Analysis Of Los Olvidados
With a great reputation for its historical significance, Los olvidados (1951), a film shot in Mexico
City, directed by Luis Buñuel, endorsed the defining point of his profession. Having studied the given
excerpt of the script from a scene of the film, this report will not only portray intriguing political,
historical and social aspects, but also the phonological, morphological and lexical aspects and how
they influence the given content. The geographical location of this film has also proven to be of
relevant influence. Buñuel succeeded to attract the wider world s interest into his work as it was his
intention to make everyone realise the truth. Ironically, Buñuel being a surrealist director, Los
olvidados was not a surreal film. It was the first film directly addressing not only the issues identified
with the Mexican society but also Mexican cinema itself. From here, the attributes of Mexican cinema
were perpetually replaced.
Content Analysis
Los olvidados is based around the unfortunate events of streetboys whom gradually commit
lawlessness and breach the law under the influence on Jaibo, their leader. The given excerpt of the
script takes place in the beginning of the film, set in the Mexican slums. It is understood that Jaibo has
escaped from reform school, spots the boys in the street and reveals his encounters of the inside to
them. Many themes are picked up upon throughout this scene, the most fundamental being: Child
poverty, crime, machismo and more.
Commencing one of the main noticeable themes is poverty, which can be seen towards the end of the
given excerpt of the script. Child poverty is presented where Jaibo asks for a cigarette, which Cacarizo
replies to with Ni cigarros, ni quinto, mano. (Pountain: 209). It is inferred that the boys have
essentially nothing which can be linked to the historical aspects of Mexico city may have influenced
Buñuel s work. Due to the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (1927) creating an economy based on
the political views of themselves and the more prestigious citizens of mexico, with only the rich
getting wealthier, leaving the rest unprivileged and poverty stricken. This also meant further widening
the gap between the prosperous and the penniless of the

What Is The Corgers Of Marriott International And Starwood...
Hotel owners and Franchises:
Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resorts both have different unique selling points
enabling them to become large hotel companies. With the merger, both companies will combine their
unique qualities to encourage efficiency as well as new hotel developments. These improvements may
be able to increase profitability enabling owners to have increase in their revenue (Bethesda, 2016).
Due to the large increase in customer base and owning multiple properties all over the world,
competition certainly has reduced as a result. Thus, this may lead to monopolization of certain hotel
markets increasing profits for existing hotel owners and franchises (Butler, 2016). In addition, as both
companies already have their own wide company portfolio and brands, in the long term Marriott
International and Starwood Hotels and Resort can take advantage of the opportunity to explore variety
of brands within the expansion of their brand families. The exponential increase in their market power
and data access may lead to increase in their economies of scale, further increasing their profitability.
In addition, the increase market power means the companies will have stronger bargaining power
against OTAs, resulting in lower booking fees. Therefore, the reduction in their cost and increasing
their appearance on the OTAs being more exposed to potential customers which may further increase
their profitability as well as marketing power (Butler, 2016).

What Are Teachers, Educators, And Educators Preparing For...
Change represents a continuous awareness on one s self and the environment. It s no surprise that the
classroom, in terms of education, is becoming more diverse every school year, while teaching and
instructional practices remain the same. In fact, Ladson Billings states in an educational article that it
has become commonplace to point out that while the US teaching force is increasingly white, middle
class, and female, the nation s PK 12 student population is growing significantly more diverse (Ladson
Billings). So the question remains: How are teachers, administrators, and educators preparing for this
change? After all, education is not only a process that involves life experiences, acquiring knowledge,
and learning through instruction, but more importantly, it is about adapting to life experiences and
learning to acquire knowledge via diversity and multi cultural education. For these reasons, it is
pertinent that teachers are aware of the practices and strategies that can be used to effectively engage
all students in a culturally diverse classroom.
What is Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Culturally relevant pedagogy has emerged as an effective way
of centering the cultures, languages, and experiences that diverse students bring to classrooms so as to
increase their engagement and academic achievement (Irvine Armento, 2001).Culturally relevant
pedagogy builds on the understanding of how people are expected to go about learning may differ

Zimbardo s Prison Experiment
Adrien Brody (Travis) and Forest Whittaker (Michael) star in The Experiment, a film that features a
group of men who have volunteered and been chosen for a psychological experiment. In the
experiment the 26 men are split up into prison guards and inmates. Travis is selected as a prisoner
while Michael is picked to be a guard. A set of strict rules are put into place and if at any time the rules
are broken the experiment is over and the men will not receive their reward of $14,000 for
participating. As the movie progresses things move rather quickly and as most people would probably
assume, guards begin to feel like they re better than the prisoners and have all of the power. This leads
to the humiliation of the prisoners at the hands of the guards. In the final act Travis leads a ... Show

While attempting to stab Travis, Michael pauses seemingly in awe of what he has become and is
tackled to the ground. At this point the red light that signals the end of the experiment comes on and
the men stop the altercation. They exit the facility and are given their rewards and go home. The film
has a striking resemblance to something called Zimbardo s prison experiment . This experiment, like
the film, involves putting a group of individuals into a scenario in an attempt to evaluate effect of the
prison power structure. While there are differences from the actual experiment and the film, the
general storyline is there. Psychological experiment looking into perceived power, dissent between
guards and prisoners, riot, and an early ending to the experiment are all present in the film just like in
real life. In both instances the result was not as expected. In 1973 Zimbardo s experiment ended after
just 6 days rather than the intended 14. Both show that given certain circumstances individuals will
adapt to roles expected of them socially even to the point of extremism. Yet while this may be true,
there is a point in the film where

Sir George Calvert (The First Lord Baltimore)
George Calvert, (The first Lord Baltimore) born in Yorkshire, England 1579, and died in Lincoln s inn
fields ,London on April 15, 1632. He was the apparent first to have dreamed of a colony in America
where Catholics and Protestants could prosper together. He was a trusted advisor of Sir Robert Cecil,
who worked for King James I, hired George to be his secretary. In 1617 George was Knighted for
good service by King James I. George then became, Sir George Calvert, Secretary of State for King
James I. He later was granted the title, The First Baron of Baltimore, because George became a
member of the Roman Catholic Church and Catholics were not permitted to work in high offices for
the King of England or to work as Ministers of Parliament. George ... Show more content on

When his father died he became the Second Baron of Baltimore, he also inherited the colonies and
lands owned by his father. King Charles I approved the request from George to establish a colony
further North where it would be warmer, and it was called The Province of Maryland (Terra Mariae) in
1635. But the Charter family had received the approved Charter after George had died, which left
Cecil to establish and govern the new colony. Although Cecil was well educated he still did not have
the years of experience his father had at governing a colony. Cecil is said to of been a wise leader,
Cecil later invited sons of Catholic and Protestant families to sail to Maryland and establish the new
colony. Each of these men brought their wives, children, and servants with them to the New World. He
wanted to join in the Voyage to the New World but he feared if he left there would be no one to keep
the King s support for Maryland if he left the country. He sent his brother, Leonard, on the voyage and
made him the colony s first governor. Before Leonard sailed for Maryland in 1633 Cecil basically

