Borderlands By Gloria Anzaldua Analysis
Borders Beyond the Borderlands.
There are many concepts that Gloria Anzaldua discusses in Borderlands/La Frontera: The New
Mestiza, but there are two that stuck out: linguistic terrorism, nephantla, and la facultad. These
concepts have affected Women such as ElviraPrietoo and Norma Cantu to write from their personal
experiences. To embrace their roots, they came from and never forget the events that shaped them into
the women they are today. Perhaps expand a bit on your introduction. For instance, offer some context
of Borderlands and the other two texts and then teases / a tease / the tease out what it is you will
discuss the themes of memory and identity a bit more.
Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldua is full of personal narratives detailing
the visible and invisible borderlands that exist within a race, gender, sexuality, and spirituality. Her
essays and poems are based on her own personal experiences as a Chicana and lesbian activist.
Through her writing, she challenges the true definition of the borderlands as more than a simple line
that divides different cultures. It calls for those who are oppressors to change their attitudes and show
support to those of the borderlands. By writing in both English and Spanish she expresses how one
language would not be enough to describe her Chicana literature.
Anzaldua refers to the word Borderlands as the area which is in a state of limbo between Mexico and
the United States. It is a place that is

Essay on The Training and Job Information on Carpenters
Introduction
Ever wonder who had built your home? Carpenters did. They build many different kinds of things,
from door frames to houses. You have to complete high school, and then get some training in order to
become one. The carpenters in Alaska get a higher pay than those in the lower 48, which is nice.
Carpenters do many types of things, like cutting lumber and installing insulation. Being a carpenter is
very important because they build the homes of Americans.
Training and Education
In order to become a carpenter, you have to finish school. The minimum requirement is a high school
diploma. After that, you can get an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is when you work on the job
with experienced workers. You learn the basics of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carpenters have many tasks, and it is important that they carry them out.
Skills Many different types of skills are required to be a carpenter. In order to be a successful worker,
they have to have good math problems. Most of the time, workers have to cut and shape materials to
fit in perfectly, which requires math. Another important part is that they have to make them quick. If a
person is slow, then everybody else can be waiting for them. That would slow the process down, and
they may get laid off to get more training. Manual dexterity is a very significant part of carpentry.
People have to have good eye hand coordination. If someone is too clumsy, they can possibly injure
someone. They have to be able to handle high powered tools and machines. Another thing a person
needs is good stamina. Most of the time, workers have to lift heavy equipment and materials. Being
strong will keep one from getting an injury. Having good problem solving skills is important too.
Sometimes, plans change. They will need to figure out how to solve problems, and modify building
plans. A big thing that carpenters need to know about is raw materials and the costs and delivery of
them. Knowing these can make big difference in expenses when working on a project. One thing
carpenters are always working with: tools. There are many different types of tools. In order to be a
carpenter is that you need to know about the different types of tools

Essay on The Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights is a list of limitations on the power of the government. Firstly, the Bill of Rights is
successful in assuring the adoption of the Constitution. Secondly, the Bill of Rights did not address
every foreseeable situation. Thirdly, the Bill of Rights has assured the safety of the people of the
nation. Successes, failures, and consequences are what made the Bill of Rights what they are today.
Firstly, the Bill of Rights has guaranteed the adoption of the Constitution. James Madison proposed
the Bill of Rights to the First Federal Congress on June 8, 1789 (Primary Documents 1). The First
Federal Congress then proposed the twelve amendments to the constitution to the state legislatures
(Constitutional Politics in Ohio 1). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An agreement was finally made to create the Bill of Rights to help secure ratification of the
Constitution itself. Secondly, the Bill of Rights did not address every foreseeable situation. One failure
of the Bill of Rights was the first amendment of the original Bill of Rights. The amendment concerned
the number of constituents for each Representative and was never ratified. It said that once the House
has one hundred members, it should not go below one hundred, and once it reached two hundred, it
should not go below two hundred (Mount 1). Another failure was The Anti Title Amendment. This
amendment said that any citizen who accepted or received any title of nobility from a foreign power,
or who accepted without the consent of Congress any gift from a foreign power, by would no longer
be a citizen (Mount 1). Basically, this said that if someone received or accepted something from a
foreign power, that person would no longer be a citizen. The Anti Title Amendment was submitted to
the States in 1810 and was ratified by only twelve states, the last being in 1812 (Mount 1). Thirty eight
states are required to ratify to add an amendment. The Slavery Amendment was another failure of the
Bill of Rights. This amendment was not ratified because the House did not want any amendment to be
made to the Constitution which would authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere,
within any state, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of

Cultural Methods And Forms Of The Bantu Migration In Africa
The Bantu migration is the dispersal of the Bantu people from the region of Cameroon and the Congo
area. The word Bantu does not refer to the people of the African expansion, but rather the African
languages belonging to the people in the Niger Congo. Cultural influences that occurred, due to the
migration of the Bantu people, laid out the foundation for other Sub Saharan societies. Historians have
used the collective information found by archeologists and other historians in order to draw
conclusions about the Bantu Migration. Linguistics, agriculture, and different types of art have been
the evidence needed to identify the culture and the specific patterns of movement, during this period.
Bantu speaking farmers are known to have spread through the Congo forests by the first millennium.
The rapid spread of the Bantu people became evident in the fifth century; the iron working and crop
cultivation of pumpkins, melons, and beans had become wide spread in central, eastern, and southern
Africa. Although crop cultivation is an efficient way to track movement patterns, this paper will focus
on the linguistics, genetics, and various art forms used to track the dispersal. Oral communication used
by the Bantu people was one of the only ways to relay information. Verbal communication and the
study of linguistics, in the instance of the Bantu Migration can be obscured because over familial
generations and time the language changes, forms its own dialect, and develops for

How Did Etienne Gregg s Use Of Trapped Animals In The Bayous
Etienne Provost was born in 1735 in Chamly, Quebec. Provost passed away July 3, 1850. Etienne was
described as a short, fat, and a very round man. Around 1841 he was involved in the St. Louis,
Missouri fur trade, also trapping in Spanish territory. He trapped animals in the bayous and in the
Colorado Front Range. Provost formed a partnership with Francois LeClerc in Taos, Mexico to trap in
the Uinta Basin, the Green River drainage, and the central portion of Utah. In October, 1824 Provost s
trappers encountered a band of Shoshone Indians near what we call the Great Salt Lake. Provost was
actually imprisoned in Santa Fe by the Spanish on both of his expeditions. It took him 35 years to
build his house in St Louis, Missouri. Provost traveled

The Third Wish, By Joan Aiken
Many stories that have wishes have something about how the wish do not go very well. There are
stories such as The Third Wish by Joan Aiken that are almost based off of this. The story The Third
Wish, exemplifies the theme be careful what you wish for in almost every way.
In the story the main character, Mr. Peters has some run ins with some swans, and they show being
careful what you wish for. One run in with a swan is when he is driving along a road when he comes
across a swan stuck in a bush. He rescues the swan and gets three wishes. When he rescues the swan
the swan tells him, Well I have yet to hear of the human being who made any good use of his three
wishes they mostly end up worse off than they started. This tells us that many

