Case Analysis Of Ritter V. Auntie Ruth s Furry Friends
Case Law Analysis Case Summary
In a perfect world, there would be no need for laws protecting people from employment
discrimination; however, in this often unjust world, discrimination continues. Hence, federal and state
protections exist for certain groups of people sharing common characteristics. Some of these protected
classes are race, religion or creed, gender, and disability (EEOC, 2015). In the legal case of Ritter v.
Auntie Ruth s Furry Friends (ARFF), Ritter claimed she became the target of age discrimination after
the business was sold to two people under the age of thrty. The following is an overview of the case
that highlights how ignorance of or willful disregard of the rights of others can be a costly mistake.
While laws are unlikely to change the minds of those who seek to discriminate, those breaking the law
must be held accountable.
Case Summary
In the above referenced case, Ritter, the appellant, began her employment as the general manager at
the boarding kennel approximately one year prior to the sale of the business. In 2012, the business
changed ownership to Annie Haubenhofer and Mike McKinley. Upon taking ownership, they required
all current employees to reapply for their jobs. AARF rehired all of the existing employees, including
Ritter, subject to a 90 day probationary period. As general manager, Ritter informed Haubenhofer that

This means that people that were not able to afford the products can now buy them causing an increase
of sales in The United States, Mexico and Canada. No tariffs allowed businesses to compete in the
world marketplace to expand and deliver customer goods. Big manufacturing companies saw that the
cheap labor was available in Mexico and moved their manufacturing companies. Many of these
companies had unions and the unions were negotiating for higher wages. This could have caused a
company to go bankrupt or invest in machines (robots) to replace people. This in turn led to
manufacturing companies moving to Mexico in order to make profit and continue lower prices. As a
business owner I would agree that just keeping a company afloat is not good business. Profits need to
be met or company can go bankrupt and jobs will be lost. Many people lost their jobs due
manufacturing companies moving to Mexico for profit. About 700,000 jobs were lost in the United
States with 55,000 being in Texas. Pg 18. Texas Public Policy released a study that El Paso is reported
to be hit the hardest by NAFTA. About 10,000 workers have been effected by the loss of jobs, yet the
El Paso region has an increase of exports creating 38,000 jobs since NAFTA . Economic growth is
seen in El Paso. El Paso is growing and seems to be under construction for the last 5 years. The
transportation industry is booming as evident by new businesses being built such as motels and
convenient stores near the main highways. Construction to accommodate the transportation industry
creates new jobs which leads to economic growth. In the last five years of traveling to El Paso and
back to Corpus Christi, no matter the time of day, the highways are busy with big truck/18 wheelers.

Rock N Roll Analysis
I imagine this song to be an upbeat vibe type of rock n roll song. I want to it have an upbeat type of
song because I feel like rock n roll is that type of genre where people back in the 1950s would dance
to and have fun listening to it at concerts. In this song, it would go along with instruments like the
electric guitar, a couple of backup singers, a drummer, an electronic keyboard, a bass guitar, and
possibly a saxophone. For the type of band who would sing this song, it would probably be a band like
Bill Haley and the Comets. I can picture this song sounding something like Bill Haley and the Comets
song Rock Around the Clock with that kind of upbeat fast tempo. This song is about a guy who is
single and walks into a bar on a Saturday

but how does he compare to an always right Shawn Spencer. Holmes, from The Hound of the
Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is a household name. He has appeared in many books, TV
shows, and movies. Shawn Spencer is a detective from the TV series Psych. He works for the Santa
Barbara Police Department and has never failed to catch a culprit. Through Holmes standouts, Shawn
s differences, and the twos similarities, the question is: who s better? Sherlock Holmes is a work of
art, he cannot be copied. Holmes is always very serious as he needs to get his job done. In The Hound
Of the Baskervilles, Holmes interrogates Dr. Mortimer, one of his clients, And you, a trained man of

