China s Effect On Child Labor
Imagine a twelve year old child getting up every morning going to work in a factory instead of
going to school to get an education. Yes this is the reality in China for many young children.
While here is the US many children at the age of 12 are in elementary school, children in China
are working in factory industries making toys and other goods to export out to the US and other
countries. For years, China has engaged in the use of child labor, wagelevels below international
standards, and unsafe ergonomic conditions.
Some facts about China is that they are a communist country and currently the president of China
is Xi Jinping. They have the largest population of people in the world with more than 1.3 billion
people. There was a one child policy per couple in effect and that policy has recently been
amended. A few of their major cities like Dogguan, and Tianjin have been found guilty of child
labor abuse (Asianhistory.About, 2014).
China entered the WTO in December 2001. It had been a long process of negations with the
WTO formerly the GATT. For China this was a big step. The process took about 15 years before
China was accessioned into the WTO. According to an article Free trade it took this long mainly
due to getting the country s politics and policy making process to produce conditions that would
allow them to submit a bid into the WTO and eventually become part of the WTO (Harold, 2008).
Once China became part of the WTO they have tremendous economic growth.

The Importance Of Local Business
Have you ever thought about paying it forward and maximizing the stance of local businesses in the
community?
Well, the Palo Verde Valley Times did. With the news of many businesses closing in previous
months or closing in the coming weeks,it s important to any community, that the residents help do
their part, by keeping the doors of local businesses open.
Hosting its first business mixer at the Emerald Lounge on last Wednesday, The Times welcomed
city leaders, business owners and employees to meet in a comfortable atmosphere and contribute
their ideas on ways to keep the heart and soul of Blythe s economy prosperous.
Enjoying social hour complimented by mixed drinks and snacks, mixer attendees went around ...

In a promotional flyer sponsored by a community co op established by local farmers in the southern
part of the United States, who just recently entreated residents to focus on supporting local
businesses in the area, it reads, buying local is more fulfilling because it enhances the community,
enriches the social community and every dollar spent, generates twice as much income for the local
economy.
Due to several chain stores and restaurants closing, many have alluded to the idea that Blythe
could become a ghost town if businesses aren t replaced, however the community co op said
should residents focus on supporting local business, This gives those farmers [and businesses] a
reason to stay undeveloped. In a Forbes business report, There are more than 28.2 million
businesses operating in the United States as of March 2014, with about 63 percent of new jobs
being created from small businesses. Of these 28.2 million businesses, most are self employed
making up about three fourths of the U.S. s total businesses; they account for the largest share of
net new jobs generated each year and provide some of the most stable employment opportunities in
a community. Meanwhile, approximately half of small businesses survive five years or more. Yet,

A World Without Work By Derek Thompson
In the well loved tale of the three little pigs, three piglets build themselves houses to protect
themselves from the big bad wolf. The first house was made of straw, the second was made of
sticks, and the third was made of sturdy bricks. Unfortunately for the unprepared pigs, only the
brick house was able to survive the huffing and puffing of the monstrous canine; the big bad wolf
destroyed the other two. Just as a house made of weak materials is unable to withstand powerful
gusts, an argument without evidenceis unable to fend off the attacks of logic. This is the case in
Derek Thompson s article, A World without Work, which was published in The Atlantic in July
/August 2015. Challenging modern society s view that the sole purposes of work are to earn
money and boost self esteem, this article asserts that work also plays an important role in holding
together a community. Therefore, Thompson argues, its removal would have many negative
impacts on American society. While A World without Work does provide an interesting
perspective on the nature of work, the author fails to persuade his audience because he does not
clearly define his key terms or provide concrete evidence to support either his main point or his
proposed solution to the problem, thereby leaving his argument as weak as a straw house. In A
World without Work, Derek Thompson argues that in the near future, technology will remove the
need for the American workforce, thus causing a major problem in the

The Quick Service Food Industry
Americans love efficiency, and they love to eat, thus, the reason for the quick service food industry
(QSR). The restaurant industry has been slightly unstable as the economy climbs out of recession,
and families slowly gain income to allow for a night to dine out. As a whole, the restaurant industry
everything from full service to fast foodaccounts for 47% of this year s fooddollar share, while
supermarkets claim the majority, accounting for 53%. Within the restaurant industry, fast food
restaurants were the only sub industry to show positive guest traffic in the first quarter with a .8%
increase, as compared to 2013.
Because QSR is an oligarchy industry a few companies dominate the market: McDonald s, Chick
fil a, Burger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of the companies that have experimented with this concept, they have found success in
frequently changing the deals offered. Moreover, these deals offered by the restaurants
encourage the consumer to purchase more while at the store; same store sales in fast food
restaurants increased 1.6% in January of 2014, and 3.2% by April. Still, the industry is
experiencing pressure from lack of sales, and to counteract this, McDonalds CEO, Donald
Thompson, and CFO, Peter Bensen, announced in April 2014 that the company will be cutting
costs in factors of production, but no specifics were released. Yum! Brand doesn t feel the heat
with their worldwide sales growth of 4% in the 1st quarter of 2014; their brands include KFC, Taco
Bell, and Pizzahut. Other chains are searching for alternatives to expand their companies and
increase profit. Panera Bread and Chipotle have ventured into the catering industry, which at the
fast food level has few competitors. They now offer their products in large quantities for events,
and Chipotle even offers a customizable option no salsa on your burrito, no problem. Chipotle
implemented this idea in January of 2013; as of May 2014 they ve seen comparable sales grow
13.4%. Some chains took an alternative approach to increase sales by selling branded goods; for
example, Dunkin Donuts sells their brand of coffee, as does Starbucks.
Many companies are still healing from the blow of the 2008 recession.

Little Miss Sunshine Analysis
Little Miss Sunshine Essay
Maia Falkner
Little Miss Sunshine , is a film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This film is about a
girl named Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) and her family, on their physical and emotional journey
to a beauty pageant in California. In the film Little Miss Sunshine the important settings that helped
me understand an idea was, backstage the beauty pageant, onstage the beauty pageant and a
contrasting scene on the wharf. These three scenes helped me understand the idea of society s
unrealistic false standards and the intense judgement of those that fall beneath these standards. The
settings backstage and on stage the beauty pageant portray the idea that in order to obtain beauty ,
extreme lengths must be taken. In this setting young girls are stripped of their identity and
objectified. The falseness of the makeup and spray tan automatically creates an air of self doubt and
pressure to reach this unreachable perception of beauty . The setting on the wharf contrasts with the
falseness of the pageant and exposes the idea that judgement is all throughout life and somewhat
inescapable, that essentially life is one big beauty contest.
The first setting that portrays the idea of society s unrealistic standards is backstage at the Little
Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. This setting portrays this idea by showing us an environment in
which the falseness is almost overbearing. The hotel in which the pageant takes place is filled
with young girls being pampered by their mothers, spray tan, absurd amounts of makeup and
over the top costumes. These all represent this terribly false perception of beauty and objectify
these young girls. A downward, mid shot of a girl getting her legs spray tanned by her mother
describes the distorted reality of this situation. The girl s face is out of the shot which is
objectifying her and taking away her the identity. This is followed by a wide shot of Olive and
Sheryl walking through the room showing products and clothes. In this shot, we see a huge contrast
between the materialistic setting and the naturalness of Sheryl and Olive with their ordinary
clothes, natural hair, and pale skin. The mise en scene of the hotel lobby reinforces the

Korsgaard Normative Questions
** The normative question
Korsgaard frames the question that is central to ethics as the `normative question . An answer to the
normative question, in Korsgaard s view must be tailored to address someone in the first person
perspective, since the question arises from the first person perspective.
Korsgaard writes that it is helpful to imagine the normative question as the question that is asked
when moralities demands are difficult:
#+BEGIN_QUOTE
When you want to know what a philosopher s theory of normativity is, you must place yourself in
the position of an agent on whom morality is making a difficult claim. You then ask the
philosopher: must I really do this? Why must I do it? And his answer is his answer to the normative
question.[fn:176]
#+END_QUOTE
Korsgaard uses this idea as a kind of thought experiment to see whether a particular approach to
morality is convincing. In /Sources of Normativity/ she discusses several approaches to morality
and asks whether their answer to the normative question would be `appealing to an agent in this ...