The Stono Rebellion Summary
Prior reading this book, I had very little knowledge about the Slave Rebellion that took place at the
Stono River. I was also not very open minded about the book. As I started reading, I started to get
really engaged to the book. What really made me want to keep reading was the fact that the author was
continuously looking for answers to this event. We also find out that there are different sides to this
story. As he provides us previews of the different stories, I began to get very eager in finding out what
they were and why were there so many to begin with. The author Peter C. Hoffer had a very clear
argument. He argued that the Stono Rebellion was not planned as people have claimed it to be. He
believed that the slave rebellion was something that was bound to happen eventually but, cannot be
predicted. Hoffer questions different historians and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He ties all of the information he knows with information being told from other historians. Hoffer is
very clear on his purpose of what brought him to write his interpretation. He compares multiples
theories to the one of his own to give an idea of why different stories have been told in describing the
Stono Rebellion. As soon as he writes his first few sentences; he already starts to argue that the stories
being told in which he believes are being told backwards. The author questions the whole story to
prove to readers how its makes no sense and how his side of the story would make more sense. Not
only does he visit multiple places to get answers, he constantly tries to vision himself as one of the
slaves and puts himself in their shoes. The author connects his experience to ones of the slaves by
describing how the features of the Pon Pon road are still the same. He constantly compares the land
from when he saw it to from when the slaves were there. He even tries to envision where the
Hutchinson s store was and how far the slaves had gone from

Stereotypes In Reality Television
Manipulation: to control (others or oneself) or influence skillfully, usually to one s advantage
(thefreedictionary. com). This is what reality television manages to do to the world we live in today.
Reality television in fact, is not always real. Many shows on television create a false sense of reality
for their viewers. This influences people to think, act, and feel certain ways about others and the world
around them.

millions of TV viewers believe that sisterhood is not powerful but spiteful, it becomes all that much

Cost Of Professional Sports Essay
Professional sports in the United States have served as a staple for consumer entertainment for over a
century, while at the same time providing a sense of unity that a community can rally behind. When an
owner wants to acquire or create a new franchise, they rely heavily on the surrounding community to
help fund and support its creation. While many of these individuals have adequate funds to do this on
their own, they argue that the community will reap a large expense of the reward from establishing a
team and push the burden of large fixed costs on the community. Due to the unpredictable demand for
professional sports, do the costs associated with a franchise outweigh the assumed risks placed on a
community? When a professional sports team decides to move to a city, several factors are analyzed
and required before their arrival. One of the more important decisions made is where will the team
play? Accounting as one of the greatest expenses, constructing an arena or stadium is a fixed cost
taken on by a local government and its community. Opened in the mid 1990 s, The Edward Jones
Dome once served as a beacon of hope for the people of St. Louis for their newly acquired football

for a team to exist. These costs are paid no matter what, regardless of whether there is any revenue. If

revenue is lost along with it. With a negative ATC and MC linked to the marginal revenue, a franchise

Balanced Scorecard And Malcolm Baldrige Performance...
Balanced Scorecard and Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence Program Comparison
Merriam Webster defines quality as a degree of excellence, or a distinguishing attribute. Managers
strive for excellence in the workplace to improve customer satisfaction, increase the output in
manufacturing while minimizing defects, as well as making the company more profitable. There are
several different management systems or methodologies available for businesses to use, but the
Balanced Scorecard and the Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is the most common
and widely used in the United States.
The Balanced Scorecard Institute reports that in the 1950 s General Electric was the first to use the
Balanced Scorecard approach, but it was not until the 1990 s when Dr. Robert Kaplan a Harvard
Business School professor and Dr. David Norton officially titled it the Balanced Scorecard. Once used
as only a measurement tool for organizations, it is now a complete strategic planning and management
system (Balanced Scorecard Institute, n.d.). Originally, businesses looked at the financial reports to
distinguish whether it was a quality company or not. Kaplan and Norton however believed the
financial reports only showed past history and an organization must also track how it is performing
currently and look at ways to constantly improve future performance. Kaplan and Norton established
there are four business segments or perspectives to measure and make improvements on. The four

effects. Children are specifically effected by ongoing conflicts. Children who grow up in areas of
ongoing conflict develop stereotypes and attitudes towards those in the opposing group. It effects their

Post General Education Classes
Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think (Albert Einstein). There are
different types of teachers or instructors, those who tell, those who coach, and those who mentor their
students; just as there are different types of schools and classes. Each person chooses their path and
education, either with or with or without support. The teachers in general education classes typically
are more proficient in one specific subject but can generally teach basics of all the traditional studies;
they are not specialized or experts in any one course. Class sizes are generally too large for teachers to

mentors or instructors are certified in their areas of expertise. The classes are compiled of students
who want to be further taught skills needed for a profession and learn better in a more hands on

the Modern World (UMW) Title of assignment: What is nationalism, and can it survive in a
globalizing world? Lecturer s name: Kevin Manton Word Count: 1502 words Nationalism is a very
broad concept that only emerged in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before the idea of
nationalism, people were loyal to their own religious spheres. There is therefore a general consensus
that nationalism is a modern invention. (Kidd 1999) In Europe, people were attached to their religion,
mainly Christianity. The concept of a national identity was inexistent. However, ever since the
nineteenth century, people have started to see themselves as nationals of a particular nation. (Kedourie
1960) The shared characteristics of people within countries have created the concept of nationalism,
where people feel bonded within their own nation. The main notion of nationalism stems from the fact
that people share something in common and thus they have a national identity. (Spencer, Wollman
2002) This common bond can come in many forms political, cultural and territorial. Given the ever
changing nature of social relations, powers and political systems around the world due to

College Is A Essential Tool For Life Essay
The research topic of the connection between students who are in college and the level of stress they
inquire financially and generally has had a huge impact on society. College is a very essential tool for
life. College is meant to learn and experience a variety of techniques to use in your everyday life. On
the other hand, college can become a very stressful place, whether it s because of your financial status
or in general. The increase in responsibilities after transitioning from a young adolescent to an adult is
a cause of stress. There are two different sources of stress, external stress and internal stress. External
stress is getting a bad grade on an assignments/test or relationship problems. Internal stress are
motivators that put high expectations on one s self to accomplish or achieve something. Financial
stress is worrying about how you are going to pay for something and where you will get the money to
pay for it. In academic communities financial stress can cause low performance in school work. Also,
stress can cause the low rate of attendance in the academic communities. The amount of workload
assignment wise and job wise can significantly bring stress due to the balance between the two. A
solution for financial stress and general stress could be to make more scholarships and grants available
to students, and find ways to relieve stress. In the article Surviving Stress and Anxiety in College

Essay On Magnetic Field
Summer of 2017 saw UT Southwestern Medical Center make considerable strides in biotech with the
development of high frequency alternating magnetic fields to destroy bacterial films on the surfaces of
artificial joints in the body simply by heating the joints themselves. These bacterial infections tend to
be of great detriment to patients, and they prove impeccably resilient to antibiotics. Since then, that
same research has been furthered to prove itself on human test subjects. Now, the U.S. Energy

