2. To help understand our chosen target audience for our TV drama we
asked specific members of the public to answer some simple questions that
could help us when creating our TV drama and what people look for in a
TV drama.
We asked 20 children between the ages of 6-12 both boys and girls
here are the results…
Introduction…
3. In our questionnaire we asked male and
female children some simple questions
this graph shows the ratio of male to
female participants…

4. From this question we discovered that children prefer to watch
programmes in the morning rather than later in the day this may
be because children are likely to wake up and enjoy school more
and it is likely that the shows will be quite short as the child
will be getting ready for school or doing daily activities. It is
also unlikely children will watch TV dramas at lunch as they
will be at school/ home-schooled. Afterschool was the second
most popular choice again the programme may be short as children
will have dinner, do their homework, etc. Watching TV dramas in
the evening was quite high too however children are likely to be
going to bed so again the programme would have to quite short.

5. Comedy was the most popular and it is likely that children want
to be entertained and be happy, this could range from a light-
hearted programme to something hysterical. I noticed that the
mystery/ fantasy category was the lowest which seemed odd as
children like to be entertained and pretend to be someone their
not and escape from their own lives and most TV dramas give a
false impression on life that children can look up too for
example M.I.High shows that teenagers can become spies
unfortunately that isn’t the case.

6. Children have short attention spans and have things to
do for example get ready and go to school, do
homework, etc and a 20 minute show was the most
popular channels like CBBC have TV dramas where
the majority of them are 20 minutes or less as they
understand children and supports my point of children
having short attention spans, etc.
The other option suggested longer shows which could
indicate children may want to see more of a
programme if they enjoy it.

7. The most important question of all determined that
children thought around 15 seconds and above should
be long enough for a title sequence, however 25
seconds was the most popular answer this amount of
time will ensure that we give hints and relate to
what our TV drama is about and have room for a
catchy theme song that will spread so other children
are interested in our TV drama.

8. From this question the most popular answer was the
story line as this is the reason most people watch
things as it highlights their interests and likes for
example if someone likes history it is likely their
going to watch something to do with history. Cast was
also quite popular as children may be expecting well
known stars they have seen in other children’s TV
dramas and music is not to important to children as long
as the content is good.

9. The majority of people we asked wanted a modern and up-
to –date show this means there must be a wide range of
technology used to create the show with good effects to
make the programme more realistic, this also shows us
that children may be into animated shows as this links to
technological development. Children also preferred a
historical look on the programme this may be because it is
linked to school and their interests or other popular TV
dramas have used this and been successful.