According to a constructivist reading of Kant, morality is grounded in the will or practical reason
and particular moral obligations are constructed by practical reason. The fact that the moral law is
a demand of reason or rationality provides a justification for subjecting ourselves to morality:
moralities demands are rational. At the same time Korsgaard argues that it explains why we are
motivated to act in accordance with the moral law: the moral law is a demand of our own will.
Constructivism is tied to what Korsgaars names the Kantian `ethics of autonomy . The main idea of
the Kantian ethics of autonomy that Korsgaard defends is the idea that morality is not grounded in
something that is external to practical reason or the will, but rather that it is grounded in the will or
practical reason

The Issue Of Substance Abuse Essay
It is well known that any form of substance use can be fatal, but so can a lot of other things:
choking, accidents, health issues, and sheer bad luck. However, there is something special
about substance abuse fatalities from substance use are considered preventable. Take deaths
associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, lung cancer brought on by smoking, or
heart attacks associated with cocaine use. A person could die in a car crash, from lung cancer,
or a heart attack without ever touching alcohol, cigarettes, or cocaine respectively. However,
there is an increase in death associated with these items. The most curious part of this is the legal
versus illegal categorization of substances. According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco
is considered the leading cause of preventable death (CDC, 2016). Yet, not only is it legal, a
person in the U.S. can purchase cigarettes as young as 18, which is three years earlier than the
legal age to drink alcohol. This knowledge leads to questions about addictionand prevalence of
substance use. Besides being readily available and highly addictive, are there other factors in the
use and abuse of legal substances and are they good indicators of illicit drug use? There is clear
evidence to support that children, adolescents, and adults learn and emulate what they see on
television. The American Academy of Pediatrics has done research and come to the conclusion that
the causes of adolescent substance use are

Hezekiah Vs Sennacherib Essay
Sennacherib vs. Hezekiah In both the Taylor Prism of Sennacherib and 2 Kings 18 19, the event
of Judah attacked by Sennacherib is described. However, as both are compared Sennacherib s
story is more boastful and feels to be less truthful because of its boastful nature. They do share
components and allow the study of the people, but both stories differ as well. The one thing that
could help decide the truthfulness of each story is to know what really happened that night. Within
the first paragraph of the Taylor Prism of Sennacherib, praises to Sennacherib fill about half of the
paragraph and the other is about Assur blessing him to be so powerful (p. 112). For the first
paragraph to be about his own power and where it came from hints at the victories described in the
other paragraphs. One component missing is how human Sennacherib should have been. The whole

soldiers without it being mentioned on Sennacherib s side. If Sennacherib saw an angel slaughter
some of his army, he d be singing a different tune about gods. However, something happened for
him to decide to go back to Nineveh. It could have been the tribute, but they still disagree on what

Marian Wright Edelman was born on June 6, 1939. Edelman is an American activist for the
rights of children. Edelman s mother and father who was a Baptist minister taught her and her
siblings that serving in their community was life s duty. Edelman s parents also taught her and
her siblings that poverty nor racism should ever get in their way of trying to achieve something.
The way Edelman was raised was an inspiration to her and she knew she wanted to make a
change for the better in this country. In 1973 Edelman founded the Children s Defense Fund.
The purpose of the organization is to to ensure every child a healthy start, a head start, a fair
start, a safe start, and a moral start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of
caring families and communities. (Wikipedia) In the essay Standing Up for Children Edelman s
purpose is for us the people to treat children right and others fairly regardless of their color or
economic status. Edelman herself is African American. Her thesis is stated directly throughout
her whole essay. Edelman uses forms of patterns throughout her essay to get her points across. In
her essay she asks a lot of questions and then provides us with the answers. She also uses and
quotes the bible to prove and refer back to her points. The reason why I believe she asks us
questions is to get us thinking while were reading and she also wants us to keep her answers into

Why People Have Joint Pain
Why Many People have Joint Pain and How to Help Ease It As people age they begin to feel that
they are experiencing pain in their joints more so than they did during their youth. There can be
many reasons for this pain. Or can it be just a part of ageing. During our youth we don t pay
much attention to how hard we played, what we eat, or if we took vitamins. Our mothers for the
most part were responsible for what we eat, how much sleep we got, and in general how well we
take care of ourselves. As children our bodies are pretty resilient and other than broken bones,
skinned knees, bumps, and bruises pretty much heal and go away without any need or concern
to see a physician. Years ago mothers made sure that we got the proper amount of sleep, which
for the most part once we got to sleep our bodies took care of how much sleep we got all by its
self, for most children that was anywhere from 8 to 10 hours a night if undisturbed. Most
children got a balanced diet, some even got a daily vitamin or eat foods that were enriched in
vitamins such as cereal and milk. A lot of kids ate in the cafeteria at school. Schools did their
best to make sure that the lunches were well balanced. Children for the most part played outside
for recess which usually involved some sort of running, hopping, skipping, or throwing a ball. And

Sweatshop Exploitation And Responsibility Of Sweatshops

Sweatshop Exploitation and Responsibility
Sweatshops were first well known to the public eye when several major corporations exploitation of
workers were revealed during the late twentieth century. Sweatshops generally are factories that
provide workers with socially unacceptable working conditions, especially dealing with clothing
items. With the expanding apparel industries around the world, more and more corporations are
using sweatshop factories to their advantage. Numerous companies claim that they are not
responsible for actions of those factories from which they purchase from because it is not part of
their corporation. However, action needs to be taken by the government and individual
corporations to improve the working conditions in sweatshop factories. Due to the harsh working
environment, insufficient pay, and other factors that cause inhumane treatment of workers in
sweatshops, the US government should improve working conditions for workers, have stricter
regulations on sweatshops, and strive to improve the treatment of sweatshop workers across the
globe. Sweatshop proponents argue that even though sweatshops may not provide the best
working conditions for workers, it at least provides a job for those who are in desperate need of
one. In a way, a sweatshop may even benefit the workers. The money the workers earn from
working in the sweatshop factory may be the deciding factor in whether they have food

Analysis Of The Book Daughter Of Time
Josephine Tey s Daughter of Time is a story that gives the reader a role in being a detective,
filling in Sherlock Holmes s shoes but with a twist. Within the first few chapters we meet Alan
Grant, a famous inspector from England s Scotland Yard. He is confined in a hospital after
sustaining an injury, leaving him immensely bored during his recovery there. Where he would
trace and map out ceiling cracks for hours; after awhile he became acquainted with the nurses
that would come in and out of his room. His actress friend Marta brings printed materials for
Grant to read but he would reject them, the reason is not known. His antsy behavior shows that
he craves a mental challenge. Grant eventually got what he wanted; Marta suggested that he
should try solving an old mystery that no one has managed to solve. She brings him pictures,
portraits of faces from different historical eras. During his recovery, he spends time analyzing the
collection that Marta provides him. It s clear that Grant adopts Carr s and Elton s methodology
into solving this case and without either of them it wouldn t be possible. He came across a
picture of Richard III, who had accusations of killing his two nephews; his Brother Edward IV s
sons. It is evident that Grant takes pride in his skills as an inspector and speculates that Edward III
is not the perpetrator of the murders. From that point he undertakes the task of learning British
history. Finding clues and piecing them together, disregarding

Gender and Power Relations in Browning s Porphria s Lover and My Last Duchess
Robert Browning provides a critical view of gender and power relations in his dramatic
monologues Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess. The dramatic monologue, as S.S. Curry has
written, reveals the struggle in the depths of the soul (11). Browning delves into the minds of
characters to show their conceptions of women and ideas of power. He explores the mental
processes of the characters, and invites readers to question societal ideas of power and gender. The
mental pathologies of the speakers is emphasized, which forces readers to examine the sanity of
their own notions of gender dynamics.

In men, in general, sexual desire is inherent and spontaneous whereas in the other sex, the desire is
dormant, if not non existent, till excited (457). Greg s terminology is extremely power laden.
Spontaneous has the connotation of energy and activity, whereas dormant and victim imply
inactivity. An important concept is the assumption that men, the coarser sex, act on women, the
weaker sex (457).
Like prostitutes, the women in Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess also violate traditional
gender roles. For that reason, the men take it upon themselves to bring the power relation back to
that of convention, where men are bearers of power and have control in relationships. The means
by which this power reversion is accomplished, however, are subject to examination.
Foucault s theories are helpful in understanding Porphyria s Lover. In the poem, the male
character, who is the narrator, perceives himself to elicit a confession from the woman. Inherent in
the idea of confession are power dynamics. Confession is ...a ritual that unfolds within a power
relationship, for one does not confess without the presence (or virtual presence) of a partner who is
not simply the interlocutor but the authority who requires the confession... (Foucault 61).
Confession is a socially constructed process in which it is necessary to have a mediator as well as a
confessor.

The author reiterates how necessary it is to enjoy oneself as much as possible and it is painfully
clear why this constant reminder is necessary. Many students succumb to pressure from family and
peers to settle for stability rather than following their personal dreams. There are quotes throughout
the book from many influential and popular figures like Howard Stern, Oprah Winfrey, Marilyn
Monroe, and Jim Carrey that champion being an individual who is fearless about following a
passion. By including stories and quotations from familiar figures, Combs makes achieving a
dream seem feasible to college students who are aware that it is often much easier to succumb
to fears. By outlining six common fears, the author identifies why some people may be
preventing themselves from reaching their full potential. Action is essential to combating fear
and becoming successful. Specific actions are provided in the book to beat major fears. The author
realizes how easy it is to allow a fear of failure as defined by a 3.0 GPA hold someone back from
following their dream. For this reason, the value of experiences such as internships and study
abroad over grades is extraordinarily essential to developing someone s sense of self worth.