When we look at samples prepared in the conventional way, we have to make many assumptions
about their properties based on their final state, but with the new technique, we can now observe these
processes first hand, Prozorov explains. It can help us understand the dynamics of macromolecule
aggregation, nanoparticle self assembly, and the effects of electric and magnetic fields on that process.
This bears significant implications for biotechnological applications, especially in light of recent
research regarding the use of magnetic heating to eradicate bacteria from surfaces within the human
body.
People get metal parts implanted all the time to compensate for injuries or very old body parts. These
pieces range from metal plates to pins to artificial joints, but they all serve relatively similar purposes
holding bones together. The problem that comes from this from time to time is that bacteria inside a
patient s body eventually find these metal surfaces and seek refuge on or in them. Ordinarily,
physicians recommend surgery to get rid of those bacteria, but new research suggests that surgery may
no longer be necessary; rather, it may be possible to get the same result with the non invasive
alternative of magnetic heating.
These bacteria can be very difficult to remove because they form biofilms thin sheets that form a
viscous, protective membrane of sorts like plaque on enamel. Even though this only happens to

In The Long Run The Oppressor
In his novel, A People s History of the United States: 1492 Present, Howard Zinn offers readers a new
and unexpected take on American history. First published in 1980, A People s History is often received
with much controversy and criticism, as Zinn does something that historians rarely do: he openly
rejects the narrative of American history as told by a European perspective. The first chapter of the
novel mainly serves to illustrate two of Zinn s most fundamental ideas: one, that he, as a historian,
chooses to write from the lesser known perspective of groups whose voices have been suppressed; and
two, that it is necessary for people to ask themselves to what extent is it right to justify atrocities in the
name of human progress. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zinn does not fully explain what he means when he states this; instead, he leaves it open ended for one
to interpret as they may choose. It is possible, however, to infer that the meaning of the oppressor is
also a victim is a lesson that Zinn wishes to communicate: when a society decides that oppression and
control are the elements that define power and human progress, it unknowingly becomes victim to the
repetition of history that it refuses to learn from (page 10). Far too often, we, as a society, learn what
Zinn calls a sense of moral proportion, in which we downplay atrocities and emphasize the importance
of human progress, which not only serves to justify what has been done, but also blinds us to the fact
that history has and will repeat itself again (page 9). We accept genocides and other forms of violence,
as seen with the Native Americans, and bury them within a mass of other facts in order to rationalize
that such events were necessary for the human race to progress. The very fact that Zinn s novel
sparked such controversy when it was first published clearly demonstrates that, to at least some extent,
people were averse to being exposed to a perspective on history that does not glorify the Europeans
and reveals extreme cruelty and brutality on both sides. We need not condemn the Europeans for their
actions, as it is far too late

Judah Chapter Eight Summary
Tullock begins chapter eight by discussing Rehoboam s reign and the other kings of Judah.
Considered to be unsuccessful, Rehoboam is known for dealing with the revolt of Israel and facing
issues with the Shishak of Egypt. Abijam and Asa of Judah have been depicted as father and son and
also brother by interpretations found in 1 Kings 15. 2 Chronicles clears some confusion by altering
Abijam s name to Abijah, and Abijah is known for military skill and capturing Bethel, Jeshanah, and
Ephron. Asa is known for religious reform and military successes such as capturing the cities of Dan
and Hazor. Jehoshaphat s reign is considered positive and peaceful due to the alliance formed between
Jehoshaphat and Ahab. This alliance was confirmed when Jehoshaphat s son Jehoram and ... Show

Jehoram is known for not dealing with the Jehu uprising because of his death, but his son Ahaziah
dealt with the uprising. Ahaziah s son Joram were victims of the Jehu uprising. Athaliah was the only
woman to rule Judah and Israel. Known for killing others, she was unable to kill her future
predecessor Joash who hid in the Temple for six years by his Aunt. Joash s reign was long and
peaceful besides the attacks by Hazael. Amaziah, the son of Joash, encountered warfare between Israel
and Judah. Amaziah was captured by Jehoash s army. Uzziah brought prosperity to Judah by
conquering the Philistine, pushing back the Ammonites, fortified Jerusalem, promoted agriculture, and
modernized the army. The remaining sections of chapter eight discuss Judah after the destruction of
Israel. Tullock begins by mentioning Hezekiah and stories between Isaiah and the kings of Judah.
Hezekiah is considered to be a blessing for Judah because Hezekiah was active in religious reform in
Judah. Isaiah is mentioned in Hezekiah s story in 1 Kings 18 20. Isaiah was

Puerto Rico Territory
Why do so many people argue about how Puerto Rico became a territory? Several historians believe
that Puerto Rico was made a US Territory by The Foraker Act of 1900. Other historians say that The
Jones Shafroth Act of 1917 made it a US Territory. Some might also say it was World War I. This
essay will tell you about, Puerto Rico, all three things, and also which one is truly correct. Before
starting to truly explain things, let me explain how this whole thing started.
At the beginning is how Puerto Rico was discovered. Puerto Rico was found by Christopher
Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas, when he was trying to find his fort on Hispaniola
called La Navidad which was destroyed. Then Juan Ponce de Léon stumbled across Puerto Rico again
while on his search to find the mystical Fountain of Youth . Then for the next three hundred years,
Spain will rule Puerto Rico with an iron fist until 1898 when the Spanish American War broke out and
the USA got Puerto Rico for themselves. The Spanish American War was a three month war that
started on April 25, 1898 and ended on August 12, 1898. The war was started when the USS Maine
blew up on February 15, 1898 by a supposed underwater mine. The Americans blamed the Spanish
even though there is no evidence leading to that the USS Maine was blown up by an underwater mine.

Lars Brownworth Lost To The West Summary
Once a Frankish king, Charlemagne was declared the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire in the West by
Pope Leo III, whom he defended in a vicious legal battle (153). This, of course, incited fury in the
East, as the Pope did not truly possess this authority, causing the divide between the Eastern and
Western Christianity to grow further and become more volatile (154). Consequently, when
Charlemagne sent a marriage proposal to Irene and Irene considered accepting, her subjects quickly
overthrew her (154).
As invaders continued to flood the Byzantine Empire, faith in Iconoclasm finally shattered and the
destruction of icons was officially condemned (158 158). Subsequently, under the rule of Emperor
Theophilus, the East experienced an unparalleled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Factory Working Conditions Of Bangladesh
Factory Working Conditions In Bangladesh Does it take a catastrophic event for the factories in
Bangladesh to become know for the harsh working conditions? Most Americans don t understand, nor
do Americans see how the factories and sweatshop workers are affected by the unsafe environments,
the illegal use of children, and the minimal pay with no compensation. Americans take for granted the
pay received, and the type of working conditions that are set in order to for the business to operate.
Child labor laws in Bangladesh are very few in number, and the few that are set in place don t
completely protect the underage children working. Working in such a hazardous environment the
workers should be compensated in either pay or benefits. The working environments and conditions in
Bangladesh are not only harsh, but unsafe, and the workers are under compensated for the conditions.
Factories in Bangladesh have some of the worst working environments for workers to operate in.
There is no comparison between American factories, and factories in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh alone
some of the most catastrophic work hazards happen in the factories. In
Spencer 2
America certain laws are set in place to have guarantee that hazardous workplaces are under control,
and at a certain point. Otherwise the business and or factory would have to be shut down for unsafe
working conditions. On the 24th of April 2013 one of the most catastrophic