Black Men and Public Space
Cesar Augusto Gonzalez Professor Hargett English 1101 October 14, 2010 Vicious Cycle Throughout
history, literature has served as a way of expression. Human beings have poured out their feelings onto
paper, as long as there have been people interested in them. Common themes have risen through the
ages, such as the contrast between light and dark. Darkness is known for its negative undertone. In
earlier times, we saw darkness as an interpretation of evil; likewise, light represented God and all
good. From literature we, as a society, have built what later became social rules, giving rise to things
such as prejudice. In Brent Staples essay Black Men and Public Space this is clearly shown by the
authors own experiences of antipathy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fear is accompanied by a need for survival. Some animals grow being dominant, creating fear to
control. Other just decide to hide hoping not to be involved into precarious situations. In Black Men

survivor (568). Staples explain that he took the smaller animal path and tries to remain un
recognizable in order for him to have a safer journey around avoiding confrontation. Is easier to hide
that to fight but in the long run that easiness brings other problems, where self blame can evolve to
depression and self depreciation. It comes a time in every man s life when he has to choose between
himself and society. When he has to decide whether to stand on his own or simply hide his true self in
order to escape confrontation, arguments and possible rejection. Most people have a tendency to go
with the flow be just like everyone else. Staple writes, I now take precautions to make myself less
threatening (568). This quote describes the idea previously expressed. He chooses to alter his image to
make his journey safer. In order to add this newer safer self, he must subtract what he was before,
losing his identity. In Staples essay Black Men and Public Space , big issues are explored and

Power Bases Kim Jong Il
Power Bases
Coercive Power: Kim Jong Il
A coercive leader leads through fear and intimidation. The key fundamental in this leadership style is
making your followers aware that their failure will ultimately cause some form of punishment. This
can take many forms and has been demonstrated on many scales through history. Your boss at work
that punishes you with extra work should you fail to succeed at a task is one example. I believe the
most coercive leader in our world today is Kim Jong Il. Kim Jong Il has been the Supreme
Commander of North Korea since 1997. His leadership style was shaped through a strict military
background. His beliefs in himself are somewhat vain to most, but the people of North Korea will

The population accepts him as a member of their family because of the fear he instilled in past
generations. I dare say he went so far with his coercive style that he no longer even needs to be that
way. The people were forced for so long to accept him as their leader and supreme commander that
they no longer have any other thought in their head. He has totally blocked all internet and media
transmissions into North Korea. No news gets in and you can guarantee that very little gets out.
Outsiders are not welcome to visit North Korea unless they are escorted by officials of the
Government everywhere they go. While his coercive style may have shaped his rule in North Korea it
has in some form shifted into a more Legitimate Power. While generations past may have feared Kim
Jong Il the population of North Korea today loves him as their leader. Where some societies look to
religion to fill their spiritual needs, North Koreans look to Kim Jong Il for the same satisfaction. While
he may have had no right to rule in the beginning and his coercive style solidified his position he is
certainly showing Legitimate Power in today s world. It will be a terrible loss for the people of North
Korea when they lose Kim, but at the same time it may be the best thing that ever happened to them.
While their minds are warped from years of coercive abuse they now accept that Kim Jong Il has the
right, by virtue of position, to make demands and expect

The Importance Of Body Shaming In My Life
When I was younger, my dad would constantly tease my siblings and I. He would say he was making
us thick skinned to prepare us for what some people would say to us when we were older. He would
specifically make fun of us about our weight. As we got older, he stopped teasing my siblings but
continued teasing me. He would constantly tell me I was over weight and should go to the gym.
Eventually, it was so frequent and repetitive that I began to believe every word he said. I remember
believing that I could not have fun with my friends because I would need to be at the gym to please
my dad. I hit a low point in my life in which I genuinely believed I was over weight and worthless. I
began buying baggy clothes and in the summer, I dreaded going to the beach with friends or family.
This belief that I was over weight and worthless began to take over my life. I remember believing
ending my life would be a better solution than having to live in my own body. It was not until I started
dating this guy and surrounded myself with caring and loving friends that I began to realize my self
worth. They constantly reassured me that I was beautiful and I should not look to other people for
approval. I was blessed to have them in my life. In our country, body shaming is a real problem. I
constantly see news reports about girls committing suicide because they are bullied about their weight.
I was fortunate enough to be able to meet the people I met who helped me realize my worth. I do not