Mary Kay Case Study
Global Marketing Case
Question 1: Is Mary Kay an international firm , a multinational firm , or a transnational firm as
defined in this course and based on its marketing strategy? Why? Mary Kay, Inc. was founded in
1963 by Mary Kay Ash as Beauty by Mary Kay. Mary Kay is a direct sale type of company, with
independent beauty consultants that sell and market Mary Kay products (2012 Corporate Fact
Sheet). Mary Kay Ash operated with the mindset of God First, Family Second, and Career Third,
and always adhered to the golden rule, do to others as you d want them to do to you (Kerin, Et.
Al). Mary Kay, Inc. first entered the global market in 1971 with its expansion into Australia.
Today, Mary Kay is represented in over 35 global markets (2012 Corporate Fact Sheet). Mary
Kay is challenged to ensure brand consistency across the world, despite differences in cultures
from market to market. As such, Mary Kay would be considered a transnational firm. They tie the
similarities between each market together while celebrating the differences in each market. This
strategy allows them to offer Mary Kay s core product lines globally where they re most desired.
In China, one of their most successful markets, Mary Kay applied their existing corporate message
of women empowerment to attract Chinese women that otherwise wouldn t be able to start their
own business. Where China differs from the United States market is in product need. Chinese

Isolation In Ender s Game, By Orson Scott Card
In the novel Ender s Game, Orson Scott Card illustrates how the adults test Ender s intelligence and
ingenuity through isolation and with no morality. Ender is born into a family where he is an
outcast known as a third. In this military paradigm, a third born child is looked upon in disgust and
hatred. This means that Ender is isolated even before he is brought into the world. This is one of
the many elements of isolation Card uses to bring the reader further into Ender s struggle
throughout the story. He has created a paradigm in which the adults use no morality while training
Ender. The adults manipulate him without any compassion because that is how they are supposed
to train the students. Isolation is one of the most powerful tools that the adults use for Ender s
improvement.
In Ender s Game, Orson Scott Card illustrates isolation, the most powerful tool the military uses to
manipulate individuals. It makes it impossible for an individual to depend on others, and that is
why Ender must develop his own resources. Graff talks about Enders isolation and says to one of

What Does The Light Symbolize In The Black Cat
Authors who write literature often put their feelings into their work which can cause us to connect
with how the authors feel sometimes. Authors as well have some sort of past so that often without
thinking write something that can be a symbolize something from their past, so if they had a bad
past then their literature may be tragic or gothic. For example The Black Cat written by Edgar
Allan Poeuses a light and dark theme which can go along with the gothic theme. Light and Dark
symbolize how dark Poe s childhood was since he writes about death, murder, and other gory
storylines. Poe uses light and dark to show the different aspects of the narrators and how guilt can
consume a person. One example of the thesis is the black cat who was in the wall with the corpse
the whole time. The quote for this found on page eight goes like this I had walled the monster up
within the wall so the narrator never noticed when the cat slipped into the tomb with the corpse and
was in the tomb for days. This quote supports the thesis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

here! It is the beating of his hideous heart this means that the guilt has consumed him but before
that he went through so much madness because of the vulture eye that it caused the narrator to
murder the old man even tho he loved the old man. The eye I believe is like a vulture s eye
because I believe that the old man had cataracts causing to have a vulture like eye because vultures
usually have a eye with cataracts. So in conclusion The Tell Tale Heart does represent my

Humanities’ Irrational and its Effects on a Utopian Society
The human psyche is divided into rational and irrational drives. Courtesy of Sigmund Freud, it is
divided into the id, ego, and super ego. According to Freud, although the super ego controls the
other two to present ourselves in a rational state within society, the id often tends to be out of
complete control by the conscious, making it an unconscious action. For Freud, it s the recognition
that the irrational is there, that it must be controlled to take over. Man s aggressive nature does tend
to overpower the mind, leading to irrational actions. Both Freud s Civilizationand its Discontents
and Dostoyevsky s Notes from Underground show how humans are controlled by their irrational
drives and that, as a result, the attempts to create a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Reavers represent Freud s mentioned id, or irrational and aggressive drives. Due to groups such
as the Reavers and the Alliance, civilization trying to improve and create a perfect society will fail
due to human s inevitable ways of acting through their irrational psyche. A utopian society isn t
possible because of this and Freud suggests accepting such a reality with imperfections in its
inhabitants. Underestimated are the powerful forces or irrationalism... [which] would erupt with

Enter Dostoyevsky, an anti government, anti socialist thinker and writer who offers a strong theory
on man s irrational and failures to create a Crystal Palace society. Being exposed to violence, death,
and government suppression through his life, Dostoyevsky was able to write a notable anti utopian
novel. Moving to the discussion of the rational versus irrational thoughts supported by Freud, rather
than viewing humanity as being innately good, Dostoyevsky viewed humans as being innately
depraved, irrational, and rebellious (Perry 682). Like Freud, Dostoyevsky opposed Enlightenment
philosophies of rationality, and believed irrationality was a dominant

The Physics of Basketball Essay
The Physics of Basketball
The more and more I look around I begin to see how physics are integrated into practically
everything that we do. These things would surely go unnoticed without making a conscious
effort to notice them. For example simple things like riding a bike, or driving a car, or playing
catch with a son or daughter. Just as these activities are loaded with elements of physics, sports
are also, especially basketball. Physics play a part in every aspect of the game, from dribbling,
passing, and shooting, to things as simple as setting a screen. First we should take a look at the
elements of dribbling.
Dribbling is all based on conservation of energy and the two different types of collisions, elastic and
inelastic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of this energy is transferred to the other player, but if they are properly setting the pick that
player should not move. Since both players come essentially to rest, we can say that the energy was
lost through and inelastic collision.
Another basic element of basketball is that of passing the ball to another teammate. The physics
involved in this process are velocity, momentum, and impulse. The ball has a mass and when it is
thrown a velocity of the ball in created. From these two parts momentum is derived, P=mv
(Kirkpatrick Wheeler 106). While playing basketball it may be to your advantage to increase or
decrease the momentum of the ball when passing to a teammate depending upon the situation.
When receiving a pass you catch or slow the balls momentum to zero, which is called impulse,
the interaction that changes an object s momentum a force acting for a time interval (Kirkpatrick
Wheeler 107). This is shown in an equation form by, F=P/Dt. By increasing the time over which
you decelerate the ball, you lessen the force (Bill Willis 2001). This increase of stopping time will
make it easier to catch and control the ball.
Impulse is the same concept in many things like the automotive airbag, seatbelts, and landing pads
for high jumpers. All of these are meant to slow the person down over

whether Bram Stoker s main character Draculawas actually inspired by real historical figures.
Although all evidence used in the debate is somewhat unreliable, it can be established that Bram

What was the available transport by land, river or sea? What was the length, security and nature of

soldier, what were they going to eat? What weapons were available? How were they going to be

effectiveness of the army.1
First of all, the most important part of logistics, the sustenance and hydration of the soldiers needs
to be considered. In short what were they going to eat and drink throughout the campaign? The
methods changed quite notably throughout the time period, this having some relationship to the
size of armies, although this will be covered at a later time. The first method of both feeding the
army and drawing the enemy from their fortifications was the chevauchee, essentially an armed
raid, typified by pillage, burning, rape and murder, essentially destroying everything in its path.
An example of this would be Edward III, who ravaged France, both surviving in enemy territory
and also compelling Phillip to fight in open combat. The chevauchee can be seen as an effective
form of feeding small armies, however any great army would have trouble acquiring the sheer
amount necessary for its survival.

br Pilate also represents a great deal more than a murderer. She has a large part of her mother s
spirit in her because although, physically, her mother dies while giving birth to her, part of her
soul enters Pilate, so part of her literally lives in her daughter. Therefore, when Pilate is killed
during the burial of her father, it shows that both she and her mother are tired of life, they have
both lived it to the fullest, and they both want to rest in peace with Pilate s father.

Asymmetric Synthesis Of 13 Diols And Chiral Sulfoxides
Chapter 1 Review on Asymmetric Synthesis of 1,3 Diols and Chiral Sulfoxides 1.1.Importance
and applications of chiral 1,3 diols Optically active 1,3 diols are very important compounds in
asymmetric synthesis, since they represent chiral building blocks for many polyketide derived
natural products, and have frequently been used as valuable intermediates in the synthesis of
drugs and natural products with important biological activity. Such diols have shown promise as
chiral derivatising agents and less frequently as chiral ligands. 1.1.1.As chiral ligands Unlike 1,2
and 1,4 diols, 1,3 diols are less frequently encountered as chiral ligand. A few C2 symmetric
chiral 1,3 diols are known in the literature, none have proved to be very good sources of chirality.
It is important that the diol is conformationally rigid for it to be an effective chiral auxiliary
/ ligand. Chiral 1,3 diols 20 21 were obtained from the yeast reduction products of 2
oxocyclopentane and 2 oxocyclohexane carboxylates and excess MeLi, BuLi or PhLi. These
ligands form titanium complexes 22 with TiCl(i Pr0)3 which are effective catalysts for
enantioselective nucleophilic addition of MeMgCl to benzaldehyde and 1 naphthaldehyde yielding
1 phenyl ethanol and 1 naphthyl ethanol respectively in good enantioselectivities. Recently Matsuo
and coworkers have reported effective use of a chiral 1,3 diol ligand for brГёnsted acid catalyzed
asymmetric reduction of ketones and acyl silanes. 1.1.2.As chiral

