Project proposal title and date:
The name I have currently given my portfolio is ‘City Ruin’, however this might change later
throughout production. I decided to call my portfolio ‘City Ruins’ as a lot of the images were taken
in my home town of Knaresborough, more specifically Knaresborough Castle as this was a good
location for my photography. This location was good for photography as the castle is very popular
with tourists and the locals which makes a prime shot for interesting things to happen.
Main area of activity:
The medium I will mostly be working in will be photography however I intend to further this by
making a website and booklet if I have time showing all my work. I chose photography as I have a
keen interest in this area and wish to peruse it at university level. As I have photography as my
main area of interest and I have researched photographers such as Joel Meyerowitz, Helen Levitt
and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Rationale:
Throughout the two years that I have been studying media, I have developed a range or skills
mostly directed at print however some film. During the first year I created a range of products such
as a fanzine for the print rotation, a short film for the film rotation and creative video game aspects
for the game rotation. For the final production of the first year I created a video game magazine
which specialised in role playing games such as Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft and RuneScape.
Doing this helped develop my skills with software such as InDesign, Photoshop and illustrator
which will defiantly come in hand when its time for production. However, the second year was
spent complete doing tasks directed at print as the medium. For the first project of this year I
created another fanzine this time just based of the video game franchise Final Fantasy. For the
second project which was client work I created a mascot for my local comic book shop using
illustrator which I only started using for this project. Towards the end of the client work I started
getting bored with the digital aspect of only using photoshop and Illustrator to produce my work so
for my FMP I decided to go for Photography instead and broaden my skill set.
Project Concept:
The concept for my Final Major Project is a black and white street photography portfolio, however
if I have time I also plan to make a website and small booklet displaying my work like real
photographers with information about their images and where you can see/buy them. For this I
have researched photographers such as Joel Meyerowitz, Helen Levitt and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Joel Meyerowitz is a street photographer and portrait and landscape photographer, Helen Levitt
was an American photographer. She was particularly noted for "street photography" around New
York City and Henri Cartier-Bresson was a French humanist photographer who was a master at
using 35mm film and excellent at taking Candid shots. This research will allow me to visually see
what the experts of the genre have achieved and what I should be aiming to do. Joel Meyerowitz
has his own website showcasing his work as well as some books showing his work, I shall be
using this for inspiration when it comes time to make my website and booklet as it allows me to
see how he managed to do it and what it should look like when it is finished.

How will the project be evaluated and reviewed?
For my Evaluation I intend to use peer feedback which shall hopefully be done at college with
fellow student. This will allow me to gain their views and opinions on what they think is good and
what could be improved upon. This will allow me to go back and make and small changes if
necessary. I also intend to get the views of public people, family and friends to also to gain their
views and opinions which I would expect to be harsher than those of my peers and college further
allow me to develop my own personal skills in the future as well as my current work.