The Nature Of Justice In The Oresteia By Aeschylus
The Oresteia is a book of plays written by Aeschylus that centers around the myth of the polis. In each
story, the theme of the polis is different. They each want to get revenge or avenge someone that did
wrong to someone that they love or loved. The in this story the polis poses questions as what is the
nature of justice and what are the methods of establishing and maintaining justice on earth. This story
uses the legend of the family Atreus and how he took revenge on his brother, Thyestes, for seducing
his wife. Atreus killed two of Thyestes sons and fed them to him to avenge the seducing of his wife.
This started the chain of events that led to the family thinking that an eye for an eye is the only way to
settle things. It first started off with Agamemnon s father Atreus and his brother Thyestes who is the
father of Aegisthus. During those times, they were contended for the throne of Argos, but during this
time Thyestes seduced his brother s wife and was driven out of Argos. When he came back Atreus had
established himself as the sole king. Thyestes begged his brother for forgiveness and Atreus pretended
to forgive him. Atreus was still upset that his brother seduced his wife and was plotted to avenge that
so he killed Thyestes two younger sons, cooked them, and served them to Thyestes to eat. When
Thyestes found out he was disgusted and horrified so he took only son that he had left and fled from
Argos. This is what started the polis in this story of The Oresteia. To

The impact of colonialism and the missionary endeavor on Ibo society in Things Fall Apart novel
Introduction
Things Fall Apart novel tries to re erect cultural, social as well as spiritual basics of traditional Igbo
(Ibo) existence from the year 1850 and 1900. Conversely, the novel cannot be inferred like truthful
societal and political olden times of Ibo society since it is a work of invented story. However, the
novel describes disagreements and apprehensions in Igbo society. It also depicts changes initiated by
colonial ruling and Christianity. The author asserts that European colonialism operates as a powerful
as well as well built mediator of the change within Ibo society (Achebe, 2000). Additionally,
Christianity attracted the trivial associates of the Igbo society. Igbo and other societies were altered
considerably due to this variety of deal with Europeans. A few societies expanded in dimension and
authority as marketable centers, whereas others go through great losses in the course of slave invasion.
Hostility get higher, and conflict tactics distorted due to the coming of weapons.

most helpful within the endeavor, thereby protecting a paramount place within Igbo society. According

Purgative medicines are cheap in cost but children dislike the taste because of its bitterness. The
researchers came up with this project due to the desire of helping the parents of infected children in
convincing their kids to take good tasting purgative remedy that is cheaper in cost and can be done at
home. The researchers found out that pounded and boiled akapulko seeds are used as an effective
purgative agent. Akapulko is an herbal plant that can be used in curing skin, stomach, lung, and mouth
problems, and is well known for its sudorific, diuretic and purgative characteristics. It can be ingested
without having any side effect or contraindications. The researchers thought of pulvoron, being a
healthy, delicious, and attractive treat for all. The akapulko seeds were consider as extender in place of
the traditional rice crisps, nuts, or nougats in the pulvoron. Established that akapulvoron could be an

Writing Techniques of Emily Dickinson Essay
Emily Dickinson is one of the most interesting female poets of the nineteenth century. Every author
has unique characteristics about him/her that make one poet different from another, but what cause
Emily Dickinson to be so unique are not only the words she writes, but how she writes them. Her style
of writing is in a category of its own. To understand how and why she writes the way she does, her
background has to be brought into perspective. Every poet has inspiration, negative or positive, that
contributes not only to the content of the writing itself, but the actual form of writing the author uses
to express his/her personal talents. Emily Dickinson is no different. Her childhood and adult
experiences and culture form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The controversy surrounding Emily Dickinson is her odd lifestyle and her tendencies to be somewhat
of a recluse. She is sometimes considered abnormal because she does things differently from most
others. She spends much of her life dressed in white and withdrawn from much of society. Of course,
her peers take this negatively, but what they do not understand is that her being so private is more of a
meditation to her, instead of a hiding. She just wants to escape the pressures she feels are normally
required of women. She does not want to be a servant to sick and elderly. She feels she has more
potential for her mind to grow, and those obligations would just be hindrances to her writing
(McQuade 1255). Her childhood and her staying out of society as an adult, along with many other
aspects known and not known, influence her poems and the style in which she goes about writing the
works. Her techniques of writing are completely different from any other writer, whether prose or
poetry. Dickinson composes her phrases by marking them off with a dash, placing a space before and
after. This small maneuver places more emphasis on her impress of the mind in its analysis of
experience (McQuade 1256). Her slant thymes and unique form of expression produces more of an
oddness to the audience.
One of Emily Dickinson s unique forms of writing is her excessive use