Psychedelic Drugs
Psychedelic drugs have been used by people around the globe for the last few decades. They re known
for their abilities to alter perception and invoke behavioral alterations in people who consume the
drugs, such as psilocybin (magic mushrooms), DMT, and Lysergic acid diethylamide(LSD). In 1958
(Moore, Hatada, Dominos) it was found that when consumed by humans, N N Dimethyltryptamine
(DMT), causes visuals that make up of colorful, luminous, rapid changing visual illusions and
hallucinations. Ingestion of a psychedelic drugs such as DMT influences the cortex, optic lobes, and
thalamus, as well as effecting sleep. A possible explanation for visual hallucination while under the
influence of Dimethyltryptamine was presented by a research conducted in 1979. In mammals, such as
cats, N N Dimethlytrptamine was studied with respect to the visual system. It was found that DMT
caused a deceased amplitude response evoked by the stimulation of the optic chiasm. The depression
of electrically evoked potentials in the visual system are DMT dose dependent. The inhibition of the
induced potential was recorded at the lateral geniculate nucleus and at the visual cortex. ... Show more

It is a structurally similar to serotonin and melatonin. There is considerable evidence suggesting that
Dimethyltryptamine acts as a non selective serotonin agonist (5HT 1A and 5HT 2A). It was seen in the
prefrontal cortex of mice that serotonergic hallucinogens interrupt cortical synchrony in the low
frequency range. Mice that were administered DMT experience a reduced serotonin release in the
prefrontal cortex via the 5HT 1A receptor. Another revelation observed was the reduction of low
frequency cortical oscillations in somatosensory, auditory, and visual in wildtype mice. DMT fully
prevented the effect of knockout serotonin 2A receptors by the 5HT 1A receptor agonist. (Riga,

Personal Themes In A Stolen Life By Jaycee Dugard
She was alone, she was scared, she had no idea that her normal life would be taken away for the next
eighteen years... and hope is the sole reason that she survived it. For kidnap victim, Jaycee Dugard, the
word hope brings back a flood of emotions and memories. In her chilling memoir, A Stolen Life , she
describes a very personal experience in which she encountered at age eleven, where she soon learned
just how important hope was. Dugard never saw it coming when a man named Phillip Garrido stole
her from that bus stop on just another normal morning... or so she thought. Soon after, he took her
away and held her hostage in his backyard for almost two decades. Interestingly enough, she has
miraculously turned this cruel situation into a very inspiring story. Therefore, she proves to us that
even if you re living out your worst nightmare, you still have something to live for. For this reason,
Dugard puts together a descriptive setting, her absurd relationship with her abductor, and personal
symbols to illustrate how just a little hope can be the essence of surviving any situation life throws at
you. For starters, it could have been the easiest thing in the world for Jaycee to lose hope by becoming
discouraged by the filthiness and disgust of the environment she was held captive in for all of those
years. She paints a picture of just how unpleasant her setting was by describing how The desk had lots
of junk on it...to the left of the door there is a toilet with a built in

Why Is Andrew Carnegie A Hero
Andrew Carnegie was a hero amongst a few people but it can be debatable towards others. Andrew
Carnegie was born in November 1835, in the attic of a weaver s cottage in Dunfermline, Scotland.
While he was growing up, his family was poor, so his family decided to move to the United States, he
started working at the age of twelve. As he got older he got promoted into different positions and
because of this he was able to build up his own business and bought out his competition. Could
Andrew Carnegie be considered a hero? A hero is a person that does something astonishing such as
provide courage, integrity and intelligence. Andrew Carnegie was not considered a hero in three areas
of his life: business, money and social.
The first area in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shinn s point is to see the increase and decrease of production costs and selling prices. This evidence
helps explain why Carnegie was not a hero because Shinn is only talking about the production price
and the selling cost of steel rails. For example, in The Saturday Globe it illustrates how Carnegie had
Double Role (The Saturday Globe, 1892). In making this comment, the Saturday Globe is trying to
say that Carnegie was playing two roles because he could give away money and still made notices
about wages being reduced. This demonstrates how he wasn t a hero because he would reduce the
wages of his employees to give that away. Money was one of the many reasons why Carnegie wasn t a
hero because of how he took away wages from his employees to give it away. Although money was
important to him, he still felt that he needed to donate it to the public.
The third area in which Carnegie wasn t a hero was social. Garland states, Everywhere where grimy
men with sallow and lean faces (Garland, 1894). Garland is trying to prove the difference between two
people s payments. This doesn t help answer the question of Carnegie being a hero because it s talking
about people s pay. According to Carnegie, Why should men leave great fortunes to their children
(Carnegie,1889). Carnegie is saying that rich man that leave money should be disgraced because they

Vark Questionnaire Paper
VARK is a questionnaire of about 16 questions that provides people with their preference of learning
style. The learning styles that VARK offers can help people develop additional and effective strategies
for learning and for making your communication skills better. The styles that this questionnaire
determines are Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic, or you can be multimodal which means you
have a multiple learning preference. In this paper I will summarize the results received after taking the
questionnaire and the other learning styles. After taking the questionnaire it was learned that some
individuals, such as this author are multimodal learners. What multimodal means is you have multiple
preferences. Majority of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last learning style that VARK offers is read/write learning style. You prefer to write things down
and receive handouts on new material. The library is a preferred area of study, and choice when
gathering information on a topic.
After completing the VARK questionnaire this author feels that the results were pretty accurate. She
feels that she learns best when applying areas of study to real life experience and to personal
experiences. She also finds herself writing many things down, high lighting, and drawing out things
when trying to remember something. This author took another survey on another website to see what
the preferred learning style showed. After completion it showed this author is a visual and
tactile/kinesthetic learner, which matched the VARK results.
In the future there are a few things this author needs to work on to improve her study habits. Although
this writer has in the past used the learning styles previously mentioned, she may have not been using
them correctly. Why highlighting can help to pinpoint the main idea or important information, there is
a thing as highlighting too much. This author needs to be able to determine what is pertinent and when
something is not as important. In the past she has highlighted too much information, and perhaps has
highlighted the same information twice. Also note taking so be minimized, and not writing everything
down, which she has done in the past.

Every situation and every person you come into contact with and meet has been socialized in a certain
way, and the root of this behavior lies in sociology. How we react to certain social situations, how we
interpret or read another person s actions, how we respond to other individuals, are all dependent on
sociology. From this course, I hope to better be able to understand why people act and behave the way
they do. I hope to learn more about significant social issues that are widespread throughout the world
today and about social forces to help bring about change. On a deeper level, I want to understand why
sociology is that window to being able to think on a different level, and the key to understanding those
underlying human connections/behavior. For example, why is there a mental health stigma? Why do
stereotypes exist? Where do social norms and social constructs stem from? Why does society breed
the type of mentality where photoshop and runway models are the standards of beauty? All of the
answers to these questions lie in sociological theories and concepts. I also hope that this course can
help me to understand other social problems, such as racism, crime, poverty, violence, sexism, and
how to contribute to their solutions. I am eager to learn more about sociology throughout the semester,

Eat Drink Man Woman By Ang Lee Essay
Taiwanese born American filmmaker Ang Lee tells the story of a closely knit family with repressed
emotions in Taipei, Taiwan during a time of rapid modernization. Aging master chef Chu, Old Chu,
who has lost his sense of taste and his three unmarried adult daughters have a tradition of eating
elaborate Sunday dinners together. The eldest is Jia Jen a schoolteacher and a converted Christian. Jia
Chien, is the beautiful middle daughter who is a successful businesswoman. Finally, the youngest is
Jia Ning, a college student who also works at a fast food restaurant. Initially this tradition is portrayed
as a tortuous experience which the three daughters dread, but later becomes an important forum for the
family s life changing announcements. Using food as a medium Lee s film Eat Drink Man Woman
(1994) explores the themes of gender roles, family and globalization.
The title of this film Eat Drink Man Woman expresses an immediate introduction into the issues of
gender and authority. Which greatly shape the role of woman in the professional world of food which
is a predominantly male industry. This is shown through the all male staff at the Grand Hotel the
restaurant that old Chu works at. In the Grand Hotel, Chu and his best friend Old Wen are seen as two
of the most important figures within the kitchen. This is communicated in the scene when Chu is
eating his traditional Sunday dinner with his family and he gets called into work. As he strides
confidently in, he is swarmed by men