Comparison Of The Passage In Fasting Feasting, By Anita Desai
The passage in Fasting, Feasting, by Anita Desai, Arun is out of his comfort zone going to the
beach. Arun from the very start, starts making excuses to not go to the beach. He also, does not
want to be anywhere close to Melanie While they walk to the beach. He complains about the
noises of the wilderness and how horrible they are. He does these things because he does not feel
comfortable in these places he has never been before. He talks about how his hands are sweaty and
his hair on his neck raises. He also, wonders why people live in such close area to the wilderness.
The story says The town may be small and have little to offer, but how passionately he prefers its
post office, its shops, its dry cleaning stores and picture framers to this creeping curtain of
insidious green...(Desai). This complaining about the wilderness is most likely due to the fact that
he has most likely stayed in town most of his stay in America. He has adapted to the town he has
probably only really seen. 2.
The passage from Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv, he uses many examples to prove his
argument that we are separating from nature. He starts it off by talking about how they soon
will be able to decide the color on butterfly s wings and how they can use nature to advertise. The
Nature we all go visit is not real nature it s advertised and is not worth going to. They use parks
and beaches to get there product out there just for some money to keep the area clean and well
kept. It leads into talking about how we she nature from inside a car most of the time not in
person. It talks about how now we don t even need to pay attention to the nature now because we
have gps that guide us to our destination so we don t need to memorize routes. Even people in the
back seat don t have to pay attention anymore as tvs are now in cars to either watch movies or
play games. It says Perhaps we ll someday tell our grandchildren stories...We actually looked out
the car window(Louv). This is a little stretched because most likely kids will still look out the
windows when they don t have a movie playing or they are bored of what they were doing
beforehand. 3.

Skepticism About The External World
Skepticism about the external world is one of the most widely discussed arguments in the history
of philosophy. Barry Stroud defines skepticism as the idea that we cannot have knowledge about
the external world (Stroud, page 1). This conclusion is the result of Rene Descartes Dream
Argument and has been a topic of discussion ever since. No matter how we attack the argument, it
seems that we inevitably arrive at skepticism. In this paper, I will argue that the skeptical
conclusion is true and why it seems to be compelling as a necessary condition for knowledge. I
will describe the Dream Argument and take a look at Moore s promising response to the
conclusion as an inconsistent proof. In the end, Moore s argument for evidence of an external
world will fail to disprove the skeptical conclusion due to its lack of justified belief. Although I am
intuitively inclined to deny the skeptical argument, I cannot logically do so but will argue against
full blown skepticism and explain how mild skepticism is a more approachable route to
knowledge. In our everyday conversation, we do not generally question the validity of small claims
that we make during normal interactions. In Meditation 1, Descartes decides that it is the right time
to reevaluate the foundation of knowledge that he will rest his life upon from that point forward.
He puts in question the things that he thinks he knows for certain. He acknowledges that everything
he knows has been perceived from the senses or through

Pros And Cons Of Anti War Movement
Anti war Movement A.There were few pros to the war. The vast majority of opinions during this
movement were against the war. The United States sided with Northern Vietnam but stated that
though we could help with equipment and strategy, they must be the ones to win, or loose the
war. The US did not inform citizens of what was truly going on, nor why we were being dragged
into this ware. We in many ways fueled this war and should have been held responsible for the
devastation that would ensue. It is important the we realize the true nature of war and don t only
believe that the governments reasons to be in such wars are the full truth. No countries in the
Geneva Agreement that were communist were accepting of free election. If they did, they could
lose power so there was never any intention of democracy. Power is the instigator of war and the
US was one of the biggest examples of this during this time. Coming off of victory in WWII, we
used our political and global power to assert our dominance and push democracy throughout Europe
and Asia. In the future, we... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author of my article was John Kerry. He wrote Vietnam Veterans Against the War. This was
one of the most influential anti war organization. It was also controversial as they had been in
that very war and seen the real impact and devastation it was causing. Six veterans began the
organization but it soon grew to thousands of members. Many protested in anti war marches.
They were the men who truly took this movement to heart. They had had their friends and family
members killed in the war. Many were badly injured themselves. They did not want the medals
that our country had given them. They meant nothing because the war was for nothing. Kerry
was one of these members. He was a well educated young man who wanted to serve his country
so he joined the Navy. He later became a US Senator. His time in the war was one of the key
points he protested when he was a nominee for President of the United

The Types Of Parliamentary Democracies
The two types of Parliamentary democracies are direct democracy, also known as consociational or
consensus democracy, and representative democracy, otherwise called majoritarian democracy
(Dickovick 118 120). A consensus democracy is founded on the principle that the citizens govern
directly and that power is distributed between the executive and legislative branches to prevent and
limit one branch from gaining too much power. An example of a consensus democracyis
Switzerland, as it promotes consensus of the people, and it exhibits the factors necessary for a
direct democracy. Alternatively, a majoritarian democracy is based on the principle of majority
rules, and that power is concentrated and centralized. The United Kingdom is an example of a
majoritarian democracy because it follows the majority rule principle and possesses all the
qualities of a representative democracy. While consensus democracy and majoritarian democracies
are both forms of democracy, the contrasting approaches to democratic rule they engage in
foremost pertaining to the ideas of distribution of political power, causes the two types of
democracy to be diametrically opposite. A consociational or consensus democracy is commonly
used in heterogeneous or plural societies, as a majority rule democracy would be unpredictable and
hazardous in such a society. consensus democracy has its virtues in the front end of democracy. It
emphasizes the belief of the consensus of the people rather than the

The Enlightenment s Era s Most Notable Thinkers
The Enlightenment was a crucial period in modern history for the simple fact that it engendered
some of the thoughts that are directly responsible for contemporary social, political, and religious
institutions. This epoch, along with the Renaissance, helped to spur Western Civilization out of the
Dark Ages and into contemporary conceptions of modernization. Not surprisingly, this time period
is characterized by a number of different seditions and the revolutionary tenets that fueled them
which were markedly at variance with social, political, and religious notions that preceded them.
As these three spheres of life often intersect with one another, there is some degree of difficulty in
isolating their specific causes in terms of respective Enlightenment principles. However, history
has revealed that some of the most distinguishable characteristics of this historical era are its
different ideas regarding the nature of politics and the role of government in ruling over the
people, its new regard for and conception of traditional viewpoints of religion, and a philosophical
divergence with the past in terms of ethics and psychology; a review of the Enlightenment s most
notable thinkers (such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin)
readily confirms this thesis.
One of the central tenets of the Enlightenment that profoundly affected the confluence of social,
political and religious aspects of life is the notion that man was endowed with the power to

Ghana And Its Demographic Profile Over Time
Ghana is a country found along the Gulf of Guinea in the sub region of West Africa in the African
continent. It is bordered to the west by Ivory Coast; to the north by Burkina Faso; to the east by
Togo and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Ghana was the first African country to gain independence from colonization by the United
Kingdom on the 6th March 1957 under the leadership of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah who was the
first Prime Minister as well as the First President of Ghana. In terms of population policies and
programmes which is the subject matter of this paper Ghana was the third country in Sub Saharan
Africa after Mauritius(1958) and Kenya(1967) to adopt an explicit and comprehensive policy on
population in the year 1969.This paper discusses the population policies and programmes of Ghana
vis a vis its demographic profile over time.
Even in the colonial times Ghana was seen as a country with prospects. From about 1945 to
1957 which is after the Second World War Gold Coast was a model colony of the British empire
given that it was endowed with a relatively advanced network of infrastructure and social service
institutions in health and education. These were facilities that had been financed with the
proceeds of a previous cocoa boom in the 1920 s. The cocoa boom was so remunerative to the
extent that the Governor Gordon Guggisberg felt confident enough as to write a long term
development plan for the colony. As early as 1947 the colony

The Horse Dealer s Daughter Analysis
Last Thursday, as we were out at a restaurant eating dinner we discussed D.H. Lawrence s short
story The Horse Dealer s Daughter. We talked about Mabel and her family s past and their present
situations. Surprisingly, you mention to me that you did not understand why Mabel attempts
suicide. This statement shocked me since I could think of multiple reasons that led Mabel to
attempt suicide. Throughout the short storyLawrence gave clues and reasons to why she attempts
suicide. Mabel attempts suicide for the following reasons: To feel closer to her mother, bankruptcy
after her father s death, and because she feels unloved.
One reason Mabel attempts suicide is to feel close to her mother and be with her again. Once her
mother had died, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lawrence explains Mabel s thoughts on how having money made her feel secure and happy. Also,
how no longer having money she no longer feels secure as follows:
For months, Mabel had been [sic]servantless in the big house, keeping the home together in penury
for her ineffectual brothers. She had kept house for ten years. But previously, it was with unstinted
means. Then, however brutal and coarse everything was, the sense of money had kept her proud,
confident. The men might be fouled mouthed, the women in the kitchen might have bad
reputations, her brothers might have illegitimate children. But so long as there was money, the girl
felt herself established, and brutally proud, reserved. (Lawrence 4)
The earlier quote shows how money and housekeeping has kept Mabel satisfied with her life. Now
that her father has died Mabel and her family has gone bankrupt and will lose their money and their
home. Lawrence notes, Now he was dead and everything was gone to the dogs, there was nothing
but debt and threatening (4). Furthermore, Mabel has lost everything that makes her feel secure,
established, proud, happy, and confident. Yes, indeed, Mabel attempts suicide because her family s
bankruptcy caused her unhappiness.
Once Mabel s mother had died Mabel began to feel unloved. In effect of her mother s passing her
father remarried, causing the loving relationship between her and her father to disappear.
Consequently, leaving Mabel feeling alone and unloved by her