The Naked Man of Steel by Angus Taylor Essay
THE NAKED MAN OF STEEL In 2006, Angus Taylor, a South African sculptor, created a giant
carbon steel statue of a naked black man (Froud, 2011). The artwork was named Positive (Fig 1). The
origin and meaning behind this name will be revealed further on in the essay. The statue caused varied
reactions in three different locations, namely on the campus of the University of Potchefstroom, in
front of a Strand apartment block and finally a farm in the middle of the Karoo. There were some
harsh reactions towards the artwork from sections of the White community and some of the Black
community. These reactions led to issues regarding the right to freedom of expression from the artist
and the public. Statues are generally erected and displayed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Woestyn had no concerns as to how it would affect the public, but he realised that the moment it was
erected, it caused a stir (Woestyn 2014). One of the complaints was the size of the artwork 2.6m high
and weighing in at 750kg (Peters, 2006). Some of the criticisms were: It is disgusting. If the owner
likes it so much he should put it in his lounge (Peters, 2006) Why must we Christians be subjected to
this? (Peters, 2006) This is a conservative town and by tomorrow it will probably have underpants or a
robe on it (Leppan, 2006) The latter comment proved to be an apt forecast, because a few days later it
had a nappy tied around its genitals (Peters, 2006). Taylor said, The groin was modelled to the
proportions of the David statue by Michelangelo which in proportion is relatively small (Taylor 2014).
This quote suggests acceptance by the viewers of the David statue, yet the viewers of Positive are
critical. After several complaints, Woestyn could no longer handle the protesting so he removed the
statue (Woestyn 2014). An anonymous blogger on Heldeberg news and Info blog said: No longer will
this statue torment our community, and innocent children will no longer be subjected to seeing the
private parts of this very vulgar statue! (Leppan, 2006). Hence the negative reaction led towards the
second removal of Positive . From this, one can deduce that many people are not comfortable with
nudity.

Comparing Slayer And Metal Music
We cannot speak about Heavy Metal and not discuss Slayer and Metallica. The thrash metal scene has
them to thank for defining the sound of that genre. Both bands are also part of a successful tour known

This article focuses on the stressors that interpreters often face when interpreting in a Video Relay
Service setting. Because of the stress that these interpreters face, this leads to burnout, which is
equivalent to emotional exhaustion. There are many different reasons for the increase of stress in
Video Relay Service interpreting. This article surveyed 424 interpreters who worked, or are currently

severity of stress level from twenty possible stress factors, three questions about the interpreter s

took into consideration the stress that interpreters working in Video Relay Service settings face. Since
Video Relay Services are relatively new, most people do not realize the complexity of this setting.
Interpreters must interpret everything, and some information could be extremely uncomfortable or
personal. The information in the calls could have a negative impact on the interpreter, and be
extremely emotional or go against the interpreter s beliefs. Interpreters also may have to interpret a
911 call, which I never even thought of before. A 911 call is stressful in itself, and the interpreter has
to make sure he or she delivers an accurate interpretation because if they do not, it could be life or
death for the individual needing to make the 911