Promise Of Promise
The Promise of a Pencil
Adam Braun s journey to create his non profit Pencils of Promise was not an easy one. With that in
mind, there are many ways in which his struggles and the mantras at the start of each chapter

metaphorically.
At the beginning of the book Adam questioned what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, this is
something I ask myself on a daily basis. That led to him joining a program called Semester at Sea. He
would end up backpacking through several developing countries for 100 days. Students who were part
of the program were transported there on a cruise ship. The vessel was relatively new and it was to

If Manuel s answers demonstrate imminent danger, emergency services should be called immediately
and all information gathered from the initial conversation should be documented.
For the purposes of this paper, an assumption that Manuel is not in immediate danger is made, and he
chooses to sign a written contract stating that he will not make any attempt on his life before having
another discussion with a counselor. While a written contract cannot guarantee that Manuel will not
choose to harm himself during this period, adolescents who sign this type of contract will typically
comply. At this point, a follow up meeting is scheduled, which will allow time to consider the
assessment information in formulating the scope of the problem, and provide intervention strategies
for Manuel s continued treatment (McWhirter et al., 2017).
Consultation and Supervision In order to provide Manuel with the best therapeutic approaches,
colleagues should be consulted, who are willing to question the intervention strategies from not only a
therapeutic perspective, but also keeping in mind ethical and legal guidelines (McWhirter et al., 2013).
One method of consultation that is proving to be helpful is the formation of consultations groups who

The Effects Of Social Oppression
Throughout our history as a nation, individuals with disabilities have been viewed in many ways.
Most were held to a very negative perspective for many years and some are held to that same
perspective to this day. Unfortunately, the portion of our population that live with a physical or mental
disability have had to deal with inequality and oppression. So, why does this unjust treatment or
perspectives of these individuals continue to happen? What can our society do to change it?
By definition, a perspective is a particular attitude toward or a way of regarding something; a point of
view (Oxford Dictionaries), therefore everyone has a perspective toward every aspect of their life and
everyone or everything in their life. While there may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul Dodenhoff wrote an article titles Five Faces of Oppression and in the article he uses Iris Marion
Young s concept that stated the five elements were oppression, exploitation, marginalization, cultural
imperialism, and violence (Dodenhoff, 2016). From this article, there can be a new point of view
gained on the idea that our culture has created its own hierarchies of superiority and inferiority
(Dodenhoff, 2016). While this system is primarily unspoken, it still exists when you look at it from the
stand point that there is the upper class, middle class, and lower class, in addition to the brains, the
jocks, the populars, and the disabled. In the online article Higher Education and Disability, the author
discusses that there is a current trend that allows individuals with disabilities to be views as accepted
and valued instead of negatively seen as a special group (Leake Stodden, 2014, 399). In this same
article they state, This is a matter of concern in view of the widespread understanding in higher
education that students who feel socially accepted are more likely to persist and graduate than those
who do not, (Leake Stodden, 2014, 403). However, many individuals continue to treat the disabled

Touch Reaction Times
Visual, Auditory and Touch Reaction Times
Nick Marshall, Jack Wilson, Angus Newman: 8F 4 /6/2018
Introduction:
The purpose of this investigation is to examine the differences in reaction times when using different
stimuli. This investigation relates to the nervous and brain systems in the human body. When your
senses pick up clues from the outside world it takes a small amount of time for you to recognize the

Previous studies produced results that show that touch is the fastest, then auditory and finally visual
with the averagely slowest reaction time. This data suggests that visual stimuli cause the fastest
reaction, followed by auditory, and finally touch. The average in time for visual stimuli was 0.170
seconds. Previous results have evidenced that visual stimulus is the slowest, with an average time of
0.25 seconds. This experiment contradicts these results. The second fastest reaction time was caused
by an auditory stimulus. This produced an average reading of 0.176 seconds. This is similar to
previous results. However, there is a small discrepancy of 0.006 seconds between the previous results
and the results of this test. Finally, touch stimulus was the slowest in this experiment. This contradicts
previous results. In other tests the touch stimulus was the fastest at 0.15 seconds, whereas in this
experiment it was the slowest: 0.193 seconds. When gravity pulled the rulers to the mass of the earth,
it took time for the subject to recognise the movement and to react to it. These results contradict
previous experiments. The brain signals were processed on average more slowly than in previous
experiments. However, this experiment could have been unfair and biased. When the auditory and
touch tests were carried out, there was most likely a small amount of time between the call or touch
and the ruler being dropped. Also, test subjects were changed throughout the experiment. This would
have caused a discrepancy in the results, because different subjects may have had different personal
reaction times due to several factors. Also, the age could have had an effect. In this experiment we
used 13 year old test subjects. It is unknown of the age of the previous experiments. This experiment
could have been improved by conducting more tests over a range of people to calculate a more global

Descriptive Essay On A Lake House
My skin soaking up the sun, the water splashing at my face, and the constant wind in my hair are my
favorite little things while on the boat at my lake house. As I sit on the boat I take in every stress free
moment it offers to me. My lake house is on Shafer Lake, which is right in the middle of a small town
Monon, Indiana. Aside from living in Italy, this is where I picture my life after retirement. Lake time
is always a great time. Dad says.
Lake time is always a great time. My little brother repeats after him.
July 5th 2016 was a very hot and very sunny day, it felt as if my skin was being cooked. My family
and I went on the boat and hung out by the sand bar all morning. It s mixed emotions being on the
tube, considering the boat is going about 35 MPH, I m on a tube in the wavy lake, connected by a rope
to the boat. It s hard to focus on one emotion. I m excited and terrified all in one. Although we picture
lake time always being a great time, that July day was not a great time. I remember feeling as if our
bodies were giving in to the sun so we decided to call it a day around 2 PM. We approached the pier to
pull the boat in. Our dock is a parking space in water surrounded by a wooden pier on the sides and
the front. To prevent the boat hitting from the sides, my brothers, my mom, and I will grab the sides of
the pier as my dad steers it.
Jess wake up! My mother shouted in hopes I wake up to help dock the boat. My immediate response
was to stick my leg out of

I Have Lived 1, 000 Years By Livia Britton-Jackson
The Holocaust was one of our nation s most horrific and gruesome time period. Approximately six
million innocent Jewish people died. No one at this time knew it was such a terrible and nonsense
thing to do. I Have Lived 1,000 Years, written by Livia Britton Jackson, is about a young teenage girl,
Ellie, living through the Holocaust and not knowing what to expect. You should read this book
because it is a story of faith and love, it makes you not want to put the book down and because the
main character, Ellie, reminds me of you.
I Have Lived 1,000 Years is a true story that portrays the themes of faith and love, and occasionally to
never give up. This is showed when Ellie and her mother do not always get along, but when they
move Auschwitz, the most torturing concentration camp, her mother starts to love Ellie more. Back at
home, the two of them wouldn t always get along due to them not having many things in common. But
now that they are stuck together and are fighting for their lives they start to get along. The theme,
never give up, is also shown in this book when the two of them are extremely dehydrated and haven t
eaten in days. They go around camp to find water which they eventually find, Ellie continues to talk to
her mother about making it through to the next day, every day. ... Show more content on

the young teenage girl, Ellie, is about our age you will want to keep reading because it makes you

Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The...
We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting
rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply
this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some
utility in deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept.
A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both
players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of
such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other
players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a
utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in
predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann
Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary):
completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a
player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility
maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use.
While the axioms of payoff rationality clearly imply consistency of behaviour, since transitivity and

Westward Expansion Dbq Analysis
American Expansion DBQ Americans expanded their country in two different eras throughout history:
American imperialism and westward expansion. During both of these eras, the mid late 1800s and the
early 1900s, Americans believed that expansion was necessary and beneficial. To a great extent, late
nineteenth century and early twentieth century United States expansionism was a continuation of past
United States expansionism and to a lesser extent was it a departure. The similarities and differences
between American Imperialism in the early 1900s and Manifest Destiny in the mid late 1800s are
shown through political, economic, and moral motives of America and its government. America
wanted to establish itself as a global and political power on the same level as major European nations.

