective Mission
  30. If you want to Drive Chapter Behavior with Targeted Benchmarking…MEASURE WHAT MATTERS
  31. Bring the data together or figure out what it means…we’re here to help. Billhighway Software like Billhighway allows for a healthy balance of association visibility and chapter autonomy.