Promising consumers low cost alternatives to hiring professional legal help with the added self
satisfaction of becoming your own lawyer, do it yourself legal sites have become increasingly popular
for entrepreneurs and first time business owners. But what may seem like a cost efficient way to save
money for your business can potentially harm it instead. Before considering DIY, here are some of the
benefits to consider when hiring an experienced attorney.
Saves Time For a first time business owner, or even for an experienced entrepreneur, you already have
a lot on your plate with trying to run a successful business so becoming a lawyer overnight isn t going
to be a walk in the park. Trying to learn how to read and write legal documents and contracts, on top
of learning the laws and policies you must follow, is going to consume a lot of your time. All areas of
law have their difficulties, so trying to master a difficult field without professional help can lead to
making mistakes, and these legal errors can potentially set you back and prove to be very
inconvenient. An experienced attorney has spent years learning their trade and don t have to bother
with google or trying to decipher legalese phrases. Hiring experienced legal counsel can help save a

King s Injustice In A Birmingham Jail
King writes about the injustices imposed specifically on Blacks, and the need for the United States to
recognize and annul these wrongdoings. In his letter, King is in a Birmingham jail, arrested for
protesting segregation. He wasn t willing to sit on the sidelines of the fight for equality while his
brothers and sisters fought and died for their cause. He was willing to sacrifice everything for this
cause. He responds to his fellow clergymen that called his actions unwise and untimely , usually not
responding to such inquiries, except this specific case, he realized that they had pure intentions and he
felt it his duty to try to help them understand his cause. He has so much passion for justice; it was his
only concern. King

The Limitations of GDP as a Measure of Well Being
The Limitations of GDP as a Measure of Well Being A primary aim of governments economic policy
includes economic development and management. The presence of a growing economy is perceived as
a positive characteristic; with increasing gross domestic product (GDP) being interpreted as positive
sign of social well being (van den Bergh, 2008). Countries with a high GDP have higher taxes paid to
government, who may use those taxes to provide public services such as education and health, which
in turn supports the well being of the citizens. Despite this the measure is often criticized as an
indicator of well being. To appreciate the value of GDP as a measure it is necessary to look at what it
is and how it may be used as well as recognize the limitation of using GDP. GDP is a measure of
economic activity in an economy. The measure can be calculated in three ways, measuring the output
by calculating the value of all the goods and services produced within a country, as expenditure,
measuring the value of all goods and services purchased with in the economy, which will include the
value of exports, but required reduction of imports, lastly the income measure, where GDP is
measured through the level of income generated, mainly through profits and wages (BBC News,
2011). Therefore, the GDP seen measurement of economic activity and since the 1960s there has been
a proliferation of statistics utilizing the GDP, usually on a per capita basis, as a proxy to indicate social
welfare

Explain The Purpose Of An Operating System
Explain the purpose of an Operating System: Operating Systems manage hardware and provide
services for application software; this means that it makes it easier for users to interact with different
software and hardware available on the computer. The most common operating systems are Windows,
Mac OS X, and Linux. While each OS is different, they all provide a graphical user interface GUI a
GUI allows users to click and drag objects with a mouse instead of entering text at a command line.
Characteristics of an Operating System: Multi User allows multiple users to use the same computer at
the same time or different times. The most common and most well known OS that use s multi user is
Windows 7. Multitasking is performing more than one task at the same time, a task being a program.
Multiprocessing is the support of more than one processor at the same time. Applications in a multi
processing system are broken into smaller routines that run by themselves. Multithreading is the
operating system process to manage its use by more than one user at a time or manage multiple tasks
by the same user without having the need of multiple copies of the program running on the computer.
GUI (Graphical User Interface) allows users to click and drag objects with a mouse instead of entering
text at a command line. A GUI uses windows, icons, and menus to carry out commands for instance
opening files, deleting files, and moving files. Main four functions of an Operating System: Control