The Delivery On Mother Request
Caesarean Delivery on Mother Request
University of Mary
Fall 2016
Jennifer Escher
Caesarean Delivery upon request it is defined as a primary pre labor delivery on the request of the
mother in the absence of any maternal or fetal indications. Risks that are potential with a maternal
requested delivery will explain that hospital stay is longer, increased risk with respiratory issues with
mother and infant, and greater complications for the maternal with other pregnancies. Those
complications can include rupture of the uterus, implantation problems with next pregnancy and the
need for hysterectomy due to complications of prior caesarean. Potential benefits from a planned
caesarean can include decrease in complications from birth, decrease in the risk of hemorrhage and
transfusions from blood lost. Fewer complications from surgery and the fetal outcome from
respiratory complications is decreased. According to The American College of Obstetrics and
Gynecologists The belief that the absence of maternal and fetal indications for caesarean delivery, a
planned delivery is safe and appropriate and should be recommended to patients, delivery should not
be performed before a gestational age of 39 weeks . (2013). The ability of maternal requested should
not be available or recommended unless there is complication or effective pain management. This is
also not recommended for maternal that want to have more children. The risks outweighs the benefits

Events in Canadian History Essay
Before a person is well recognized in society, they need to go though a lot of trouble, discrimination,

The government of a country is always trying to get themselves in a higher position around the globe.
This is done so they are well established for their good qualities. Canada is also a name in the list of
such nations. Recognition was really hard for Canada to get because of the fact that it is one of the

A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology
The world of work in agriculture is in a process of rapid change. While change is by no means alien to
agriculture, something new has entered the arena which promises and/or threatens to fundamentally
alter agricultural practices across the globe. Biotechnology has already begun to be implemented
resulting in what may be important shifts in not only agricultural production, but indeed changes in the
very makeup of agricultural products themselves. This promises to pose serious challenges and/or

Essay about The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening
The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening
Many different symbols were utilized in Kate Chopin s The Awakening to illustrate the underlying
themes and internal conflict of the characters. One constant and re emerging symbol is the sea.
The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul
to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice
of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close
embrace (Chopin 25).

new eyes. Edna is filled with swelling emotions and reveals Sometimes I feel this summer as if I were

Edna s recollection of this event allows her to more clearly recognize her internal turmoil.
The link between Edna s awakening and the ocean becomes even clearer when after several attempts
she finally learns to swim. The first time she ventures out into the ocean alone is the first step toward
her independence. She panics when she realizes how far she has gone alone and fears drowning. This
incident represents Edna gaining control over her body and becoming more aware of her full potential.
The ocean helps her recognize that her body is her own and she awakens to her physical, mental, and
emotional capabilities. But that night she was like the little tottering, stumbling, clutching child, who
of a sudden realizes its powers, and walks for the first time alone, boldly and with overconfidence.
(Chopin 47). Edna s sudden terror in the middle of the ocean signifies that she may not be able to

High School Football Effects
When you think about football, what do you think about? Do you think about sportsmanship? Team
building? Or Friendship? Well that s great and all, but the fact is high school football has long lasting
negative effects on the mind and body, as well as many short term effects on the mind and body. There
are three main type of mental/physical effects that are consequences of playing football. First there s
the external physical effects, these are more along the lines of short term effects because they go away.
Second, there s internal physical effects, these affect the internal setup of the body, such as broken
bones and torn ligaments/muscles. Finally, there s mental effects, because injuries happen they can
sometimes confuse the player, and make him afraid of what might happen. Most of the time this is the
reason why those players get hurt again.
When you think of external injuries you may think cuts and bruises, and they re right but they could
be potentially life threatening cuts, and bruises that suggest the player broke a bone. In fact, over
500,000 high school football injuries occurred in the 2014 2015 school year alone. These injuries
could vary from deep cuts to broken noses. Also, in the 2014 2015 school year 11 high school students

Washington Irving Contributions
After the first wave of immigrants settled in America, it was up to the next generation, their children,
to isolate themselves from European cultures. One such child of the second generation was
Washington Irving, who felt inspired by both his country s history and stories of other cultures told by
fellow immigrants, to be the catalyst for a new wave of literature. Through the perfectly captured spirit
of America in his work, Washington Irving was the first to show the rest of the world what his country
had to offer to the literary world.
Washington Irving was born in New York City in 1783, named after General George Washington who
led the United States to winning the American Revolution. He was the youngest of eleven siblings to
Scottish English parents, and was taught by them at home. Under his brother Peter, an editor for the
newspaper The Morning Chronicle, Washington started writing for him at age 18. He published essays
and letters under the name Jonathan Oldstyle, the first of various pseudonyms used throughout his
literary career. In 1804, Washington left for France originally to inquire about his health, but was so
charmed by the people and culture that he decided to stay and travel to other countries in Europe like
the Netherlands, Wales, and Spain for the next two years. After returning to New York City, Irving
began practicing law, working as a clerk under Josiah Ogden Hoffman. As a child, he seemed to be
more of a daydreamer than a scholar, and was more interested in socializing and working with his
friends.
With his brother William and friend James Kirke Paulding, Washington started the Salmagundi
Papers, also known as The Opinions of Launcelot Langstaff in 1809. These essays served as satirical
periodicals to offset the other, gloomier news articles of the time. While short lived, it was met with
success and positive reviews, people appreciating its Swift esque sense of humor and style. That same
year, he was inspired to write History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the
Dutch Dynasty, a historical novel being his first major work under Diedrich Knickerbocker. Irving
broke away from writing a little while afterward, even enlisting to fight in the War of 1812 for some

3. Sustainable Product
Walmart consistently exams the how long the product can work, including the materials which is used
in them, the factories or farms where they were made to provide sustainable products. As the world s
largest supermarket retailer, Walmart makes an important impact on the way jewelry goes from
individuals to the market. They never stop searching the reform of the retailer. By integrating more
sustainable fibers into the clothing and textiles, Walmart is working to provide their customers with
both environmentally preferable and fashionable clothing options at the prices which they can afford.
Especially for its major products in the supermarket, such as agricultural and seafood, Walmart helps
farmers to expand their businesses like cluster farming, mariner reserves, to make more money and
reduce the environmental impact of farming. Conclusions

Will Allen tells his story he talks about the people who helped him along the way. He mentions how

not feel like that at all. I honestly felt like I was having a one on one conversation with Will Allen

