Introduction:
The part of speech indicates how
the word functions in meaning as
well as grammatically within the
sentence.
Importance of Parts of Speech:
The different parts of speech is important in
understanding how words can and should be
joined together to make sentences that are
both grammatically correct and readable.
Types
of
Parts of Speech:
Noun
Adverb
ConjunctionPreposition

Speech
1) Noun:
A noun is a naming word. It can be the name of a
thing, place, person or animal.
Examples :
1)Jenny is my sister.
2)I love to play with my dog.
3)I live in Australia.
2) Pronoun:
The words that can be used instead of a noun are called
pronouns. The pronoun refers to its antecedent. A pronoun
helps us avoid unnecessary repetition in our writing and
speech.
Examples : Tony is a good boy. Tony loves to
study.
Instead of Tony we can use 'he'.
Now read these sentences again:
Tony is a good boy. He loves to
3) Verb:
The word 'verb' derived from the Latin word 'verbum'. A verb is a
doing word that shows an action and a state. a verb is a word that
informs about an action, an existence of something or an
occurrence. The verb is the main word in a sentence. No
sentence can be completed without a verb.
Examples :
1)The dog ran across the yard.
2)Anthony is throwing the football.
3)She accepted the job offer.
4) Adjective:
An adjectives are used to identify individual people and unique
things, they are usually positioned before
the noun or pronoun that they modify.
Examples :
1)The dog Chased the car.
The big dog chased the car.
2)This is a car.
This is a blue car.
5) Adverb:
An adverb is a word/a set of words that modifies verbs, adjective, and
other adverbs. It tells when, where, and how an action is performed or
indicates the quality or degree of the action.
Examples :
1)She slammed the door.
She angrily slammed the door.
2)My mother cook meal.
My mother cook delicious meal.
6) Preposition:
A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns or phrases
to other words within a sentence. They act to connect the people,
objects, time and locations of a sentence. Prepositions are
usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front
of nouns.
Examples : 1)We will not leave before 3pm
2)I was born on July 4th, 1996.
3)I lived in France
7) Conjunction:
Conjunction is a word that connects or joins clauses, words,
phrases together in a sentence. Conjunctions are used to
coordinate words in a sentence. Conjunctions are used as
single words or in pairs.
Examples :
1)She bought a book and pen.
2)Would you like tea or coffee?
3)I sent him a letter but he didn't respond
8) Interjection:
An interjection is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses
emotion, meaning, or feeling. These emotion words proceed
punctuation marks, which are most often but not always
exclamation points.
Examples :
1)Whoa, this city view is amazing!
2)Wow! What a beautiful car!
3)Ouch! It hurts!