Latinx Feminist Theory
The term feminism encapsulates a vast variety of topics important to women s rights. Unfortunately,
feminist theory is often talked about within the restrictions of a reproductive binary. Latinx feminist
theory is more than just a reproduction binary. As women of color, Latinx women have historically
been undermined and excluded from social narratives. Latinx women however, challenge various
forms of oppression, such as the perpetuations of sexism, racism, and violence, by sharing their
testimonios to the world a vulnerable yet incredibly strong form of resistance. This specialized theory
addresses many of the barriers that intersect and impact Latinx women on a daily and generational
basis. Evident in my resistance poem, through the use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I demonstrate the importance of allywork to the Latinx feminist theory in stanza six by which I call for
readers to help Liberate not only women, but anyone oppressed. Despite the differences of our
experiences, Latinx feminist theory believes that our differences should serve as an incentive to
establish solidarity towards justice, not another borderland to cross. Similar to the reproductive justice
theory s utilization of the Ubuntu philosophy, the belief in the universal bond of sharing that connects
all humanity (201 RJT) Latinx feminist theory embraces unity as a direct path to the realization of the
left world concept. Furthermore, I emphasize the essentiality of allywork to the theory through the
motif of It begins today/Empezando hoy. The motif functions as a reminder of how vital it is to Latinx
feminist theory to being unified among marginalized groups as a way of creating effective change for

after the agreement settled with NTP, Visto sued RIM for infringement of four patents. And recently

Characters In The Movie Groundhog Day Vs. Happy Death Day
Groundhog Day vs. Happy Death Day Groundhog Day is a 1993 movie starring Bill Murray. It is a
Drama/Romance directed by Harold Ramis rated PG. Groundhog Day was so popular it was even
made into a musical in 2016 composed by Tim Minchin. Happy Death Day, however, is a 2017
mystery/thriller. It is rated PG 13 and is directed by Christopher B. Landon. Although Happy Death
Day is assumed to be just a scary version of Groundhog Day, these two movies have more differences
and similarities in characters, situations, and setting than people might think. The main character of
both movies begin the storyline as self centered people. They are rude and have no concern for the
people around them. The main character from Happy Death Day, Tree Gelbman is a blonde sorority
sister in college. In the beginning of the movie, Tree wakes up, hungover, after getting drunk from a
party the previous night which makes her late to a lecture. This indicates that she is irresponsible and
what most people consider to be the average partying college student. The main character in
Groundhog Day, Phil Connors, is a weatherman who thinks he s above everyone else. In the movie
this character uses sarcasm, irony, and does his best to ignore everyone and live a life of solitude. One
thing these two characters have in common is falling for the people that they thought they never would
in the beginning. Tree falls for Carter Davis, the college student whose dorm she woke up in after the
party. Phil Connors falls in love with Rita Hanson, a news producer who works in the same studio as
him. These Two characters are stuck in incredibly similar situations with very slight differences. They
are both trapped in a time loop that shows some sort of relevance in their lives and they have to do
figure out what they need do in order to move on to the next day. In the beginning they simply think it
s deja vu, but after they realize they will always wake up to the same day, even if they die, they begin
to enjoy immortality and use it to their advantage. In her time loop, Tree Gelbman wakes up to the
sound of university bells in another college student s (Carter Davis s) dorm room after a party. She
walks back to her sorority house,

Critical Analysis On Spanish Horror Films

FEA 460 Spanish Cinema
Final Paper
Critical Analysis on Spanish Horror Films From the late 1960 s to the early 1970 s Spain rose as one
of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining
dictatorship for much of the 20th century, the horror genre of Spanish cinema took awhile to come
together. During the difficult and challenging days of General Franco s regime a limited series of
horror films were produced, mainly for the English market. In the later years under Franco, hundreds
of horror films were released. All were identified for their violence, eroticism, and unrestrained
cinematography. Recently, 21st century Spanish horror films, such as The Devil s Backbone and The
Others, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond horror genre and successfully mix suspense, horror,
and coming of age techniques, during the harsh wartime, using sound, lighting, editing, and innovative
camera work.
After General Franco s regime fell, a new wave of young directors such as Bigas Luna and Pedro
Almodovar basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted
and independent. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the horror
genre in a big way. There have been many box office horror film hits produced outside of Spain with
Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been designed to
appeal to international markets