The Distinctive Features of Thatcherism and Reaganomics
Introduction
The policies of Thatcherism and Reaganomics significantly influenced the economies of the countries
where they were applied. Some of their impacts are observed to be existing up to date although in
more reformed and improved system. This research paper examines the features and achievements of
the two policies and the impact they had on the citizens of these countries. It seeks to establish what
negative impacts these policies brought with them in their bid to facilitate economical improvements

First, many have argued that Thatcherism contributed significantly into economic recovery of Britain
after the war. This is mainly visible in its quest to control the rate of inflation which was a success.
However, this success has been criticized for the huge level of unemployment it brought with it. The
policy also managed to instill competition in the economy which facilitated growth of the economy.
This was necessary to salvage the image which was heavily dented on the international scene. With
these efforts, the conservative party had managed to win back the trust of its citizens. Thatcherism also
brought the theory of monetarism. Through this theory, they discovered that inflation was caused by
injecting excess money into the economy by printing money and this situation could be controlled by
using the instruments of monetary policy to mop up the excess money supply. However, some
economists have argued that the negative impacts of this policy overshadowed its positive
contributions hence the system is considered a failure (Harvey 2010,

Bear Hunting in New Jersey
Bear Hunting in New Jersey
The head of the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency has resumed the black bear hunts that
had been paused for five years due to over hunting. In this time, the population of black bears has
risen once again to a safe level for hunting, and the republican controlled government has allowed
hunters to resume their hunting. Some wildlife activists see the hunts as unnecessary and cruel, and
wish to defend the bears. This belief is opposed by the hunting organizations that have pointed to a
long history of hunting, as well as the potential danger that black bears present, as points that may
hinder their cause. I am on the side of the hunters, as I think that the government s job is to make sure
both the bears are protected and the hunters are happy, and therefore a happy medium must be
reached. Too many black bears can be dangerous for the residents of New Jersey. (Nuwer, 2011) They
are migrating animals, and often enter into human neighborhoods in search of food often found in
people s waste bins. This has led the NRA and other hunting groups to petition the state government
on the issue of bear hunting for safety. Activist groups believe that taking better precautions to secure
garbage around the state of New Jersey would keep the bears away from human areas, and that there
are other ways to curb population growth besides hunting bears. These wildlife activists also point out
that bears are usually passive, and unless threatened, are less

Why Is Data Security Important
In today s advanced world of technology, valuable information holds the same amount of worth that of
new world currency. Since information is highly important, it is crucial that it remains secured. This is
ultimately covered by data security and privacy. Online data is a hacker s dream, as it holds the
ultimate value of materials for these cybercriminals. For example, on a broader scale, banking
information can be worth over a thousand dollars depending on the account balance. If cybercriminals
get a hold of these information s, it can be costly for businesses. On a smaller scale, for a small
business, customer information theft can paralyze operations and even put a company out of business.
In order to prevent these crimes, there are nine important data security policies that starts with
ensuring data security accountability, policies that govern network services, scanning for
vulnerabilities, managing patches, system data security policies, the response to incidents, acceptable
use, monitoring compliance, and account monitoring and control.
Ensuring data security accountability is an important factor in a company. The company needs to
make sure they are aware of the responsibilities. Information like confidential data has value and also
bank account statements, personal information, and credit card numbers. According to a statement on
IT Security Community Blog: A very key component of protecting information confidentiality would
be encryption. Encryption ensures that

Final Exam Essay
Writing is one of the most difficult subjects I have taken on this spring semester. Being able to identify
the different types of essays as well as putting my skills together to write them is the most difficult to
me. Although I have learned from the negative and positive feedback, I still feel there is a huge area

The Second Sutta Of The Digha Nikaya
The second sutta of the Digha Nikaya is called the Samannaphala Sutta. Contrary to appearances, the
immediate source of this title is not samana, a wanderer, but rather samañña, which refers to the state
of being a monastic (lit. conformity, generality ). According to the Access to Insight website, it also
refers to an instrument tuned on pitch (from sama, even, + anna, reciprocally ), the subject of a famous
metaphor of the Buddha. The root sam refers to calmness, tranquility, mental quiet, whereas anna also
has the meaning of knowledge, especially the knowledge of an arhant. In Sanskrit, sama has the

When the king came near to the grove, it was dark and deathly quiet, and the king suspected a trap, but
Jivaka assured him that it was safe. In the distance, he was able to see torches inside a round pavilion,

pavilion, with many monastics sitting, facing him, all dressed in simple ochre stained robes. The king

Analysis Of Nothing Gold Can Stay By Jane Flanders
The world has several great poets and numerous mind blowing works, each with its own way of
portraying its own message using symbolism to represent lessons of everyday life. Jane Flanders
wrote the poem named Cloud Painter she shows the world from an artistic way, using a painter and his
canvas to help the reader picture the true meaning behind the words and images created. Robert Frost
takes on the same idea, but uses a less complex example so that it makes his work easy to understand
while not revealing the actual meaning of the poem. Frost and Flanders are just two of the many poets
that use nature as a way of explaining the very lessons in life. Each poet has a different way of
presenting similar images but from a different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Flanders uses this line to represent the things opportunities in the world that are there and difficult to
get without giving up something in return. The special chances that are there from the start are often
not appreciated but the ones that have been worked for do not tend to lose their value over time.
Robert Frost on the other hand used a more fictional approach in Nothing Gold Can Stay . Nature s
first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. This couplet has one key theme that not only lies in the
word choice but in the writing, itself. The start of spring is when all the new flowers blossom and the
leaves on trees become greener. The start of something fresh and lovely is the main point in this line
but this is also a way of saying that the best things that are free are given without any strings or
repercussions are taken advantage of. The next two lines Her early leaf s a flower; But only so an
hour. In other words, the possibilities that are given throughout life can also be taken away just as fast.
In Frost s poem, he uses the garden of Eden to help the reader to imagine where this idea is heading.
In the first sentence Frost states that Natures first green is gold this represents the very first blooming
of flowers and the return of the green leaves during the springtime which when applied to life, it

there, however the inability to reach Hong Xiuquan s utopia in Nanjing caused him to lose focus and
enjoy the pleasures of his palace instead of gaining more followers. Without Hong Xiuquan leading,
the Taiping rebellion came to their end in the hands of Li Hongzhang and Zeng Guofan. In 1988, when

The Great Lakes Region By Richard White
Richard White provides a refreshing perspective on the Great Lakes region during the colonial and
early national periods in regards to the developing relationships between the intrusive French, British,
Americans and the indigenous Native Americans. The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and
Republics in the Great Lakes Region effectively links Native American history to broader themes in
American history. He presents a convincing argument of how the Middle Ground, a place the French
called the pays d en haut, allowed for mutual accommodation and an acculturative social solution to
develop out of the misunderstandings and the new meanings given to older institutions. White looks to
this area to show how Native Americans and Europeans together constructed a complex and dynamic
world that became the multiethnic society of early America. White has written a remarkable book that
further enriches the historiography of the Great Lakes region and gives us a fuller understanding of
this complicated world that underwent profound historic change. White presents an interesting
introduction that demonstrates the extremely complex subject and multiple influences that defined the
middle ground. He does not state an obvious thesis in his introduction but rather details the larger
themes he intends to analyze within the context of his book. He debunks the American myths related
to the period of European expansion in the Great Lakes region by noting that contact was not a battle