In John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath, the journey of the Joad family is riddled with conflict. The

nature, and man vs. man. In the case of The Grapes of Wrath, man represents the Joad family as a
single unit. They experience conflict within the family itself, with the society they are coming from as
well as the one they are going to, and with nature and the elements. The man vs. man conflict is

The next big loss the family suffers is Noah leaving while the family is staying at the river. Ma, I got
somepin to tell ya. Noah he went on down the river. He ain t a goin on (294). This solidifies the solid
decline of the family state of the Joads. Family s fallin apart (294).
The final place the man vs. himself conflict arises is in the case of the blacklist. Tom s natural instinct
is to become a leader, and lead the people to revolt against the way the society is working in the west.
When the man Tom meets at the camp tells him that if he does that, he will be blacklisted, in which
case he won t be able to get work anywhere, and his family could quite possibly starve. Well, you jus
open your trap about us folks getting together, an you ll see. They take your pitcher an send it all over.
Then you can t get work nowhere. An if you got kids (336). This represents a man vs. himself conflict
because Tom has to resist his instincts to start a revolt, and just lay low.
The man vs. man conflict is usually a representations of a different conflict. In The Grapes of Wrath,
the people the Joad family has conflicts with are usually some sort of personifications of another area
of conflict, for example, society. When the Joads are staying at the hooverville, and Tom and Jim Casy
attack the police officer, they aren t attacking him because they have a disagreement with the man
himself as much as because that police officer

The Romantic period occurred some time from 1789 to 1832. It was a dramatic turning point in

Scott used this to pose questions about historical focus, evolution in literature, public thinking and
social opinions at the time. This is why one must understand the historical events taking place and the
consequent changes of opinion and approaches to society. It is suggested that the novel Waverley
revisits past pieces of Scottish literature, therefore maintaining an awareness of historical relevance.
By doing this Scott is able to use the past as a setting for his writings and while doing so, he is able to
reflect upon the time that Waverley was written and the proceeding eras. He was therefore able to
explore history and develop an understanding of the ideology and social expectations of the time.
This influential Novel was set in the Jacobite revolution in 1745, in which class clashes had begun to
form between those who wished the Stewards and their society to remain and those who wanted
change. This affected the message of the novel greatly. The early chapters of the novel show how,
despite family allegiance Edward maintains the Tory identity and reflects steward loyalist. These
political events within the novel reveal the ideological and historical importance s within the rebellion,
which would shape the nation and therefore future literature. Scott used complex ideological dynamics

Always evolving, always changing and always growing. Growing for the better or for worse? In the
18th century, Industrial advancements such as the steam engine seemed like a great idea, but as history
has proved countless times, had its faults. The Industrial Revolution impacted the world in a negative
way because of the loss of humanity, as seen in the Female Factory workers, Lowell Mills and
Chimney Sweeps. By the 1800s, people could earn higher wages in factories than on farms.
(Industrialization; Case study:Manchester, 723) Although these higher wages made in factories pushed
the industrial revolution forward, by being able to afford resources such as coal, factory life damaged
its workers and the community by created border between classes. For example, working conditions.
Working conditions during this time were extremely poor, and on average, a worker would spend 14
hours a day in factories. Factories were unsanitary, unsafe and generally not enjoyable. Factories were
seldom well lit or clean. Machines injured workers. A boiler might explode or a drive belt might catch
an arm. And there was no government program to provide aid in case of injury. (Industrialization;

Specifically, the Lowell Mill Girls. The Lowell Mills was one of the first known textile factories in the
industrial revolution, and brought advances in materials such as clothes. Francis Cabot Lowell,
founded The Lowell Mills in 1820, and started his production of Textiles, By 1840, the factories in
Lowell employed at some estimates more than 8,000 textile workers, commonly known as mill girls or
factory girls. (The Gilder Lehrman institute of American History) The Lowell Mill girls ranged in age
from 7 to 30 and faced the same common factory working conditions and wage obstacles, but as the
girls were younger, they had even less rights, lower wages and are known to have been torn from their
families and old farming

Greek Mythology And The Lightening Thief
It is a lovely day out, the bright sun shining down, the smell of beautiful flowers, the sounds of birds
chirping. Then, a chariot sweeps across a meadow, taking one unfortunate goddess, deep deep down to
the frightful underworld, to be seated by the King of the Dead,
Hades. Greek mythology is very interesting and can also be very interestingly weird. In the lightening
thief we see the very interesting part about Greek mythology. The lightening thief uses the modern day
society to tell the adventure packed story. In this essay I will give you an overview of Greek
mythology, along with a summary and analysis of The Lightening Thief.
Hero is the main theme of this story. We see the theme of hero throughout various parts of
2
the story. Courage, Love and sacrifice, and man vs. society all connect back to the idea of heroism.
Cultural and Historical Context
The Lightening Thief story is set in modern day time. Around 2000 2004 is where it all starts.
Although the setting is modern day, he author is telling Greek mythology, which began in
500 BC. Greek mythology is very interestingly different. Greek mythology also includes a number of
monsters and strange creatures such as the one eyed Cyclops in the Odysseus story, a gigantic boar in
the fabled Kalydonian hunt, sphinxes, giant snakes, fire breathing bulls and more. These creatures may
represent chaos and lack of reason, for example, the centaurs halfman and half horse. (Cartwright,
Greek Mythology.)

The Gift Of The Magi Essay
The Gift of the Magi
The Gift of the Magi is a short story about a young, less fortunate couple. Christmas is around the
corner, and Della is concerned about what to get for her cherished husband. She has been saving up
for months. Yet she only has 1.78 dollars. This puts her in a dilemma. She wants to get him something
honorable, but 1.78 dollars does not go very far. Sitting by the mirror, looking at her long brown hair.
Her hair was one of the two greatest treasures the couple had. The other treasure was Jim s watch,
which had a leather strap in replace of a chain. To afford Jim s present, she cut off her hair and sold it.
Later in the evening when Jim comes home, he is quite surprised to find his wife having cut off her
long precious hair. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While following her we get to see her points of view and access her thoughts. Besides describing
Della s actions and thoughts the narrator also has some observations regarding what is around her. In
some occations he talks directly to the reader. He uses a great deal of extra sentences to give the reader
a better feeling of what is going on. In reality the purpose of this story could be put in a shorter
context as it has an actual clear message. The title is corresponding to the content in the story. It also
has a symbolic meaning to it. The Magi is refering to the three wise men in the Bible. The three wise
men come baring gifts to the baby Jesus, which are concidered great gifts. In the three last sentences
we see a comparison between the story and the Bible. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they
are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the Magi. Also the narrator mentions King
Solomon when describing the value of Jim s watch. This indicates that Jim and Della chose wisely
when giving each other presents and found something of value to the other. They gave each other the
greatest gift of all, which according to the narrator makes them just like the