Big Two Hearted River Quotes
In the TED Talk with Wes Moore, he said that his mom could not keep up with his behavior so
she sent him off to military school. He didn t have much of a say in it but he was the one whose
actions caused her to feel it was best to send him away. He said he was a troublemaker and on
academic and discipline probation because of the choices he made as a kid. He didn t come from a
militaryfamily, he wasn t a military brat, no one in his family was in the military. His mom thought
it would be a good place to help him change his behavior, and in the 5 years he was there he

He seems so be acting different than many war veterans would. Most veterans are very paranoid

Hearted River is seen as Nick preparing to fish for his food as he takes his pole out of his case
and prepares to set out for his dinner. Nick took his fly rod out of the leather rod case, Joined it
and shorten the rod case into the tent. In the story it seems as if Nick is taking a break from
society and living life freely in the wild and that seems to be a very calming experience and
surrounding for him to be in after his return from battle. In the quote, Nick swung the rod back
over his shoulder and forward and Hyde like curring forward laid the grasshopper down on one of
the deep channels in the woods. Nick shows his fishing and later in the quote it shows the
excitement. He gets after catching the fish as he see it as the biggest trout he has ever

The Clean Power Of The Dominican Republic
Introduction
The Clean Power Company has recently realized that in order to stay in business, they will have
to move the company out of the country to the Dominican Republic. They have already purchased
500 acres of undeveloped land adjacent to the Chavon River. They also plan to build a school to
help with overcrowding and to promote corporate social responsibility with the locals.
Furthermore, as part of the sales agreement, the seller, Teltac Corporation, has agreed to put in
roads, septic systems, and water lines. Teltac, has also informed Clean Power that there should be
no problems running these sewer lines directly into the river as the Chavon River is clean and
large and can absorb the waste. People in the new community feel that this is cause for major
concern.
The Clean Power Company has lots of ethical decisions to make. The two main ethical concerns
that arise if Clean Power moves its company: First, how the move will effect the present stake
holders (i.e. the employees, their families, the business partners of Clean Power, and shareholders
in Cincinnati). The second is the effect that the move will have on the environmental and
community stakeholders of the Dominican Republic.
Legal
It would be unlawful for the any company to dump toxic sewage into the Chavon River, or any
river for that matter, by doing such a thing it puts the new community at risk of disease and illness.
Also, by polluting the river, it will contaminate the local environment and wreak havoc

The Characters Of Antigone And Draupadi
Every religion has a hero in their myth, which can vary in terms of their country. Greece has
more than one hero in their myths which include people such as Herakles and Antigone or in
continuation, a very intelligent and strong person such as India s Draupadi. There are a vast
amount of heroes and anti heroes present in David A. Leeming s The World of Myth, and each
manage to overcome colossal obstacles or leave a legacy in both passive and active manners. For
instance, Draupadi from India is a passive woman throughout the chapter, however at the end she
becomes an active character, and the reader grasps how intelligent and powerful she is after
refusing to be enslaved from the follies of her 5 husbands. On the other hand, Antigone from
Greece is an active herothroughout the beginning, defending her brother s right to be buried as
the law of the gods permit it. Although her death stopped her from being active, her legacy
continued, punishing King Creon for enforcing this immoral law. Both Antigone and Draupadi are
female heroes who have impacted their communities, however, it is accomplished differently
because Antigone is an active character until her death and Draupadi is a dynamic character who
changes from passive to active when she is being gambled. In the beginning of Greece s Antigone
by Sophocles, Antigone is introduced as the brave daughter of King Oedipus and her active
character has a heroic calling to respect religious codes from the gods. For instance, all

Plato s Euthyphro, Socrates And Euthyphro Essay
In Plato s Euthyphro, Socrates and Euthyphro had a conversation about piety. During the
conversation, Socrates raised a question which was a challenge to the Euthyphro s definition of
piety. Also, this question is a challenge to the theists view of divine command theory. I agree with
the arbitrariness objection which succeeds giving a good reason to theists to reject the divine
command theory. This objection indicates that the arbitrariness of Gods commands contradicts to
the fundamental attribute of God, and God s commands are unable to make an act morally good or
bad.
Socrates asked Euthyphro about the definition of piety and impiety. Euthyphro attempted a
couple of times to answer Socrates question, and he finally defined piety as the pious is what all
the gods love, and its opposite, what all the gods hate is the impious (Reeve and Miller 58).
Then, Socrates responded to Euthyphro by asking him a question which was also the challenge;
Socrates asked, is the pious loved by the gods because it s pious? Or is it pious because it s
loved? (Reeve and Miller 58). This question not only gives Euthyphro a challenge to his definition
of piety, but it also challenges the theists view of commands of God. In Socrates question, there are
two interpretations about the commands of God. One interpretation is the divine command theory,
this theory is that whatever god s commands equal to the moral goodness; wrong acts are wrong
because god prohibits them, and good acts are good

Both heroes were rewarded for there obedience. Although the stories are similar they are not
identical. In Genesis God sent the Flood to destroy humankind because of man s wickedness.
Unlike The Gilgamesha where the reason was never said however the sender of the flood was a
secret council of gods the idea was brought up by Enlil , the god of earth wind and air. God
favored Noah because he was a righteous man therefore, he was chosen to build the ark that was
three hundred cubits long, fifty cubit wide, and thirty cubits high, about three stories.
Utnapishtim was chosen out of the cleverness of Ea, the god of wisdom and crafts. God came
directly to Noah to tell him about the Flood where as Ea was swore to secrecy so he repeated
their plans to the reed fence so he would no break the oath to the group. The boat Utnapishtim
was directed to build was a rectangle shaped measuring one acre and about 6 stories high. When
the floor came in Gilgamesh it was only rainwater however the Flood in Genesis was rain water
as well as ground water. Both floods did indeed wipe out all of humankind but the did not last
equal as long. After the flood Utnapishtim was gifted the gift of eternal life where as Noah was to
multiply and have rule over the animals. The relationship between humans to Divinity based on the