Pain and Painkillers
Like a bell ringing mechanism in a church . That is how, in 1664, Descartes (Jackson, 2002) suggested
pain should be visualized. This, however, is a very primitive description of the phenomenon of pain.
Injury or inflammation of a bodily tissue can lead to profound changes in the internal chemical
environment. Damaged cells discharge their intracellular components, releasing substances, notably
ATP, potassium ions (K+) and acetyl chloine (ACh). Some of these contents act on nociceptors
directly, triggering an action potential which will end up in the brain. Other components released from
the cells can sensitize the terminals, making them hypersensitive to further stimuli. This allows a pain
signal to be transmitted when a seemingly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This hinders the production of the neurotransmitter ACh, resulting in fewer action potentials being
transmitted down the neurones and hence a numbing effect is experienced. It is thought that morphine
and other narcotics may exploit this natural mechanism that has evolved for the similarly shaped
enkephalins. Heroin is a far more powerful drug than morphine, possibly because the drugpasses the
blood brain barrier far more readily. The heroin is then hydrolysed to morphine once inside the body
and so the pain killing mechanism is likely to be very similar to the way in which morphine works.
However, it is common to develop tolerance and desensitization towards opioids as the opioid
receptors are continually used. This has been termed the cascade of cellular adaptation (Strelzer J,
2001; Borgland SL, 2001). Furthermore, animal studies have suggested that, in the case of morphine
taken during chronic pain, not only tolerance is acquired towards its analgesic effects, but also an
increased sensitivity towards pain actually develops (Ibuki T, et al, 1997; Celerier E et al, 2001).
Non narcotic analgesics are the household drugs used to treat moderate pains. These include
paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen. There are very few noticeable effects beyond treating specific
pains (in contrast to narcotics, when a feeling of well being takes over the body).

Case Study: Royal Bank of Canada in Thailand
1. What were RBC s ultimate goals in opening a representative office in Thailand?
When RBC opened a representative office in Thailand in the early 1980 s, its ultimate goal was to
obtain a full branch license. RBC felt that Thailand had the potential to become a regional financial
center, and they certainly wanted to have an established presence in a country with this sort of
opportunity. RBC also had the corporate goal of increasing the amount of its business generated from
non Canadian sources. With RBC locations in Asia already accounting for 16% of their total
international earning assets, opening a new branch in Asia seemed likely to help achieve the bank s
corporate goal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
6. What are Thailand s most important exports?
Thailand s most important exports are tourism and manufactured products. Manufactured products
such as: clothing, electronic parts and components, furniture, and jewelry account for 81% of the
nation s export volume. With seven million people going to Thailand each year, tourism accounts for
13% of the country s total export revenue.
7. What is the current (1997) situation in Thailand?
After a decade of sustained growth, the current situation in Thailand is one of unprecedented
economic turmoil. The countries exports have halted, foreign investors have become hesitant with
their money due to the account deficit, the stock market plummeted, and big loans made by banks
have caused a large accumulation of debt. Typical causes of an economic crisis, such as: high debt,
large current account deficit, deregulation of the banking industry without proper controls in place,
and a semi fixed exchange rate are all at the forefront of the nation s current economic state.
8. What are the highlights of the IMF s bailout of Thailand?
The IMF s bailout of Thailand was an agreement that would give the Thai government $16.7 billion in
loans in exchange for the country adopting a tough program of economic and financial reforms. These
reforms required the closing of 16 finance firms; these 16 firms would either have to merge with other
banks, or submit their own rehabilitation plan. This agreement with the IMF

Myth of Propaganda in the Balkans and Rwanda Essay
Mass Manipulation and Genocide:
The Myth of Propaganda in the Balkans and Rwanda
War and conquest have been among the most enduring traits of humankind throughout the ages. While
we would all like to believe that we are, by nature, a peaceful species, we still understand there are
some things worth fighting for, and given the appropriate context, there are some things worth killing
for. As reasoning beings, we hope that if violence is the only option it is for a clear and legitimate
purpose. That is why it was so confounding to hear of such heinous acts of senseless violence as
stories from Germany began to emerge after World War II. The world shuddered as the actions of
Hitler s henchmen attempting to eradicate entire ethnic groups ... Show more content on

Indeed, the propaganda employed through various media was instrumental in the rise of nationalism
and the fomenting of fear and ethnic hatred in the Balkans and in Rwanda. It is clear that propaganda
is a powerful tool and its implementation played a significant role in these conflicts, but the extent of
that role is less certain. Does propaganda alone have the power to incite genocide and ethnic
cleansing? Are certain media more effective in achieving extremist goals than others? Could we stop
genocides before they start by identifying and targeting outlets of propaganda? As this paper will
demonstrate, the social, political and economic climates of nations in question in this case, Rwanda
and the former Yugoslavia determine how effective state sponsored propaganda is at crystallizing
divisions among people and inspiring one group to attempt to eradicate another. Before we can
understand how propaganda operates, it is important to define exactly what we mean by propaganda.
The term itself dates back to 1622 when Pope Gregory XV established a papal bull with the title Sacra
Congregatio de Propaganda Fedei, an effort to counter the Protestant movement. Thus from its
inception, propaganda was employed to establish a sense of otherness within populations, inspiring
negative reactions among Protestants and positive feelings among

Climate Analysis On Climate Archives
There is significant evidence from studies based on climate archives that the Earth s climate about 10
000 years ago was very different from the present climate; it has changed a lot since the last glacial
period which ended about 10 000 12 000 years ago (Chappell, 1998). Hence, about 10 000 years ago
the Earth was buried under ice sheets and it was much cooler than present temperatures (see Figure 1,
Appendix) (Chappell, 1998). The Earth that has been cycling between cold and warm climates for
ages and is currently in the interglacial period where it has slowly become warmer along with a rise in
sea level (Watts, 2009). There are many climate archives which can help scientists study past climates
and their development over time. Climate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Corals were first discovered about 200 million years, however most have grown over the last 10 000
years. Therefore, corals are great climate archives to use in order to study the climate from the last 10
000 years. Corals also have a wide array of climatic history stored within them (Introduction: Coral
Reefs, 2015). They have a long lifetime and rapid growth which makes them ideal climate archives for
studying the past climate (Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, 2015). Along with the corals
there is the foraminifera; also referred to as sea floor fossils. These sea floor fossils are often found in
sediment cores and can reveal a variety of things about the past climate through ocean currents,
temperature and oxygen ratios. Also these fossils are the most common source of paleoceanographic
proxies, making them easily available (Kucera, 2007). Hence, foraminifera or sea floor fossils are an
ideal climate archives for studying the past climate from about 10 000 years ago alongside corals.
Information about the past climate can not only help us understand our present climate but can also
help predict our future climate trends.
Corals, which are one of the climate archives been discussed, are living organisms who produce a
calcium carbonate skeleton to make themselves look like rocks. The calcium carbonate bands found in
corals help form permanent records of seasonal and annual climate changes. Corals are a type of biotic
proxy; which are proxies based on the