Screen Women Essay
Romantic comedy is undeserving of its reputation for being un feminist , since it holds a critical light
up to romantic bargaining, the sexual economy and shifting cultural standards . Discuss this statement
in relation to two post 1990 Hollywood romantic comedies.
The aim of this essay is to discuss why romantic comedy is undeserving of its reputation for being un
feminist . This statement will be discussed by close analysis of two post 1990 Hollywood romantic
comedies such as Something s Gotta Give (Nancy Meyers, 2003, USA) and Bridget Jones s Diary
(Sharon Maguire, 2001, UK).
Romantic comedy films which are also known as romcoms , are a sub genre of comedy films and
romantic films which can be traced back from the screwball ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hilary Radner has noted Nancy Meyers as being neo feminist because of her view of heterosexual
men whom she often portrays as being highly disadvantaged up to the point of suffering a disability
and her obvious interest in older women who are portrayed as very successful career women (2011).
Her films which are targeting the female audience, as Radner observes, are combining two major
disabilities as impediments to love: masculinity and advancing age. Meyer based her film Something s
Gotta Give on her own experience as a singleton in her fifties, making Diane Keaton an even bigger
star persona who won a Golden Globe, an NBR Award and also a Golden Satellite Award for her role
in the film, as Erica. Keaton s character Erica Barry is thin and fit with a natural look and mid length
hair. When she appears in her date dress which is a classic little black dress (LBD was highly
popularized by Chanel) she catches the eye of both Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) and Julian Mercer
(Keanu Reeves). Radner claims that Erica functions as an alter ego of director Nancy Meyers whose
stylistic choices somehow displace Keaton s established persona, as Keaton herself stated Clearly,
Erica is more Nancy than me (Hilary Radner, 2011: 175). The film tells the story of Erica, a divorced
playwright in her fifties who falls in love with her daughter s much older boyfriend, Harry Sanborn
who is a playboy known for dating only young women. Doctor Julian

Ashura
Larkin recalled a past life almost perfectly, but since that wasn t enough for him he had an out of body
vision. I swear he s probably going to kill himself on his own; I wish I knew way his past lives are
coming so easily now, he knows about Egypt and Japan, what s next his time in the army in WW2,
who knew apparently not me.......
Larkin
I know all of my past lives now so there s more than Ash thinks I know, but I not going to tell her that
it would be stupid of me to even think to ask her what it means. She would panic and probably talk in
ever foreign language we know, yes I fluent in all the languages apparently, even some dead ones. I
think I m supposed to save her so that s why I ve locked myself in my room all afternoon Ash said ...

Yes we re in the Bermuda Triangle, but Larkin doesn t need to know that it could put his life at risk as
well as the other angels that inhabit this island. The demon wasn t really a demon just an underling of
Lucifer s the real demons aren t as dumb, and hide themselves better. Some demon s former, or current
come to the Island, but they must know how to cross the magical barrier, like Cameron Briel, former
demon, or Roland Sparks, current demon and life of any party ever toughen, they are always welcome.
I am in charge of monitoring the barrier here since this is one of my most favorite escapes on the
accursed earth. I have been flying for minutes it seems, but as I look down at the annoying phone
Larkin carries I realize with a start that I have been out flying for over three hours, and that Larkin is
at the loft all alone. So, I make a big loop in the sky, and head back the safety of my loft and the love
of my life. With a quick descent I hit the ground running, and practically kick open the front door in
my haste to make sure he is unharmed and still in the safety of the loft. All I seen was him flipping

The Is Not The Right Word Essay
How many people will I kill in my lifetime? I am not some deranged serial killer with deadly
intentions, but I am a person that is aware that my actions could have ramifications that I cannot
possibly fathom. Perhaps kill is not the right word. How many deaths will I be responsible for by the
time I leave this earth? Much better. As Susan Griffin asserts in Our Secret , the lives of everyone on
this planet are much more intertwined that most like to believe. As are the lives of those who have
come before, and those that will come after. This is what she refers to as us being part of a larger
matrix . There is a particular scene in a favorite movie of mine, Good Will Hunting, which I think
perfectly sums up this idea. Why shouldn t I work for the N.S.A.? That s a tough one, but I ll take a
shot. Say I m working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break.
Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I m real happy with myself, cause I did my job
well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East.
Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred
people I never met, never had no problem with, get killed I understand that this is just a scene from a
movie, but I think that the premise stands. We all make thousands of decisions in a day, millions in a
lifetime. Some major, some minor. Who is to say that one of those countless

A Carbon Based Fuels And Uses Essay
Part A Carbon Based Fuels and Uses A carbon based fuel is any type of fuel thats energy is derived
from the burning of carbon or the oxidation of it. There are two main types of carbon based fuels,
Fossil fuels such as coal and Natural gas or Bio Fuels e.g Bioethanol. Bio fuels are procured from
recent growth of organic matter, the matter is harvested from crops or the cutting down of fast
growing trees and proceed into biofuels. Fossil fuels are from a prehistoric basis which the organic
matter has been subject to high pressure under the ground which has compressed it and turned the
matter into Coal and cried oil which can be later turned into petrols and propane via the process of
fractional distillation.
Coal;
Physical Properties
Colour; Coal is a non toxic solid found naturally in ground. It has black colour because of the carbon
in it. Coal is mainly a mix of carbon, water, some hydrogen, and oxygen. There are many different
kinds of coal. As well as the Hydrogen and Oxygen in coal, it contains some small amounts of
nitrogen, sulphur, and some other minerals. These are called impurities, the quality of the coal is
determined by the % of carbon in the coal the lower percentage means there are more impurities in the
coal.
Combustion Reactions/Chemical Properties
C + O2 → CO2 + Energy
Complete combustion usually occurs with CO2 as a byproduct for every 1kg coal burnt 3700g aprox
of CO2 gas produced. When burning, N2 and S2 gas are also produced because of the

Led Burning Essay
Retrofitting your home with LED Lighting If you re building or renovating and installing new light
fittings, you will no doubt have noticed that almost all new light fittings these days implement LEDs
(Light Emitting Diodes). LEDs, unlike the incandescent light bulbs that lit our homes for almost a
century, produce light via a chemical reaction. Incandescent lamps produce light by passing an
electrical current through a wire (tungsten) filament until it heats to high heat and glows almost white.
This is the reason incandescent bulbs produce the warm glow to which we have become accustomed
and, perhaps, even expect in our living areas after dark. A major advantage of LED lighting is that it
takes less energy to create the chemical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without some ventilation, the small amount of heat produced will be trapped and may cause the bulb
to fail. As with incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs come with different base options. Some of the most
common are: E27 standard screw in fitting B22 standard bayonet fitting E14 small screw in fitting
GU10 two broad pins with flattened ends MR16 two narrow pins The below chart may help you
identify the base fittings you need. Colour Temperature Put simply, colour temperature is the degree of
warmth (yellow redness) of the light emitted from the bulb. The colour of an incandescent bulb is
usually warm white and most LED bulbs do a good job of reproducing light in this spectrum. Since
LEDs don t produce light from heating a filament, they come in a wide range of other colours. For the
home warm white, pure white (similar in colour to cool white fluorescent tubes), and natural white
(somewhere between warm and pure white) are the commonly found colour temperatures. Which to
use is largely a matter of preference. Some thirty years ago, when I commenced work in the lighting
industry, cool white was considered useful only in commercial premises or certain work areas of the
home (i.e. garages, workshops and laundry rooms). These days cooler colours such as pure white and
natural white can bee seen throughout the home. Personally, I prefer warm white in living areas such
as living rooms and bedrooms. It is