Auntie Ruth s Furry Friends Case Law Analysis Case Summary In a perfect world, there would be no need for laws protecting people from employment discrimination; however, in this often unjust world, discrimination continues. Hence, federal and state protections exist for certain groups of people sharing common characteristics. Some of these protected classes are race, religion or creed, gender, and disability (EEOC, 2015). In the legal case of Ritter v. Auntie Ruth s Furry Friends (ARFF), Ritter claimed she became the target of age discrimination after the business was sold to two people under the age of thrty. The following is an overview of the case that highlights how ignorance of or willful disregard of the rights of others can be a costly mistake. While laws are unlikely to change the minds of those who seek to discriminate, those breaking the law must be held accountable. Case Summary In the above referenced case, Ritter, the appellant, began her employment as the general manager at the boarding kennel approximately one year prior to the sale of the business. In 2012, the business changed ownership to Annie Haubenhofer and Mike McKinley. Upon taking ownership, they required all current employees to reapply for their jobs. AARF rehired all of the existing employees, including Ritter, subject to a 90 day probationary period. Every author has unique characteristics about him/her that make one poet different from another, but what cause Emily Dickinson to be so unique are not only the words she writes, but how she writes them. Her style of writing is in a category of its own. To understand how and why she writes the way she does, her background has to be brought into perspective. The controversy surrounding Emily Dickinson is her odd lifestyle and her tendencies to be somewhat of a recluse. She is sometimes considered abnormal because she does things differently from most others. She spends much of her life dressed in white and withdrawn from much of society. Of course, her peers take this negatively, but what they do not understand is that her being so private is more of a meditation to her, instead of a hiding. She just wants to escape the pressures she feels are normally required of women. She does not want to be a servant to sick and elderly. She feels she has more potential for her mind to grow, and those obligations would just be hindrances to her writing (McQuade 1255). Her childhood and her staying out of society as an adult, along with many other aspects known and not known, influence her poems and the style in which she goes about writing the works. Her techniques of writing are completely different from any other writer, whether prose or poetry. Dickinson composes her phrases by marking them off with a dash, placing a space before and after. This small maneuver places more emphasis on her impress of the mind in its analysis of experience (McQuade 1256). • 23. The Limitations of GDP as a Measure of Well Being The Limitations of GDP as a Measure of Well Being A primary aim of governments economic policy includes economic development and management. The presence of a growing economy is perceived as a positive characteristic; with increasing gross domestic product (GDP) being interpreted as positive sign of social well being (van den Bergh, 2008). Countries with a high GDP have higher taxes paid to government, who may use those taxes to provide public services such as education and health, which in turn supports the well being of the citizens. Despite this the measure is often criticized as an indicator of well being. To appreciate the value of GDP as a measure it is necessary to look at what it is and how it may be used as well as recognize the limitation of using GDP. GDP is a measure of economic activity in an economy. The measure can be calculated in three ways, measuring the output by calculating the value of all the goods and services produced within a country, as expenditure, measuring the value of all goods and services purchased with in the economy, which will include the value of exports, but required reduction of imports, lastly the income measure, where GDP is measured through the level of income generated, mainly through profits and wages (BBC News, 2011). This indicates that she is irresponsible and what most people consider to be the average partying college student. The main character in Groundhog Day, Phil Connors, is a weatherman who thinks he s above everyone else. In the movie this character uses sarcasm, irony, and does his best to ignore everyone and live a life of solitude. • 31. Critical Analysis On Spanish Horror Films Shannon Stone 12 11 14 FEA 460 Spanish Cinema Final Paper Critical Analysis on Spanish Horror Films From the late 1960 s to the early 1970 s Spain rose as one of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining dictatorship for much of the 20th century, the horror genre of Spanish cinema took awhile to come together. During the difficult and challenging days of General Franco s regime a limited series of horror films were produced, mainly for the English market. In the later years under Franco, hundreds of horror films were released. All were identified for their violence, eroticism, and unrestrained cinematography. Recently, 21st century Spanish horror films, such as The Devil s Backbone and The Others, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond horror genre and successfully mix suspense, horror, and coming of age techniques, during the harsh wartime, using sound, lighting, editing, and innovative camera work. After General Franco s regime fell, a new wave of young directors such as Bigas Luna and Pedro Almodovar basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted and independent. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the horror genre in a big way. There have been many box office horror film hits produced outside of Spain with Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been designed to appeal to international markets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