  • 2. Analysis Of Los Olvidados With a great reputation for its historical significance, Los olvidados (1951), a film shot in Mexico City, directed by Luis Buñuel, endorsed the defining point of his profession. Having studied the given excerpt of the script from a scene of the film, this report will not only portray intriguing political, historical and social aspects, but also the phonological, morphological and lexical aspects and how they influence the given content. The geographical location of this film has also proven to be of relevant influence. Buñuel succeeded to attract the wider world s interest into his work as it was his intention to make everyone realise the truth. Ironically, Buñuel being a surrealist director, Los olvidados was not a surreal film. It was the first film directly addressing not only the issues identified with the Mexican society but also Mexican cinema itself. From here, the attributes of Mexican cinema were perpetually replaced. Content Analysis Los olvidados is based around the unfortunate events of streetboys whom gradually commit lawlessness and breach the law under the influence on Jaibo, their leader. The given excerpt of the script takes place in the beginning of the film, set in the Mexican slums. It is understood that Jaibo has escaped from reform school, spots the boys in the street and reveals his encounters of the inside to them. Many themes are picked up upon throughout this scene, the most fundamental being: Child poverty, crime, machismo and more. Commencing one of the main noticeable themes is poverty, which can be seen towards the end of the given excerpt of the script. Child poverty is presented where Jaibo asks for a cigarette, which Cacarizo replies to with Ni cigarros, ni quinto, mano. (Pountain: 209). It is inferred that the boys have essentially nothing which can be linked to the historical aspects of Mexico city may have influenced Buñuel s work. Due to the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (1927) creating an economy based on the political views of themselves and the more prestigious citizens of mexico, with only the rich getting wealthier, leaving the rest unprivileged and poverty stricken. This also meant further widening the gap between the prosperous and the penniless of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hotel owners and Franchises: Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resorts both have different unique selling points enabling them to become large hotel companies. With the merger, both companies will combine their unique qualities to encourage efficiency as well as new hotel developments. These improvements may be able to increase profitability enabling owners to have increase in their revenue (Bethesda, 2016). Due to the large increase in customer base and owning multiple properties all over the world, competition certainly has reduced as a result. Thus, this may lead to monopolization of certain hotel markets increasing profits for existing hotel owners and franchises (Butler, 2016). In addition, as both companies already have their own wide company portfolio and brands, in the long term Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resort can take advantage of the opportunity to explore variety of brands within the expansion of their brand families. The exponential increase in their market power and data access may lead to increase in their economies of scale, further increasing their profitability. In addition, the increase market power means the companies will have stronger bargaining power against OTAs, resulting in lower booking fees. Therefore, the reduction in their cost and increasing their appearance on the OTAs being more exposed to potential customers which may further increase their profitability as well as marketing power (Butler, 2016). • 4. What Are Teachers, Educators, And Educators Preparing For... Change represents a continuous awareness on one s self and the environment. It s no surprise that the classroom, in terms of education, is becoming more diverse every school year, while teaching and instructional practices remain the same. In fact, Ladson Billings states in an educational article that it has become commonplace to point out that while the US teaching force is increasingly white, middle class, and female, the nation s PK 12 student population is growing significantly more diverse (Ladson Billings). So the question remains: How are teachers, administrators, and educators preparing for this change? After all, education is not only a process that involves life experiences, acquiring knowledge, and learning through instruction, but more importantly, it is about adapting to life experiences and learning to acquire knowledge via diversity and multi cultural education. For these reasons, it is pertinent that teachers are aware of the practices and strategies that can be used to effectively engage all students in a culturally diverse classroom. What is Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Culturally relevant pedagogy has emerged as an effective way of centering the cultures, languages, and experiences that diverse students bring to classrooms so as to increase their engagement and academic achievement (Irvine Armento, 2001).Culturally relevant pedagogy builds on the understanding of how people are expected to go about learning may differ across cultures, and in order ... Zimbardo s Prison Experiment Adrien Brody (Travis) and Forest Whittaker (Michael) star in The Experiment, a film that features a group of men who have volunteered and been chosen for a psychological experiment. In the experiment the 26 men are split up into prison guards and inmates. Travis is selected as a prisoner while Michael is picked to be a guard. A set of strict rules are put into place and if at any time the rules are broken the experiment is over and the men will not receive their reward of $14,000 for participating. As the movie progresses things move rather quickly and as most people would probably assume, guards begin to feel like they re better than the prisoners and have all of the power. While attempting to stab Travis, Michael pauses seemingly in awe of what he has become and is tackled to the ground. At this point the red light that signals the end of the experiment comes on and the men stop the altercation. They exit the facility and are given their rewards and go home. The film has a striking resemblance to something called Zimbardo s prison experiment . This experiment, like the film, involves putting a group of individuals into a scenario in an attempt to evaluate effect of the prison power structure. While there are differences from the actual experiment and the film, the general storyline is there. Psychological experiment looking into perceived power, dissent between guards and prisoners, riot, and an early ending to the experiment are all present in the film just like in real life. In both instances the result was not as expected. In 1973 Zimbardo s experiment ended after just 6 days rather than the intended 14. Both show that given certain circumstances individuals will adapt to roles expected of them socially even to the point of extremism. Yet while this may be true, there is a point in the film where ... Although Cecil was well educated he still did not have the years of experience his father had at governing a colony. As I started reading, I started to get really engaged to the book. What really made me want to keep reading was the fact that the author was continuously looking for answers to this event. We also find out that there are different sides to this story. As he provides us previews of the different stories, I began to get very eager in finding out what they were and why were there so many to begin with. The author Peter C. • 12. Cost Of Professional Sports Essay Professional sports in the United States have served as a staple for consumer entertainment for over a century, while at the same time providing a sense of unity that a community can rally behind. When an owner wants to acquire or create a new franchise, they rely heavily on the surrounding community to help fund and support its creation. While many of these individuals have adequate funds to do this on their own, they argue that the community will reap a large expense of the reward from establishing a team and push the burden of large fixed costs on the community. Due to the unpredictable demand for professional sports, do the costs associated with a franchise outweigh the assumed risks placed on a community? When a professional sports team decides to move to a city, several factors are analyzed and required before their arrival. One of the more important decisions made is where will the team play? Accounting as one of the greatest expenses, constructing an arena or stadium is a fixed cost taken on by a local government and its community. There are several different management systems or methodologies available for businesses to use, but the Balanced Scorecard and the Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is the most common and widely used in the United States. The Balanced Scorecard Institute reports that in the 1950 s General Electric was the first to use the Balanced Scorecard approach, but it was not until the 1990 s when Dr. Robert Kaplan a Harvard Business School professor and Dr. David Norton officially titled it the Balanced Scorecard. Once used as only a measurement tool for organizations, it is now a complete strategic planning and management system (Balanced Scorecard Institute, n.d.). Originally, businesses looked at the financial reports to distinguish whether it was a quality company or not. Lecturer s name: Kevin Manton Word Count: 1502 words Nationalism is a very broad concept that only emerged in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before the idea of nationalism, people were loyal to their own religious