  • 2. China s Effect On Child Labor Imagine a twelve year old child getting up every morning going to work in a factory instead of going to school to get an education. Yes this is the reality in China for many young children. While here is the US many children at the age of 12 are in elementary school, children in China are working in factory industries making toys and other goods to export out to the US and other countries. For years, China has engaged in the use of child labor, wagelevels below international standards, and unsafe ergonomic conditions. Some facts about China is that they are a communist country and currently the president of China is Xi Jinping. They have the largest population of people in the world with more than 1.3 billion people. There was a one child policy per couple in effect and that policy has recently been amended. A few of their major cities like Dogguan, and Tianjin have been found guilty of child labor abuse (Asianhistory.About, 2014). China entered the WTO in December 2001. It had been a long process of negations with the WTO formerly the GATT. For China this was a big step. The process took about 15 years before China was accessioned into the WTO. According to an article Free trade it took this long mainly due to getting the country s politics and policy making process to produce conditions that would allow them to submit a bid into the WTO and eventually become part of the WTO (Harold, 2008). Once China became part of the WTO they have tremendous economic growth. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With the news of many businesses closing in previous months or closing in the coming weeks,it s important to any community, that the residents help do their part, by keeping the doors of local businesses open. Hosting its first business mixer at the Emerald Lounge on last Wednesday, The Times welcomed city leaders, business owners and employees to meet in a comfortable atmosphere and contribute their ideas on ways to keep the heart and soul of Blythe s economy prosperous. Due to several chain stores and restaurants closing, many have alluded to the idea that Blythe could become a ghost town if businesses aren t replaced, however the community co op said should residents focus on supporting local business, This gives those farmers [and businesses] a reason to stay undeveloped. • 5. A World Without Work By Derek Thompson In the well loved tale of the three little pigs, three piglets build themselves houses to protect themselves from the big bad wolf. The first house was made of straw, the second was made of sticks, and the third was made of sturdy bricks. Unfortunately for the unprepared pigs, only the brick house was able to survive the huffing and puffing of the monstrous canine; the big bad wolf destroyed the other two. Just as a house made of weak materials is unable to withstand powerful gusts, an argument without evidenceis unable to fend off the attacks of logic. This is the case in Derek Thompson s article, A World without Work, which was published in The Atlantic in July /August 2015. Challenging modern society s view that the sole purposes of work are to earn money and boost self esteem, this article asserts that work also plays an important role in holding together a community. Therefore, Thompson argues, its removal would have many negative impacts on American society. While A World without Work does provide an interesting perspective on the nature of work, the author fails to persuade his audience because he does not clearly define his key terms or provide concrete evidence to support either his main point or his proposed solution to the problem, thereby leaving his argument as weak as a straw house. In A World without Work, Derek Thompson argues that in the near future, technology will remove the need for the American workforce, thus causing a major problem in the ... • 6. The Quick Service Food Industry Americans love efficiency, and they love to eat, thus, the reason for the quick service food industry (QSR). The restaurant industry has been slightly unstable as the economy climbs out of recession, and families slowly gain income to allow for a night to dine out. As a whole, the restaurant industry everything from full service to fast foodaccounts for 47% of this year s fooddollar share, while supermarkets claim the majority, accounting for 53%. Within the restaurant industry, fast food restaurants were the only sub industry to show positive guest traffic in the first quarter with a .8% increase, as compared to 2013. Of the companies that have experimented with this concept, they have found success in frequently changing the deals offered. Moreover, these deals offered by the restaurants encourage the consumer to purchase more while at the store; same store sales in fast food restaurants increased 1.6% in January of 2014, and 3.2% by April. Still, the industry is experiencing pressure from lack of sales, and to counteract this, McDonalds CEO, Donald Thompson, and CFO, Peter Bensen, announced in April 2014 that the company will be cutting costs in factors of production, but no specifics were released. Yum! Brand doesn t feel the heat with their worldwide sales growth of 4% in the 1st quarter of 2014; their brands include KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizzahut. Other chains are searching for alternatives to expand their companies and increase profit. Panera Bread and Chipotle have ventured into the catering industry, which at the fast food level has few competitors. They now offer their products in large quantities for events, and Chipotle even offers a customizable option no salsa on your burrito, no problem. Chipotle implemented this idea in January of 2013; as of May 2014 they ve seen comparable sales grow 13.4%. Some chains took an alternative approach to increase sales by selling branded goods; for example, Dunkin Donuts sells their brand of coffee, as does Starbucks. • 8. Little Miss Sunshine Analysis Little Miss Sunshine Essay Maia Falkner Little Miss Sunshine , is a film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This film is about a girl named Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) and her family, on their physical and emotional journey to a beauty pageant in California. In the film Little Miss Sunshine the important settings that helped me understand an idea was, backstage the beauty pageant, onstage the beauty pageant and a contrasting scene on the wharf. These three scenes helped me understand the idea of society s unrealistic false standards and the intense judgement of those that fall beneath these standards. The settings backstage and on stage the beauty pageant portray the idea that in order to obtain beauty , extreme lengths must be taken. In this setting young girls are stripped of their identity and objectified. The falseness of the makeup and spray tan automatically creates an air of self doubt and pressure to reach this unreachable perception of beauty . The setting on the wharf contrasts with the falseness of the pageant and exposes the idea that judgement is all throughout life and somewhat inescapable, that essentially life is one big beauty contest. The first setting that portrays the idea of society s unrealistic standards is backstage at the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. This setting portrays this idea by showing us an environment in which the falseness is almost overbearing. The hotel in which the pageant takes place is filled with young girls being pampered by their mothers, spray tan, absurd amounts of makeup and over the top costumes. These all represent this terribly false perception of beauty and objectify these young girls. A downward, mid shot of a girl getting her legs spray tanned by her mother describes the distorted reality of this situation. The girl s face is out of the shot which is objectifying her and taking away her the identity. This is followed by a wide shot of Olive and Sheryl walking through the room showing products and clothes. In this shot, we see a huge contrast between the materialistic setting and the naturalness of Sheryl and Olive with their ordinary clothes, natural hair, and pale skin. The mise en scene of the hotel lobby reinforces the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Korsgaard Normative Questions ** The normative question Korsgaard frames the question that is central to ethics as the `normative question . An answer to the normative question, in Korsgaard s view must be tailored to address someone in the first person perspective, since the question arises from the first person perspective. Korsgaard writes that it is helpful to imagine the normative question as the question that is asked when moralities demands are difficult: #+BEGIN_QUOTE When you want to know what a philosopher s theory of normativity is, you must place yourself in the position of an agent on whom morality is making a difficult claim. You then ask the philosopher: must I really do this? Why must I do it? And his answer is his answer to the normative question.[fn:176] #+END_QUOTE Korsgaard uses this idea as a kind of thought experiment to see whether a particular approach to morality is convincing. In /Sources of Normativity/ she discusses several approaches to morality and asks whether their answer to the normative question would be `appealing to an agent in this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to a constructivist reading of Kant, morality is grounded in the will or practical reason and particular moral obligations are constructed by practical reason. The fact that the moral law is a demand of reason or rationality provides a justification for subjecting ourselves to morality: moralities demands are rational. At the same time Korsgaard argues that it explains why we are motivated to act in accordance with the moral law: the moral law is a demand of our own will. Constructivism is tied to what Korsgaars names the Kantian `ethics of autonomy . The main idea of the Kantian ethics of autonomy that Korsgaard defends is the idea that morality is not grounded in something that is external to practical reason or the will, but rather that it is grounded in the will or practical reason ... • 12. The Issue Of Substance Abuse Essay It is well known that any form of substance use can be fatal, but so can a lot of other things: choking, accidents, health issues, and sheer bad luck. However, there is something special about substance abuse fatalities from substance use are considered preventable. Take deaths associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, lung cancer brought on by smoking, or heart attacks associated with cocaine use. A person could die in a car crash, from lung cancer, or a heart attack without ever touching alcohol, cigarettes, or cocaine respectively. However, there is an increase in death associated with these items. The most curious part of this is the legal versus illegal categorization of substances. According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco is considered the leading cause of preventable death (CDC, 2016). Yet, not only is it legal, a person in the U.S. can purchase cigarettes as young as 18, which is three years earlier than the legal age to drink alcohol. This knowledge leads to questions about addictionand prevalence of substance use. Besides being readily available and highly addictive, are there other factors in the use and abuse of legal substances and are they good indicators of illicit drug use? There is clear evidence to support that children, adolescents, and adults learn and emulate what they see on television. The American Academy of Pediatrics has done research and come to the conclusion that the causes of adolescent substance use are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Hezekiah Vs Sennacherib Essay Sennacherib vs. Hezekiah In both the Taylor Prism of Sennacherib and 2 Kings 18 19, the event of Judah attacked by Sennacherib is described. However, as both are compared Sennacherib s story is more boastful and feels to be less truthful because of its boastful nature. They do share components and allow the study of the people, but both stories differ as well. The one thing that could help decide the truthfulness of each story is to know what really happened that night. Within the first paragraph of the Taylor Prism of Sennacherib, praises to Sennacherib fill about half of the paragraph and the other is about Assur blessing him to be so powerful (p. 112). For the first paragraph to be about his own power and where it came from hints at the victories described in the other paragraphs. One component missing is how human Sennacherib should have been. If Sennacherib saw an angel slaughter some of his army, he d be singing a different tune about gods. However, something happened for him to decide to go back to Nineveh. It could have been the tribute, but they still disagree on what was in the tribute. The Hebrew version mentions nothing of Hezekiah losing his daughters or his harem, and to go to battle and to stop only after getting a tribute sounds lack luster. Edelman s mother and father who was a Baptist minister taught her and her siblings that serving in their community was life