3. Research
I believe that my research helped me the most during the
development of my magazine as it allowed me to explore,
deconstruct and reconstruct magazines and posters that
are already popular on the market. This helped my
magazine gain an authentic feel and look to the magazine.
The strengths of my research I would say would be the
existing products which like I said allowed me to
deconstruct already popular items already on the market.
The weakness of my research would be the audience
research as I would’ve like to be more detailed and
thorough and have asked more the ten questions. I
would’ve like to have asked more detailed questions as
well as ask more questions. The hardest part about the
audience research was trying to find people who knew
about the anime and manga industry, as well as Japanese
music. I managed this by posting the link on anime chat
rooms, asking anime dedicated Instagram accounts and
asking my friends who I knew watched anime. I feel like if I
did ask more detailed questions I would’ve been able to
narrow the target audience and make them feel more
welcome.
4. Planning
Personally I believe that my planning was mostly okay except
for the mind map which I will improve on later. I believe that
the mood boards were the strongest part of the planning as I
created three different mood boards however I kept the theme
similar. The top mood board is form different anime and manga
I could’ve talked about. The second mood board was
inspiration for my merchandise, clothing and adverts. The third
and final mood board was the inspiration for the front cover
and articles inside the magazine. The planning helped my
magazine as it gave me a clear idea of what I successful
magazine looked like. It also helped to keep my magazine at a
professional looking magazine level which also helped me to
create my adverts. My weaknesses of my planning were the
mind map as I started to struggle to think of ideas. I would’ve
liked to improve this as I believe it would’ve helped my
magazine by giving me more ideas for content which I could've
used in the magazine. This would make the magazine overall
more unique and professional.
5. Time Management
I believe my time management was very successful as I finished my work and production with
spare time to check and improve my final product. I think I gave myself a reasonable target to
make my final product with many different smaller projects like the video advert, which is a mash
up of a few anime and clips. Unfortunately I had to remake the video as the file became
corrupted and I could no longer open or export the final file, this set back only took one day to fix
so not too much time was wasted. I would maybe like to improve the magazine by maybe adding
more articles about different areas of the Japanese culture, anime, manga, music and news.
However with all the work I did I am still proud but if I hade time to improve the work I’ve already
done I would’ve liked to write my own articles like I did on the cowboy bebop page unlike using
the descriptions of the anime from online.
6. Technical Qualities
As you can see the front cover to the right is quite similar to my front cover on the left. They
both have similar selling lines, masthead and menu strip. Not to mention they’re both
anime/manga related with the main image being similar. However there is some differences
being the position of the barcode, date line and no buzz word.

7. Technical Qualities
My advert is the one to the left and the existing product Is the one of the right. There is a
few similarities and differences. My magazine advertises many different things and has one
mascot however the existing magazine only advertises three games, each with their own
characters and gives examples of the gameplay. In my advert we see a difference in colour
scheme with the main body of the advert being black and white with a little red however in
my advert we see a white body with a little black and red.
8. Technical Qualities
My product is the one on the left and the existing product is the one on the right. As you can
see there are a lot of differences, the existing product has a colourful background with no
other images just yellow and white text. My product on the other hand has 6 differ et images
with multiple colour text boxes which the colours used are all from the images themselves
another difference between my product and the existing product is that mine has a white
background with a 1cm boarder on each side however the existing product doesn’t have a
boarder. I would say that there is not many similarities, if not none as they pages are very
different. The genre of mine is anime whilst theirs is video games.
9. Aesthetic Qualities
Yes I believe that my work looks good and yes it defiantly is
creative as I used lots of different tools and magazine features. I
believe that the strongest part of my magazine was the front
cover and adverts. To make the adverts I used my poster designs
and placed them into Redbubble which allowed me to use the
images of people wearing my t-shirts and dresses. I also believe
that my articles about my top anime was also one of my
strengths. I think the music page is another one of my strengths
as I wouldn't’t think this article would look no where as good as
it does if it were spread over more pages.