spheres. There is therefore a general consensus that nationalism is a modern invention. (Kidd 1999) In Europe, people were attached to their religion, mainly Christianity. The concept of a national identity was inexistent. However, ever since the nineteenth century, people have started to see themselves as nationals of a particular nation. (Kedourie 1960) The shared characteristics of people within countries have created the concept of nationalism, where people feel bonded within their own nation. The main notion of nationalism stems from the fact that people share something in common and thus they have a national identity. (Spencer, Wollman 2002) This common bond can come in many forms political, cultural and territorial. College Is A Essential Tool For Life Essay The research topic of the connection between students who are in college and the level of stress they inquire financially and generally has had a huge impact on society. College is a very essential tool for life. College is meant to learn and experience a variety of techniques to use in your everyday life. On the other hand, college can become a very stressful place, whether it s because of your financial status or in general. The increase in responsibilities after transitioning from a young adolescent to an adult is a cause of stress. There are two different sources of stress, external stress and internal stress. External stress is getting a bad grade on an assignments/test or relationship problems. Internal stress are motivators that put high expectations on one s self to accomplish or achieve something. Financial stress is worrying about how you are going to pay for something and where you will get the money to pay for it. In academic communities financial stress can cause low performance in school work. Also, stress can cause the low rate of attendance in the academic communities. The amount of workload assignment wise and job wise can significantly bring stress due to the balance between the two. It can help us understand the dynamics of macromolecule aggregation, nanoparticle self assembly, and the effects of electric and magnetic fields on that process. This bears significant implications for biotechnological applications, especially in light of recent research regarding the use of magnetic heating to eradicate bacteria from surfaces within the human body. People get metal parts implanted all the time to compensate for injuries or very old body parts. These pieces range from metal plates to pins to artificial joints, but they all serve relatively similar purposes holding bones together. The problem that comes from this from time to time is that bacteria inside a patient s body eventually find these metal surfaces and seek refuge on or in them. Ordinarily, physicians recommend surgery to get rid of those bacteria, but new research suggests that surgery may no longer be necessary; rather, it may be possible to get the same result with the non invasive alternative of magnetic heating. These bacteria can be very difficult to remove because they form biofilms thin sheets that form a viscous, protective membrane of sorts like plaque on enamel. Even though this only happens to ... • 20. In The Long Run The Oppressor In his novel, A People s History of the United States: 1492 Present, Howard Zinn offers readers a new and unexpected take on American history. First published in 1980, A People s History is often received with much controversy and criticism, as Zinn does something that historians rarely do: he openly rejects the narrative of American history as told by a European perspective. The first chapter of the novel mainly serves to illustrate two of Zinn s most fundamental ideas: one, that he, as a historian, chooses to write from the lesser known perspective of groups whose voices have been suppressed; and two, that it is necessary for people to ask themselves to what extent is it right to justify atrocities in the name of human progress. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zinn does not fully explain what he means when he states this; instead, he leaves it open ended for one to interpret as they may choose. It is possible, however, to infer that the meaning of the oppressor is also a victim is a lesson that Zinn wishes to communicate: when a society decides that oppression and control are the elements that define power and human progress, it unknowingly becomes victim to the repetition of history that it refuses to learn from (page 10). Far too often, we, as a society, learn what Zinn calls a sense of moral proportion, in which we downplay atrocities and emphasize the importance of human progress, which not only serves to justify what has been done, but also blinds us to the fact that history has and will repeat itself again (page 9). We accept genocides and other forms of violence, as seen with the Native Americans, and bury them within a mass of other facts in order to rationalize that such events were necessary for the human race to progress. The very fact that Zinn s novel sparked such controversy when it was first published clearly demonstrates that, to at least some extent, people were averse to being exposed to a perspective on history that does not glorify the Europeans and reveals extreme cruelty and brutality on both sides. Considered to be unsuccessful, Rehoboam is known for dealing with the revolt of Israel and facing issues with the Shishak of Egypt. Abijam and Asa of Judah have been depicted as father and son and also brother by interpretations found in 1 Kings 15. 2 Chronicles clears some confusion by altering Abijam s name to Abijah, and Abijah is known for military skill and capturing Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron. Asa is known for religious reform and military successes such as capturing the cities of Dan and Hazor. Other historians say that The Jones Shafroth Act of 1917 made it a US Territory. Some might also say it was World War I. This essay will tell you about, Puerto Rico, all three things, and also which one is truly correct. Before starting to truly explain things, let me explain how this whole thing started. At the beginning is how Puerto Rico was discovered. Puerto Rico was found by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas, when he was trying to find his fort on Hispaniola called La Navidad which was destroyed. Then Juan Ponce de Léon stumbled across Puerto Rico again while on his search to find the mystical Fountain of Youth . Then for the next three hundred years, Spain will rule Puerto Rico with an iron fist until 1898 when the Spanish American War broke out and the USA got Puerto Rico for themselves. The Spanish American War was a three month war that started on April 25, 1898 and ended on August 12, 1898. Lars Brownworth Lost To The West Summary Once a Frankish king, Charlemagne was declared the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire in the West by Pope Leo III, whom he defended in a vicious legal battle (153). This, of course, incited fury in the East, as the Pope did not truly possess this authority, causing the divide between the Eastern and Western Christianity to grow further and become more volatile (154). Consequently, when Charlemagne sent a marriage proposal to Irene and Irene considered accepting, her subjects quickly overthrew her (154). Most Americans don t understand, nor do Americans see how the factories and sweatshop workers are affected by the unsafe environments, the illegal use of children, and the minimal pay with no compensation. Americans take for granted the pay received, and the type of working conditions that are set in order to for the business to operate. First, many have argued that Thatcherism contributed significantly into economic recovery of Britain after the war. This is mainly visible in its quest to control the rate of inflation which was a success. However, this success has been criticized for the huge level of unemployment it brought with it. The policy also managed to instill competition in the economy which facilitated growth of the economy. This was necessary to salvage the image which was heavily dented on the international scene. With these efforts, the conservative party had managed to win back the trust of its citizens. Thatcherism also brought the theory of monetarism. Through this theory, they discovered that inflation was caused by injecting excess money into the economy by printing money and this situation could be controlled by using the instruments of monetary policy to mop up the excess money supply. However, some economists have argued that the negative impacts of this policy overshadowed its positive contributions hence the system is considered a failure (Harvey 2010, ... Bear Hunting in New Jersey Bear Hunting in New Jersey The head of the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency has resumed the black bear hunts that had been paused for five years due to over hunting. In this time, the population of black bears has risen once again to a safe level for hunting, and the republican controlled government has allowed hunters to resume their hunting. Some wildlife activists see the hunts as unnecessary and cruel, and wish to defend the bears. This belief is opposed by the hunting organizations that have pointed to a long history of hunting, as well as the potential danger that black bears present, as points that may hinder their cause. I am on the side of the hunters, as I think that the government s job is to make sure both the bears are protected and the hunters are happy, and therefore a happy medium must be reached. Too many black bears can be dangerous for the residents of New Jersey. (Nuwer, 2011) They are migrating animals, and often enter into human neighborhoods in search of food often found in people s waste bins. This has led the NRA and other hunting groups to petition the state government on the issue of bear hunting for