  • 2. Borderlands By Gloria Anzaldua Analysis Borders Beyond the Borderlands. There are many concepts that Gloria Anzaldua discusses in Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, but there are two that stuck out: linguistic terrorism, nephantla, and la facultad. These concepts have affected Women such as ElviraPrietoo and Norma Cantu to write from their personal experiences. To embrace their roots, they came from and never forget the events that shaped them into the women they are today. Perhaps expand a bit on your introduction. For instance, offer some context of Borderlands and the other two texts and then teases / a tease / the tease out what it is you will discuss the themes of memory and identity a bit more. Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldua is full of personal narratives detailing the visible and invisible borderlands that exist within a race, gender, sexuality, and spirituality. Her essays and poems are based on her own personal experiences as a Chicana and lesbian activist. Through her writing, she challenges the true definition of the borderlands as more than a simple line that divides different cultures. It calls for those who are oppressors to change their attitudes and show support to those of the borderlands. By writing in both English and Spanish she expresses how one language would not be enough to describe her Chicana literature. Anzaldua refers to the word Borderlands as the area which is in a state of limbo between Mexico and the United States. It is a place that is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to be a successful worker, they have to have good math problems. Most of the time, workers have to cut and shape materials to fit in perfectly, which requires math. Another important part is that they have to make them quick. If a person is slow, then everybody else can be waiting for them. That would slow the process down, and they may get laid off to get more training. Manual dexterity is a very significant part of carpentry. People have to have good eye hand coordination. If someone is too clumsy, they can possibly injure someone. They have to be able to handle high powered tools and machines. Another thing a person needs is good stamina. Most of the time, workers have to lift heavy equipment and materials. Being strong will keep one from getting an injury. Having good problem solving skills is important too. Sometimes, plans change. They will need to figure out how to solve problems, and modify building plans. A big thing that carpenters need to know about is raw materials and the costs and delivery of them. • 4. Essay on The Bill of Rights The Bill of Rights is a list of limitations on the power of the government. Firstly, the Bill of Rights is successful in assuring the adoption of the Constitution. Secondly, the Bill of Rights did not address every foreseeable situation. Thirdly, the Bill of Rights has assured the safety of the people of the nation. Successes, failures, and consequences are what made the Bill of Rights what they are today. Firstly, the Bill of Rights has guaranteed the adoption of the Constitution. James Madison proposed the Bill of Rights to the First Federal Congress on June 8, 1789 (Primary Documents 1). The First Federal Congress then proposed the twelve amendments to the constitution to the state legislatures (Constitutional Politics in Ohio 1). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An agreement was finally made to create the Bill of Rights to help secure ratification of the Constitution itself. Secondly, the Bill of Rights did not address every foreseeable situation. One failure of the Bill of Rights was the first amendment of the original Bill of Rights. The amendment concerned the number of constituents for each Representative and was never ratified. It said that once the House has one hundred members, it should not go below one hundred, and once it reached two hundred, it should not go below two hundred (Mount 1). Another failure was The Anti Title Amendment. This amendment said that any citizen who accepted or received any title of nobility from a foreign power, or who accepted without the consent of Congress any gift from a foreign power, by would no longer be a citizen (Mount 1). Basically, this said that if someone received or accepted something from a foreign power, that person would no longer be a citizen. The Anti Title Amendment was submitted to the States in 1810 and was ratified by only twelve states, the last being in 1812 (Mount 1). Thirty eight states are required to ratify to add an amendment. The Slavery Amendment was another failure of the Bill of Rights. This amendment was not ratified because the House did not want any amendment to be made to the Constitution which would authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any state, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of ... • 5. Cultural Methods And Forms Of The Bantu Migration In Africa The Bantu migration is the dispersal of the Bantu people from the region of Cameroon and the Congo area. The word Bantu does not refer to the people of the African expansion, but rather the African languages belonging to the people in the Niger Congo. Cultural influences that occurred, due to the migration of the Bantu people, laid out the foundation for other Sub Saharan societies. Historians have used the collective information found by archeologists and other historians in order to draw conclusions about the Bantu Migration. Linguistics, agriculture, and different types of art have been the evidence needed to identify the culture and the specific patterns of movement, during this period. Bantu speaking farmers are known to have spread through the Congo forests by the first millennium. The rapid spread of the Bantu people became evident in the fifth century; the iron working and crop cultivation of pumpkins, melons, and beans had become wide spread in central, eastern, and southern Africa. Although crop cultivation is an efficient way to track movement patterns, this paper will focus on the linguistics, genetics, and various art forms used to track the dispersal. Oral communication used by the Bantu people was one of the only ways to relay information. Verbal communication and the study of linguistics, in the instance of the Bantu Migration can be obscured because over familial generations and time the language changes, forms its own dialect, and develops for ... They re known for their abilities to alter perception and invoke behavioral alterations in people who consume the drugs, such as psilocybin (magic mushrooms), DMT, and Lysergic acid diethylamide(LSD). In 1958 (Moore, Hatada, Dominos) it was found that when consumed by humans, N N Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), causes visuals that make up of colorful, luminous, rapid changing visual illusions and hallucinations. Ingestion of a psychedelic drugs such as DMT influences the cortex, optic lobes, and thalamus, as well as effecting sleep. A possible explanation for visual hallucination while under the influence of Dimethyltryptamine was presented by a research conducted in 1979. In mammals, such as cats, N N Dimethlytrptamine was studied with respect to the visual system. • 10. Personal Themes In A Stolen Life By Jaycee Dugard She was alone, she was scared, she had no idea that her normal life would be taken away for the next eighteen years... and hope is the sole reason that she survived it. For kidnap victim, Jaycee Dugard, the word hope brings back a flood of emotions and memories. In her chilling memoir, A Stolen Life , she describes a very personal experience in which she encountered at age eleven, where she soon learned just how important hope was. Dugard never saw it coming when a man named Phillip Garrido stole her from that bus stop on just another normal morning... or so she thought. Soon after, he took her away and held her hostage in his backyard for almost two decades. Interestingly enough, she has miraculously turned this cruel situation into a very inspiring story. Therefore, she proves to us that even if you re living out your worst nightmare, you still have something to live for. For this reason, Dugard puts together a descriptive setting, her absurd relationship with her abductor, and personal symbols to illustrate how just a little hope can be the essence of surviving any situation life throws at you. For starters, it could have been the easiest thing in the world for Jaycee to lose hope by becoming discouraged by the filthiness and disgust of the environment she was held captive in for all of those years. She paints a picture of just how unpleasant her setting was by describing how The desk had lots of junk on it...to the left of the door there is a toilet with a built in ... • 11. Why Is Andrew Carnegie A Hero Andrew Carnegie was a hero amongst a few people but it can be debatable towards others. Andrew Carnegie was born in November 1835, in the attic of a weaver s cottage in Dunfermline, Scotland. While he was growing up, his family was poor, so his family decided to move to the United States, he started working at the age of twelve. As he got older he got promoted into different positions and because of this he was able to build up his own business and bought out his competition. Could Andrew Carnegie be considered a hero? Shinn s point is to see the increase and decrease of production costs and selling prices. This evidence helps explain why Carnegie was not a hero because Shinn is only talking about the production price and the selling cost of steel rails. For example, in The Saturday Globe it illustrates how Carnegie had Double Role (The Saturday Globe, 1892). In making this comment, the Saturday Globe is trying to say that Carnegie was playing two roles because he could give away money and still made notices about wages being reduced. This demonstrates how he wasn t a hero because he would reduce the wages of his employees to give that away. Money was one of the many reasons why Carnegie wasn t a hero because of how he took away wages from his employees to give it away. Although money was important to him, he still felt that he needed to donate it to the public. The third area in which Carnegie wasn t a hero was social. Garland states, Everywhere where grimy men with sallow and lean faces (Garland, 1894). Garland is trying to prove the difference between two people s payments. This doesn t help answer the question of Carnegie being a hero because it s talking about people s pay. According to Carnegie, Why should men leave great fortunes to their children (Carnegie,1889). She feels that she learns best when applying areas of study to real life experience and to personal experiences. She