However I believe I also have a lot of weaknesses. For example
the double page about the crew of the bebop, I think I tried to
stuff to much information about them into such a small space it
gets hard to read and concentrate on. If I were able to improve
anything I would improve the double page spread and make a
single page for each member and have it spread over 4-5 pages
rather than 2. I would think this would make the article more eye
catching and make readers want to read it rather then skip it
completely.
10. Audience Appeal
Yes I believe I have managed to appeal my magazine to my target
audience. I achieved this by using recent anime and music as my
topics. Furthermore I also included older anime so the older
generations would be able to get as much entertainment out of
the magazine as the newer anime fans. I learned from my
audience research that my audience mostly liked ‘Studio Ghibli’
anime and music groups like ‘Asian Kung Fu Generation’ which I
wrote about in my magazine. However I only wrote the double
page articles for studio Ghibli and the crew of cowboy bebop, I
used the anime descriptions from ‘Myanimelist.com’ for the top
anime segment of the magazine. I was able to appeal to my
target audience by writing about popular topics such as music,
recent and popular anime. This mixed in with the layout, colour
schemes and price defiantly appeals to belongers and
males/females aged 16-25
12. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• For the magazine, all of the layouts for the pages and the advertisement posters are great.
Although the pages layouts look very similar each one is very different in the amount of
writing, what they talk about and the colours making it not boring as if looking at the same
thing over and over again. The front cover has great images and clearly states what the
magazine is all about very well without making it look cramped. The music for the video suits
it very well and is in beat which makes it run so smoothly, also all of the clips in the video are
related to type of magazine you are creating, mentioning most of the anime you have used in
the video.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• All of the anime mentioned on different pages vary in their age of range so maybe your
magazine could have just included one specific age rating of anime rather than some being
for younger and some older.
13. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• Personally I liked a lot of things about the magazine and video advert. I liked how Alex used
the colour from the image to fill in the boxes in the articles. I also like the adverts and how he
has real people wearing the clothes rather then just the clothes by themselves. Furthermore
I like how the magazine is actually quite descriptive, detailed and contains a lot of text. In the
video I like how the music lines up with certain scenes which I think is pretty cool.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I would maybe like to change the video length and make it a little smaller maybe 2-2:30
minuets instead of 3:15 minuets. I would also probably the song but for now the song suits
the video.
14. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• My personal favourite part of the magazine was the double page spread about Japanese
music. I liked the layout of the page and also the colour scheme of red, grey, black and white.
I also liked how he wrote about a wide range of music genres (punk, pop, soundtracks, etc.)
and anime (slice of life, sports, science fiction, etc.). I think the layout and colour scheme
bring the whole magazine together which attract people to the magazine genre.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I think little details could’ve been done better like say maybe putting the magazine name on
the top of each page and having the page numbers in the middle of the page along the
bottom rather then by the side. I think these little things would’ve made the magazine look a
little more professional.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
• In my peer feedback I agree that I should add age ratings onto the individual anime I am
talking about as some of them are for a mature audience. Or make the magazine for one
specific age range like 14-16 or 18+.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
• I would disagree with having to make the video shorter as I like how the music lines up with
the clips. This wouldn’t work if I were to make the video shorter as the music wouldn’t match
up. I also disagree with putting the page numbers in the middle of the page rather the sides
as I haven't seen many magazines with the page numbers in the lower middle. I also disagree
with having put the magazine name and article name at the top of the page.
16. Peer Feedback Summary
Having read and thought upon the peer feedback I would maybe like to change my final product
a little. Firstly I would start by adding age ratings to the individual anime as all the anime
included isn't family friendly and meant for a more mature audience. I would also maybe add an
overall age rating to the front cover too make sure that any parents don’t get mistaken and buy
it for the young children. I think I would’ve liked to write more of the articles myself other then
the Studio Ghibli 4 page article. This would’ve made my magazine feel more personal and
accurate to my own opinions about the anime.