safety. Analysis Of Nothing Gold Can Stay By Jane Flanders The world has several great poets and numerous mind blowing works, each with its own way of portraying its own message using symbolism to represent lessons of everyday life. Jane Flanders wrote the poem named Cloud Painter she shows the world from an artistic way, using a painter and his canvas to help the reader picture the true meaning behind the words and images created. Robert Frost takes on the same idea, but uses a less complex example so that it makes his work easy to understand while not revealing the actual meaning of the poem. The special chances that are there from the start are often not appreciated but the ones that have been worked for do not tend to lose their value over time. Robert Frost on the other hand used a more fictional approach in Nothing Gold Can Stay . Nature s first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. This couplet has one key theme that not only lies in the word choice but in the writing, itself. The start of spring is when all the new flowers blossom and the leaves on trees become greener. The start of something fresh and lovely is the main point in this line but this is also a way of saying that the best things that are free are given without any strings or repercussions are taken advantage of. The next two lines Her early leaf s a flower; But only so an hour. In other words, the possibilities that are given throughout life can also be taken away just as fast. In Frost s poem, he uses the garden of Eden to help the reader to imagine where this idea is heading. In the first sentence Frost states that Natures first green is gold this represents the very first blooming of flowers and the return of the green leaves during the springtime which when applied to life, it ... The Great Lakes Region By Richard White Richard White provides a refreshing perspective on the Great Lakes region during the colonial and early national periods in regards to the developing relationships between the intrusive French, British, Americans and the indigenous Native Americans. The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and Republics in the Great Lakes Region effectively links Native American history to broader themes in American history. He presents a convincing argument of how the Middle Ground, a place the French called the pays d en haut, allowed for mutual accommodation and an acculturative social solution to develop out of the misunderstandings and the new meanings given to older institutions. White looks to this area to show how Native Americans and Europeans together constructed a complex and dynamic world that became the multiethnic society of early America. White has written a remarkable book that further enriches the historiography of the Great Lakes region and gives us a fuller understanding of this complicated world that underwent profound historic change. White presents an interesting introduction that demonstrates the extremely complex subject and multiple influences that defined the middle ground. This, however, is a very primitive description of the phenomenon of pain. Injury or inflammation of a bodily tissue can lead to profound changes in the internal chemical environment. Damaged cells discharge their intracellular components, releasing substances, notably ATP, potassium ions (K+) and acetyl chloine (ACh). Some of these contents act on nociceptors directly, triggering an action potential which will end up in the brain. Other components released from the cells can sensitize the terminals, making them hypersensitive to further stimuli. This allows a pain signal to be transmitted when a seemingly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This hinders the production of the neurotransmitter ACh, resulting in fewer action potentials being transmitted down the neurones and hence a numbing effect is experienced. It is thought that morphine and other narcotics may exploit this natural mechanism that has evolved for the similarly shaped enkephalins. Heroin is a far more powerful drug than morphine, possibly because the drugpasses the blood brain barrier far more readily. The heroin is then hydrolysed to morphine once inside the body and so the pain killing mechanism is likely to be very similar to the way in which morphine works. However, it is common to develop tolerance and desensitization towards opioids as the opioid receptors are continually used. This has been termed the cascade of cellular adaptation (Strelzer J, 2001; Borgland SL, 2001). Furthermore, animal studies have suggested that, in the case of morphine taken during chronic pain, not only tolerance is acquired towards its analgesic effects, but also an increased sensitivity towards pain actually develops (Ibuki T, et al, 1997; Celerier E et al, 2001). Non narcotic analgesics are the household drugs used to treat moderate pains. These include paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen. There are very few noticeable effects beyond treating specific pains (in contrast to narcotics, when a feeling of well being takes over the body). Typical causes of an economic crisis, such as: high debt, large current account deficit, deregulation of the banking industry without proper controls in place, and a semi fixed exchange rate are all at the forefront of the nation s current economic state. 8. • 44. Myth of Propaganda in the Balkans and Rwanda Essay Mass Manipulation and Genocide: The Myth of Propaganda in the Balkans and Rwanda War and conquest have been among the most enduring traits of humankind throughout the ages. While we would all like to believe that we are, by nature, a peaceful species, we still understand there are some things worth fighting for, and given the appropriate context, there are some things worth killing for. As reasoning beings, we hope that if violence is the only option it is for a clear and legitimate purpose. That is why it was so confounding to hear of such heinous acts of senseless violence as stories from Germany began to emerge after World War II. The world shuddered as the actions of Hitler s henchmen attempting to eradicate entire ethnic groups ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, the propaganda employed through various media was instrumental in the rise of nationalism and the fomenting of fear and ethnic hatred in the Balkans and in Rwanda. It is clear that propaganda is a powerful tool and its implementation played a significant role in these conflicts, but the extent of that role is less certain. Does propaganda alone have the power to incite genocide and ethnic cleansing? Are certain media more effective in achieving extremist goals than others? Could we stop genocides before they start by identifying and targeting outlets of propaganda? As this paper will demonstrate, the social, political and economic climates of nations in question in this case, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia determine how effective state sponsored propaganda is at crystallizing divisions among people and inspiring one group to attempt to eradicate another. Before we can understand how propaganda operates, it is important to define exactly what we mean by propaganda. The term itself dates back to 1622 when Pope Gregory XV established a papal bull with the title Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fedei, an effort to counter the Protestant movement. Thus from its inception, propaganda was employed to establish a sense of otherness within populations, inspiring negative reactions among Protestants and positive feelings among ... • 45. Climate Analysis On Climate Archives There is significant evidence from studies based on climate archives that the Earth s climate about 10 000 years ago was very different from the present climate; it has changed a lot since the last glacial period which ended about 10 000 12 000 years ago (Chappell, 1998). Hence, about 10 000 years ago the Earth was buried under ice sheets and it was much cooler than present temperatures (see Figure 1, Appendix) (Chappell, 1998). The Earth that has been cycling between cold and warm climates for ages and is currently in the interglacial period where it has slowly become warmer along with a rise in sea level (Watts, 2009). There are many climate archives which can help scientists study past climates and their development over time. Climate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Corals were first discovered about 200 million years, however most have grown over the last 10 000 years. Therefore, corals are great climate archives to use in order to study the climate from the last 10 000 years. Corals also have a wide array of climatic history stored within them (Introduction: Coral Reefs, 2015). They have a long lifetime and rapid growth which makes them ideal climate archives for studying the past climate (Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, 2015). Along with the corals there is the foraminifera; also referred to as sea floor fossils. These sea floor fossils are often found in sediment cores and can reveal a variety of things about the past climate through ocean currents, temperature and oxygen ratios. Also these fossils are the most common source of paleoceanographic proxies, making them easily available (Kucera, 2007). Hence, foraminifera or sea floor fossils are an ideal climate archives for studying the past climate from about 10 000 years ago alongside corals. Information about the past climate can not only help us understand our present climate but can also help predict our future climate trends. Corals, which are one of the climate archives been discussed, are living organisms who produce a calcium carbonate skeleton to make themselves look like rocks. The calcium carbonate bands found in corals help form permanent records of seasonal and annual climate changes. Corals are a type of biotic proxy; which are proxies based on the ...