s duty. Edelman s parents also taught her and her siblings that poverty nor racism should ever get in their way of trying to achieve something. The way Edelman was raised was an inspiration to her and she knew she wanted to make a change for the better in this country. In 1973 Edelman founded the Children s Defense Fund. The purpose of the organization is to to ensure every child a healthy start, a head start, a fair start, a safe start, and a moral start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. (Wikipedia) In the essay Standing Up for Children Edelman s purpose is for us the people to treat children right and others fairly regardless of their color or economic status. Edelman herself is African American. Her thesis is stated directly throughout her whole essay. Edelman uses forms of patterns throughout her essay to get her points across. In her essay she asks a lot of questions and then provides us with the answers. She also uses and quotes the bible to prove and refer back to her points. • 18. Why People Have Joint Pain Why Many People have Joint Pain and How to Help Ease It As people age they begin to feel that they are experiencing pain in their joints more so than they did during their youth. There can be many reasons for this pain. Or can it be just a part of ageing. During our youth we don t pay much attention to how hard we played, what we eat, or if we took vitamins. Our mothers for the most part were responsible for what we eat, how much sleep we got, and in general how well we take care of ourselves. As children our bodies are pretty resilient and other than broken bones, skinned knees, bumps, and bruises pretty much heal and go away without any need or concern to see a physician. Years ago mothers made sure that we got the proper amount of sleep, which for the most part once we got to sleep our bodies took care of how much sleep we got all by its self, for most children that was anywhere from 8 to 10 hours a night if undisturbed. Most children got a balanced diet, some even got a daily vitamin or eat foods that were enriched in vitamins such as cereal and milk. A lot of kids ate in the cafeteria at school. Schools did their best to make sure that the lunches were well balanced. Children for the most part played outside for recess which usually involved some sort of running, hopping, skipping, or throwing a ball. Sweatshop Exploitation And Responsibility Of Sweatshops Gabrielle Chan Bass Humanities 3rd Blue 12 November 2014 Sweatshop Exploitation and Responsibility Sweatshops were first well known to the public eye when several major corporations exploitation of workers were revealed during the late twentieth century. Sweatshops generally are factories that provide workers with socially unacceptable working conditions, especially dealing with clothing items. With the expanding apparel industries around the world, more and more corporations are using sweatshop factories to their advantage. Numerous companies claim that they are not responsible for actions of those factories from which they purchase from because it is not part of their corporation. However, action needs to be taken by the government and individual corporations to improve the working conditions in sweatshop factories. Due to the harsh working environment, insufficient pay, and other factors that cause inhumane treatment of workers in sweatshops, the US government should improve working conditions for workers, have stricter regulations on sweatshops, and strive to improve the treatment of sweatshop workers across the globe. Sweatshop proponents argue that even though sweatshops may not provide the best working conditions for workers, it at least provides a job for those who are in desperate need of one. In a way, a sweatshop may even benefit the workers. The money the workers earn from working in the sweatshop factory may be the deciding factor in whether they have food ... • 20. Analysis Of The Book Daughter Of Time Josephine Tey s Daughter of Time is a story that gives the reader a role in being a detective, filling in Sherlock Holmes s shoes but with a twist. Within the first few chapters we meet Alan Grant, a famous inspector from England s Scotland Yard. He is confined in a hospital after sustaining an injury, leaving him immensely bored during his recovery there. Where he would trace and map out ceiling cracks for hours; after awhile he became acquainted with the nurses that would come in and out of his room. His actress friend Marta brings printed materials for Grant to read but he would reject them, the reason is not known. His antsy behavior shows that he craves a mental challenge. Grant eventually got what he wanted; Marta suggested that he should try solving an old mystery that no one has managed to solve. She brings him pictures, portraits of faces from different historical eras. During his recovery, he spends time analyzing the collection that Marta provides him. It s clear that Grant adopts Carr s and Elton s methodology into solving this case and without either of them it wouldn t be possible. He came across a picture of Richard III, who had accusations of killing his two nephews; his Brother Edward IV s sons. It is evident that Grant takes pride in his skills as an inspector and speculates that Edward III is not the perpetrator of the murders. From that point he undertakes the task of learning British history. Finding clues and piecing them together, disregarding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Gender and Power Relations in Browning’s Porphria’s Lover... Gender and Power Relations in Browning s Porphria s Lover and My Last Duchess Robert Browning provides a critical view of gender and power relations in his dramatic monologues Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess. The dramatic monologue, as S.S. Curry has written, reveals the struggle in the depths of the soul (11). Browning delves into the minds of characters to show their conceptions of women and ideas of power. He explores the mental processes of the characters, and invites readers to question societal ideas of power and gender. The mental pathologies of the speakers is emphasized, which forces readers to examine the sanity of their own notions of gender dynamics. In the Victorian age, the idea of separate... Greg s terminology is extremely power laden. Spontaneous has the connotation of energy and activity, whereas dormant and victim imply inactivity. An important concept is the assumption that men, the coarser sex, act on women, the weaker sex (457). Like prostitutes, the women in Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess also violate traditional gender roles. For that reason, the men take it upon themselves to bring the power relation back to that of convention, where men are bearers of power and have control in relationships. The means by which this power reversion is accomplished, however, are subject to examination. Foucault s theories are helpful in understanding Porphyria s Lover. In the poem, the male character, who is the narrator, perceives himself to elicit a confession from the woman. Inherent in the idea of confession are power dynamics. Confession is ...a ritual that unfolds within a power relationship, for one does not confess without the presence (or virtual presence) of a partner who is not simply the interlocutor but the authority who requires the confession... There are quotes throughout the book from many influential and popular figures like Howard Stern, Oprah Winfrey, Marilyn Monroe, and Jim Carrey that champion being an individual who is fearless about following a passion. By including stories and quotations from familiar figures, Combs makes achieving a dream seem feasible to college students who are aware that it is often much easier to succumb to fears. By outlining six common fears, the author identifies why some people may be preventing themselves from reaching their full potential. Action is essential to combating fear and becoming successful. Specific actions are provided in the book to beat major fears. The author realizes how easy it is to allow a fear of failure as defined by a 3.0 GPA hold someone back from following their dream. For this reason, the value of experiences such as internships and study abroad over grades is extraordinarily essential to developing someone s sense of self worth. Experiences ... These things would surely go unnoticed without making a conscious effort to notice them. For example simple things like riding a bike, or driving a car, or playing catch with a son or daughter. Just as these activities are loaded with elements of physics, sports are also, especially basketball. Physics play a part in every aspect of the game, from dribbling, passing, and shooting, to things as simple as setting a screen. First we should take a look at the elements of dribbling. Dribbling is all based on conservation of energy and the two different types of collisions, elastic and inelastic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of this energy is transferred to the other player, but if they are properly setting the pick that player should not move. Since both players come essentially to rest, we can say that the energy was lost through and inelastic collision. Another basic element of basketball is that of passing the ball to another teammate. The physics involved in this process are velocity, momentum, and impulse. The ball has a mass and when it is thrown a velocity of the ball in created. From these two parts momentum is derived, P=mv (Kirkpatrick Wheeler 106). While playing basketball it may be to your advantage to increase or decrease the momentum of the ball when passing to a teammate depending upon the situation. When receiving a pass you catch or slow the balls momentum to zero, which is called impulse, the interaction that changes an object s momentum a force acting for a time interval (Kirkpatrick Wheeler 107). This is shown in an equation form by, F=P/Dt. By increasing the time over which you decelerate the ball, you lessen the force (Bill Willis 2001). Sun Tzu Theory Essay The Relevancy of Sun Tzu s Theory for XXI Century Is the Sun Tzu s theory of war relevant for the nature and character of XXI century wars, despite the finding that, most probably, the author wrote it more than 2500 years ago in his famous treatise, The Art of War? This complex question becomes more important if we take into consideration the age of his ideas and difference in character of wars fought in the current century and those fought before that. However, the question becomes less complex if we approach it in a way that implies distinction between the character of the wars and their nature. In other words, while setting up the strategy for the war a statesman has to determine clear and attainable objective before the war starts. Tzu suggests priorities in choosing military objectives putting the attacking enemy s strategy on a first place. The second and third place, are reserved for the disrupting enemy s alliances and attacking his military, respectively. Attacking the enemy s military was his last choice because he considered a war as not only a military affairs, but a matter of politics, diplomacy, economy, climate and geography. In attacking enemy s military, he suggested not to put a premium on killing , but on enemy s cohesion and his will to fight. Also, Milkman s paternal aunt, Pilate, has an extremely significannot and symbolic role in the novel. To her father, she represents the child who killed her own mother and took away her father s wife. Seeing that Pontius Pilatesentenced Jesusto death, the name Pilate seems to coincide with her father, Macon Dead s, opinion. It is the character and the name of Milkman Dead that enlighten readers of these highly significannot facts and symbols throughout the novel. br br Though Milkman is a very symbolic character in Song of Solomon, he is not the only one. Pilate also has both a very symbolic character and name. First of all, her name is derived from the biblical name of Pontius Pilate, the man who sentenced Jesus to death on the cross. This name is very symbolic of her father s feelings toward her. Although her father does not purposely choose her name, considering he can t read, it quickly comes to signify the fact that her father feels that Pilate killed her mother, seeing as that her mother died during childbirth. Ironically, however, Pilate is murdered at the end of the book when she and Milkman go to give her father a proper burial. br br Pilate also represents a great deal more than a murderer. She has a large part of her mother s spirit in her because although, physically, her mother dies while giving birth to her, part of her soul enters Pilate, so part of her literally lives in her daughter. Therefore, when Pilate is killed during the burial of her father, it shows that both she and her mother are tired of life, they have both lived it to the fullest, and they both want to rest in peace with Pilate s father. br ... • 42. Asymmetric Synthesis Of 13 Diols And Chiral Sulfoxides Chapter 1 Review on Asymmetric Synthesis of 1,3 Diols and Chiral Sulfoxides 1.1.Importance and applications of chiral 1,3 diols Optically active 1,3 diols are very important compounds in asymmetric synthesis, since they represent chiral building blocks for many polyketide derived natural products, and have frequently been used as valuable intermediates in the synthesis of drugs and natural products with important biological activity. Such diols have shown promise as chiral derivatising agents and less frequently as chiral ligands. 