also finds herself writing many things down, high lighting, and drawing out things when trying to remember something. This author took another survey on another website to see what the preferred learning style showed. How we react to certain social situations, how we interpret or read another person s actions, how we respond to other individuals, are all dependent on sociology. From this course, I hope to better be able to understand why people act and behave the way they do. I hope to learn more about significant social issues that are widespread throughout the world today and about social forces to help bring about change. On a deeper level, I want to understand why sociology is that window to being able to think on a different level, and the key to understanding those underlying human connections/behavior. For example, why is there a mental health stigma? Why do stereotypes exist? Where do social norms and social constructs stem from? Why does society breed the type of mentality where photoshop and runway models are the standards of beauty? All of the answers to these questions lie in sociological theories and concepts. I also hope that this course can help me to understand other social problems, such as racism, crime, poverty, violence, sexism, and how to contribute to their solutions. At the beginning of the book Adam questioned what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, this is something I ask myself on a daily basis. That led to him joining a program called Semester at Sea. He would end up backpacking through several developing countries for 100 days. Students who were part of the program were transported there on a cruise ship. This investigation relates to the nervous and brain systems in the human body. When your senses pick up clues from the outside world it takes a small amount of time for you to recognize the signal and respond. (Yuhas, 2018) Reaction time is the measure of speed from which your brain recognises a stimulus, to the reaction, possibly movement. The process of reacting is carried out by many neurons as well as numerous systems and circuits in the brain. (Yuhas, 2018). There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Previous studies produced results that show that touch is the fastest, then auditory and finally visual with the averagely slowest reaction time. This data suggests that visual stimuli cause the fastest reaction, followed by auditory, and finally touch. The average in time for visual stimuli was 0.170 seconds. Previous results have evidenced that visual stimulus is the slowest, with an average time of 0.25 seconds. This experiment contradicts these results. The second fastest reaction time was caused by an auditory stimulus. This produced an average reading of 0.176 seconds. This is similar to previous results. However, there is a small discrepancy of 0.006 seconds between the previous results and the results of this test. Finally, touch stimulus was the slowest in this experiment. This contradicts previous results. In other tests the touch stimulus was the fastest at 0.15 seconds, whereas in this experiment it was the slowest: 0.193 seconds. When the auditory and touch tests were carried out, there was most likely a small amount of time between the call or touch and the ruler being dropped. Also, test subjects were changed throughout the experiment. This would have caused a discrepancy in the results, because different subjects may have had different personal reaction times due to several factors. Also, the age could have had an effect. • 25. Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The... We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some utility in deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept. A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary): completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use. Essay about The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening Many different symbols were utilized in Kate Chopin s The Awakening to illustrate the underlying themes and internal conflict of the characters. The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace (Chopin 25). Edna s recollection of this event allows her to more clearly recognize her internal turmoil. One such child of the second generation was Washington Irving, who felt inspired by both his country s history and stories of other cultures told by fellow immigrants, to be the catalyst for a new wave of literature. Through the perfectly captured spirit of America in his work, Washington Irving was the first to show the rest of the world what his country had to offer to the literary world. Washington Irving was born in New York City in 1783, named after General George Washington who led the United States to winning the American Revolution. He was the youngest of eleven siblings to Scottish English parents, and was taught by them at home. Under his brother Peter, an editor for the newspaper The Morning Chronicle, Washington started writing for him at age 18. He published essays and letters under the name Jonathan Oldstyle, the first of various pseudonyms used throughout his literary career. In 1804, Washington left for France originally to inquire about his health, but was so charmed by the people and culture that he decided to stay and travel to other countries in Europe like the Netherlands, Wales, and Spain for the next two years. After returning to New York City, Irving began practicing law, working as a clerk under Josiah Ogden Hoffman. As a child, he seemed to be more of a daydreamer than a scholar, and was more interested in socializing and working with his friends. With his brother William and friend James Kirke Paulding, Washington started the Salmagundi Papers, also known as The Opinions of Launcelot Langstaff in 1809. These essays served as satirical periodicals to offset the other, gloomier news articles of the time. While short lived, it was met with success and positive reviews, people appreciating its Swift esque sense of humor and style. That same year, he was inspired to write History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, a historical novel being his first major work under Diedrich Knickerbocker. • 36. Analysis of four types of conflict in John Steinbeck s... In John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath, the journey of the Joad family is riddled with conflict. The family experiences all of the four major types of conflicts: man vs. himself, man vs. society, man vs. nature, and man vs. man. In the case of The Grapes of Wrath, man represents the Joad family as a single unit. They experience conflict within the family itself, with the society they are coming from as well as the one they are going to, and with nature and the elements. The man vs. man conflict is usually just a more specific example of one of the other areas of conflict. The most prevalent conflict in the novel is man vs. society. Tom s natural instinct is to become a leader, and lead the people to revolt against the way the society is working in the west. When the man Tom meets at the camp tells him that if he does that, he will be blacklisted, in which case he won t be able to get work anywhere, and his family could quite possibly starve. Well, you jus open your trap about us folks getting together, an you ll see. They take your pitcher an send it all over. Then you can t get work nowhere. An if you got kids (336). This represents a man vs. himself conflict because Tom has to resist his instincts to start a revolt, and just lay low. The man vs. man conflict is usually a representations of a different conflict. In The Grapes of Wrath, the people the Joad family has conflicts with are usually some sort of personifications of another area of conflict, for example, society. This is why one must understand the historical events taking place and the consequent changes of opinion and approaches to society. It is suggested that the novel Waverley revisits past pieces of Scottish literature, therefore maintaining an awareness of historical relevance. By doing this Scott is able to use the past as a setting for his writings and while doing so, he is able to reflect upon the time that Waverley was written and the proceeding eras. He was therefore able to explore history and develop an understanding of the ideology and social expectations of the time. This influential Novel was set in the Jacobite revolution in 1745, in which class clashes had begun to form between those who wished the Stewards and their society to remain and those who wanted change. This affected the message of the novel greatly. The early chapters of the novel show how, despite family allegiance Edward maintains the Tory identity and reflects steward loyalist. These political events within the novel reveal the ideological and historical importance s within the rebellion, which would shape the nation and therefore future literature. Hilary Radner has noted Nancy Meyers as being neo feminist because of her view of heterosexual men whom she often portrays as being highly disadvantaged up to the point of suffering a disability and her obvious interest in older women who are portrayed as very successful career women (2011). Her films which are targeting the female audience, as Radner observes, are combining two major disabilities as impediments to love: masculinity and advancing age. Meyer based her film Something s Gotta Give on her own experience as a singleton in her fifties, making Diane Keaton an even bigger star persona who won a Golden Globe, an NBR Award and also a Golden Satellite Award for her role in the film, as Erica. Keaton s character Erica Barry is thin and fit with a natural look and mid length hair. When she appears in her date dress which is a classic little black dress (LBD was highly popularized by Chanel) she catches the eye of both Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) and Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves). Radner claims that Erica functions as an alter ego of director Nancy Meyers whose stylistic choices somehow displace Keaton s established persona, as Keaton herself stated Clearly, Erica is more Nancy than me (Hilary Radner, 2011: 175). LEDs, unlike the incandescent light bulbs that lit our homes for almost a century, produce light via a chemical reaction. Incandescent lamps produce light by passing an electrical current through a wire (tungsten) filament until it heats to high heat and glows almost white. Colour Temperature Put simply, colour temperature is the degree of warmth (yellow redness) of the light emitted from the bulb. The colour of an incandescent bulb is usually warm white and most LED bulbs do a good job of reproducing light in this spectrum.
