Understanding: Race RACE: is social constructed category that divides people into groups based on visible physical characteristics such as skin color, eye shape, hair texture, etc. Although race is related to the physical body, the meaning we give these superficial differences between us are entirely socially constructed. There are NO actual genetic differences between the various races. Because race categories are socially constructed, they change over time. Which categories we measure, and how we measure them, shifts. 4 Understanding: Ethnicity Ethnicity: is a socially constructed category, a way of grouping people based on their shared culture, such as religion, language, and history. The difference between “race” and “ethnicity” can be confusing. For example, “Asian American” is treated as a race, but “Chinese American” and “Japanese American” are treated as ethnicities because they have distinct languages and traditions. In the United States, there is a great deal of pressure on ethnic minority groups to assimilate the norms, values, and characteristics of the majority ethnic group. Race and Ethnicity in America Different racial groups are just that– different. Even thought we often speak in terms of binaries (“minorities” verses “the majority”), it is important to realize that not all minority race and/or ethnic groups share the same characteristics, both between themselves and within themselves. White Americans: white is a race! Hispanic Americans African Americans Native Indigenous Americans Asian Americans Arab Americans Multiracial Racial and Ethnic Inequality A commonality among those which are considered minority groups is the experience of inequality. Inequalities are socially structured and thus can impact multiple aspects of an individual’s life– not just, for example, their ability to get a job. Racism: the belief that the physical and cultural characteristics associated with a group of people are inferior and thus unequal treatment of the group and its members is justified. CASE SUMMARY: PROCEDURAL POSTURE: Appellant homeowners sought review of the decision from the Hennepin County, District Court (Minnesota), which granted summary judgment in favor of respondents, savings association and payment plan, on the homeowners\' claim of tortious interference with contract. OVERVIEW: The homeowners entered into a conditional sales contract to purchase a mobile home. Subsequently the contract was assigned to the savings associationThe homeowners argued that thetrial court erred in determining, as a matter of law, that their claims of wrongful interference with contracts were invalid. The court determined that the trial court had correctly determined that a contract between the homeowners and a subsequent buyer could not arise absent performance of a condition precedent, which was the approval of the subsequent buyer\'s assumption of the loan. Even if this court were to determine that valid contracts existed between the homeowners and prospective buyers, the issue of justification would have to be addressed and the savings association and payment plan would have prevailed. Credit checks and equity interests were commercially reasonable assurances and could not be met by the prospective buyers. The savings association and payment plan were within their right to refuse the assignment. OUTCOME: The court affirmed the decision from the trial court. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion,codecast,elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.