1.1.1.As chiral ligands Unlike 1,2 and 1,4 diols, 1,3 diols are less frequently encountered as chiral ligand. A few C2 symmetric chiral 1,3 diols are known in the literature, none have proved to be very good sources of chirality. It is important that the diol is conformationally rigid for it to be an effective chiral auxiliary / ligand. Chiral 1,3 diols 20 21 were obtained from the yeast reduction products of 2 oxocyclopentane and 2 oxocyclohexane carboxylates and excess MeLi, BuLi or PhLi. These ligands form titanium complexes 22 with TiCl(i Pr0)3 which are effective catalysts for enantioselective nucleophilic addition of MeMgCl to benzaldehyde and 1 naphthaldehyde yielding 1 phenyl ethanol and 1 naphthyl ethanol respectively in good enantioselectivities. Recently Matsuo and coworkers have reported effective use of a chiral 1,3 diol ligand for brГёnsted acid catalyzed asymmetric reduction of ketones and acyl silanes. 1.1.2.As chiral ... He complains about the noises of the wilderness and how horrible they are. He does these things because he does not feel comfortable in these places he has never been before. He talks about how his hands are sweaty and his hair on his neck raises. He also, wonders why people live in such close area to the wilderness. The story says The town may be small and have little to offer, but how passionately he prefers its post office, its shops, its dry cleaning stores and picture framers to this creeping curtain of insidious green...(Desai). This complaining about the wilderness is most likely due to the fact that he has most likely stayed in town most of his stay in America. He has adapted to the town he has probably only really seen. 2. The passage from Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv, he uses many examples to prove his argument that we are separating from nature. He starts it off by talking about how they soon will be able to decide the color on butterfly s wings and how they can use nature to advertise. The Nature we all go visit is not real nature it s advertised and is not worth going to. They use parks and beaches to get there product out there just for some money to keep the area clean and well kept. It leads into talking about how we she nature from inside a car most of the time not in person. It talks about how now we don t even need to pay attention to the nature now because we have gps that guide us to our destination so we don t need to memorize routes. Even people in the back seat don t have to pay attention anymore as tvs are now in cars to either watch movies or play games. • 44. Skepticism About The External World Skepticism about the external world is one of the most widely discussed arguments in the history of philosophy. Barry Stroud defines skepticism as the idea that we cannot have knowledge about the external world (Stroud, page 1). This conclusion is the result of Rene Descartes Dream Argument and has been a topic of discussion ever since. No matter how we attack the argument, it seems that we inevitably arrive at skepticism. In this paper, I will argue that the skeptical conclusion is true and why it seems to be compelling as a necessary condition for knowledge. I will describe the Dream Argument and take a look at Moore s promising response to the conclusion as an inconsistent proof. In the end, Moore s argument for evidence of an external world will fail to disprove the skeptical conclusion due to its lack of justified belief. Although I am intuitively inclined to deny the skeptical argument, I cannot logically do so but will argue against full blown skepticism and explain how mild skepticism is a more approachable route to knowledge. In our everyday conversation, we do not generally question the validity of small claims that we make during normal interactions. In Meditation 1, Descartes decides that it is the right time to reevaluate the foundation of knowledge that he will rest his life upon from that point forward. He puts in question the things that he thinks he knows for certain. He acknowledges that everything he knows has been perceived from the senses or through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The US did not inform citizens of what was truly going on, nor why we were being dragged into this ware. We in many ways fueled this war and should have been held responsible for the devastation that would ensue. It is important the we realize the true nature of war and don t only believe that the governments reasons to be in such wars are the full truth. No countries in the Geneva Agreement that were communist were accepting of free election. If they did, they could lose power so there was never any intention of democracy. • 46. The Types Of Parliamentary Democracies The two types of Parliamentary democracies are direct democracy, also known as consociational or consensus democracy, and representative democracy, otherwise called majoritarian democracy (Dickovick 118 120). A consensus democracy is founded on the principle that the citizens govern directly and that power is distributed between the executive and legislative branches to prevent and limit one branch from gaining too much power. An example of a consensus democracyis Switzerland, as it promotes consensus of the people, and it exhibits the factors necessary for a direct democracy. Alternatively, a majoritarian democracy is based on the principle of majority rules, and that power is concentrated and centralized. The United Kingdom is an example of a majoritarian democracy because it follows the majority rule principle and possesses all the qualities of a representative democracy. While consensus democracy and majoritarian democracies are both forms of democracy, the contrasting approaches to democratic rule they engage in foremost pertaining to the ideas of distribution of political power, causes the two types of democracy to be diametrically opposite. A consociational or consensus democracy is commonly used in heterogeneous or plural societies, as a majority rule democracy would be unpredictable and hazardous in such a society. consensus democracy has its virtues in the front end of democracy. • 47. The Enlightenment s Era s Most Notable Thinkers The Enlightenment was a crucial period in modern history for the simple fact that it engendered some of the thoughts that are directly responsible for contemporary social, political, and religious institutions. This epoch, along with the Renaissance, helped to spur Western Civilization out of the Dark Ages and into contemporary conceptions of modernization. Not surprisingly, this time period is characterized by a number of different seditions and the revolutionary tenets that fueled them which were markedly at variance with social, political, and religious notions that preceded them. As these three spheres of life often intersect with one another, there is some degree of difficulty in isolating their specific causes in terms of respective Enlightenment principles. However, history has revealed that some of the most distinguishable characteristics of this historical era are its different ideas regarding the nature of politics and the role of government in ruling over the people, its new regard for and conception of traditional viewpoints of religion, and a philosophical divergence with the past in terms of ethics and psychology; a review of the Enlightenment s most notable thinkers (such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin) readily confirms this thesis. One of the central tenets of the Enlightenment that profoundly affected the confluence of social, political and religious aspects of life is the notion that man was endowed with the power to ... This statement shocked me since I could think of multiple reasons that led Mabel to attempt suicide. Throughout the short storyLawrence gave clues and reasons to why she attempts suicide. Mabel attempts suicide for the following reasons: To feel closer to her mother, bankruptcy after her father s death, and because she feels unloved. Also, how no longer having money she no longer feels secure as follows: For months, Mabel had been [sic]servantless in the big house, keeping the home together in penury for her ineffectual brothers. She had kept house for ten years. But previously, it was with unstinted means. Then, however brutal and coarse everything was, the sense of money had kept her proud, confident. The men might be fouled mouthed, the women in the kitchen might have bad reputations, her brothers might have illegitimate children. But so long as there was money, the girl felt herself established, and brutally proud, reserved. (Lawrence 4) The earlier quote shows how money and housekeeping has kept Mabel satisfied with her life. Now that her father has died Mabel and her family has gone bankrupt and will lose their money and their home. Lawrence notes, Now he was dead and everything was gone to the dogs, there was nothing but debt and threatening (4). Furthermore, Mabel has lost everything that makes her feel secure, established, proud, happy, and confident. Yes, indeed, Mabel attempts suicide because her family s bankruptcy caused her unhappiness. Once Mabel s mother had died Mabel began to feel unloved. The Clean Power Of The Dominican Republic Introduction The Clean Power Company has recently realized that in order to stay in business, they will have to move the company out of the country to the Dominican Republic. They have already purchased 500 acres of undeveloped land adjacent to the Chavon River. They also plan to build a school to help with overcrowding and to promote corporate social responsibility with the locals. Furthermore, as part of the sales agreement, the seller, Teltac Corporation, has agreed to put in roads, septic systems, and water lines. People in the new community feel that this is cause for major concern. The Clean Power Company has lots of ethical decisions to make. The two main ethical concerns that arise if Clean Power moves its company: First, how the move will effect the present stake holders (i.e. the employees, their families, the business partners of Clean Power, and shareholders in Cincinnati). Greece has more than one hero in their myths which include people such as Herakles and Antigone or in continuation, a very intelligent and strong person such as India s Draupadi. There are a vast amount of heroes and anti heroes present in David A. Leeming s The World of Myth, and each manage to overcome colossal obstacles or leave a legacy in both passive and active manners. For instance, Draupadi from India is a passive woman throughout the chapter, however at the end she becomes an active character, and the reader grasps how intelligent and powerful she is after refusing to be enslaved from the follies of her 5 husbands. On the other hand, Antigone from Greece is an active herothroughout the beginning, defending her brother s right to be buried as the law of the gods permit it. Although her death stopped her from being active, her legacy continued, punishing King Creon for enforcing this immoral law. Both Antigone and Draupadi are female heroes who have impacted their communities, however, it is accomplished differently because Antigone is an active character until her death and Draupadi is a dynamic character who changes from passive to active when she is being gambled. • 54. Plato s Euthyphro, Socrates And Euthyphro Essay In Plato s Euthyphro, Socrates and Euthyphro had a conversation about piety. During the conversation, Socrates raised a question which was a challenge to the Euthyphro s definition of piety. Also, this question is a challenge to the theists view of divine command theory. I agree with the arbitrariness objection which succeeds giving a good reason to theists to reject the divine command theory. This objection indicates that the arbitrariness of Gods commands contradicts to the fundamental attribute of God, and God s commands are unable to make an act morally good or bad. Socrates asked Euthyphro about the definition of piety and impiety. Euthyphro attempted a couple of times to answer Socrates question, and he finally defined piety as the pious is what all the gods love, and its opposite, what all the gods hate is the impious (Reeve and Miller 58). Then, Socrates responded to Euthyphro by asking him a question which was also the challenge; Socrates asked, is the pious loved by the gods because it s pious? Or is it pious because it s loved? (Reeve and Miller 58). This question not only gives Euthyphro a challenge to his definition of piety, but it also challenges the theists view of commands of God. In Socrates question, there are two interpretations about the commands of God. One interpretation is the divine command theory, this theory is that whatever god s commands equal to the moral goodness; wrong acts are wrong because god prohibits them, and good acts are good ...
