2. Research
Personally I think the research was my weakest point in the client project. I believe
this to be because it was hard for me to find the relevant information I was looking
for such as my demographic and the demographic of my local town where the shop
was located. The problem with comic books is that it’s a lot harder to find this
information I was looking for as comic books lately aren’t just male dominated as
they used to be in the early 2000’s and 1990’s so I thought I would have the make
the clients eventual project more gender natural than male sided.
I did manage to find some local information about my town such as the race of the
locals as well as their religion and native language. However the problem with this
information is that its very old from 2009, if this information was a lot newer and
more relevant I would believe the results to be a lot more wide spread and
different from what they were back in 2009.
I also managed to find some information about comic books reader however this
was a lot older information too but I still found this useful as I told me that 57% of
comic books were bought by 13-29 year olds. Using this information I decided to
set my target audience at 13-29 year olds which I think I successfully managed to
do to an extent with my terrible time management.
3. Planning
Overall I think that the planning was the more successful aspect of the client
project as I believe I chose and developed some good ideas which under better
circumstances would’ve turned out a lot better than the final outcome. In planning
I came up with three very good ideas, those three being: a mascot, promotional
material and updated websites/Social media. Out of those three I decided to go
with the idea I thought would come out the best and that idea was the mascot. I
then further developed this idea by creating a mind map of all the different ideas I
could do such as the genre of the mascot, colours, weapons/items and how
friendly/scary I wanted the mascot to be. I also started to create a mood board of
sorts to add design and animation inspiration such as what style I wanted to go for.
At the end I chose to got old school by using inspiration such as the Jetsons and
Fleischer studios who are responsible for Popeye, Betty Boop and many others.
For the final part of planning I picked out a selection of aspects I liked and drew my
initial designs on paper before choosing my final design. I think this was a wise idea
as it minimalised the time it would’ve taken me to start my drawing on illustrator.
4. Time Management
During the 4 weeks of production, my time management didn’t really go
according to plan. This was mostly due to mental health issues and well as
physical health issues. I struggled a lot to get the work done on time and it
didn't come out as well as I would’ve hoped it would. I know if things were
better my work would have come out a lot better and more detailed but
the final pieces I made were not done to the best of my ability. I planned to
make two mascots and a few smaller pieces towards of the end of
production but I sent mostly all 4 weeks on the two mascots which do not
look as good I as planned them to. If I were to redo this project I think id
change the idea from mascots to creating some promotional material for
my client. Even though I did manage to make two mascots they look cheap
and this was mostly because I only recently started to learn Adobe
illustrator which I wish I had more skill and time developing my technique
on before choosing to do something as hard as creating two mascots from
nothing but shapes and layers.
5. Emotional
Emotionally this project took a large toll on me as I had to change my client a few weeks in due to
problems finding a client. As well as my poor time management and other health issues pilling up
the work failed to get done on time which put me behind on every step of this project. Overall I was
disappointed in my self as well as my skills when the final mascots were created as I was unhappy
with the way they looked. If I had more time or I were to redo this project there would be a lot of
changes from my idea to the way to researched and planned the project. Instead of struggling to
make two mascots I would either concentrate on just one mascot or change the whole idea to the
promotional information as I believe that would’ve been better suited to my skill set and talents. I
think the main problem was due to my lack of motivation for this project due to my mental and
physical issues at the time, I believe that if I were in a better place at the time of this project the
work would’ve been a lot better and a lot more professional.
6. Aesthetic qualities
Aesthetically I believe I achieved the look I was going for based on my
inspiration of the Jetsons and Fleischer studios however I was unhappy
with myself as I knew I could do better. The first mascot looks a lot better
than the alien mascot which is the one I’m least proud of. The layering on
the alien mascot as you can see didn’t work as well as I planned. As you
can see, the body of the alien is a complete copy of my astronaut which I
think is one of the main reasons I don’t like it. Another problem with the
alien being the fact its just so basic and easy and used minimal time and
skill.
Like I said previously, If I were to do this project again I would scrap the
alien completely and use the astronaut to make more promotional
material such as posters and leaflets using the astronaut mascot. I think
this would’ve been a lot better for my client as well as for myself as my
skills are more suited for that.
